Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja has granted permission to the former Bayelsa State governor Timipriye Sylva to travel to South Africa for medical attention. He gave the permission yesterday while ruling on an application by the ex-governor for the release of his international passport to enable him travel. The judge had refused two similar applications filed by Sylva on the grounds that they were not supported by sufficient facts. Sylva is being tried on a six-count charge bordering on alleged financial impropriety. He is, among others, accused of conniving with state officials to defraud Bayelsa State of N2 billion while in office. Justice Bello held yesterday that since hearing in a new charge pending against Sylva has been set for January 23, he has an opportunity to travel for his medical treatment and return before the date. “I have given the applicant-accused a benefit of doubt that he needs a medical treatment in South Africa.” The judge gave the ex-governor 28 days, starting from December 7, to make the trip and return on or before January 5. |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been given the nod to inspect the electoral materials used for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State. The Elections Petition Tribunal, headed by Justice G K Kaigama, yesterday gave the order consequent upon a December 2 application filed by counsel to the APC candidate, Dr. Chris Ngige. The materials to be inspected at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Awka, the state capital, as directed by the Tribunal include materials used for the November 16, 17 and 30 elections including the voter register, result sheets, Form EC 17, oath of neutrality by INEC staff, used and unused ballot papers, staff payment vouchers for settlement of allowances of ad hoc staff, among others. The Tribunal directed that the materials be made available urgently to enable the petitioner move expeditiously. Dr. Ngige is challenging the result of the election which was awarded to the candidate of the All progressives Grand Alliance Dr. Willie Obiano. Also yesterday, the APC alleged that the state INEC under the leadership of Prof Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, has been doing everything possible to “tidy up” the loose ends in the electoral documents used in the election. It said Prof Onukogu has been distributing appointment letters to those recruited on the eve of the election. These emergency ad hoc workers could who not swear to the Oath of Neutrality required of them before the election. This, it was gathered they are now doing with today’s deadline. Under the Electoral Act, election officers ought to complete and swear to the Oath before a Commissioner For Oath in any of the Registries of High Courts or Magistrates Courts. |

However, ASUU has restated its rejection of the ultimatum, issuing yesterday a 14- point guideline to its members on why they must sustain the strike, adding that government’s claim that external forces were behind the union only betrays government’s desperation to distract the union’s genuine cause. This was made known by the union in Strike Bulletin No. 14, signed by ASUU National President Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge. The union came up with 14 guidelines signaling that it is prepared for a long drawn battle with the Federal Government. The guidelines read in part: • Do not sign any resumption of duty. Government is out to humiliate us. Hold your head high. This too shall pass!!! • If you receive any query on account of the ongoing strike, failure to sign resumption of duty register, etc, bring such to the attention of the branch chairperson immediately for guidance. • It is a general knowledge that members of ASUU are on a national strike. It is against the Labour Act and the ILO convention to sack anybody on account of participation in a strike, no matter how remotely related. • Remain resolute and refrain from violating the ongoing strike. Our Union is capable of protecting its members. • Meanwhile, be security conscious. Do not visit security agencies alone. In case of difficulties, always consult your Chairperson. • With our collective resolve, we can again brush off this unwarranted and provocative onslaught. Stand to be counted on the positive side of history. Do not betray your union. The leadership of ASUU also justified its struggle and insisted that it is in the public interest. It said: “Our collective national struggle to save the future of public system has entered yet another critical phase. The National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) commends all members for their steadfastness and commitment to this patriotic cause. More so, lecturers of the states and Federal universities in the Southwest said they remained resolute, describing Federal government’s threat to sack them as ‘primitive and derogatory’. The local ASUU chair, Dr Adesola Nassir, addressing reporters said the Ibadan Zone of ASUU comprising University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, would sustain the strike. They added that, a government that could hurry to inject over two trillion naira into ailing banks that are privately owned should not find it difficult to infuse N200bn into public universities across the country. talkofnaija.com |

