NAWOJ Lagos Honours Democracy Heroine Kudirat Abiola as Iconic Woman 30 Years After Demise

By Naomi Onome

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has honoured the late Chief Kudirat Olayinka Abiola as its Iconic Woman in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of her assassination on June 4, 1996.

The association said the recognition was in honour of Kudirat Abiola's courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the struggle for democracy and justice in Nigeria.

Speaking on the recognition, NAWOJ Lagos Chairperson, Comrade Jumoke Johnson, described the late democracy activist as a symbol of resilience whose contributions helped shape Nigeria's democratic journey.

According to her, Kudirat Abiola was more than the wife of the late winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, noting that she emerged as a leading voice in the pro-democracy movement during one of the nation's most turbulent political periods.

"Chief Kudirat Abiola was more than the wife of Chief MKO Abiola. She was a leading activist, a strategist, and an unyielding voice for justice, even at great personal risk," Johnson said.

She added that three decades after her death, Kudirat's legacy continues to inspire women in journalism, governance, civil society, and other sectors where the pursuit of equity and justice remains paramount.

Also speaking, the Chapter Secretary, Comrade Anu M. Thomas, said the Iconic Woman recognition was instituted to celebrate women whose achievements have positively impacted society and inspired future generations.

Thomas noted that Kudirat Abiola's mobilisation of women, civil society organisations, and international stakeholders during the political crisis that followed the annulment of the June 12 election remains a remarkable example of leadership and commitment.

She said Kudirat demonstrated how advocacy and the defence of truth could influence national transformation, adding that women journalists continue to draw inspiration from her courage and determination.

"Kudirat demonstrated that journalism and activism converge when truth is threatened. As women journalists, we are strengthened by her example of deploying her voice, influence, and resources to defend what is right, even in perilous times," Thomas stated.

NAWOJ Lagos also called on governments at all levels to preserve Kudirat Abiola's legacy through policies that protect women human rights defenders and journalists. The association further urged media organisations to continue highlighting the contributions of women to Nigeria's democratic development.

The association described her assassination on June 4, 1996, as a significant loss to the nation but stressed that her life and sacrifices remain a lasting testament to the power of courage and conviction in driving social and political change.

Johnson said, "Her passing on June 4, 1996, was a national loss. Yet her life endures as proof that one woman, guided by courage and conviction, can transform a nation."

Mind Builders School Emerges as Enduring Legacy of Excellence as Bolajoko Falore Marks 70th Birthday, 50 Years in Education

By Naomi Onome

LAGOS – What started as a modest educational initiative with only 18 pupils and six teachers in a wing of a duplex in Omole Phase 1, Lagos, has blossomed into one of Nigeria’s most respected private educational institutions.

Today, Mind Builders School stands as a testament to the vision, resilience and commitment of its founder, Mrs. Bolajoko Falore, whose 70th birthday and golden jubilee in the teaching profession are set to be celebrated with a maiden annual symposium organised by the Trustees of Mind Builders Education Trust.

The symposium, scheduled to hold on June 20, 2026, at the Mind Builders School Hall in Ikeja Central Business District, Alausa, Lagos, is expected to attract notable personalities from academia, government, business and the education sector to honour a woman widely recognised for her contributions to educational development and nation-building.

The event will feature the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, as keynote speaker, while former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, will serve as guest speaker.

For many stakeholders in the education sector, the remarkable growth of Mind Builders School remains one of the clearest reflections of Mrs. Falore’s dedication to educational excellence and her unwavering belief in empowering future generations through quality learning.

Founded in 1998 under the guiding philosophy of “Building Your Child for Tomorrow’s Challenges,” the institution has evolved from its humble beginnings into a multi-campus educational enterprise known for academic excellence, leadership development, innovation and character formation.

The school currently caters to about 450 students and is supported by a workforce of 128 teaching and non-teaching staff. Over the years, it has developed into a modern educational institution with 48 classrooms and more than 15 specialised learning centres designed to provide comprehensive and practical learning experiences.

Its facilities include well-equipped Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories, Basic Science and Technology laboratories, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres, a Language Room, Mathematics Clinic, Introductory Technology Laboratory, Art Studio, Music Room, Home Economics facilities and other modern educational resources aimed at nurturing well-rounded learners.

In a move that underscores her commitment to strengthening the teaching profession, Mrs. Falore also incorporated 12 dedicated rooms within the school complex for the future establishment of a Teachers’ Training School. The initiative is expected to provide professional development opportunities for educators while promoting higher teaching standards across the broader educational community.

The school's physical expansion has also been significant. Beyond its main campus, Mind Builders School operates an annex campus in Omole Phase 2 and modern early childhood learning facilities. It also boasts a sports complex situated on a 9,000-square-metre property, featuring facilities for football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, lawn tennis and swimming, alongside a developing mini-stadium project.

Education stakeholders say one of the strongest indicators of the school's success is the accomplishments of its alumni.

Through sustained investments in quality teaching, continuous staff development, favourable teacher-to-student ratios and international exposure programmes, the institution has produced graduates who have excelled in various professional fields both within and outside Nigeria.

Between 1999 and 2015, Mrs. Falore sponsored educational exchange and learning visits for teachers and administrators to leading schools in South Africa and the United Kingdom. These programmes enabled staff members to acquire global best practices in educational delivery, leadership and school management.

The impact of those investments has continued to reflect in the institution’s academic performance and reputation as a centre for excellence and leadership development.

Several alumni of the school have graduated with first-class honours from prestigious universities in Nigeria, Europe and North America. In addition, many former staff members have gone on to establish and successfully manage schools in Nigeria, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Observers describe this growing network of educational leaders as evidence of the enduring influence of the values, standards and professional culture cultivated within Mind Builders School.

Beyond academics, the institution has also maintained a strong commitment to social responsibility and community development.

Driven by Mrs. Falore’s belief that quality education should be accessible to all regardless of social status, the school has supported scholarship programmes for indigent students, provided educational opportunities for vulnerable children and contributed to public school development through infrastructure support and community-focused interventions.

Mind Builders School has equally played a significant role in educational advocacy and policy development through Mrs. Falore’s active participation in major professional bodies.

She has held leadership positions in the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), the Association of Private Educators in Nigeria (APEN) and the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), helping to shape conversations around educational reforms and standards in Nigeria.

As preparations intensify for the June 20 symposium, stakeholders say the institution itself remains the most enduring tribute to Mrs. Falore’s legacy.

The event is expected to feature discussions on educational excellence, leadership, innovation and sustainability—principles that have defined both Mrs. Falore’s five-decade career and the growth of Mind Builders School.

It will also provide a platform for educators, policymakers, parents and development partners to examine how visionary leadership can transform educational institutions into drivers of national development and social progress.

After nearly three decades of institutional growth and 50 years of service in the education sector, Mind Builders School continues to stand as a model of excellence, innovation and transformational leadership.

As Nigeria celebrates the milestone achievements of Mrs. Bolajoko Falore at 70 and her golden jubilee in education, many believe the success story of Mind Builders School remains one of the strongest examples of how commitment, consistency and a clear vision can shape generations, nurture leaders and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Bariga Youth Coalition Backs Alli-Balogun, Condemns Anti-Party Campaigns in Somolu II

By Naomi Onome

LAGOS, June 2, 2026 –

The Coalition of Bariga Youth and Progressive Leaders has declared its support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Somolu Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly election, Hon. Morufu Idowu Alli-Balogun, while condemning what it described as divisive campaigns and misinformation aimed at undermining his candidacy.

Speaking at a press conference attended by party members, community stakeholders, youth representatives, and political observers, the coalition maintained that Alli-Balogun's emergence as the party's candidate followed a legitimate and transparent democratic process during the APC primary election held on May 20, 2026.

According to the group, recent attempts by certain political actors to challenge the outcome of the primary and promote alternative narratives amount to anti-party activities capable of threatening the unity and stability of the party ahead of future elections.

The coalition expressed concern over what it called efforts by a few disgruntled individuals to discredit the APC candidate through sponsored misinformation and campaigns designed to create division within the party. It argued that such actions undermine the principles of internal democracy and disregard the collective decision of party members across the constituency.

The youth leaders described Alli-Balogun as a grassroots politician with a strong connection to the people, citing his years of community service, empowerment programmes, and commitment to progressive governance as factors that have earned him widespread support within Somolu Constituency II.

