CrimePolice Kills Two Robbery Suspects In Delta, Recovers Weapons by oluwaSmith1(op): 4:55pm On Aug 13, 2015
The Police authorities in Delta State have shot dead two armed robbery suspects after their gang attacked some victims along Afisere road junction in Ughelli town, near Warri last Saturday.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu in a statement on Thursday, said the suspects died from gunshot wounds following a shoot-out between the police and the criminal gang during a robbery operation.

She said: ” On August 8, at about 10.30pm, the DPO, ‘A’ Division Ughelli received information that armed robbers were operating along Afisere road junction in Ughelli.

“Consequently, a combined team of Surveillance patrol team and Ughelli vigilante men were despatched to the scene, but the hoodlums on sighting the policemen opened fire on them.

Kalu said that in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two members of the gang were shot and arrested at the scene while others managed to escape.

She said that the injured armed robbers, however, gave up the ghost while been rushed to the hospital, adding that the police recovered one locally made pistol and six live cartridges from the gang.

Politics‘PDP Defectors Are Failed Politicians’ by oluwaSmith1(op): 4:29pm On Aug 13, 2015
Bayelsa State Government on Thursday described persons dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressive Congress (APC) ahead of the December 5 governorship election in the state as tested and failed politicians.

The Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mrs. Ebizi Brown, who expressed government’s position, said the ongoing defections of politicians would not affect the fortunes of the PDP in the election.

She said: “On the defection of members from the PDP, I want to say that their defections won’t make any impact. The PDP is waxing stronger by the day despite their exit.

“Many of those who have become media tigers, were those who have been tested and failed. We are not perturbed by their antics as they are not forces to reckon with. When they were given opportunities to serve, they failed. Bayelsans at the grassroots know them. They also know that PDP is their party and it cares for them.”

She called on indigenes of the state to support the second term aspiration of Governor Seriake Dickson to enable him to complete the ongoing projects in the state.

Brown, who was a former Director-General of the Bayelsa State Tourism Development Board, insisted that the projects which were over 80 per cent completion would be abandoned if Dickson fails to win the election.

She added that Dickson completely rebranded the state with his giant strides in roads construction, infrastructural development, construction of numerous buildings, construction of schools and capacity building, among others.

The consideration of the report of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Review of Finance of the Senate which was brought to the Chambers for discussion by its Chairman, Senator James Manager, {PDP-Delta}, may have been deadlocked after three hours behind close doors, DAILY POST learnt

Though it was not yet clear what transpired behind closed doors as at the time of this report, our correspondent learnt that the attempt to reduce their allowances as a result of paucity of funds rocking the nation did not receive the blessing of some Senators.

DAILY POST recalls that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had set up the ad-hoc Committee headed to look into the allowances of Senators with the possibility of reducing their entitlements.

PoliticsJonathan Never Called Peace Committee To Beg Buhari On His Behalf– Bishop Kukah by oluwaSmith1(op): 7:04am On Aug 12, 2015
Frontline cleric, Bishop Matthew Kukah has denied that former President Goodluck Jonathan contacted the National Peace Committee for the 2015 general election to beg President Buhari on his behalf.

‎The media was recently awash with the news that the meeting, held ‎Thursday night between Buhari and Jonathan was initiated because the former president sought for understanding on alleged corrupt practices and mismanagement of funds under his administration.

The report claimed that he was hearing about some of the graft allegations for the first time.
Fielding questions from State House correspondents after a meeting with President Buhari, Kukah said: “‎Anybody is free to come to our committee, but former President Jonathan never by telephone or another means talked to the committee. We went to see him, but that is after we had already seen members of the political parties, members of the civil society. We planned to see the Speaker because we couldn’t see him yesterday (Monday).

“This is a very planned series of interventions, essentially just to hear out everybody and I think the good news is that Nigerians are committed to a new nation, they are committed to ensuring that the gains and blessings God has given us come to fruition”.

On why the intervention has become necessary, the Cleric said: “‎This is not an intervention, it is a hearing out process. We just had an election; it was like a wedding. But now is the reality of government – now the marriage and people need to be encouraged. We need to reaffirm that this is our country and the only thing we can collectively be opposed to is injustice, inequity, corruption and in that regard we all had one single conversation.

“‎The President has also reaffirmed the need for this committee to continue, and the international community has very much welcomed the contributions of the committee. Essentially we are not policing, but when the need arises, we help to build confidence in the process,” he said.

PoliticsOgun Government Orders Shops, Markets Closed Over Sanitation by oluwaSmith1(op): 3:25pm On Aug 10, 2015
Shops and market stalls in Ifo, Obada-Oko and Owode-Ijako were all ordered to be shut on Monday by the Ogun State Government for operating in dirty environments.

The order was handed down by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, after monitoring the level of compliance with environmental sanitation regulations by shop owners and market women in parts of the state.

The Deputy Governor, who visited Ewekoro, Ifo and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Areas, insisted that government would ensure strict compliance to environmental sanitation laws in homes and business places.

Onanuga appealed to traders in the affected markets to ensure regular cleaning of their environment, to avoid clampdown in the future.

She also called on the people of the state to stop disposing their wastes in drains and road medians, adding that a clean environment would help to enhance the productivity of the people.

She also reiterated the state’s commitment to environmental sanitation and its resolve to punish non-compliance, stressing that government would continue to enlighten the general public on the importance of a clean environment to healthy living and socio-economic development.