The Senate has reached an advanced stage to pass a bill that seeks seven years jail term for social media critics found guilty of inciting the public against the government. The proposed legislation which has scaled second reading in the upper legislative chamber is also proposing a stiffer punishment for internet fraudsters and scammers in Nigeria as those convicted will face a seven years imprisonment. The joint Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and legal matters, Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes led by Senator Umaru Dahiru (PDP, Sokoto), yesterday organised a one day public hearing on the bill for an act to provide for the prohibition and punishment for electronic fraud and crime in all electronic transactions in Nigeria. Section 13 subsection 3 of the bill proposes that: “Anyone who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message shall be guilty of an offense and upon conviction shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or N5 million (fine).” Declaring open the public hearing Senate President David Mark who was represented by the deputy minority whip, Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina), said electronic fraudsters pose great danger to the country which must be tackled to attract foreign investment. The committee chairman Senator Umaru Dahiru (PDP, Sokoto) said electronic fraud was posing serious threat to world economies and Nigeria being a developing economy should enact appropriate laws to deal with the challenges. newswirengr.com/2013/12/04/brace-up-people-nigerias-senate-seeks-7-year-jail-term-for-twitter-activist-facebook-critics/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Osun State chapter has said that the new education policy introduced by Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola would stir terrorism in the state CAN in a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiye said, “ We wish at this juncture to state categorically that the Osun State Christian Association of Nigeria is not fighting the Government of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, neither has the association pitched tent with any political party, especially since Christians in the state form a very large part of the electorate that voted the present governor into office. We will however not shy away from our responsibility to defend the Christian faith. “The continued silence of the Osun State Government on the problem caused by this new policy on education is like sitting on a keg of gun powder. For instance, there have been lot of disturbances in public missionaries’ schools in the state, particularly on the use of hijab. “The climax of this was the attack on some innocent teachers and pupils of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, by some Muslim youth on Monday, 25th November, 2013. The Ejigbo incident is an infraction of the rule of law, especially given the fact that the hijab issue is presently before an Osogbo High Court. “The Ejigbo debacle has shown that the mode of d’emploi adopted in the execution of the reclassification of schools is capable of breeding and unleash pure terrorism and insurgency in the mould of Boko Haram on the otherwise peace-loving Osun State for which posterity will hold Aregbesola administration liable.” The association also condemned the recent attack on the Principal of its Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Mr. Layi Oguntola, by some Muslim youths. The principal was attacked in his office by the Muslim youth last week for allegedly sending a hijab-wearing pupil, one Romoke, away from the school. Oguntola has since denied the charge, saying that he merely flogged the pupil for being unruly. The Association also asked the state government to stop the use of hijab in Christian’s mission public schools and use beret as part of new uniform for female students. |

The Progressive governors under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) have accused President Goodluck Jonathan of focusing more attention on his second term ambition in 2015 than frontally tackling the increasing security threat to lives and property in the country. The governors, who belong to the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the accusation in reaction to Monday’s pre-dawn attack on the Nigerian Air Force base in Maiduguri, Borno State, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. The governors attributed the attack to what they called “lack of security agenda’’ by Mr. President, whom they claimed was more obsessed with winning the next presidential poll than tackling rising insurgency in the land. Making their views known in a statement signed by the Director-General in charge of the PGF secretariat in Abuja, Mr. Salihu Lukman, the governors noted with concern that the security situation in several parts of the country had continued to deteriorate despite the extension of the State of Emergency in some states and the trillions of naira supposedly spent on security. The governors said, “The most recent attack was particularly telling as it shows that President Goodluck Jonathan has no security agenda and is only focused on retaining power beyond 2015. The result of this criminal negligence is the unabated slaughter of lives. Clearly the security structures set up in the region have been overwhelmed. “The PGF calls on the President to reassess his security strategy and focus more on the critical issues of the day. Obviously, the strategies and tactics currently adopted by the President and security agencies drafted to the region have been ineffectual, just as they leave much to be desired. “While we commiserate with the Government and people of Borno State, we call on the Federal Government to immediately overhaul the tactics and rules of engagement of the security agencies deployed in Borno and other states. “The President, who also doubles as the Commander-in-Chief needs to get a firmer grip as well as ensure coherence in the management of the various tiers of security interventions in the affected states. His obsession with 2015 is a dangerous diversion at a time when real courage and statesmanship are needed. “We, on our own part, shall continue to offer support to our colleague, Governor Kashim Shettima and to provide necessary humanitarian assistance in these extremely difficult times. Information Nigeria recalls that Monday’s attack in Maiduguri lasted for close to five hours with the insurgents inflicting serious casualties on the people and burning down some military aircraft and buildings in the process although the security agencies repelled their advancement in an airstrike which left dozens of the gunmen dead. |