They warned that continued attacks on the APC candidate could weaken the party's electoral prospects, create unnecessary divisions among loyal members, and shift attention away from the broader objective of securing victory for the party.

The coalition also questioned the motives behind ongoing efforts to challenge the outcome of the primary election, insisting that no individual ambition should supersede the collective interest of the party and the democratic choice expressed by members during the exercise.

While reaffirming its loyalty to the APC leadership, the group appealed to party elders, including Hon. Kolade Alabi and Senator Anthony Adefuye, a member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), to intervene in order to preserve unity, discipline, and cohesion within the party.

According to the coalition, the involvement of senior stakeholders is necessary to prevent further tensions and ensure that party members remain focused on strengthening the APC's position and advancing its developmental agenda in Somolu Constituency II.

The group further described Alli-Balogun as a symbol of continuity, competence, and inclusive leadership, noting that his loyalty to the party and longstanding engagement with constituents make him well-positioned to represent the constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Reaffirming its position, the Coalition of Bariga Youth and Progressive Leaders rejected any attempt to overturn the outcome of the APC primary election and pledged continued support for Alli-Balogun's candidacy. The coalition also vowed to mobilise support for him across all wards and communities within the constituency.

The group concluded by urging party members, women groups, youths, community leaders, and supporters to remain united, resist divisive tendencies, and work collectively towards ensuring electoral success for the APC in Somolu Constituency II.

HealthACPN Calls On FG To Strengthen Tobacco Control As Nigeria Records Up To 28,000 T by onochurch(op): 12:47am On Jun 03
ACPN Calls on FG to Strengthen Tobacco Control as Nigeria Records Up to 28,000 Tobacco-Related Deaths Annually

By Primetime Reports

The National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Pharm. Ambrose Igwe Kammah Ezeh, has called on the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt stronger and more decisive tobacco control measures, including policies that could eliminate nicotine from tobacco products or impose an outright ban on tobacco, warning that Nigeria can no longer afford the enormous health and economic burden associated with tobacco use.

Ezeh made the call during a press briefing to commemorate the 2026 World No Tobacco Day, observed globally on May 31, where he described tobacco as one of the deadliest consumer products ever created and a major contributor to preventable deaths worldwide.

According to him, the annual observance serves as a critical reminder to governments, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations and citizens of the urgent need to intensify efforts aimed at combating the tobacco epidemic and protecting populations from its devastating consequences.

“Tobacco remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It kills up to half of its long-term users and is responsible for more than eight million deaths globally every year, including approximately 1.3 million non-smokers who die from exposure to second-hand smoke,” he stated.

The ACPN Chairman revealed that tobacco-related illnesses account for between 26,000 and 28,000 deaths annually in Nigeria, creating a significant public health challenge and placing immense pressure on the country's healthcare system and economic productivity.

He expressed concern over the growing prevalence of tobacco and nicotine use among young people, noting that an estimated 40 million children aged between 13 and 15 years across the world currently use at least one tobacco product.

Ezeh accused tobacco manufacturers of deliberately targeting young people through attractive flavours, deceptive packaging, aggressive branding and sophisticated marketing campaigns designed to lure them into nicotine addiction.

“The tobacco industry continues to target young people through carefully crafted campaigns designed to make harmful products appear attractive and harmless. This is creating a new generation of nicotine-dependent individuals,” he warned.

He further raised alarm over the increasing promotion of e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery systems, which he said are often marketed as safer alternatives but ultimately sustain nicotine dependence while recruiting new users into a cycle of addiction.

Speaking on the theme of this year's commemoration, "Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,"* Ezeh described it as both timely and relevant, saying it exposes the tactics employed by tobacco companies while drawing global attention to the urgent need to confront nicotine addiction at its root.

He noted that nicotine remains the primary psychoactive substance responsible for tobacco dependence and argued that despite Nigeria's existing tobacco control laws and regulatory frameworks, weak enforcement has continued to undermine their effectiveness.

“The continued prevalence of tobacco consumption demonstrates that our current interventions have not delivered the desired outcomes. Government complacency in addressing this epidemic only benefits the tobacco industry while thousands of Nigerians continue to lose their lives annually,” he said.

The ACPN leader therefore urged policymakers to pursue more far-reaching scientific and regulatory measures capable of significantly reducing the addictive potential of tobacco products. He also advocated stronger legislative restrictions on tobacco availability and consumption, stressing that bold policy actions are necessary to reverse the growing public health threat posed by tobacco use.

“A strong policy that eliminates nicotine from tobacco products or an outright ban on tobacco will permanently address many of these avoidable health hazards,” he declared.

Ezeh emphasized that tobacco offers no proven therapeutic or medicinal benefit to the human body and remains directly linked to a wide range of life-threatening illnesses, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders and several chronic health conditions.

Beyond its devastating health impact, he described tobacco as a major economic burden, disclosing that smoking-attributable diseases cost Nigeria an estimated ₦634 billion annually through healthcare expenditures and productivity losses.

“This is a burden that Nigeria can no longer sustain. Every year, families are devastated, healthcare systems are stretched and economic productivity is undermined because of diseases caused by tobacco use,” he noted.

On behalf of the leadership and members of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, Ezeh called on the Federal Government to strengthen tobacco control policies, intensify enforcement of existing laws and implement bold reforms that will safeguard present and future generations from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine addiction.

“As we commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2026, we must recommit ourselves to protecting public health, reducing preventable deaths and building a healthier, tobacco-free Nigeria,” he said.

He also extended his goodwill and support to Nigerians battling tobacco-related illnesses, while encouraging families and caregivers caring for affected persons. He expressed optimism that with stronger political will, effective enforcement and sustained public awareness, Nigeria can significantly reduce tobacco consumption and its devastating consequences on public health.

The ACPN Chairman concluded by urging all stakeholders to unite in the fight against tobacco addiction and work collectively towards securing a healthier and tobacco-free future for all Nigerians.

HealthWASPEN Raises Alarm Over Hidden Burden Of Hospital Malnutrition, Announces 5th C by onochurch(op): 2:31pm On Jun 01
WASPEN Raises Alarm Over Hidden Burden of Hospital Malnutrition, Announces 5th Clinical Nutrition Conference in Asaba

By Naomi Onome

The West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) has raised fresh concerns over the growing burden of hospital malnutrition in Nigeria, describing it as a silent but deadly healthcare challenge that continues to undermine patient recovery and increase healthcare costs across the country.

The warning came as the society officially announced its 5th Annual Clinical Nutrition Conference, scheduled to hold from June 22 to 25, 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking during a virtual press conference, the founder and president of WASPEN, Dr Teresa Isichei Pounds, said malnutrition remains one of the most under-recognised threats to patient safety and recovery within healthcare institutions.

According to her, hospital malnutrition affects patients across all age groups, including premature newborns; critically ill children; adults suffering from chronic diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and cancer; as well as surgical patients.

She noted that studies have shown that hospital malnutrition contributes to prolonged hospital stays, increased infections, delayed wound healing, higher treatment costs, increased readmission rates and mortality.

"Hospital malnutrition is a hidden burden. It exists across our healthcare institutions, but many patients are not routinely screened for nutritional deficiencies. As a result, many suffer avoidable complications that worsen their conditions and increase the cost of care," she said.

Dr Pounds revealed that available data indicate that between 30 and 45 per cent of patients admitted into tertiary hospitals in Nigeria are malnourished at the point of admission, while the figure rises significantly among elderly patients. She stressed that inadequate nutrition screening and the absence of multidisciplinary nutrition support teams in many hospitals remain major obstacles to effective management.

Five Years of Advocacy and Growth

Reflecting on the journey of the organisation, Dr Pounds explained that WASPEN was established in 2019 with the vision of transforming clinical nutrition care across West Africa through education, advocacy, research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

She said the society has evolved into a regional movement bringing together physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, researchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders to improve patient outcomes through better nutrition care.

Among the achievements recorded by the organisation over the past five years are the successful hosting of four consecutive annual clinical nutrition conferences, the establishment of multidisciplinary nutrition support steering committees in major healthcare institutions, and the promotion of Malnutrition Awareness Week in partnership with the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).

According to her, institutions that have established nutrition support committees include the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, National Hospital Abuja, Army Command and NAOWA Hospital Abuja, and Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital.

She disclosed that the committees are already improving nutrition screening, early intervention and collaborative patient care within their respective institutions.

Conference to Focus on Neonatal and Paediatric Nutrition

The 2026 conference is themed "Sustainable Clinical Nutrition Services: Ensuring Access, Safety and Collaboration".

