Fashion / HOW TO MAKE A SEQUIN TOP - Quick And Soooo Affordable! by onnari(f): 9:07pm On Dec 21, 2013
Here is how I created the top. ( As inspired by this Hanni Y top retailing at $389.)
Step 1: I used the marking/outlining chalk to outline the area I wanted covered with the sequins.

Step 2: I then measured the outlined section of the tank top and used the measurement to cut out the measurement of sequin fabric with my scissors.

Step 3: I then began sewing the sequin piece to the tank top from the bottom up. You should tack in reverse or upwards so that when you turn the sequin piece back upright, the stitches wouldn’t show at all.

Same goes for the neckline, shoulders and sides. Although you would have to fold the edges inside and secure them with pins before embarking on your tacking mission.

Fashion / Re: A “SEW ALONG” THREAD For Sewing Enthusiasts/Tailors/Fashion Designers:DECEMBER by onnari(f): 3:42am On Dec 19, 2013
It does have a joining...look closely. it would be practically impossible to have your inverted pleats on the bodice and skirt without a joining. there is also a belt to tie at the back of the dress. Sorry ppl I'll be AWOL for a bit. Wld check in from tie to time in the main time please send in photos of ur fabrics n things so the thread doesn't get too quiet. Thnx for participating.

ibufunky: Hello Onnari, thank you soo much, please what do u mean by open nd close dart, den what does it mean to taper a dart? Thanks

Hang in there. Would go thru it all again using a plain fabric as I earlier said. Guess i got u all onfused with the term 'open dart' smiley i coined those wordS :-) It's just like making pleats on the reverse side of your fabric and sewing these pleats. The length of each pleat should begin at the at the end of your bodice(for this dress above your navel) and should end @ ur underbust. Its super easy so dont fret. Would guide u. Trying to sort out work stuff- got a lot on my plate @ the moment. Wld be with u guys shortly. :-)

Fashion / Re: A “SEW ALONG” THREAD For Sewing Enthusiasts/Tailors/Fashion Designers:DECEMBER by onnari(f): 10:35pm On Dec 13, 2013
The darts @ d back would be tapered. For the open dart, u don't need to taper those. As for each explanAtion follwed by one pic each, nairaland doesn't make it d@ easy dear. Each xplanation is followed by pics d@ relate to it.

Cut out... Make closed darts, and then Make a notch on the zipper allowance.

Watch this space for the next post on sewing the pieces together.

Ciao!

As the front mark and cut out your shoulder, neckline and armhole. Note that you must keep your zipper allowance @ arms length! Do not include that area in your markings @ all.

Back bodice:

Mark out your zipper allowance. Here I used one and a half inches.

Fashion / Re: A “SEW ALONG” THREAD For Sewing Enthusiasts/Tailors/Fashion Designers:DECEMBER by onnari(f): 9:15pm On Dec 13, 2013
Trim the sides if u can't make darts to accoMmodate the whole fabric. The waistline I'm using here is 26" so I only had to trim off about an inch @ the sides to get my perfect measurement with one and a half inch seam allowance of course.

Please note that the open darts should end on your empire line/underbust.

Open up your fold and then make your open darts(this helps accentuate the bust area)

Here I used an inch for each dart. So folded and pinned together, what you see is a half inch fold.

Here's d fabric I'll be using for this sew along.
I'll be using ankara for this sew along. I opted against polka dots cos my Orla kiely sew along dress was made in blue n white polka dots!

Place your fabric on fold.
Mark out ur shoulder, neckline and armhole( u may already be familiar with this process from the previous sew alongs)
Here I'm using the following measurements:
Shoulder - 13"
Neckline depth-8"
Armhole-17

veronix: Hi. Please can you tell me where to start measuring someone that I'd like to sew a cloth for.
Thank you.

Measurements would depend on what exactly you intend making. What is it you are measuring for?
Fashion / Re: A “SEW ALONG” THREAD For Sewing Enthusiasts/Tailors/Fashion Designers:DECEMBER by onnari(f): 7:49am On Dec 03, 2013
@simbiat two yards would do. Aldo get a contrasting coloured fabric for your lapel. The sleeve aspect would be taken care of via the sleeve tutorial.

You welcome simbiat.
so before posting material notes for our december sew along, i want to add a little tip on sleeves. For those making jackets now or later, if you are going to be using a Two piece sleeve like efosa did or a one piece sleeve that's cut like a two piece sleeve, note that these sleeves are preferable to one piece sleeves for jackets because of the way they are shaped. Our arms are naturally in an arc and not straight all the to so the sleeves are shaped that way. (You' can see fromthe sketch that the sleeves are slightly skewed- I placed straight and skewed arrows inside the sleeve pieces so you can compare the angles)
When cut straight, the advantage of the two piece is practically lost.
The first photo is a two piece sleeve and the second is a one piece sleeve that's cut like a two piece sleeve....
The arrows on the one piece shows where the joining seam goes.

Watch out for the sleeve tutorial.
