Sincere 9gerian: The turbulence that followed the privatisation of PHCN successor companies appears to be abating as we'r beginning to notice some stability in power supply in most parts of Enugu. |
The handover of PHCN successor companies on the first of November was followed by periods of drastic worsening of power nationwide. The problem then was traced to the shocks that accompanied the process of handover and vandalism of critical gas pipelines by sabotuers who were suspected to be agents of APC. A.P.C no go kill you one day,,so u think we can achieve if we privatise phcn without cracking down on those importing generator, don't u think dey are responsible for d vandalism happening,do u knw how much dey pay to those crooks in phcn just to make sure electricity is unstable just to make dem sell more generators, and don't u also think those oil marketers could also be behind it,do u knw how much they make on selling fuel to jerrycans on daily basis, we still have alot to do after the privatization ,it shouldn't stop there... |
if doing a road work with the people of the state, if organizing a feedback program where people interact with d governor and his excos across the state constituencies, constructing public skuls dat no private skul could match, constructing roads across all nooks and cronies of d states, distribution of tablet of knowledge (opon imo),elementary school feeding, payment of 13th month salary to workers, just to mention a few, makes him a jihadist then I think we will rather like to have him for long than have a serious church goer who will not do anything meaningful for us as our governor |
una no fit beg dem to share u from their own |
but he if has donated 100million naira to d church n bought vehicles for them, then he would have said he is spending the state's allocation judiciously..... I swear no be only politicians go rot in hell. |
they promised us they will construct new refineries, create jobs and distribute buses to ease the pain of subsidy removal, but up till now, all u see in my state is just a toyota hilux van with sure-p written beside it n is been driven around by a pdp card carrying member who claims to be the co-ordinator in my state |
An apparently angry and frustrated ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has written what clearly competes as one of the most acerbic letters in modern history to President Goodluck Jonathan, accusing him of ineptitude and of taking actions calculated at destroying Nigeria. “Nigeria is bleeding and the hemorrhage must be stopped,” Mr. Obasanjo said in the 18-page letter dated December 2, 2013 and exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday. He said Mr. Jonathan has failed to deliver on his promises to the Nigerian people, stem corruption, promote national unity and strengthen national security. He said in the letter titled “Before it is too late” that rather than take steps to advance Nigeria’s interest and up the standards of living of Nigerians, Mr. Jonathan had betrayed God and the Nigerian people that brought him to power, and has been pursuing selfish personal and political interests based on advice he receives from “self-centred aides”. In the detailed letter, dripping of anger , frustration and what appears a genuine concern to rescue a nation on the brink, Mr. Obasanjo lamented that Mr. Jonathan had become terribly divisive and clannish, destroying his own party, polarizing the country along regional and religious lines and ridiculing Nigeria in the comity of nations. Without mincing words, Mr. Obasanjo blamed Mr. Jonathan for the crises tearing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, apart. He said apart from using party chairman Bamanga Tukur to cause multiple crises and divide the ranks of the party, the president’s failure to keep a promise he made not to seek a second term is also generating tension within the ruling party. “It would be unfair to continue to level full blames on the Chairman (Tukur) for all that goes wrong with the party,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “The chairman is playing the tune dictated by the paymaster (Jonathan). But the paymaster is acting for a definitive purpose for which deceit and deception seem to be the major ingredients. “Up till two months ago, Mr. President, you told me that you have not told anybody that you would contest in 2015. I quickly pointed out to you that the signs and the measures on the ground do not tally with your statement. You said the same to one other person who shared his observation with me. And only a fool would believe that statement you made to me judging by what is going on. I must say it is not ingenious. You may wish to pursue a more credible and more honorable path.” The former President said Mr. Jonathan told him before the 2011 election he would not seek a second term, and made the same promise to governors, party stakeholders and Nigerians. The president’s refusal to keep that promise cast him as a man without honour, Mr. Obasanjo said. Saying it would be “fatally morally flawed” for Mr. Jonathan to contest in 2015, Mr. Obasanjo added, “As a leader, two things you must cherish and hold dear among others are trust and honour both of which are important ingredients of character. I will want to see anyone in the Office of the Presidency of Nigeria as a man or woman