Dr Pounds explained that the theme reflects the need to ensure that patients requiring nutritional support have access to quality care regardless of their economic status or location, while promoting evidence-based practice and stronger collaboration among healthcare professionals.

She said special attention would be devoted to neonatal and paediatric nutrition, given the vulnerability of newborns and children whose survival and development depend heavily on appropriate nutritional support.

The conference will feature international experts, scientific presentations, policy discussions, hands-on workshops, community outreach programmes and networking sessions.

"We expect more than 300 participants from Nigeria and beyond, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers and international collaborators," she said.

She further announced that WASPEN has expanded its reach beyond Nigeria with the establishment of a chapter in Ghana, a move aimed at strengthening clinical nutrition advocacy across West Africa.

FMC Asaba Ready to Host

The Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Dr Omo Ekeneam, expressed delight that the institution was selected to host the landmark conference.

He assured stakeholders that the hospital was fully prepared to receive delegates and facilitate a successful event.

According to him, although specialists within the hospital have traditionally handled nutrition-related issues at departmental levels, the conference would help institutionalise a broader hospital-wide approach to addressing malnutrition.

"We are excited to host this conference because of the immense benefits it will bring to our institution and the healthcare system. Preparations are already ongoing, and we are engaging the Delta State Government to ensure a successful event," he stated.

Nutrition Must Become Core Clinical Service

Also speaking, Chairman of the 2026 WASPEN Clinical Nutrition Conference, Pharm. (Chief) Paul Osogbe Enebeli, emphasised that clinical nutrition should no longer be regarded as an optional support service but as a critical component of healthcare delivery.

He noted that malnutrition continues to worsen patient outcomes, prolong hospitalisation and increase financial pressure on both families and healthcare institutions.

"Many of these outcomes are preventable through timely nutrition screening, early intervention and coordinated multidisciplinary care. Clinical nutrition must therefore be recognised as an essential clinical service," he said.

Enebeli highlighted the growing collaboration between WASPEN and key local and international organisations, including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, ASPEN, ISPEN and several professional associations, all aimed at strengthening capacity-building and evidence-based nutrition practice.

Call for Greater Government Commitment

Responding to questions from journalists, Dr Pounds urged the federal government to accord hospital malnutrition the same level of attention currently given to community-based malnutrition interventions.

She stressed the need for greater investment in nutrition screening programmes, specialised nutrition products and multidisciplinary support systems within healthcare facilities.

According to her, many patients who require advanced nutrition therapies, such as parenteral nutrition, are often unable to access treatment because of financial constraints and limited availability of resources.

"The government needs to recognise that hospital malnutrition has both clinical and economic consequences. We need the resources to identify these patients early and provide the necessary interventions that can save lives and reduce healthcare costs," she said.

Stakeholders Rally Support

Participants at the press conference, including members of the WASPEN Board of Trustees, healthcare professionals and academics, commended the initiative and pledged their support toward tackling hospital malnutrition.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Ekaneam Ono, assured prospective participants of adequate preparations, including logistics, accommodation and security arrangements.

He noted that Asaba's strategic location makes it accessible to participants from the South-South, South-East and South-West regions of Nigeria.

The conference is expected to attract healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, students, industry leaders and development partners from across Nigeria and other parts of the world.

Organisers expressed optimism that deliberations at the conference would generate practical recommendations capable of strengthening nutrition care systems, improving patient outcomes and influencing policy reforms in Nigeria and across West Africa.

High-Profile Guests Expected to Attend WASPEN Conference.

The 5th Annual WASPEN Clinical Nutrition Conference is expected to attract an array of distinguished government officials, healthcare leaders, traditional rulers, researchers, and international experts from across the globe.

Among the dignitaries expected at the event are the Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, who will serve as the special guest of honour; and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, who is also billed to attend as a special guest of honour.

The Royal Father of the Day will be His Royal Majesty, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, the Asagba of Asaba, whose presence is expected to underscore the importance of community engagement in advancing healthcare and nutrition initiatives.

The conference will be chaired by Pharm. (Chief) DSC Paul Osogbe Enebeli, FPSN, FPC Pharm, FNA Pharm, Chairman of the WASPEN 2026 Clinical Nutrition Conference.

Delivering the keynote address will be Mrs Ladi Bako Aiyegbusi, mni, former director of nutrition at the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, who is expected to provide critical insights into nutrition policy and healthcare development in Nigeria.

The conference will also feature presentations from renowned international experts, including Dr Zandratetta Tim Cook, MD, MPH, AAHIVS, Founder of Heather Ivy Society Inc. and Medical Director of Faebris Medical, United States; Dr Mario Ferreyra, MD, PhD, Consultant Surgeon from Lima, Peru; and Dr Leo C. Egunjobi, MD, FACC, FSCAI, an international cardiologist based in Beloit, Wisconsin, USA, who is also a WASPEN Patron and member of the organisation's board.

Other prominent attendees include the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme; the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Dr Omo Ekaneam, who serves as chief host of the conference; and Dr Teresa Isichei Pounds, Founder and President of WASPEN, who is the chief host and driving force behind the organisation's campaign to combat hospital malnutrition across West Africa.

The gathering of such high-profile local and international stakeholders reflects the growing recognition of clinical nutrition as a critical component of healthcare delivery and patient recovery across the region.

NTA 2 Lagos Celebrates Children’s Day with Visit to Heart of Gold Children’s Hospice

By Primetime Reports

As part of activities marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, the management and staff of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) 2 Lagos paid a humanitarian visit to Heart of Gold Children’s Hospice, an orphanage and special care home in Surulere, Lagos, where they donated food items, household materials and other relief supplies to children living with disabilities and special needs.

The visit, led by the Zonal Director of NTA 2 Lagos, Dr. Evelyn Nwosu, was aimed at showing love and solidarity with vulnerable children who are often excluded from mainstream Children’s Day celebrations held annually on May 27 across the world.

Speaking during the outreach, Dr. Nwosu explained that the station deliberately chose to celebrate children who are rarely remembered during festive occasions.

“You know that May 27 worldwide is Children’s Day and usually we have activities to celebrate children. But for us this year, we chose to celebrate those children who cannot come out to dance or participate in debates and other activities. We came to identify with children whom society often overlooks,” she said.

The NTA boss expressed deep emotions after interacting with some of the children at the hospice, especially a 13-year-old child living with severe disability. According to her, the experience served as a reminder that life itself is a blessing and that society should not forget children living with disabilities and special needs.

“For everybody, Children’s Day should not just be about celebrations and merriment. It should also be an opportunity to reach out to children who may not even know that it is Children’s Day because of their condition and circumstances,” she added.

Dr. Nwosu acknowledged government efforts towards caring for persons living with disabilities but noted that much more still needs to be done. She observed that many of the children at the hospice require better facilities and improved welfare support.

“I know government has done something over the years, but they are not doing enough. When we entered some of the rooms, you could see that the beds are barely enough and some of the children who deserve greater comfort are not as comfortable as they should be,” she stated.

She also used the opportunity to encourage parents not to abandon children born with disabilities, sharing a personal story about her elder brother who survived polio as a child and later became a successful chartered accountant and family man.

“If my parents had abandoned him because he could not walk at the age of two, perhaps we would never have known what he would become today. Parents should nurture these children because nobody truly knows the future they hold,” she said.

Founder of the hospice, Mrs. Laja Adedoyin, disclosed that the facility was established on October 2, 2003, to cater for abandoned and vulnerable children living with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, congenital abnormalities, mental disabilities and other special conditions.

According to her, the home has continued to survive for over two decades despite numerous financial and medical challenges associated with caring for children with special needs.

“The greatest challenges are usually medical because many times you do not even know the exact condition of the child until medical examinations are carried out,” she explained.

Mrs. Adedoyin commended NTA for maintaining a long-standing relationship with the hospice, noting that the station has consistently supported the home over the years through periodic donations and advocacy.

“NTA called me like they always do yearly to inform me they would be coming. We have had a relationship with them since we started and they have been supportive,” she said.

She further explained that children are only admitted into the hospice through legal procedures involving the police, the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and the courts to prevent issues related to child trafficking and illegal adoption.

“For a child to come into this home, the child must be covered by papers from the police, the ministry and the court. Every child here is protected by the law,” she emphasized.

