It has been a while I commented in this thread. ayosmart i thought Astron imported camborough pigs, and when you use the term terminal sire line, in my limited knowledge of pig genetics you mean the boars imported are solely for producing market pigs and not establishing a breeding line. I happen to have seen the boars at iart, they have large white, landrace, duroc and one called genconverter.
The desire for pure bred pigs is universal but hybrids are better suited for most commercial farms. We need to specialise and allow breeder farms handle the management of the pure lines. Large white and landrace are reputed sow line breeds while the duroc are terminal. The current rave camborough is actually a large white /landrace hybrid. I believe farmers should know this and know what they are buying. Pure breeds are far more expensive than hybrids.
Lastly management of these breeds is very vital so in your desire to aquire, have in mind that the purest breed with suboptimal care is a waste of resources.
I would love to see a picture of your animals ayosmart.
Nice Info!

The brewery waste feed(its the major bulk of feed given because of cheap cost and availability) but wont give much weight to finisher pigs.

Good day. I'm a housewife but will like to go into pig farming because of the not so much supervision it requires. I've a family member who has been in the biz for yrs in oke aro & I've discussed about starting there by renting a pen & paying for the mgt while I come like 3times a week. I'm yet to visit the place but I hope to start in jan next year. But ur assessment of d place has put a dampener on it. In your opinion, what can I do differently to be successful in the biz? Input from others will be welcome as well who are familiar with the place.
i am not trying to disrepute the place or discourage you But a place touted to be the biggest piggery farm in west Africa should be more organised and well quipped by Government. The business is a multimillion Naira investment(if not more) which could fetch taxes for government. A friend of my mum who retired is also at Oke Aro but she does complain that she is not making enough profit compared to the cost of personnel and rent( a big pen goes for like 5k per month).Like the woman i spoke with, she has being in d biz for like 13yrs and she is doing well. on supervision like Dejia spoke earlier, biz you don't monitor or familiar with dont thrive well in nigeria.
AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by omode2(m): 10:19pm On Nov 03, 2015
I was at The popular Oke Aro Pig Farm touted to be the biggest pig farm in west Africa. But it was a mix bag, the positive is that I saw more of women in piggery, with many attendants were female. also there is some level of Organization in terms of ready supply of feed ingredients and market for sale of live pigs and pens for rent. but the draw back is in low level of hygiene for such a place claimed to be the biggest in west Africa. In saner climate, such a place can never be certified or such animals fit for human consumption. The breeds are of low quality, the bulk of feed are brewery or industrial waste which can't meet the nutritional needs of pigs. lastly the roads that leads to the place is in bad condition which will invariably add to the cost of doing business.

At Grahyt,

You quoted OP's post without saying anything at the end of it. Lol - sleep still dey catch you this morning?

At OP,

Check out a thread in the romance section titled ''If You Are 30+ and Single Let's Talk''. I think it might help.

Siamia a lady authored the thread and a WhatsApp chat group was created to enhance healthy friendships & romantic relationships in a safe, secure and be your brother's keeper kind of way.

Siamia vouches that members are authentic & sincere, well truth is she only said that about the men I don't know about my gender.

Read the thread first (the few pages you can) and then decide if you want to join the chat group and see where that leads to. No pressure ooo abeg just keep an open mind and explore the possibilities of friendships first.

Only tasteless and classless women will be all over you because of your job, apartment and car. Tasteful women with class (like moi wink ) will be more concerned with your manners, personal hygiene & grooming then your overall comportment as a man.

Me - I'm a sucker for

1. Neat men with shaved armpits, clean underwear and surroundings. That your apartment won't count if its messy & untidy.

2. Well spoken & written English which reveals a depth of intelligence (like that dude LordReed I am electronically attracted to him just for his written English too bad he's married).

3. Courteous & well mannered men amongst other things like lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

No offence meant bro, but I ain't really feeling your written English enough to gravitate towards you as a woman. It's good but could be better with punctuation marks where necessary. Just saying no offence meant.
you are funny I feel your points is well noted.

