PoliticsOur Private Jet Cost N7 Billion, Not N9 Billion – Amaechi by OmoPastor(op): 9:31am On May 06, 2013
Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday said contrary to reports, the state government’s private jet costs $45m (N7.1bn) and not $57 (N9bn).

The governor said this through his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, in an interview with our correspondent in Port Harcourt.

Amaechi described the allegations that he inflated the cost of the jet by $10m as unfounded and a figment of the imagination of those spreading such false information.

According to him, the allegations were targeted at distracting the state government from its responsibility of developing the state.

“The state government has never announced that the aircraft was purchased for $57m. That statement did not come from us. The aircraft was bought for US$45m. We see all these as a distraction,” Amaechi said.

Meanwhile, two aides to the Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mr. Chikodi Dike, were on Saturday barred by a team of policemen from entering the council secretariat.

The two aides were the Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House, Mr. Tony Okocha and the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chinda.

The incident, which occurred around 2.30pm, came barely 24 hours after a team of policemen had sealed off the council secretariat allegedly on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu.

Workers of the council and visitors on the premises were also ordered out of the secretariat by the policemen on Friday before sealing off the place.

Speaking with newsmen outside the premises of the council, Okocha described the development as a coup against the people of Obio/Akpor and the people of the state in general.

Dike had earlier gone to the secretariat for the monthly environmental sanitation, but was warned by the fierce-looking policemen that had mounted guard at the gate of the council secretariat for two days to stay away.

Okocha, who was peeved by the development, went to the council secretariat in company with Dike and Chinda.

However, the policemen stood their ground when the Chief of Staff and other government officials arrived the secretariat, saying they were acting on the order of the Divisional Police Officer of Rumuokoro Police Station.

Okocha said, “You can see that the whole place is blocked with police vehicles and policemen. This morning, the police PPRO had said no such thing existed. That is why I came to see things for myself.

“I was trying to find out the man who gave the instruction: the policeman I saw said it was the DPO who gave the instruction and he said the DPO is not around. I said okay; give me the name of the next person around.

“What I suspect is a coup in a democratic setting; a coup against Obio/Akpor local government and a coup against Rivers State. We know their plan is to provoke the people of Rivers so that there would be some kind of mayhem for them to declare a state of emergency.”

He told newsmen that the state police boss had told him that the order to seal off the council secretariat was from the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar.

He described the action of the police as anti-government, saying, “I don’t know whose script they are really acting out. I am shocked.”

The PPRO, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, had earlier said policemen were sent to the secretariat following a tip-off that there was a plot to attack the council secretariat.

AutosSkoda Beats Benz, BMW, Land Rover To Emerge As Best Car In Satisfaction Survey by OmoPastor(op): 3:27pm On May 05, 2013
The Skoda Yeti has knocked off Mercedes Benz, BMW and Jaguar to come top in a car satisfaction survey, with two other Skoda models also making the top ten.

Skoda’s flagship model, Superb, was second and the Octavia came sixth.

More than 46,000 car owners took part in this year’s survey conducted for Auto Express.

The Yeti achieved a top score of 92.65 per cent in overall satisfaction ratings.

According to the magazine, the Yeti is a “compact sports utility vehicle offering multi-purpose practicality, hatchback handling and genuine off-road ability in a great value package.”

Jaguar XF saloon took third spot in the survey followed by the Renault Scenic, Mazda CX-5, Skoda Octavia, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Land Rover Discovery, BMW 3 series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The Editor-in-Chief, Auto Express, Steve Fowler, said: “We’ve always liked the Yeti, it’s a former Auto Express Car of the Year, so it’s great to see so many owners agreeing with us.

“They like its practicality, the tech on board and how easy and enjoyable it is to drive.”

The magazine said newcomers to the top ten list were Land Rover Discovery and the multi-purpose Renault Scenic.

“For the British company especially, it’s great news given the recent launch of premium new models like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, they’re clearly moving in the right direction,” Fowler said.

Report said Czech car-maker, Skoda has undergone a huge image change since it was taken over by German car giant, Volkswagen in the early 1990s.

Before that, its unreliable reputation made it the butt of countless jokes, such as “how do you double the value of a Skoda? Fill it with petrol.”

But last month sales of new Skodas hit an all-time high, with car registrations breaking the 9,000 barrier for the first time.

A total of 9,711 customers bought a 13-plate Skoda in March, up 14.2 per cent on last year.