Speaking on the welfare of the children, the founder said the hospice ensures they are properly fed, educated and protected from abuse or neglect. She noted that despite economic hardship, the children are given adequate meals, medical care and educational opportunities.

She also highlighted the emotional and psychological challenges faced by children growing into adulthood while trying to understand their backgrounds and identities.

“The society is not always welcoming to children like this, but we try to encourage them and make them understand that their future still matters. Education remains very important for them,” she added.

The visit formed part of NTA 2 Lagos’ week-long Children’s Day activities, which traditionally include debates, cultural displays and entertainment programmes for children. However, the station said this year’s celebration was intentionally redirected towards children living with disabilities and those requiring special care.

The outreach ended with prayers, interaction with the children, and presentation of gift items to support the continued operation of the hospice.

Police Urged to Deepen Probe as Alleged Rivers Land Grabber Resumes Sale of Disputed Victoria Creek Gardens Property

By Naomi Onome

Fresh concerns have emerged over the continued advertisement and alleged sale of disputed land within Victoria Creek Gardens (VCG) in Rivers State, despite an ongoing police investigation into allegations of forceful takeover, demolition of properties, intimidation of occupants, and land racketeering linked to businessman, Mr. Micheal Amadi-Orwu.

The controversy follows an earlier report that police authorities detained Amadi-Orwu over the alleged demolition of properties valued at over N1 billion in Port Harcourt before he was later granted bail pending further investigation.

However, complainants and affected property owners have now raised alarm that while investigations are still ongoing, promotional materials and social media advertisements linked to Victoria Creek Gardens continue to circulate online, allegedly inviting unsuspecting members of the public to purchase plots within the disputed estate.

A recent Instagram post by the handle “victoriacreekgardens” announced the estate’s participation at the Obakor Ikwerre International Convention in Houston, Texas, where the organisation reportedly showcased investment opportunities and luxury real estate projects connected to the estate.

The post read in part: “Victoria Creek Gardens is proud to announce our presence at the Obakor Ikwerre International Convention in Houston, Texas... committed to creating premium communities, lasting value, and investment opportunities back home in Nigeria.”

The development has triggered renewed outrage among some alleged original landowners and occupants of the estate, who insist that the land remains under active investigation by law enforcement agencies and should not be sold or advertised pending the conclusion of the case.

One of the affected property owners, identified as Hon. Dr. Chris, accused Amadi-Orwu of masterminding the destruction and takeover of his property situated on over 10,000 square metres of land along the new Port Harcourt Airport Road axis in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

According to him, the suspect allegedly encroached on properties surrounding Victoria Creek Gardens Estate, demolishing structures including a bungalow, perimeter fencing, gatehouse, and security installations before allegedly clearing the entire portion of land for a resale.

Hon. Dr. Chris alleged that the dispute began around 2021 when he reportedly came under pressure to sell the property. He claimed the suspect repeatedly threatened him with consequences if he refused to relinquish ownership.

He further alleged that attempts to rebuild damaged structures over the years were met with repeated demolition activities, which he initially believed were environmental incidents before later discovering what he described as deliberate human interference.

The matter reportedly escalated in 2025 after the structures on the property were allegedly completely dismantled, prompting petitions and formal complaints to law enforcement authorities.

According to the complainants, the case was first reported to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, whose intervention temporarily halted activities on the property. However, they alleged that the suspect repeatedly returned to the site after each police intervention to continue activities on the land.

The complainants also expressed fears that the suspect acted with a sense of impunity, alleging that he openly boasted about having influence within security agencies and the judiciary in Rivers State.

They alleged that Amadi-Orwu made disturbing claims that he had powerful connections within the police and judiciary, insisting that no meaningful action would be taken against him regardless of where the matter was reported.

According to the allegations, he reportedly claimed to have judges “on his payroll” and warned affected occupants to abandon the property or risk violent consequences.

The complainants further alleged that the suspect claimed to enjoy police protection and maintained links with armed groups and local thugs operating around the area, statements they said created fear among residents and discouraged some victims from pursuing legal action.

Meanwhile, recent developments suggest renewed police attention on the matter following fresh directives from the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit.

Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that Amadi-Orwu was recently re-arrested and detained as investigators intensify efforts to conclude investigations and commence possible prosecution.

The alleged offences under investigation reportedly include threats to life, criminal trespass, malicious damage, vandalisation, demolition of buildings, removal of government survey beacons, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, forgery of land documents, and alleged involvement in organised land racketeering.

Affected property owners have also warned members of the public and prospective investors to avoid purchasing plots within the disputed Victoria Creek Gardens property until investigations are concluded.

According to them, the land remains subject to ownership disputes and multiple legal claims, warning that unsuspecting buyers may become entangled in prolonged litigation and possible financial losses.

The complainants further alleged that some occupants of the estate were intimidated and coerced into accepting inadequate compensation after being forcefully evicted from portions of the land.

They also dismissed claims allegedly made by the suspect that influential government interests were behind the takeover of the property, describing such assertions as tactics aimed at frightening genuine landowners into surrendering their properties.

The case has once again drawn public attention to the growing problem of land grabbing, forced evictions, and violent property disputes in rapidly developing parts of Rivers State, particularly along the Airport Road corridor where rising real estate values have intensified ownership conflicts.

As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest developments. However, sources close to the investigation indicated that a renewed police action may signal a tougher stance against land racketeering and related property crimes in the state.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation is likely to serve as a major test of law enforcement’s commitment to tackling organised land disputes, protecting property rights, and restoring public confidence in the justice system.

Stakeholders Advocate Responsible Fatherhood at Launch of 'Dingi Omo' in Lagos
...commends Oluwatoyin Mathnuel's initiative as author of 'Dingi Omo'.

By Naomi Onome

Stakeholders from the media, academia, religious community and public sector on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, converged at the NERDC Hall, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, for the official launch of 'Dingi Omo', a book authored by Mrs Oluwatoyin Mathnuel, Editor-in-Chief of Insight Global News.

The book, which centres on fatherhood, leadership, family values and responsible parenting, sparked extensive discussions on the importance of fathers in shaping the moral foundation of children and society.

Speakers at the launch described 'Dingi Omo' as a timely and thought-provoking contribution to ongoing conversations on parenting, leadership and societal development.

They stressed that responsible fatherhood goes beyond biological connection and must be rooted in sacrifice, emotional support, discipline, moral guidance and active involvement in the upbringing of children.

According to reviewers of the book 'Dingi Omo', the growing rate of social vices, indiscipline and moral decline among young people can largely be linked to the absence of responsible father figures and the erosion of family values in society.

In his remarks, Professor Olusesan Oniyide described Dingi Omo as “one of the most profound books” he had encountered in recent times, noting that fatherhood reflects leadership and that children are often reflections of their fathers. He praised the author for changing societal narratives that overly celebrate motherhood while neglecting the sacrifices and impact of fathers.

Prince Adelekan Adegbenro urged young people and students to read the book, saying it contains lessons capable of positively influencing society. He emphasised that true fatherhood is defined by responsibility and active involvement in children’s upbringing rather than mere biological connection.

Also speaking, Mrs Jumoke Johnson described fathers as the “silent backbone” of many homes and called for greater recognition of responsible fatherhood. She urged fathers to build stronger emotional bonds with their children despite work and financial pressures, adding that men who fail to shoulder their responsibilities should not be regarded as true fathers.

Mrs Ojelabi, who represented Prophet Ayodele, shared emotional personal experiences as a single mother who raised her children through hardship, stressing the importance of sacrifice, education and parental commitment. She noted that many women now play dual roles as both father and mother in raising children.

Representing LASTMA General Manager Mr Bakare Oki, Professor Kolawole highlighted the agency’s role in societal development and drew parallels between the concept of Dingi Omo and responsible public service. He said LASTMA has become a model traffic management agency in Nigeria and across West Africa through discipline, resilience and service delivery.

The event drew prominent personalities from different sectors, including Professor Olusesan Oniyide, who represented the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries; Professor Kolawole, Director of Logistics and Transportation, representing the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Bakare Oki; Mrs Ojelabi, representing Prophet Ayodele; Prince Adelekan Adegbenro, Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication and Station Manager of Mainland FM; as well as the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs Jumoke Johnson.

Guests at the gathering commended the author for bringing attention to the often-overlooked sacrifices and responsibilities of fathers in nation-building and family development.

The event also featured goodwill messages from family members, journalists and guests, who commended Mrs Mathnuel for using literature to promote responsible parenting and positive societal values.

