Politics › Unemployment Worse Under Jonathan: National Planing Commission. by omenka(op): 7:38pm On Oct 10, 2013
The rate of unemployment among Nigerians
worsened after President Goodluck Jonathan
assumed office, a latest report by the federal
government has indicated.

The report, the 2011 Performance Monitoring Report on Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies, was announced by the National Planning Commission on Thursday in Abuja.

The report indicated that the unemployment rate in
Nigeria in 2010 was 21.1 per cent, a figure that
increased to 23.9 per cent in 2011.
“In 2011, Nigeria’s unemployment rose to 23.9 per
cent compared with 21.1 per cent in 2010,” the News Agency of Nigeria quotes the report as stating. The report referenced its facts from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Mr. Jonathan assumed office as Nigeria’s substantive president on May 6, 2010, a day after the death of his predecessor and former boss, Umaru Yar’Adua. He continued as president in 2011 after he won the presidential election; and was sworn in for a fresh four-year term on May 29, 2011.

The National Planning Commission report confirms
the fears by Nigerians that unemployment has been
on the rise in the country with unofficial estimates
putting it at above 30 per cent. It is also one of many other reports by national, regional, and global bodies indicating that the efforts being put in place by the Jonathan administration may not be yielding the required results.

In June, the World Bank released a report, Nigeria
Economic Report, stating that unemployment rate
worsened from “12% of the working population in
2006 to 24% in 2011.”

“Preliminary indications are that this upward trend
continued in 2012,” the World Bank stated. More report details The Population Commission report also stated that 51.18 million Nigerians were employed in the economy in 2011.

The report stated that figures from the NBS clearly
illustrated the deep challenges in Nigeria’s labour
market. “The NBS estimates that Nigeria’s population grew by 3.2 per cent in 2011 from 159.3 million people in 2010 to 164.4 million in 2011, reflecting rapid population growth.

“Unemployment was higher in rural areas at 25.6 per cent than in urban areas, where it was 17 per cent on average,’’ the report added.
The report urged that efforts to create an
environment conducive for job creation must be
redoubled.

It stated that the Federal Ministry of Labour and
Productivity reported resolving 279 of the 328 labour complaints it received in 2011. This represent 85 per cent rate of resolution of complaints.

It stated further that the number of complaints
received increased compared with 263 recorded in
2010, adding that the resolution rate of 85 per cent
improved from 51 per cent in 2010.

“The Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity also reported a decreased in the percentage of man hours lost to strikes in 2011; and an increase in the number of persons trained and equipped under skills acquisition programmes to establish their own
trade,’’ the report said. It stated that the number of jobs created in 2011 was reported as 209,239 by the Ministry of Labour and
Productivity.

Politics › Re: Iran Condoles With Nigeria Over Crash by omenka(m): 1:28pm On Oct 05, 2013
I feel hugely disapointed by what most posters are saying here. Their coments reek of undue extreme prejudice. Iran under Rouhani is diferent than Iran under Ahmedinajad.

Rouhani puts his life on the line just like the former Egyptian president Anwar Sa'adat (God rest his soul) for towing the path he does with the West. Hell, he even recognizes the Holocaust, accepts the imperatives of a Two State Solution to Israeli Palestinian palaver, and is willing to negotiate on the country's nuclear infrastructure!! What more does the world wanthuh

And as for the greatest war monger of all time, Natanyahu, who's chosen iran as his prefered bogeyman, it's abt time he started seeing things in a different light and show some respect to other nations. He has a knack for shooting down every peaceful means of resolving conflicts, approving construction of houses in occupied teritories just days after saying israel wants to 'talk'! Now if that isnt hypocrisy and sabotage i dont know what else is. All these he does, simply because Israel has and would always have United States suport no matter what (talk abt a spoilt cocky kid).

I urge us all to recognize the change of policy and diplomacy coming from Tehran cos that would give them the impetus to do more and perhaps nudge their allies in thesame direction. Whether or not what is coming out of Tehran is mere ''charm offensive'' (as Natanyahu puts it) remains to be established.

bloggernaija: These guys like the politicians are a bunch of jokers .
Lazy ,unthinking typical Nigerian .
In that organisation ,is there nobody there to do the maths that Nigeria cannot afford that much money ,even if the country was not corrupt?
That is about $7 billion in a country where over 50% are very very poor.
Don't be deceived young man, Nigeria has that kind of money. Think about it, Jonathan with his accomplices stole over a trillion naira in the name of subsidy to execute his 2011 presidential ambition.
Also, last year, defense budget was over a trillion!!
While at it, throw in the presidential air fleet (and Jonathan's knack for sending the country's planes to go convey foreigners from their country down here to attend useless meetings)

Now, why is it so difficult to spend same or a good fraction of the agreed amount on education??
The answer is very simple : because the children of the thieves who run this country have nothing to do with it's education system whatsoever.

And the big question indeed, just as Fagae put it, is "I want to ask one basic question: Is it political to
ask government to be responsible enough to implement an agreement she willingly entered into?."

In saner climes, things like this is capable of bringing a govt down to its knees, but here you see the clown carrying on with his stupid hat and stupid smile like there's something funny about the country's deplorable condition.

I hope you guys watched the Aljazeerah documentary on how America's old people is part of a big business for the Govt. and individuals alike whilst receiving little or no care at all coupled with being physically abused by the caregivers themselves

go and watch : ELDERLY INCORPORATED

I'll prefer to live in my hometown surrounded by familiar faces(family members) in my old age and eat whatever they can afford to feed me with than to be shipped to one elderly home all in the name of getting good care on which would be paid from my pension.Even the care isn't a guarantee cheesy
Haba naw, stop this. Is our situation not worse than theirs?
Politics › Re: Nigeria Sixth Worst Country To Grow Old, Says UN Report by omenka(m):
Nigerians and their pathetic mentality. They prefer to remain oblivious of their problem instead of identifying and solving them.

To any sane mind, the report should represent a call to duty. Patriotism is bourne out of the premium govt places on the life of each and every citizen of the country. There are countries out there that could go to war just for the sake of one ordinary citizen. Such an ordinary citizen in turn would be willing to lay down his life for his country. The case of the last prisoner exchange between Israel and Palestine quickly comes to mind. One Israeli exchanged for over a thousand Palestinians!!

In our case, the govt (state and federal alike) totally abdicates her responsibility choosing rather to foster division, enmity, prejudice, and extreme mistrust amongst us just to carve an area of extreme control for themselves.

Rather than attack the message as propaganda, we should encourage the government to find solutions to the issues raised therein.

I wonder what these PDP tauts realy want. Time after time they gather in droves online chanting "opposition bigwigs sponsor boko haram". And their reason, wait for it: they have never condemned their activity!!!
I imagine even the most warped minds wouldn't imagine such logic, but these guys do!

Now I ask, has condemnation of barbarism ever solved any of it??
Is it the responsibility of the opposition to advice a sitting govt as to how the country should be run??

And now a statement has been issued which unequivocally condemns the sect's activities, while offering a way out of the apparent stalemate (the SOE obviously has failed). Yet these faceless bigoted cretins still churn out gibberish and vile remarks, attacking the leaders of the opposition instead of taking notes to relay same to their empty headed drunken master!

You guys should go tell useless leader to sit up and do what Nigerians put him up there to do, and if he knows opposition leaders sponsor the sect let him get them arrested pronto and put to summary execution! And he should wipe that silly smirk off his face when talking about Boko Haram cos aint nothing funny about tens of brothers and sisters that die daily in the hands of those demons due to his crass incompetence!!