PoliticsNigeria: The Immorality In Awarding Public Land To Turai's Personal NGO by OmoPastor(op): 3:07pm On May 05, 2013
The much celebrated case on the piece of land involving former First Lady, Turai Yar'Adua's NGO, the Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation (WAYEF) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration has been concluded, with the court setting aside the revocation of the said land by the FCT administration.

Going by the Nigerian mentality, the defeat of the FCT administration in the suit instituted by Hajia Turai was a thing of joy for some people because another organ representing the government had been rubbished. A section of the media have repeatedly and deliberately helped in drumming it into the ears of everyone that the decision of the FCT administration to revoke the said land was an attempt to cheat the former First Lady. Thus, the ruling of the court concluded a script that had been hashed right from time on this matter.

It is ironic that no one in the media seemed interested in the substance of the case and everyone appeared satisfied that the defendant could not give evidence that the revocation was carried out in overriding public interest. The basis of this decision on revocation, to the court, appeared weak. Thus, the learned judge quashed the revocation and returned the piece of land to Hajia Turai. My problem here is this: Is it satisfactory that a case is won simply because there is no convincing argument by one making a case, even when it is glaring that an anomaly has occurred? Should we simply close our eyes to an anomaly just because the presentation is weak? Now that judgment has been given, can we return to the basis of the case, at least for the purpose of soul searching, and to convince ourselves whether Hajia Turai was morally justified to appropriate a piece of land acquired for a public institution to personal use. It is important that we carry out this self re-examination so that we will not be glorifying immorality and instituting corruption and greed as a good way to live.

I am asking us to do these because this is not the first time the former First Lady will be enmeshed in this kind of corruption web. A few months before her husband's ailment deteriorated, leading to his eventual demise, Hajia Turai launched a Cancer foundation and hospital project in which N5billion was acquired. I attended that launch and I saw how moved Nigerians were to support what they considered a worthy cause. Now, three years after the demise of her husband and some four years or so since the cancer hospital project was initiated, Nigerians have not seen anything to justify the huge donation collected by Hajia Turai. In the same vein, the WAYEF for which she claimed to have diverted the Peace Mission land has been in limbo. In fact, the WAYEF was functional for barely two years and it made virtually no impact considering the mass local and international appeal the NGOs of Dame Patience Jonathan, whom she abhors so passionately, has made within the last three years. Nigerians should be asking questions by now. Where is the N5billion collected by Turai?

SportsRangers Now Want Confed Cup Glory by OmoPastor(op): 2:30pm On May 05, 2013
Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) club, Enugu Rangers has set their sights on success in the Caf Confederation Cup after their failure to progress to the group stages of the Caf Champions League.

A brace from Dario Cardoso and another from Henry Camara ensured Sunday Mba’s effort on 56 minutes was merely academic as Rangers lost out to Angolan club, Recreativo do Libolo in the second round on Saturday.

Rangers will now drop into Caf’s second tier competition and the club will look to become the first Nigerian side to win the Confederation Cup title after its original name and format was changed.

Caf decided to merge the African Cup Winners' Cup and the Caf Cup in 2004 which brought about the Confederation Cup.

“We want to be inspired by what (European club champions), Chelsea have done this season. They crashed out of the Uefa Champions League but are now just one game away from winning the Europa League title.

“I will be lying if I said we would not have like to go further in the Champions League but now we must focus on the Confederation Cup,” Chairman of Rangers Festus Onu told supersport.com.

The club chief then went on to salute the players of the club “who fought hard in Angola and only lost due to hard luck.”

“We played well and our boys fought hard. We only lost due to hard luck.

“While we were losing 2-1 in the second half, our boys knew that one more goal from us would take us into the next round of the competition so they pushed forward to get the goal.

“We were caught on the counter and there was no way back for us,” he said.

Rangers have won the NPFL title in their different guises on six occasions and have been Cup champions five times.

Founded in 1970, Rangers will be making their third appearance in the Confederation Cup after two previous attempts in 2004 and 2005.

The Flying Antelopes failed to go past the group stages in 2004 and crashed out at the intermediate stages the following year.

Christianity EtcEgyptian Newspaper: Jews Drink Egyptian Blood by OmoPastor(op): 11:11am On May 04, 2013
An Egyptian newspaper has publish multiple articles promoting the old anti-Semitic blood libel, claiming Jews drink gentile blood.