who can be trusted, a person of honour in his words and character.” Mr. Obasanjo also accused Mr. Jonathan of anti- party conducts – supporting opposition parties’ candidates in governorship elections in Lagos, Ondo, Edo and Anambra states at the detriment of PDP’s own candidates –, and of pitting party members against one another. Saying the President had failed to address the underlying causes of the Boko Haram menace, Mr. Obasanjo urged Mr. Jonathan to adopt a carrot and stick approach in dealing with the insurgency explaining that “conventional military actions based on standard phases of military operations alone will not permanently and effectively deal with the issue of Boko Haram”. Mr. Obasanjo also tackled Mr. Jonathan for allegedly being clannish. “For you to allow yourself to be “possessed”, so to say, to the exclusion of most of the rest of Nigerians as an “Ijaw man” is a mistake that should never have been allowed to happen. Yes, you have to be born in one part of Nigeria to be Nigerian if not naturalized but the Nigerian President must be above ethnic factionalism. And those who prop you up as of, and for ‘Ijaw nation’ are not your friends genuinely, not friends of Nigeria nor friends of ‘Ijaw nation’ they tout about. “To allow or tacitly encourage people of ‘Ijaw nation’ to throw insults on other Nigerians from other parts of the country and threaten fire and brimstone to protect your interest as an Ijaw man is myopic and your not openly quieting them is even more unfortunate. Two Ijaw men, ex-militant Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, and a former federal commissioner for information, Edwin Clark, who carries himself around as the political godfather of the president, are known to talk down on people opposed to the president. Mr. Obasanjo also accused Mr. Jonathan of placing over 1000 Nigerians on political watch list and “training snipers and other armed personnel secretly and clandestinely acquiring weapons to match for political purposes like Abacha and training them where Abacha trained his killers”. He wondered why the Presidency was providing assistance for a murderer to evade justice. “Presidential assistance for a murderer to evade justice and presidential delegation to welcome him home can only be in bad taste generally but particularly to the family of his victim,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “Assisting criminals to evade justice cannot be part of the job of the presidency. Or, as it is viwed in some quarters, is he being recruited to do for you what he had done for Abacha in the past? Hopefully, he should have learned his lesson. Let us continue to watch.” Mr. Obasanjo did not mention the name of the murderer he accused the President of protecting but he seems to be referring to Hamza Al- Mustapha, a former security aide to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who is facing trial for allegedly masterminding the killing of Kudirat Abiola, the wife of Moshood Abiola, the winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election. Mr. Al-Mustapha was freed by the appeal court in July but the Lagos state government has since appealed the judgment at the Supreme Court. The former President also called on the National Assembly to rise up and take decisive action over the recent allegation in the country that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation failed to remit billions of dollars in proceeds of crude oil sales to the federation account. “This allegation will not fly away by non-action, cover-up, denial or bribing possible investigators,” Mr. Obasanjo told the President. “Please deal with this allegation transparently and let the truth be known. “The dramatis personae in this allegation and who they are working for will one day be public knowledge. Those who know are watching if the National Assembly will not be accomplice in the heinous crime and naked grand corruption. May God grant you the grace for at least one effective corrective action against high corruption which seems to stink all around you in your government.” Mr. Obasanjo said he wrote the letter in the national interest, saying nothing, at this stage of his life, would prevent him from standing up for whatever he considers to be in the best interest of Nigeria, Africa and the world. He said he was ready for whatever backlash his letter would provoke from the presidency. “Knowing what happens around you most of which you know of and condone or deny, this letter will proke cacophony from hired and unhired attackers but I will maintain my serenity because by this letter, I have done my duty to you as I have always done, to your government, to the party, PDP, and to our country, Nigeria…,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “I have passed the stage of being flattered, intimidated, threatened, frightened, induced or bought… Death is the end of all human beings and may it come when God wills it to come.” The full letter is a must read. We will provide a copy for download soon. |
Are those Toyota buses too made in akure? |
This is not about president Jonathan but rather Nigeria as a whole, I think we deserved more than even the united states, cos from what I read,I think Nigeria supported south africa more than any other country during the apartheid reign,so I think we should have been given an opportunity to say something... |
