The leadership of the ASUU Academic Staff Union has written to its members to be patient, adding that renegotiation with the government has reached an advanced stage. This was revealed in an interesting news release by the Student Mirror.

Last week Monday, the national leader of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, made the presentation to Prof. Nimi Briggs committee.

The committee was set up in order to renegotiate the agreement signed by both the Union and FG concerning the 2009 memorandum.

The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke , said that they have done their own part In this situation. He also said, “the Union had made their presentation to the committee set up and there’s no more things to add”.

The National Strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is unnecessary . This statement was said by Prof. Is-haq Oloyede. Prof. Is-haq Oloyede is the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

I attended the meeting today.

It was held in all colleges of education in Nigeria by 10AM.

Of all that was said, below is the summary:

The strike is going to last for 4 weeks in the first instance.

Colleges of education have been neglected by the government.

Tax of staff salaries is on the gross salary and not on the basic salary, that is why staff salaries are below what they supposed to get.

There is poor funding of colleges of education with notable decay of infrastructure and poor students incentives.

Heads of departments and other office holders are not paid anything for their jobs. Heads of departments, exams officers and others use their monies to run their day to day job even as there's nothing like monetary entitlements to their offices.


They said the decision to embark on the strike is because they don't want to be left out of any good results that ASUU and ASUP would get from their own strikes because the new labour rules of engagement is that you can't enjoy anything others enjoy if you don't stand with them during the agitation.


ASUU and ASUP want better package for staff, better funding for higher institutions, use of UTAS instead of IPPIS which will ensure all monies and monetary entitlements of staff are captured as against IPPIS which only captures salaries.


COEASU are also demanding for all these things.

If COEASU does not join them in this agitation now, by the time the government harkens to ASUU and ASUP, COEASU would be left out, according to the new labour rules.

Everything is possible now

The COEASU national strike has begun, and students are picketing across the country. The COEASU is demanding better pay and working conditions for adjunct professors, and they want the government to invest more in higher education. The strike has been well-organized, and professors are showing solidarity with their students.

The Prof. Nimi Briggs-led committee set up the Federal Government to renegotiate the 2009 Agreement signed by the government with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and put an end to the ongoing industrial action by the union has failed to meet the three-month time frame given it by the FG to conclude its assignment. I encounter similar issue as well, Comrade it's going to be okay.
It's was covid year, after I stayed at home for few months, I put a message across to them telling them(desired company for my IT). I will like to start my internship, so I did started during that covid year and upon resumption I went there for the main internship unfortunately my school reduced IT period to 4month instead of 6month that year, lucky for me I already had started long time ago, got paid during the period.

Still ought to have graduated last year as well , covid and these ongoing strike is just extending it. Nevertheless I always utilize this period oh,
I still hope and pray for goodnews about the strike soon