Right before his meeting with President Jonathan at Aso Villa yesterday, Governor Lamido of Jigawa had some strong words for the Commander in Chief. The governor spoke to journalists from Leadership Newspapers before the meeting. ” To us we are on a rescue mission, because what we are seeing today is a mad man inside petrol filling station with lighter in his hand, the threat he poses is very lethal and would not spare anyone,” he said. He said the arrest of his sons was politically motivated. “This arrest of my children on alleged corruption or stealing or whatever they call it, is nothing short of political miscalculation and an attempt to jolt me to change my political philosophy and succumb to the selfish interest of an ordinary human being as against the wish of my God and betterment of Nigeria. “Let me inform my detractors, in the last 30 years of my political struggle, I was harassed, arrested persecuted by those who saw my struggle as a threat to their interest, but I endured and refused to cow down. So at my age now with all my past experience it is a big mistake for anybody to think of using any form of threat against my family, or my life or anything else to taunt me. “I am not proud or conceited, but I can unequivocally say, in terms of good governance, justice, fairness, and judicious use of public funds; what we are doing in Jigawa state is exceptional in contemporary Nigeria. Many people including President Jonathan, past and present political and traditional leaders had testified to that. “But today in what appeared to be a political knife, some body called Jonathan from Bayelsa state with another person called Lamorde and some police officers tried to tell the world that they love Jigawa people and also they are concerned and keen in protecting state treasury better than me. This is very ridiculous.” The governor took it a step further by taking a swipe at Bayelsans, insinuating that the culture in the Niger Delta state permits stealing and corruption. According to him, “It is true every people have their own culture and traditions and wherever they found themselves, they must exhibit it. It is known to the whole world how a United Kingdom court arrested and tried former Bayelsa Governor Mr Diepreye Alamiesiegha on stealing of his state money. After the court found him guilty, the people of the state came out in defence of their child by protesting against the court action, they said the money he stole was Bayelsa state money, therefore they have forgiven him, and also warned against any attempt to arrest him by any national or international institution, this accentuated how some people behave. “So imagine somebody with this background, now has guts to come down to Jigawa state where we have the belie and culture in which every form of stealing is absolutely repugnant and punishable, claiming he came to help us in protecting and securing our money from thieves, you know from onset the man lacks moral value for such job. “Besides, of all the 36 state governors in the country and the federal government, it is only Sule Lamido that EFCC found corrupt, who connived with his children and looted his state money,” he said. In a further attempt to exonerate himself and his sons from wrongdoing, the governor said that even President Jonathan had testified in the past that there is judicious use of public funds in Jigawa state. “During Jonathan’s visit to my state in which he commissioned various projects in the state, he said the Birnin Kudu local government secretariat which we built at the cost of N400million, if it were in his state such project would not cost less than N2 billion, also the new Dutse NYSC permanent orientation camp built at the cost of N800million would cost over N2billion. However when he commissioned the new state secretariat he called all Nigerians to come to Jigawa and learn the judicious use of peoples’ money;” he said. It should also be pointed out that the governor himself paid similar glowing tributes to the president at those times as well, but now criticises him, a testament to how transient political relationships can be. Gov. Lamido also talked about the politics of 2015. He said: “On the issue of contesting for any seat I never ever said somebody should not contest, what I insisted is that, there is legal and moral way to get any seat, and anybody who wants to contest election must follow due process, must be transparent way with full obedience to party and Nigeria constitution. “It is totally wrong and reprehensible for anybody to think of using police, judiciary or other illegal way to get power, we fought against such idea in the past and we would vehemently continue to oppose it. “So, if fighting against injustice, breach of trust and flagrant abuse to the party and Nigerian constitution, and also preaching to adhere to the rule of law is corruption, I would continue to live on this.” He claimed that he had been expecting this kind of reaction from Aso Rock ever since they “started this struggle against President Jonathan’s move to perpetuate himself in power through illegal ways.” According to the governor, he told his fellow governors in the movement that, “this man at the corridor of power who is so blind on his selfish interest would use any avenue to fight back, including threat to our lives, power, political interest, wealth and even our family would not be spared in his move to crush us. “But to us the struggle is not about party or personality, it is a struggle to save the peace and unity of Nigeria, by preaching and insisting to entrench justice, fairness, fair -play and rule of law in our democracy and leadership system. This is essential for the survival of this country as a single entity.” |
