After reading this piece i did a little reseach on net on anoda forum where fish farmers disputed the claims abt bio disc and some agreed dt it only aids d immune system bt has nothing to do with growth.

ab1x: The foreign or floating feeds is just for 1 1/2 month, the local feeds is for the rest of the months that is additional 2 1/2 months, 10 days. Thus, everything amounts to 4 months 10 days.



Mathematically; 1.5 floating plus 2.5 local that is 4 months



Plus additional 10 days



Making 4 months 10 days.

After which you switch over to local feeds(2mm size). Here is the formula that I used in my farm and I can confirm to you authoritatively that I can boast of fish weighing between 2KG to 2.5KG within four months, 1 week.



FM (Danish) 72% 40
Toasted Soya 20
GNC 20
Indomie or biscuit 20
Premix 1
Lysine 1
Vit C 200grams
DCP 1
Molasis 10
Floxinor 1
Salt 1


Sorry, I don't use maize, cassava flake, koko garri, Wheat offal, rice meal, pKC or what have u.



I used the above formula for 3 and half month after which I change to;



FM (local) 20
Broiler starter 50
GNC 40
TS 40
Flour 30
Indomie 20
Premix 1
Lysine 1
Vit C 150grams
Salt 1
Molasis 10
Floxinor 1



Please note that floxinor is just a kind of antibiotics to prevent them from illness or sicknss so to say.


You must also avoid excess salt because it will reduce the weight of fish since salt itself is medicinal in nature.


Above all, stop using short cut in rearing fish otherwise u will see short cut at selling point. Use the right formula and see the power of right formula. Just my two cents.

@robonski and Ab1x Thanks, the years of experience u are giving out free is priceless u are givin alot of us d confidence to venture into fish farming.

robonski15: At the third month farmers tend to switch to local feed and they sort for a good local feed... Back then I used local feed, I had a good combination but I found out that most of the ingredient are adultarated, especially the fish meal.. And fish meal is the main ingredient to produce a good feed and for rapid growth.. Some farmers include blood meal but I bet that majority of the so called blood meal are not they are sometimes burnt tyre.. I know right now u may be wandering but yes that's the truth..Pardon me to use broken english abeg "dis my leg don waka because of this feed formulation wetin I see na only God know" Am not saying there aint no good ingredient out there but most of them are fake, and u feed your fish and realise that they don't grow as expected..

So I stopped using local feed and
I deviced a method that after three month I switch to VITAL feed.. If u compare the cost of vital feed and the local feed we spend time and energy on its not that big.. And truthfully vital feed is not an imported feed it is made here in nigeria so to me vital feed is also a local feed.. Some farmers may say we do local feed to reduce cost and I laugh at their ignorance.. It is better to go straight to the point than cutting corners and whereby you may still be cheated on the local feed.. When u have a good fish its better you feed them with quality to harvest quality..

Since I used earthen pond and a flow through method for that matter and since used water is coming out from other ponds, I had to treat them with oxy and B/vit. Mix it with the 2mm with the aid of vegetable oil to avoid any form of sickness. Prevention they say is better than cure.


After the above foreign feeds then I changed to the formula earlier posted.

They ate 2100KG of local feeds excluding the above floating feeds within 4mths 10 days.

Please note the more the fish meal you applied the faster you get the desire result.

I am not saying there are no shortcuts, but the process is cumbersome and it is time wasting. Why not use the right formula and get the right result and profit.

I cant really give a price because land varies frm place to place depending on d location and proximity to d town or a developing areas. This are questns dt can be answered by land agents. wt am just tryin to say is dt its much beta than what we av in Lagos. Its less than two hours drive frm Ibadan and d ppl are ok.

ab1x: 30 by 40 is okay. It can occupy between 2000 to 2500 pieces of fish till maturity. Avoid digging big earthen pond because at the point of selling the fish, u will encounter lots of problem such as pumping out of the water from the pond which is time wasting, packing of the fish for scaling is another problem and so on.