Fani kayode just told the pdp not to try to rig in the south-west and warned president not yo allow what happened during 1965,1983 and 1993 to happen again |
A.P.C mobilisation team has just started it campaign and mobilisation from the state of osun at the osogbo stadium, with the likes of audu ogbe, Rochas okorocha, El rufai, Fani kayode, Olusegun Osoba, Abba Buka Ibrahim and k1 with music and the crowd is really loving it... |
Tittos: This is one of the reasons I hate politicians. They are all hypocrites. This speaker condones corruption as much as Jonathan. If not why has the house of rep not started the process of impeaching the president,or are all these facts not reasonable ground for impeachment. Why is he telling us? Was he not elected to represent us and make sure that the president is brought to book. This is why we can't move forward in this country, the politicians know the right thing to do but don't do them, they simply prefer to talk about it. Secondly what of Farouk Lawan. Was it not exactly same thing Gej did with aviation and fuel subsidy that he did with the case of Farouk Lawan. Truth is,they both condone Corruption. Gej may be worse though..And if they should impeach him,am very sure u will be the first person to say it is a northern agenda to get back to power.. |

I have always wondered why so many people hate buhari and this prompted me to reading alot about him and his military regime, and I think I should share some of what I found out...........hate him or like him, his short term regime is to me really commendable and after asking about him from people who were present then, I think he is only suffering for being too just and clean...enjoy. T he demise of the inglorious second Republic under the leadership of Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Shagari, the First Executive President of Nigeria was brought about the total breakdown of law and order, and the apparent insecurity in the country arising from the bitter political wrangling generated by the 1983 general elections. The nation was moving dangerously in murky political waters and could have hit the reefs but the timely intervention came to her rescue. The abysmal downward plunge of the already battered economy, the unmitigated corruption, greed, avarice, lack of public probity and accountability, hunger and abject poverty, and the aimless drifting of the ship of state which characterised the last days of the Second Republic prompted the Armed Forces to strike in the midnight of December 31, 1983 and installed Major General Muhammadu Buhari (then GOC 3rd Division, Jos) as the new Head of State. The Buhari administration identified indiscipline as the bane of the nation's ills and therefore decided to fight it in all its ramifications. Hence the pre- occupation of the regime was the launching of the different phases of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) which has become a household word in may Nigerian homes. There were five phases of WAI, namely :- a. Queuing (March 20, 1984) b. Work Ethics (May 1, 1984) c. Nationalism and Patriotism (August 21, 1984) d. Anti-Corruption and Economic Sabotage (May 14, 1985) e. Environmental Sanitation (July 29, 1985). Other highlights of the regime include :- 1. The suspension of the 1979 Constitution in January 1984. 2. The dissolution of political parties and ban on political activities in January 1984. 3. The freezing of accounts of political parties and corrupt ex-political office holders in the Second Republic in 1984. 4. The trimming down of the country's Civil service labour force in 1984. 5. The change of colour of the nation's currency notes (except the fifty kobo note) in April 1984 to stop currency trafficking. The exercise rendered almost half of the estimated N6 billion in circulation worthless at the expiration of the change. 6. The deportation of illegal aliens on the 14th of April, 1984 and 9th of August, 1985 respectively. 7. The clamp down on economic saboteurs with the legal backing of the Miscellaneous Offences Decree No. 20 of 1984. 8. The launching of the Expanded Immunization Programme (EPI) in May, 1984. 9. The initiation of counter trade in Petroleum products in May, 1984. 10. The wrestling of a major concession from OPEC in 1984 to increase Nigeria's oil production quota from 1.3 million barrels to 1.45 million barrels per day. 11. The adoption of stricter austerity measures in 1984 and 1985 to further revamp the economy which include: i. The closure of the Nigerian borders in January 1984 to stem smuggling. ii. The setting up of taskforce to check bunkering as a result of expert's estimation of a loss of one million Naira a day under the civilian government. iii. The slashing of the basic travelling allowance (BTA) from N 500 to N 100 per annum in 1984. iv. The introduction of N 100 airport special levy for travellers going outside Africa. v. The reduction of the home remittance for foreigners to 25 per cent in 1984. vi. The abolition of the Approved Users Scheme, the General Concessionary Rates of Duty and the Compulsory Advance Deposit Scheme. vii. The introduction of a new Customs Tariff, which reduced the range of import duties from between zero and 500 per cent to between 5 per cent and 200 per cent. viii. The granting of import duty exemption to only twenty items including agricultural implements, air craft, fuels, lubricants, educational films, technical assistance materials etc. ix The introduction of the Advanced Import Duty Payment Scheme. x. The imposition of a levy on dormant companies. xi. The promulgation of the Finance Decrees to amend the Income Tax Act of 1969. xii. The halving of civil servants' leave entitlement in January, 1985. 