Tears, Deception and Survival: How Three Plateau Women Were Lured to Mali for S*x Work

…As GAHTO Raises Alarm Over Passport Seizure, Labour Exploitation in Egypt

By Naomi Onome

Three young women from Plateau State have recounted how they were allegedly deceived and trafficked to Mali under the false promise of securing legitimate jobs in Lagos, only to end up trapped in prostitution and subjected to abuse.

The victims — 35-year-old Becky Ibrahim, 24-year-old Blessing Nanging and 23-year-old Miracle Yakubu — shared their experiences after they were rescued and returned to Nigeria by the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization (GAHTO).

Speaking during an interview facilitated by journalists in Lagos, the women said poverty, unemployment and the desire to support their families pushed them into accepting what they believed were genuine job offers.

Becky Ibrahim, a mother of three, explained that she was approached in Jos by a man who promised to connect her with jobs in Lagos. Struggling financially after the death of her husband, she agreed to travel in hopes of providing for her children and paying school fees.

According to her, the journey unexpectedly extended beyond Lagos to Cotonou and eventually Mali, where she discovered they had been trafficked. Becky alleged that upon arrival, they were forced into prostitution and beaten whenever they resisted.

Another victim, Blessing Nanging, said she left Plateau State after being promised employment in Lagos because she could no longer provide food for her two children. She said the traffickers later informed them they were travelling to Cotonou, but the journey continued until they reached Mali.

Blessing disclosed that they were eventually told the “job” was prostitution and not the shop work they had earlier been promised. She alleged that refusal to cooperate often resulted in punishment and intimidation.

Miracle Yakubu, 23, narrated how she allegedly suffered severe abuse after attempting to escape from the traffickers. According to her, she was attacked, stabbed with a bottle and beaten after she and another victim planned to flee.

The victims said they were unaware of the true nature of the trip before leaving Plateau State and warned other young Nigerians against falling for fake overseas job offers.

“Stay in your place and look for something to do. Don’t follow people because they promise you work abroad,” Becky advised.

The rescued victims were received in Lagos by GAHTO and handed over to Naomi Badu, financial secretary of the BIROM Association community in Lagos.

According to Badu, the BIROM Association was alerted after the victims were brought back from Mali to Nigeria. She explained that the group immediately mobilised to receive them and arrange their safe return to Plateau State.

“We always respond whenever our people are in distress — whether sick, stranded or trafficked. We make sure they are safely transported home and reunited with their families,” she said.

Human rights advocate and journalist Mrs Jumai Madaki commented on the increasing rate of human trafficking and labour exploitation involving young Nigerian girls, especially from Plateau State. She said many victims are deceived with fake job offers and trafficked to countries like Mali and Ghana, where they are forced into prostitution and subjected to severe abuse. According to her, poverty, insecurity, family breakdown, and discrimination against girls have made many young women vulnerable to traffickers.

Madaki explained that ignorance and economic hardship have pushed some families into supporting illegal migration, believing prostitution abroad is similar to local commercial sex work. She revealed that some trafficked girls are forced to sleep with dozens of men daily, while others are assaulted for refusing prostitution. She also warned that some former victims who return home wealthy now recruit other girls into trafficking networks.

She called for stronger community involvement, including the creation of community by-laws to hold traffickers and irresponsible parents accountable. The advocate also criticised Nigeria’s anti-trafficking laws as too weak and urged the government to strengthen penalties and provide more funding and operational support for the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which she said currently lacks adequate facilities to effectively fight trafficking.

Meanwhile, the President of the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization (GAHTO), Comrade Prosper, also raised alarm over increasing cases of labour exploitation involving Nigerians trafficked to Egypt.

According to him, several traffickers and sponsors allegedly confiscate the international passports of victims upon arrival and force them into exploitative labour conditions for between 18 to 24 months.

“We will forward the names of those involved to the necessary security agencies so they can be placed on watchlists and arrested,” he stated.

He further disclosed that members of the Yoruba community have repeatedly complained about sponsors and agents who seize the passports of trafficked Nigerians and subject them to harsh conditions in Egypt.

The anti-human trafficking advocate called on the Nigerian government, security agencies and international organisations to intensify efforts against trafficking and labour exploitation networks operating across Africa and the Middle East.

The latest incident has once again exposed the growing activities of human trafficking syndicates targeting vulnerable young Nigerians with fake promises of jobs in cities and abroad.

Lagos Task Force Labels Ogun Monarch Oba Kazeem Salami a “Land Grabber” in Official Petition Response

By Naomisophyblog

Fresh controversy has trailed the Osobia of Ijebu Makun-Omi in Ogun State, Oba Kazeem Adeshina Salami, popularly known as “All Rounder,” after the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers officially described him and his associates as illegal occupiers in a dispute over a parcel of land in Eti-Osa area of Lagos State.

The development was revealed in official correspondences issued by the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers to the Lagos State Police Command over allegations surrounding the forceful occupation of land situated along the Lagos-Epe Expressway in Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

The disputed property is reportedly the same parcel of land linked to earlier allegations that Oba Salami mobilized armed men to attack a property consultant, Mr. Stanley Oripelaye, and his security guard, Afolabi Yisau, also known as “Ijoba.” The victims had alleged that they were assaulted, robbed and seriously injured during the attack. Although the monarch denied the allegations, the matter is said to be under investigation by the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit at Kam Salem House, Obalende, Lagos.

According to documents obtained by journalists, the Lagos State Task Force on Land Grabbers, in a letter dated March 12, 2020, with reference number LSSTF/LG/2019/3772, informed the Commissioner of Police that it had received a formal petition from Dr. Ken A. Uwaifo, counsel to Cosmopolitan Properties Limited.

The petition accused Oba Kazeem Salami and his cohorts of unlawful encroachment and illegal occupation of a 4.872-hectare parcel of land located at Ajilwe/Alasia Village in Eti-Osa.

In its findings, the task force stated that the petitioner’s ownership claim originated from a High Court of Lagos State auction sale conducted pursuant to an order of court delivered by late Hon. Justice Ligali Ayorinde. The agency referenced a Certificate of Purchase dated November 30, 1993, as well as a verification report issued by the Office of the Surveyor-General of Lagos State, which allegedly confirmed that the land in dispute fell within the area sold through the court-ordered auction.

The agency further noted that the Lagos State Government had previously acquired the land and compensated the customary landowners, thereby strengthening the petitioner’s claim to lawful ownership and possession.

The letter expressly stated that it was “evident that the Petitioner is the person entitled to the said land,” adding that the continued occupation and obstruction allegedly carried out by the respondents amounted to a violation of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016.

The task force therefore requested police intervention to ensure that the petitioner enjoyed peaceful possession of the property.

According to the agency, the actions of the respondents contravened Section 4 of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016, which prohibits forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed property. It also invoked Section 12 of the law, requesting the police to arrest and prosecute any individuals found to be trespassing or unlawfully occupying the land.

In a follow-up communication dated May 20, 2020, the task force reaffirmed its earlier position and disclosed that the Nigerian Police had previously investigated the matter and filed charges against Alhaji Kazeem Salami and others.

The agency stated that the defendants were accused of illegally occupying the land and forcefully driving away the lawful occupier’s workers and servants, contrary to the provisions of Section 4 of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016.

The task force also referenced an ongoing court case marked Suit No. LD/4383LMW/2017 between Alhaji Tajudeen Falana and others versus the Governor of Lagos State and others, currently pending before the Lagos State High Court.

According to the task force, its review of court filings, particularly the Statement of Defence, indicated that Cosmopolitan Properties Limited had remained in possession of the land since the court-supervised auction sale.

However, lawyers representing Oba Salami, Lawal Pedro SAN & Associates, challenged the position of the task force, arguing that the agency had already prejudged the dispute despite the matter being before a competent court.

The legal team insisted that only the judiciary possesses the constitutional authority to determine issues relating to ownership and possession of land, especially while litigation remains pending.

Despite the objections raised by the monarch’s lawyers, the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers maintained that its actions were lawful and within its statutory mandate under the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016.

The agency explained that its primary responsibility is to prevent forceful entry, violent takeover and illegal occupation of landed property across Lagos State. It further disclosed that its request for police intervention was made pursuant to directives from the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers operates under the Office of the Attorney General at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

Authorities noted that the dispute remains subject to ongoing judicial proceedings in Suit No. LD/4383LMW/2017 before the Lagos High Court.

