Most police investigations are based on a degree of speculation. Police can arrest you if it has a reasonable cause to believe that you're connected to an alleged crime. If the investigation establishes that the arrestee is not connected to the crime, then the arrestee is released.

The key is for the Police not to abuse the 'reasonable cause' basis for initiating or embrking on an arrest.