12. The trial and conviction of ex-politicians who illegally enriched themselves or their political parties. 13 In 1984, Nigeria's recognition of the Sahara Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) on November 11, 1984. 14. The encouragement of substitution of imported raw materials with local raw materials to boost the growth of industries. 15. The encouragement of self sufficiency in agricultural food production. 16. The promulgation of a series of decrees aimed at revamping the economy and inculcating discipline. The most controversial being the Public Officers (Protection Against False Accusation) Decree No 4 and the Miscellaneous Offences Decree No. 20 of 1984. 17. The rescheduling of the nations's short term trade debts valued at over =N=5 billion and the subsequent issuance of promissory notes to the uninsured creditors. 18. The procurement of new Air Buses by Nigeria Airways in 1985 to boost air transportation. 19. The victory of Nigeria's Under-17 Team (the Golden Eagles) at the Kodak World Cup Soccer Competition in China in August, 1985. please if u disagree with dis pls argue wit ur own fact and don't abuse me oooooooo |

ABOUT 22 Senators elected on the platform of PDP may be on their way to the All Progressive Party (APC). This is despite Wednesday’s trouble shooting visit to the Senate by the embattled National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to stop the cross over, coming soon after the defection of five PD governors to the APC. A Senator familiar with the development told The Nation yesterday that “it’s just a matter of time for us to consummate our plan to move to the APC.” A similar move in the House of Representatives is already generating tension in the chamber following a move by some members to sack principal officers like Depputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, Majority Leader Mulikat Akande- Adeola, Deputy Leader Leo Ogor, Chief Whip Isiaka Bawa and Deputy Chief Whip Ahmed Mohammed. However, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal is said to have prevailed on the members to soft pedal. The Senate source said Tukur’s visit might have been prompted by the planned defection to “massage our back and give us false hope.” The source said that “after the successful defection of the five governors to the APC, the National Assembly is the next theatre of defection.” The source added that the three Senators from one of the Northwest states were so “pissed off with Tukur” that they walked out on him during the Senate visit. One of the angry Senators was said to have thundered, as he walked out: “Tukur did not know how I contested and won my election; he will not also know how I will contest and win the next election.” The source did not name the about-to-defect Senators because as he put it, “it is not in my place to announce the names of anybody who wants to leave PDP.” “As we speak, those of us who have made up our minds to seek a new platform for our political future are not fewer than 22 in this Senate,” he said. But he hinted that two to three senators will move from each of Jigawa, Sokoto States, Adamawa, Kano, Gombe, Kwara, Rivers and Borno States where two to three senators and one each from Nasarawa, Taraba, Kebbi and Niger States. “We know the five governors who left PDP, we know Senators and House of Representatives members who are their (governor’s) loyalists. Very soon, the era of speculation will be over when everybody will answer his name,” he said. Asked why Tukur left out the House of Representatives during his visit, the source said “it may be due to the perception of the leadership of the House as rebels, rightly or wrongly. It may also be that the leadership of the party considers Senators more strategic in its scheme of things.” PDP currently has 72 members, APC has 33, LP 3 and APGA 1 in the Senate. Meanwhile, Speaker Tambuwal has stalled move by some Reps to oust certain principal officers of the House on the heel of the planned defection of PDP members to APC. The number of APC members in the House has is believed to have risen beyond the stipulated 181 in the House rules with the defection of the five PDP governors to APC. The strength of the APC in the House was tested during this week’s plenary proceedings as they blocked a motion perceived to be against their interest. A member of the APC in House who spoke under anonymity, said: “APC has exceeded 181 as at today. Before the PDP governors joined us, the number was 137. As you know, the rules stipulate 181. Once that is reached, the configuration changes.” This position was confirmed by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila of the APC, who posited that the strength of members of the party in the House is over 181. “The new arithmetic of the lawmakers in the House is 137, existing APC members plus 57 new PDP members that recently joined, making a total of 194 members,” another APC lawmaker said. APC members were initially