Avoid all forms of credit sales as much as you can.
Credit sales to clients as a rule must be redeemed before a new one is advanced. Watch out for retailers mostly women, they do ask for large volume of supply, sell it off, then use your money to pay off other debtors. They even have the guts to ask you for more when you refuse, they divert to a another person and feed you with stories.
The best way to manage them when offering credit is - pay for old credit given before a new demand and supply is made.
Credit offers can deplete your capital effortlessly.
That is why am skeptical abr d poultry biz I was thinking of diversifying also to poultry bt d credit thing is scary.

Finally I made it to the very last page of a thread on Nairaland. Beautiful piece @jethro2, so much detail and in-depth breakdown of your real life experience. Thank you once again for reiterating the fact that EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER and all these one day seminars and skill acquisition workshops are just scams. There's no way one can learn a skill in one day and start a business just like that. Many thanks to all you wonderful Nairalanders for all the love you show here by sharing. @Choiceman, @omode2, @Pavore9, @joive, @securi, @kalusam, @jeffnyson @soloxam, @greenmatorganic and everyone else who contributed to this thread, y'all have no clue how much you've inspired a peasant a communal farmer like myself. God bless you madam @jethro2 and everybody that made this thread worth my vigil...i read through the night page by page "sometimes I go back to read a page again when some issues reoccur". With the kind of access I have to lands at locations nearer to Lagos than Saki I take this up as a challenge!!! But be sure I'll be starting in my small 2plot yard where I live...

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PIC PIGS IN NIGERIA.
There is only one farm where one can get pure -breed of PIC pig in Nigeria and that is .....FARMS LTD. All who claim to Have PIC Pigs either bought from this farm or imported se men to Nigeria to Upgrade their breed. if you buy from this farm you have to be sure of what you are buying, hence you may mistake slaughter line for parent line. some farmers bought slaughter line of PIC pig and claim to have pure breed of PIC. what they have is meant for pork production and should never be used as breeder. when you are buying, ask question or buy from a reputable farm.
where is your farm located in Ogbomoso?

@coldplay you made some point esp d human angle point of view. She will b dealin with ppl who are mostly illitrates and we knw hw some of them think, some will even think u are using their virtue or star and could be diabolical(well jetro knows them better). Bt on some issues raised like are goin for some program like MBA, i think its off d shelve. What they teach is mostly theoritical wc does nt apply to her biz thats why we are where we are today too much paper qualificatn. Agric is practical even what she is doin superceeds a Phd thesis i knw a prof in agric who failed woefully in his fish farm thinkin its his field. On irrigation, I ask at what cost? We are talking of constant supply goin into several hectares of land. This is where govt comes in wt dams and channelling of water, irrigation becomes expensive when u are talkin abt large farms. The irony of it is dt wt no rain d price is still ridiculous. Again govt comes in, no commodity boards to curb glut. The truth must b told an individual or group cant do d work of govt. If not we will only wear ourselves out.

Farmers in the house well done. Please how do one go about sales of the produced pig. Production to me is so easy but where/who to sell to, at profit is what bothers my mind. I am intending starting piggery on a small scale thanks
The market is always there. The demands far outweights supply. Where is ur base?

There is somethng that can be done in this case and that is get another source of water, irrigate your farm!
she said she cant meet demand and she had to make use of other farmers which she cant irrigate their farms.

The big question of how the farmer manages the tomatoes would have been easy to attend to if rainfall did not become an issue.
The excitement at the begining was much
They all nurse the tomatoes and were counting days
Just few days to when we were suppose to transplant then the rain seizes
2 days 3 days one week , two weeks
And......It was terrible
The lack of rain made many farmers to incure losses. Even those dt made it to d market were priced at ridiculous amount. Lesson, there is nothing u can do abt things you dont have control of..

Ogbomoso is a good place for farming bt we have few bad eggs. Hw can u b paying 5k for security, then wt profit will u make. As Jetro said, farmin just like any biz takes time to master and will only b lucrative in d long run wt strict discipline. Lets take maize for example, hw many bags of dry maize can u get frm an acre? Nairaland is full of computer farmers misleading ppl like some on fish farm claiming millions.