NBA Under Fire as Activist Demands Urgent Judicial Reforms

...Says Judiciary Has Become Puppet of Politicians

By Naomi Onome

A public affairs commentator and activist, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, has raised serious concerns over what he described as the growing collapse of integrity within Nigeria’s judicial system, alleging that corruption and political interference have weakened the once-respected institution.

Iche made the above statement following a viral video where a security guard allegedly assaulted a lawyer at the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 18, 2026.

Reacting to the incident, Omoyele Sowore, who shared the video, wrote:
“The Federal High Court has now been reduced to a centre for the dehumanisation of lawyers and litigants. Today, court security personnel physically assaulted one of my lawyers simply for insisting that we be allowed into the court premises to attend to our cases. Nigeria is finished!”

Speaking passionately on the state of the nation’s legal profession and judiciary, Iche lamented that the judiciary, which ought to serve as an independent arm of government and a check on executive excesses, has allegedly become compromised by politicians and the affluent in society through inducements and undue influence, giving rise to occasional degradation.

According to him, in the past, judges and legal practitioners commanded immense respect because they stood firmly for justice and fairness, irrespective of political pressure. He, however, alleged that the system has changed drastically, with some judicial officers now allegedly receiving gifts such as luxury vehicles, houses, mansions and monetary inducements from politicians in exchange for favourable judgements.

“Before now, the judiciary was the hope of the common man. It was the institution that cautioned the executive whenever things were going wrong. But today, politicians have corrupted the judiciary. They buy SUVs for judges, build houses for them and give them fat envelopes. The judiciary has now become a puppet in the hands of the executive,” he stated.

Iche further decried what he described as the declining respect for lawyers and judges in society, citing a recent incident in court where a security operative allegedly assaulted a lawyer dressed in his official legal attire.

He compared the incident to a civilian attacking a military officer in uniform, insisting that such an act would have been unthinkable in previous years when the legal profession commanded greater dignity and protection.

The activist also condemned situations where security agencies allegedly disregard court orders, particularly cases where suspects granted bail are reportedly re-arrested within court premises despite judicial pronouncements.

“This is not how it used to be. We are not under military rule; we are under democracy, where the judiciary ought to be respected. But today, nobody values the legal profession anymore because it has been commercialised," he said.

He expressed concern that many Nigerians no longer encourage their children to study law due to what he termed the diminishing credibility of the profession.

“Before, if someone said their child was a lawyer, people respected it. But now, because of corruption and commercialisation, nobody takes them seriously anymore,” he added.

Iche also criticised inconsistencies in judicial decisions across different jurisdictions, alleging that some judges now allegedly take directives from politicians before delivering judgements.

According to him, the situation has eroded public confidence in the judiciary and deepened perceptions of injustice within the country.

He questioned the role of the Nigerian Bar Association in sanitising the legal profession and restoring public trust in the justice system.

“The president of the Nigerian Bar Association must rise to the occasion. The ball is now in their court. If they cannot sanitise the profession, then they should step aside for those who can,” he declared.

Referencing respected legal icons of the past, including late human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi and former jurist Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Iche lamented what he described as the disappearance of fearless judicial officers who once stood firmly against injustice and political oppression.

“Where are the judges and lawyers who could not sit quietly while irregularities happened? Where are people like Gani Fawehinmi and Justice Oputa?” he queried.

The activist also accused the judiciary of applying double standards in the handling of corruption-related cases, alleging that politicians accused of embezzlement often escape justice while internet fraud suspects and ordinary citizens face harsh punishments.

He alleged that anti-corruption cases involving politically exposed persons are frequently stalled or dismissed, while less influential offenders receive severe prison sentences.

He further criticised what he described as the growing relationship between political office holders and judicial officers, questioning how judges can remain impartial when allegedly benefiting from politicians.

“How do you expect judges to fairly judge the same politicians who build houses for them and feed them?” he asked.

He warned that continued compromise of the judiciary could have dangerous consequences for Nigeria’s democracy and international image, stressing that the world is closely watching developments in the country.

Calling for urgent reforms, Iche urged judges, lawyers and political leaders to reflect on their actions and uphold justice, fairness and accountability.

“Whatever a man sows, that is what he will reap. If they do not reap it themselves, their children and generations after them will. Nigeria has some of the best lawyers and judges, but corruption has destroyed the system,” he said.

He concluded by appealing to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and honourable members of the judiciary and legal profession to restore the dignity of the institution and protect the sanctity of justice in Nigeria.

Ogun Monarch Allegedly Defies Police Probe as Fresh Violence Erupts Over Eti-Osa Land Dispute

By Naomi Onome

The Osobia of Ijebu Makun-Omi in Ogun State, Oba Kazeem Adeshina Salami, popularly known as “All Rounder", has again been accused of orchestrating violent attacks linked to an ongoing land dispute in the Eti-Osa area of Lagos State despite petitions already submitted to the office of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu. It is said that Oba Kazeem snubbed the IGP's probe and continued with his vehement attack on the victim.

Fresh allegations emerged over the weekend after armed men reportedly stormed a disputed property in Sangotedo, allegedly in search of a property consultant, Mr Stanley Oripelaye. When the assailants could not locate him, they allegedly attacked the estate’s security guard, Afolabi Yisau, also known as "Ijoba", inflicting serious injuries before fleeing the scene.

The injured guard is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Speaking from his hospital bed, the victim alleged that the attackers were led by Chief Abdulsalam Sulaimon, the Baale of Basorun Sangotedo, who he claimed is affiliated with a land-grabbing syndicate allegedly operating under Oba Salami.

Sources familiar with the matter claimed the latest attack may be connected to petitions earlier filed before the Inspector General of Police accusing Oba Salami and several associates of repeated acts of intimidation, assault, destruction of property and threats to life over disputed land located at Sections 13, 28, 43, 58 and 73, Zone 31, Alasia/Ajiwe in Eti-Osa.

In a petition dated October 14, 2025, and written by Kayode Sofola & Associates on behalf of Cosmopolitan Properties Ltd, the company accused five suspects identified as Idowu Hassan; Saheed Abiodun; Abidoye Opeyemi; Segun, popularly called "Obasanjo"; and one Alujo of repeatedly invading its property and attacking security personnel, allegedly on the instruction of Oba Salami.

According to the petition, the first reported incident occurred in June 2025 when the suspects allegedly assaulted the company’s security guard, Afolabi Yisau. Although the matter was reported at Ogombo Police Station, the company alleged that no meaningful action was taken.

The company further alleged that the same group returned in July 2025, physically assaulting the guard again and threatening to kill him if he failed to vacate the property. Another complaint was reportedly lodged at the police station without any arrests or prosecution.

Cosmopolitan Properties also alleged that towards the end of July 2025, the suspects blocked the entrance to the property with a Toyota Sienna vehicle allegedly belonging to Idowu Hassan before attacking the guard and damaging parts of the building. The petition claimed that police officers later recovered illicit substances from the vehicle after arresting the suspects, but they were allegedly released without charges.

The petition further stated that harassment and intimidation continued through August and September 2025. One of the most serious incidents allegedly occurred on September 18, 2025, when property consultant Stanley Oripelaye narrowly escaped after being attacked by armed men wielding cutlasses and daggers on the disputed property.

After failing to locate Oripelaye and the estate guard, the attackers allegedly vandalised sections of the building, including parts of the roof. Photographs of the destruction were reportedly submitted to Ogombo Police Station alongside a formal complaint.

In a follow-up “Save Our Soul” letter dated January 29, 2026, Oripelaye appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police, claiming that earlier petitions had not resulted in a thorough investigation while threats and intimidation continued unabated.

The letter urged the IGP to direct CSP Mohammed Abdulkareem of the IGP Monitoring Unit to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

The petition also referenced a N350 million lawsuit allegedly filed by Oba Salami against the IGP, Stanley Oripelaye, and others over claims of rights violations, which the monarch reportedly lost on December 4, 2025.

Cosmopolitan Properties is now calling for urgent intervention by the police authorities to protect its workers and property, ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations and prosecute anyone found culpable.

The latest attack on the estate security guard has further heightened concerns among residents and stakeholders over recurring allegations of violent land-grabbing activities in parts of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

APC Appeal Petition Sparks Fresh Controversy Over Lagos Primaries as President Tinubu Reportedly Frowns at Candidate Imposition

By Naomi Onome

Fresh controversy has continued to trail the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II, following a formal petition submitted to the party’s Electoral Appeal Committee by former House of Representatives member Hon. Engr Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson.