Then Egyptian newspaper "Misrelgdida" has recently published multiple features promoting the Jewish "blood libel" - an old anti-Semitic trope that claims Jews drink Christian and Muslim blood.

The first article, published late last month, is written by a Palestinian Arab, Mennat al-Sayed. The article gives a "history" of Passover blood rituals that, he claims continues to this day against Arabs.

Al-Sayed says that Christian neighbors of Jews were scared of the holiday because they were worried about abduction and ritual slaughtering for their blood.

He claims that Jews would hunt for Christian babies who never tasted wine and stab them to death in a ceremony in the synagogue, after which they would distribute the blood to drink four cups of "wine" during the Passover seder, while singing and dancing with their families.

The articles, spotted by the Elder of Ziyon blog, are published in the Arabic-language paper that claims it believes, "in credibility and transparency and strive[s] to symbolize the new Egypt.

The truth is the basis of our profession, and we believe in humanity and compassion, and that justice is the basis of our humanity, and believe in the future as long as we are alive."

The second article, written by Amr Abdel Rahman, the managing editor of the paper, is entitled, "When the Jews drank the blood of Egyptians on Passover."

It states:

"Recently Jews celebrated their important Passover holiday, and this feast - for those who do not know - includes bloody and exciting rituals, and the most exciting of these rituals were probably still practiced secretly in Egypt by some members of the Jewish community.[...]

The victim must be a non-Jewish young adult, of course, either Christian or Muslim.

His blood is taken and dried to a powder so they may save the remainder for the next holiday... The blood must be used where the Christians or Muslim victims are under ten years old.

They extract the blood with extremely sharp needles and put it in the barrel.

These needles ensure that the blood exits the victim very slowly, and thus ensures the painful agony of the victim, his torment is pleasure for the vampire Jews who are keen to pursue this ritual in all its details, they love and enjoy it though it is difficult to understand!"

The articles come shortly after The Sunday Times of London published what campaigners called a "modern blood libel" cartoon, depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a big-nosed builder, constructing a wall out of the blood of Palestinians, or Muslim blood and bodies.

FamilyObama Approves Emergency Contraception For 15-year-olds by OmoPastor(op): 8:35am On May 04, 2013
President Barack Obama said on Thursday he is comfortable with a U.S. government agency’s decision to allow over-the-counter purchases of emergency contraceptive pill for anyone 15 and older.

Some critics have complained girls that young should not be allowed to purchase the pills without a doctor’s approval. But Obama told a news conference in Mexico City that the decision was based on “solid scientific evidence.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday appealed a court order directing the agency to make morning-after emergency contraception pills available without a prescription to all girls of reproductive age.

Lawyers with the Justice Department filed the appeal with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, according to court documents.

The appeal is the latest foray in the years-long legal battle over the pill known as “Plan B,” a drug that has also sparked political and religious clashes. If taken up to 120 hours after unprotected sex, it is designed to prevent pregnancy.

The government is seeking to overturn U.S. District Judge Edward Korman’s ruling from April 5 that required the FDA to make the emergency contraception available over-the-counter to women of all ages within 30 days.

Obama said it was not his decision to make, that it was up to the FDA and his Health and Human Services secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, to decide.

“The rule that’s been put forward by the FDA, Secretary Sebelius has reviewed, she’s comfortable with. I’m comfortable with it,” he said.

PoliticsI Can’t Be Chairman Where Buhari Is Present – IBB by OmoPastor(op): 9:29am On May 03, 2013
The maiden edition of Mr Sam Nda-Isaiah Lecture Series in Minna, Nigeeri State, brought to the fore the atmosphere of friendship between former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari, and former military president General Ibrahim Babangida as the latter conceded the chairmanship of the occasion to Buhari.

Babangida was reluctant to speak at the occasion as the chairman, but when pressed upon, got up and stated that he could not be chairman in an occasion where Buhari was present.

“I can’t be a chairman at this occasion when General Buhari is here, and this is for two reasons: one he was 5 and I was 6, and those of you in the military understand what I mean; in other words he is my senior. Secondly, he was the head of state before me, so it is my pleasure and honour to formally invite General Muhammadu Buhari to declare this conference open,” IBB said, conceding the chairmanship to Buhari.

