yes ds happened to me last yr along ore/ sagamu exp d truck driver fell asleep and vered of his lane and wanted to crush us bt our driver escaped by d whiskers bt d truck lost balance and d truck driver died while d motor boy sustained severe injuries. ab1x: You need to make use of coppens at least for 1 and a half month
After which you switch over to local feeds(2mm size). Here is the formula that I used in my farm and I can confirm to you authoritatively that I can boast of fish weighing between 2KG to 2.5KG within four months, 1 week.



FM (Danish) 72% 40
Toasted Soya 20
GNC 20
Indomie or biscuit 20
Premix 1
Lysine 1
Vit C 200grams
DCP 1
Molasis 10
Floxinor 1
Salt 1


Sorry, I don't use maize, cassava flake, koko garri, Wheat offal, rice meal, pKC or what have u.



I used the above formula for 3 and half month after which I change to;



FM (local) 20
Broiler starter 50
GNC 40
TS 40
Flour 30
Indomie 20
Premix 1
Lysine 1
Vit C 150grams
Salt 1
Molasis 10
Floxinor 1



Please note that floxinor is just a kind of antibiotics to prevent them from illness or sicknss so to say.


You must also avoid excess salt because it will reduce the weight of fish since salt itself is medicinal in nature.


Above all, stop using short cut in rearing fish otherwise u will see short cut at selling point. Use the right formula and see the power of right formula. Just my two cents.

@robonski and Ab1x Thanks, the years of experience u are giving out free is priceless u are givin alot of us d confidence to venture into fish farming.

robonski15: At the third month farmers tend to switch to local feed and they sort for a good local feed... Back then I used local feed, I had a good combination but I found out that most of the ingredient are adultarated, especially the fish meal.. And fish meal is the main ingredient to produce a good feed and for rapid growth.. Some farmers include blood meal but I bet that majority of the so called blood meal are not they are sometimes burnt tyre.. I know right now u may be wandering but yes that's the truth..Pardon me to use broken english abeg "dis my leg don waka because of this feed formulation wetin I see na only God know" Am not saying there aint no good ingredient out there but most of them are fake, and u feed your fish and realise that they don't grow as expected..

So I stopped using local feed and
I deviced a method that after three month I switch to VITAL feed.. If u compare the cost of vital feed and the local feed we spend time and energy on its not that big.. And truthfully vital feed is not an imported feed it is made here in nigeria so to me vital feed is also a local feed.. Some farmers may say we do local feed to reduce cost and I laugh at their ignorance.. It is better to go straight to the point than cutting corners and whereby you may still be cheated on the local feed.. When u have a good fish its better you feed them with quality to harvest quality..

Since I used earthen pond and a flow through method for that matter and since used water is coming out from other ponds, I had to treat them with oxy and B/vit. Mix it with the 2mm with the aid of vegetable oil to avoid any form of sickness. Prevention they say is better than cure.


After the above foreign feeds then I changed to the formula earlier posted.

They ate 2100KG of local feeds excluding the above floating feeds within 4mths 10 days.

Please note the more the fish meal you applied the faster you get the desire result.

I am not saying there are no shortcuts, but the process is cumbersome and it is time wasting. Why not use the right formula and get the right result and profit.

I cant really give a price because land varies frm place to place depending on d location and proximity to d town or a developing areas. This are questns dt can be answered by land agents. wt am just tryin to say is dt its much beta than what we av in Lagos. Its less than two hours drive frm Ibadan and d ppl are ok.

ab1x: 30 by 40 is okay. It can occupy between 2000 to 2500 pieces of fish till maturity. Avoid digging big earthen pond because at the point of selling the fish, u will encounter lots of problem such as pumping out of the water from the pond which is time wasting, packing of the fish for scaling is another problem and so on.

excelsiorfarm: raising grow out and the most essential of fish farming had already being made simple in the manual, if you are patience enough and read with graphic pic of the hatching section, you don't need to even ask, because many had gone ahead to use it and start hatchery, you can go see in a real training, though I know many might not like this, but send your email so I can send you a vid that starts from the stripping and ask me questions, are u from ogbomoso?

Am not frm Ogbomoso bt schooled there its an ideal place to start farmin due to low level of risk when compared to Lagos where u can b duped coupled wt few farming spaces.

@robonski what kind of feed do u use ie durante, coppens etc and do u use formulateds feeds and at what month do u harvest(i.e juvenile fishes).

@excelsiofarm I av been busy all ds while planning on hw to start my farm in Ogbomoso. I just finished reviewin ur manual on catfish farming ds morning. It is really nice and helpful bt not dt elaborate i.e the hatching process shd have been supported with pictures just as u showed diff pictures of ponds.

for the start, 2 Okadas gave me 60k every month. Both Okadas purchased for 150k (they don't have to be new).
I moved to 4 Okadas and was getting 120k a month after 4 months.
Now with 8 Okadas, I get at least 200k monthly after 10 months and with the capability to expand every month but don't want to because its becoming difficult to manage. Every Sunday is party time at my place when those boys are delivering.

Invested in poultry and will soon have capability to produce about 3,000 eggs per week with an average of 400 eggs per day.
Now, I'm extremely worried about how and where to sell.

If you can manage people, you'll find a lot of small businesses that won't take your time or require your presence.

When I see people suggesting marketing stuff, selling clothes, photography, recharge card printing, importation, etc, I just laugh. Some people are just clueless, they think business is a thing to play with.
When you start a business, no matter how small, you have started something that has the potential of taking your life or giving you a life. If you play with it you may be playing with your life.
Many small businesses you see around that inspire you to want to build a Kiosk by the road side or rent a shop, are suffering in silence.

Do your thing your own way sir. Simply look around and start by doing something that will meet people's need, something that will make people wait for you even while you are not around. That is the Goldmine you should invest in and they abound everywhere around you.

on point u are one of d few ppl practicisin business man. Running a business is not moi moi tinz its a risky venture dt may even take u out of your present job if it outgrow your expectation

@excelsiofarm you are on point just as we knw in livestock foundational stock is important so also in fishery buyin a juveline as u said must b 5-7 inches bt to get a sincere farmer dt will sell healthy and quality fingerlins/juvenile. Pls continue to educate us on hatchery.

Like hw to negotiate wt clients dealing wt ppl who are not as educated as u are. Getting trusted ppl. Most of them are used to famboyant lifestyles. Do u think farming is moimoi? If u are not patient u cant succed and farming has gone beyond planting maize or yams it involves technical skills and expertise.

robonski15: management practices differs from farm to farm.. I record different mortality rate with the same management practices at different stocking,though minimal.. But the least i have recorded was 4 death out of 3000 juvenile for 5 month.. I guess u should give them good management and find out on your own.. Thanks