In a letter dated May 16, 2026, and addressed to the APC Electoral Appeal Committee in Ikeja, Johnson alleged widespread electoral irregularities, intimidation, result manipulation and abuse of office during the primary election conducted in Isolo LCDA.

The petition, copied to the APC Lagos State Chairman and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, accused the Executive Chairman of Isolo LCDA, Mr Bayo Olasoju, of using his office and influence to interfere with the conduct of the exercise.

Johnson alleged that even before the commencement of the primary, reports had circulated within the constituency suggesting that a preferred candidate had already been predetermined for imposition on party members, creating tension and distrust among party faithful.

According to him, the development undermined the principles of fairness, transparency and internal democracy within the APC.

Among the allegations raised in the petition were the suppression of members’ voting rights, intimidation by security operatives, manipulation of election results, and the failure of returning officers to use official result sheets during collation.

The former lawmaker further claimed that improvised exercise books and unofficial materials were allegedly used to record and announce results across wards, a situation he said compromised the credibility and legitimacy of the exercise.

Johnson also alleged that figures eventually announced in several wards were falsified and inflated beyond the actual votes counted at polling stations.

The petition further accused the Isolo LCDA chairman of harassing and intimidating a journalist who reportedly covered the election, alleging that the journalist’s mobile phone was seized, files were deleted and the device was damaged.

Describing the incidents as violations of democratic principles and fundamental human rights, Johnson urged the Electoral Appeal Committee to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into the conduct of the primary election.

He also called on the committee to investigate the role allegedly played by security operatives, review the involvement of all persons connected to the reported irregularities, and take disciplinary action against anyone found culpable.

The former lawmaker further appealed to the party leadership to restore confidence in the APC’s internal democratic process and ensure transparent and credible primaries in future elections.

Meanwhile, fresh information emerging from a late-night meeting reportedly held at the Ikoyi residence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with South-West APC leaders has added another dimension to the unfolding controversy.

Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that President Tinubu allegedly expressed displeasure over reports of internal party developments and alleged imposition of candidates in some states.

According to the sources, the president reportedly stated that while governors were given the privilege to coordinate party affairs in their respective states, such powers should not be abused through indiscriminate imposition of candidates.

The sources further claimed that Tinubu stressed that no individual should serve as “a judge in his own case" and reportedly directed the APC National Chairman and National Secretary to address situations where free and fair primaries did not take place.

It was also gathered that the party’s working committee allegedly directed that no results from disputed primaries should be officially announced pending transmission to Abuja for final ratification.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the APC leadership nor Mr Bayo Olasoju had officially responded to the allegations contained in the petition.

By Naomi Onome

A 9-year-old author, Adedoyin Precious Shanu, has inspired children and parents alike with the launch of her new book, 'Tola the Bully', a children’s story aimed at discouraging bullying and promoting kindness among young people.

The colourful launch event, held in Lagos, attracted pupils, teachers, parents, and guests from different schools who gathered to celebrate the remarkable achievement of the young writer.

Through the book, Adedoyin delivers a strong message against bullying in schools and among peers, encouraging children to embrace love, friendship, support, and respect for one another.

One of the major highlights of the event was the review of the book, where speakers discussed the important lessons contained in the publication. Guests commended the young author for addressing a sensitive social issue at such a young age, describing her as intelligent, courageous, and highly creative.

Tola the Bully tells the story of the emotional pain bullying can cause and teaches children the importance of kindness and compassion. Using relatable characters and simple storytelling, the book encourages children to speak up against intimidation and support victims of bullying.

Reviewers at the launch noted that the book could serve as an important educational resource for schools, parents, and teachers in guiding children toward positive behaviour and healthy relationships. They stressed that bullying remains a growing concern in many schools and that educational books like Tola the Bully can help shape better attitudes among pupils.

Beyond its anti-bullying message, the book also promotes discipline, hard work, unity, self-confidence, and love, inspiring children to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

Speaking at the event, guests applauded Adedoyin for her confidence and maturity, describing her as a role model to other children. Many expressed amazement that such a powerful message could come from a 9-year-old author, proving that age is not a barrier to making a meaningful impact.

Parents and educators also used the occasion to encourage children to develop reading and writing habits, noting that creative expression can help young people contribute positively to society.

The successful unveiling of Tola the Bully marks what many believe is the beginning of a bright future for the young author, whose message of kindness and courage is already inspiring children to reject cruelty and embrace friendship.

Youth Rights Campaign Condemns DSS Invitation, Accuses Nursing School CEO of Using Security to Silence Dissent

By Naomisophyblog

The DSS Enugu Command has invited Francis Nwapa, Socialist Activist and Human Rights Advocate to appear before them on Tuesday, 19th August, over the intervention of the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) against the illegal expulsion of a student nurse from Ezzy International College of Nursing Science, Enugu.

YRC has made it clear to the DSS that if my presence is truly necessary, they should either transfer the invitation to their Lagos office where I reside or provide flight arrangements to Enugu.

Apparently, the CEO of the school, Dr. Gloria Bertram Okoli, has now chosen to deploy the DSS as a tool to silence dissent and crush every voice speaking out against administrative authoritarianism, victimisation and repression within the institution.

It is disgraceful that while Nigeria is being ravaged by insecurity, killings, banditry and armed groups, the DSS is being reduced to an instrument for intimidating students, activists and all those who challenge injustice and abuse of power.

Let this be clear: intimidation will not silence us. Repression will not break us. YRC will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with oppressed students, workers and poor Nigerians resisting exploitation, victimisation and authoritarian attacks on democratic rights.

Police Launch Manhunt for Ogun Monarch Over Alleged Attack on Property Consultant in Lagos Land Dispute

By Naomi Onome

The Nigerian Police have launched a manhunt for the Osobia of Ijebu Makun-Omi in Ogun State, Oba Kazeem Adeshina Salami, popularly known as “All Rounder", over allegations that he hired armed thugs to attack a property consultant, Stanley Oripelaye, and intimidate workers in connection with a disputed parcel of land in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The allegations are contained in a petition submitted to the Inspector-General of Police by Cosmopolitan Properties Ltd, accusing the monarch and five other individuals of orchestrating repeated acts of violence, intimidation, burglary and destruction of property linked to alleged land-grabbing activities.

The petition, dated October 14, 2025, was written by Kayode Sofola & Associates on behalf of the company. It named the suspects as Idowu Hassan; Saheed Abiodun; Abidoye Opeyemi; Segun, also known as "Obasanjo"; and one Alujo, who were alleged to have acted on the instructions of Oba Salami.

According to the petition, the incidents occurred on the company’s property located at Sections 13, 28, 43, 58 and 73, Zone 31, in the Alasia/Ajiwe area of Eti-Osa, Lagos.

The company alleged that the first attack took place in June 2025 when the suspects reportedly invaded the property and assaulted its security guard, Afolabi Yisau. Although the matter was reported at Ogombo Police Station, the company claimed no arrest or prosecution followed.

It further alleged that the same group returned in July 2025, attacked the guard again and threatened to kill him if he failed to vacate the property.

The petition stated that towards the end of July, the suspects allegedly blocked the entrance to the property with a Toyota Sienna vehicle belonging to Idowu Hassan, assaulted the security guard and vandalised parts of the building. The company claimed police later arrested the suspects and recovered illicit drugs from the vehicle.

However, Cosmopolitan Properties alleged that the suspects were subsequently released without charges and continued to harass workers and security personnel attached to the property.

The petition also alleged that on September 18, 2025, the company’s property consultant, Stanley Oripelaye, narrowly escaped death after he was allegedly attacked on the property by men armed with cutlasses and daggers.

According to the company, the assailants damaged parts of the building, including the roof, after failing to locate the security guard. Photographs of the damage were reportedly submitted to the police as part of evidence.

Another alleged invasion reportedly occurred on October 12, 2025, when the suspects allegedly returned to the site and harassed security personnel on duty.

In a follow-up letter dated January 29, 2026, titled “Save Our Soul", Oripelaye appealed directly to the Inspector-General of Police, alleging that the earlier petition had not been properly investigated and that threats to his life and other staff members had continued.

The letter urged the IGP to direct CSP Mohammed Abdulkareem of the IGP Monitoring Unit to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

The follow-up correspondence also revealed that Oba Salami had filed a N350 million lawsuit against the IGP, Stanley Oripelaye, and others over alleged infringement of his rights but reportedly lost the case on December 4, 2025.