moving for the removal of the Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, the majority Leader Mulikat Akande- Adeola, the Deputy Leader, Leo Ogor, Chief Whip, Isiaka Mohammed Bawa and the Deputy Chief Whip, Ahmed Mukhtar Mohammed. But ahead of the APC’s plan to unveil the strength of its members in the House, Speaker Tambuwal moved to douse tension over the change in the power structure of the House. Gbajabiamila, who was in America when The Nation called him, said the unveiling is coming “soon.” A member of the House and Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) Hon. Dakuku Peterside was of the opinion that the change in power structure would bring a better Nigeria, “There has been a lot of alignment and realignment. There’s a whole new political current going on in the two chambers of the National Assembly. One thing that is certain is that the power configuration must change. “Now, the change in power configuration will come with consequences and implications. It might affect the leadership of the parties in the National Assembly, and again it will also affect the way the NASS relates with the Executive arm of government. “It might be negative or positive, but ultimately, it will be for the good of the Nigerian people. For the first time, there will be effective checks and balances. It will no longer be family affairs. The days of family affairs are gone and gone for good. The politics of Nigeria will never be the same again.” The APC , sequel to a meeting held at the Kano State Government Lodge in Kano early this week with the leaders of the APC and governors elected on the party’s platform and governors who defected from the PDP, had mapped out an agenda for the change of the leadership in the House of Representatives. But Tambuwual, after the meeting in which he was present, was said to have appealed to the opposition over the matter. The Nation learnt that one of the reasons for the appeal was that there would be division in the House should such sweeping changes in the leadership cadre of the House be effected. thenationonlineng.net |
A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, yesterday drew the anger of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) when he appealed to them to calloff the strike action and trust the Federal Government on meeting their demands. The visibly angry ASUU members interrupted Rev. Obinyan and refused to say amen to some prayers offered by him, and shouted on him to leave the podium. Rev. Obinyan was booed while giving his homily at the commendation service held for former President of ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi at the University of Benin. He advised ASUU not to give the Federal Government the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating them, stating that he discovered that many ASUU members were retreating, as well as collapsing their structures. Rev. Obinyan urged ASSU to trust the Federal Government to keep to its promise by calling-off the strike. According to him, “My appeal is to request you to make surrender the tool of power. Do not give the FG the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating you. We rely on that voice. We believe in that voice. I humbly request you to surrender first in this fight. You have made your point eloquently and clear enough. I know the Federal Government cannot be trusted because of their antecedent, but I request you to please trust them now” “ASUU will never lose by it. They will gain by it. Be assured of our prayers. We are at the receiving end. Many of your foot soldiers are collapsing. Some are retreating”, the priest said. But when the shouting by ASUU members was becoming deafening, Rev. Obinyan said, “Christ will not tell you to fight on. He will tell you to forgive and forget. My appeal is because of the sufferers.” Speaking with the media, President of ASUU, Nasir Isa- Fagge, said the Reverend Father spoke for himself, and that ASSUU members were steadfast in their demand. He said they would not call-off the strike until the Federal Government meet the four-point demand in their letter. |

We do not pretend to have all the answers, but we love the people and seek their best welfare. That alone distinguishes us from the present lot in power. We know the kind of country we want to live in. We have given the present group too much time already. Now that we know their emptiness, we must work to be the part of change we want to see. Change will not come unless we work for it. We must build other bridges across political divides and re-align forces to gather a critical mass strong enough to push for change. Nigeria today is an incomplete work, sometimes exhibiting more retreat than progress, more problems than solutions. Some people say we are doomed for failure. To them, I say their prophecy is the one sure thing doomed to fail. We have stumbled for long but very soon this nation shall stand as it should. Let me therefore end with the memorable words of Edward Burke: “In order for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good men to do nothing. That is the reality of Nigeria today. Let’s all get up and do something for our country.” - A brief excerpt of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s speech at the Launch of The Authorized Biography of His Royal Highness, Dr. Haliru Dantoro. |