Buhari who got up to accept the offer said in the same hilarious mood: “I think that who is a Maradona is always a Maradona; it is very clear to me that General Babangida is the chairman, but since I came in here, he said to me he wouldn’t be the chairman because I was his senior and in the military, things are considered in terms of seniority”.

He, however, added that Babangida, refused to hand over his prepared speech for the occasion.

Buhari congratulated the Mr Nda Isaiah, chairman of Chairman LEADERSHIP Group, for the honour done him by the youths, saying that he deserved it due to his courage and consistency.

According to Buhari, Sam Nda-Isaiah has contributed so much to make sure that truth is told for the best interest of the nation because he has always put government and people in authority in check.

CrimePoll: The Countries Where 40% Of People Support Suicide Bombing by OmoPastor(op): 8:32am On May 03, 2013
As many as four in ten Muslims living in Afghanistan and Palestine support the use of suicide bombing, an extensive new international survey has found.

Desperate tactic: Palestinian Islamic Jihad activists parade with explosive belts filled with mock charges during a 2005 rally in the West Bank.

The high support for the desperate tactic in those war-torn regions was nearly matched in Egypt and Bangladesh, where 29 per cent and 26 per cent of respondents agreed with its use respectively.

However, the worldwide poll of Muslims by the Washington-based Pew Forum found that in most countries three-quarters or more rejected suicide bombing and other forms of violence.

Four in ten Palestinian Muslims support suicide bombing, a survey says. And in most countries surveyed, Muslims were more worried about Islamist militancy than any other form of religious violence.

The report, which is based on surveys in 39 countries with large Muslim populations, also found that large majorities want the Islamic shariah code integrated with the official law of their countries.

However, there was widespread disagreement as to what sharia includes, and who should be subject to it, said the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Three-quarters of respondents said abortion is morally wrong and 80 percent or more rejected homosexuality and sex outside of marriage.

Over three-quarters of Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia want sharia courts to decide family law issues such as divorce and property disputes.

The aftermath of a suicide bomb attack, in Kabul, Afghanistan: Nearly four-in-ten Muslims living in the war-torn central Asian country also support the use of such attacks, the international survey claimes.

Views on punishments such as chopping off thieves' hands or decreeing death for apostates is more evenly divided in much of the Islamic world, although more than three-quarters of Muslims in South Asia say they are justified.

Those punishments have helped make sharia controversial in some non-Islamic countries, where some fear radical Muslims want to impose it on Western societies.

The survey shows, however, that Muslim societies are far from monolithic in their views. "Muslims are not equally comfortable with all aspects of sharia,"the study said. "Most do not believe it should be applied to non-Muslims."

Unlike codified Western law, sharia is a loosely defined set of moral and legal guidelines based on the Koran, the sayings of Prophet Mohammad (hadith) and Muslim traditions.

Its rules and advice cover everything from prayers to personal hygiene. Princeton University political scientist Amaney Jamal, was special adviser for the project, said Muslims in poor and repressive societies tended to identify sharia with basic Islamic values such as equality and social justice.

"In those societies, you tend to see significant support for sharia," she said. By contrast, Muslims who have lived under "narrow if not rigid" Islamic systems were less supportive of sharia as the official law.

More than four-fifths of the 38,000 Muslims interviewed in 39 countries said non-Muslims in their countries could practice their faith freely and that this was good.

This view was strongest in South Asia, where 97 per cent of Bangladeshis and 96 per cent of Pakistanis agreed, while the lowest Middle Eastern result was 77 per cent in Egypt.

The survey polled only Muslims and not minorities. In several Muslim countries, Christian minorities say they cannot practice their faith freely and are subject to discrimination and physical attacks.

The survey produced mixed results on questions relating to the relationship between politics and Islam.

Democracy wins slight majorities in key Middle Eastern states - 54 per cent in Iraq, 55 per cent in Egypt - but falls to 29 per cent in Pakistan. By contrast, it stands at 81 per cent in Lebanon, 75 per cent in Tunisia and 70 per cent in Bangladesh.
Women wear the niqaab: Views on whether women should decide themselves if they should wear a headscarf vary greatly, but majorities in all countries asked said women should obey their husbands.

Views on whether women should decide themselves if they should wear a headscarf vary greatly, from 89 per cent in Tunisia and 79 per cent in Indonesia saying yes and 45 per cent in Iraq and 30 per cent in Afghanistan saying no.

