FashionRe: A “SEW ALONG” THREAD For Sewing Enthusiasts/Tailors/Fashion Designers:DECEMBER by onnari(op):
So from the look of things we are going to be doing the blue polka dot dress, #The Modcloth Sew Along. I agree with cherries on the voting and all but it's going to be a tad awkward due to the fact that fashion being spontaneous n all, changes and we might love different stuff at different points in time so creating a project schedule for a whole year might not fly cos we might have to change two or more projects.

Now back to the December sew along, good thing the dress isn't complicated or time consuming cos I have an unbelievable schedule and so pressed for time and Tutorials have to be completed by month end or thereabout.
For those who haven't sent in their previous work (me inclusive) we would have a review towards the beginning of January right from the Sika sew along to the December sew along.

There's a major change I'll be making here- for the blue polka dot dress, I won't be doing a tie as I prefer a scallop collar.(same white contrast, but the edges would be scallop shaped and there wouldn't be a tie on mine) It's the same basic process so those who want the tie thingy won't feel left out as I'll go through that as well.
D get ur fabrics ready people. Measurements and sewing materials for the sew along would be posted tomorrow ( December 2)

@simbiat- ur dress looks pretty, well done! I notice the right shoulder looks wider and a bit higher than the left although u don't know if its just your posture. And then if you could take up the length of the dress a little I think it would be more flattering.
This is a really good effort and I'm so proud of you all.
One last thing, remember to notch your princess seams to avoid puckering, and next time make you sleeve with an interfacing- it looks neater than the hem seams.

A sleeve tutorial would be put together subsequently. You aren't the only one who's asked! Lots of mails have come in asking that same question :-)

So I'm posting my photos and thought to select simple pieces as I'd like to engage more of beginners and people who are relatively new to sewing so they don't feel left out or frustrated by complex pieces.

marylandcakes: Hi all, i just stumbled on this thread today. Lovely thread.
My question is about fabric types. Can you use viscose strech material to sew an evening dress? or what are the best kind of materials amongst this list (satin, chiffon, viscose) Thanks in advance.
U can actually use all three fabrics u've mentioned for ur evening gowns.

EFOSA VAL: cheesy its not side seam its the mid seam

And thanks to all for you beautiful comments.

Onarri dear we dey wait your go ahead o.how things with you.wink
Thnx dearie- I'm doing great though a lot to attend to. As for a 'go ahead' we'l wait a week fr pics to b sent in and then begin voting for the november sewalong. Since we'l hav btw 2 weeks for november we would hav to something totally simple and quick to carry out as for the second jacket I'v decided to create a tutorial on that on my blog when I get a bit settled.

EFOSA VAL: Pictures of my sleeve, explanation follows soon.wink
Lovely illustration efosa- thumbs up.
I'm trying to find out if it's the way d pic was taken or not but does the two-piece sleeve look straight? it doesn't seem to slant inwards approaching the cuffs @ d end of the sleeves.

CelebrityP: Will get linen, later in d evening,Efosa do comment on my work, am a learner o
Ur doing great learner or no :-) ur work's gr8 although I c a few things I'l like to correct one of which is ur sleeve cap. It's really narrow. Try making ur downward slant begin @ about 4 inches from ur center fold giving a wider 'S' shape.

EFOSA VAL: grin grin grin grin onnari dear, so nice of you to come by,how have u been ?

Am not too surprised that they are not uploading their pictures cheesy the truth is jacket making is harder than some regular dresses. wink. Even at my fashion school i dont teach jackets to beginners ( pls guys no offence ment) the reason is that they need to know the basics before going to advanced stuffs. Infact this is partly why i selected the orange jacket to make first coz it seamed easy to me to explain to an online audience onlike the other that had concealed zipper pockets, roll collar, and option of band or bandless rist cheesy so
I suggest we do more simple styles on next editions for fun. Just my thought thou,i am open to suggestions o.

Now this no change anything o. I shall still finish my jacket sleeve for those who can wink
Yeah- jackets r more complicated but @ least they are participating so pics of their work ought to be sent in. Even fabric pics havnt been uploaded @ all, haba!
It spices things up all in all...