Majorities from 74 per cent in Lebanon to 96 per cent in Malaysia said wives should always obey their husbands.

Only a minority saw Sunni-Shi'ite tensions as a very big problem, ranging from 38 per cent in Lebanon and 34 per cent in Pakistan to 23 per cent in Iraq and 14 per cent in Turkey.

Conflict with other religions loomed larger, with 68 per cent in Lebanon saying it was a big problem, 65 per cent in Tunisia, 60 per cent in Nigeria and 57 per cent in Pakistan.

A section of the survey on U.S. Muslims noted they 'sometimes more closely resemble other Americans than they do Muslims around the world'. Only about half say their closest friends are Muslim, compared to 95 per cent of Muslims globally.

PoliticsJonathan Ready To Forgo Second Term – Presidency by OmoPastor(op): 6:15am On May 02, 2013
The Presidency on Wednesday said President Goodluck Jonathan was ready to forget his ambition to run for second term in 2015 if the Senate passed its proposal for a single non-renewable six-year tenure into law.

Though Jonathan had made half-hearted denial of his ambition for another term in office, the body movements of the President and his loyalists had clearly shown that he was preparing to run in the 2015 general election.

But the President’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said the ambition to stage a return would be shelved if Senators decided in favour of a single term for the President and state governors.

Gulak who spoke to The PUNCH in Abuja said, “Nigerians will remember that it was President Jonathan that suggested an idea of a single term tenure from the beginning. So if the proposal becomes a law, the credit should go to the President.

“If it becomes a law and is enshrined in our constitution, the President and everybody will be bound by the provision of that law. Let us wait and see what happens.

“We are not seeing the move as a way of stopping President Jonathan from re-contesting in 2015. The law cannot be made because of one individual.

“When it takes effect, everybody will be bound by it.”

Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution had recommended non-renewable single six year tenure for the offices of President, Vice-President, governors and their deputies.

The Senate panel’s recommendation disqualifies Jonathan and incumbent governors from benefitting from the new arrangement if the recommendation becomes law.

In justifying the move, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, was quoted on Wednesday as saying that the development was the outcome of public hearings across the country.

If passed into law, Jonathan will not be eligible to contest the 2015 presidential election.

Gulak noted that the President should even be given credit for being the originator of the single-term proposal.

Jonathan had in 2011 suggested a single-term of seven years for elective offices to avoid the wrangling often associated with second-term bids.

In a related development, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, said on Wednesday that the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution would answer questions about the nature of Nigeria’s unity.

Tambuwal spoke at the opening of a retreat for members of the House AdHoc Committee on Constitution Review in Abuja.

The committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, organised the retreat to allow House members appraise the report of the People’s Public Sessions on the constitution and prepare them for the next stage of the review process.

The public sessions were held across the federation on November 10, 2012, where Nigerians voted on a 43-item template on sections of the constitution they desired amendments.

Tambuwal acknowledged that Nigeria was facing many challenges, which had forced the citizens to ask questions on the nature of the country’s union and assured that the fears expressed by the people would be addressed by the new constitution envisaged.

He said, “As you well know, our country today faces many challenges and some of our people have been asking questions about the very nature of our union.

“We hope eventually to provide Nigerians with a constitution that will answer some of these questions and further cement our hard fought unity.”

The Speaker claimed that reactions from Nigerians since the House publicly tendered the report of the People’s Public Sessions on April 18 suggested that they had confidence in the National Assembly to do a thorough representation of their views in the constitution.

However, he warned the committee members against cutting corners or attempting to impose their own views on the people in the course of appraising the report.

“So far, you have all shown remarkable patriotism but I must again emphasise the need for your work to be free of all personal bias.

“You must work only on data provided by the nationwide public hearing and your conclusion should reflect the aggregate opinion of fellow Nigerians”, the speaker stated.

But the deputy speaker said, “The results of the Peoples Public Sessions as unveiled by the House would be subjected to proper legislative action as required by the Standing Orders of the House and by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“There are no short-cuts. This retreat will give members of the committee acting on behalf of the entire House the opportunity to brainstorm on the language of the amendments where consensus has been reached.

“It is pertinent to note that the National Assembly is one. For this process to work, the House and Senate Constitution Review Committees must work together to propose the same bills and vote on the same issues.

“The Senate and the House of Representatives must an reach agreement before any section of the constitution is amended. Indeed, two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly must agree (as well).”