Cosmopolitan Properties maintained that it had remained law-abiding despite the alleged attacks and intimidation, stressing that the incidents had disrupted its operations and placed its workers in fear.

The company appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the protection of its staff, conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and prosecute anyone found culpable.

The allegations remain unproven in court, and all individuals mentioned are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Nollywood Veterans Rally Support for Desmond Elliot’s Re-election Bid, Urge Gbajabiamila's Endorsement Ahead of APC Primaries

By Naomi Onome

Veteran actors, filmmakers and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative industry, Nollywood, have appealed to the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, to throw his weight behind the re-election bid of Desmond Elliot for another term in the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency I.

The appeal was made during a press conference attended by several prominent Nollywood figures, including Zik Zulu Okafor, Zeb Ejiro, Fred Amata, Emeka Ossai, Ejike Asiegbu, Ralph Nwadike, Bimbo Manuel and Francis Onwochei.

Reading a jointly signed statement on behalf of the group, Zik Zulu Okafor described Surulere as the “historical and cultural capital of Nollywood", stressing that Elliot remained one of the strongest links between the creative industry and government.

According to the statement, the lawmaker's return to the Lagos Assembly would position him for higher legislative responsibilities such as Speaker, Deputy Speaker or Majority Leader, thereby giving the Nigerian creative industry stronger representation in governance.

The stakeholders argued that Elliot had demonstrated loyalty, humility and grassroots connection despite his celebrity status, citing his interventions in healthcare, youth empowerment, education support, electricity projects and humanitarian services within Surulere Constituency I.

“For us, this appeal goes beyond politics. It is deeply moral, historical and symbolic,” Okafor stated while formally presenting the appeal.

The group also recalled the political journey of Gbajabiamila, noting that he once faced opposition before eventually emerging as Speaker of the House of Representatives and, later, Chief of Staff to the President.

They maintained that Elliot stood firmly with Gbajabiamila during difficult political periods and therefore deserved similar support at what they described as a “defining moment” in his legislative career.

Veteran filmmaker Zeb Ejiro said the gathering was not politically motivated but driven by concern from industry elders and practitioners who believed Elliot had distinguished himself through service.

“We are not politicians. We are filmmakers and members of Nollywood. One of our own is facing a challenge, and we are appealing for support,” Ejiro said.

Speaking further, Ralph Nwadike insisted the intervention was purely an appeal for mentorship and continuity, emphasising that the group respected the political leadership structure in Surulere.

Fred Amata, while addressing journalists, described Elliot as “an exceptional kind of politician” whose creative background had influenced his style of leadership and public service.

The stakeholders highlighted several constituency projects allegedly executed by Elliot, including road rehabilitation, drainage maintenance, healthcare interventions, youth training programmes, educational scholarships and electricity transformer installations.

They also praised Elliot’s accessibility to residents, claiming he remained open to assisting vulnerable persons irrespective of social status.

The group of veteran actors clarified that their concern was mainly about the forthcoming party primaries, which they described as critical to Elliot’s political future.

According to them, securing another term could pave the way for Elliot to attain strategic leadership positions within the Lagos State House of Assembly.

They urged Gbajabiamila to publicly endorse Elliot and use his political influence to facilitate consensus among aspirants contesting the Surulere Constituency I seat under the ruling party.

“We want our colleague and representative to return because this is a defining moment in his political career,” one of the speakers stated.

The stakeholders concluded by pledging to mobilise support within the creative industry and Surulere community ahead of the electoral process.

“Police Is Your Friend” — Eze Chika Nwokedi Bags Double Police Honours From AIGs in Lagos.

By Naomi Onome

Businessman and philanthropist Eze Chika Nwokedi has received double honours from two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in recognition of his sustained support for the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies across the country.

The honours were bestowed on him by AIG Okunade Ronke Nurat and AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom during separate engagements in Lagos on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Speaking after the awards presentation, Nwokedi said the recognition came as a surprise during what he described as his usual routine visits to police formations to encourage officers and donate operational support materials.

According to Nwokedi, during a courtesy visit to the FCID Annex, Alagbon, AIG Akpanudom openly commended his humility, loyalty and commitment to supporting security institutions without seeking personal favours.

AIG Akpanudom disclosed that he had closely observed his activities over the years and was impressed that despite his relationship with top officers, Nwokedi had never exploited such connections for undue advantage.

During the visit, AIG Akpanudom reportedly invited several commissioners of police and senior officers, including DCP Uche, to witness the presentation of the award to Nwokedi.

Presenting the award, the police chief described Nwokedi as a man dedicated to humanity and nation-building, adding that he deserved to be celebrated for his contributions to society and support for the police institution. He also prayed for Nwokedi and urged him not to relent in his efforts towards supporting security agencies and promoting peace in the country.

Responding, Nwokedi expressed appreciation for the recognition, describing the gesture as unexpected, thoughtful and deeply appreciated. He was honoured for his generosity, support and cordial relationship with officers and men of the force.

The philanthropist further revealed that shortly after leaving Alagbon, he proceeded to the Maritime Command, where he was also honoured by AIG Okunade Ronke Nurat for his continuous support and encouragement to security personnel.

Officers at the Maritime Command further commended Nwokedi's humanitarian gestures and documented the event through video recordings, with several officers speaking glowingly about his personality and contributions to the welfare of security personnel. Nwokedi noted that the recognition from different police formations reflects growing appreciation for citizens who support and encourage security institutions.

Over the years, the businessman has become known for his charitable interventions, empowerment programmes and regular support for officers of the police, army and navy, as well as vulnerable members of society. He disclosed that part of his support initiatives includes donating useful items such as wristwatches, chargers and other materials to security personnel as a means of boosting morale and encouraging them in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking on the state of policing in Nigeria, Nwokedi maintained that although there are bad elements within the system, many officers remain committed to protecting lives and property. He urged Nigerians to support responsible officers while exposing bad eggs within the security architecture, stressing that meaningful collaboration between citizens and security agencies remains vital to national security.

Reacting to the honours, well-wishers and associates congratulated the philanthropist on the recognition.

One of his associates, Ikechukwu Kabiyesi Agubata Dike of the “Frommetoyou Series” on YouTube, described him as “a man of honour” whose service to humanity has gained deserved recognition.

Similarly, legal practitioner Anayo Ejiofor congratulated Nwokedi on receiving “two awards from two senior police officers in one day", describing him as “a powerful civilian” and a practical example of the phrase "Police is your friend".

Outrage as Slain Lucky Amauche’s Killers Remain at Large Five Months After Murder, Family Accuses Delta Police of Neglect, Extortion

By Naomisophyblog

Nearly five months after a young Nigerian, Lucky Amauche Ezeji, was brutally murdered in Kwale, Delta State, his family says justice remains elusive as no meaningful arrests or thorough investigation have been carried out by the police.

The late Ezeji, an Accountancy graduate of Delta State Polytechnic and reportedly over 30 years old, was shot dead on Christmas Day at about 8 p.m. while visiting his grandmother alongside his pregnant wife for the yuletide celebration. According to reports, he had briefly stepped out to retrieve his phone charger from his nearby residence when gunmen allegedly trailed and attacked him.

Preliminary findings suggested that suspected cultists may have mistaken him for a rival gang member amid an ongoing clash between members of the Eiye and confraternities in the area. However, there has been no evidence linking the deceased to cult activities.

The family expressed frustration over what they described as the Delta State Police Command’s lack of commitment to the investigation. They alleged that despite providing intelligence and multiple leads to investigators, little or no action has been taken to apprehend those responsible for the killing.

According to the family, officers attached to the Kwale Division and the State Command in Asaba allegedly demanded money at different stages of the investigation while failing to carry out promised actions. They further claimed that investigators requested ₦50,000 per phone number to track contacts extracted from the deceased’s call logs — a cost the grieving family could not afford.

The family also accused the Investigating Police Officer, identified as Udofia Kufure, of allegedly collecting ₦100,000 from them for arrest operations after receiving information suggesting that an argument may have preceded the killing, yet no arrest was made.

Dissatisfied with the handling of the case in kwale by the IPO Udofia Kufure who allegedly had collected N100,000 to commence investigation and demanded another N250,000 for call log, the family reportedly made complaints to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Muyiwa Adejobi, who was said to have intervened by transferring aspects of the matter back to the State Command following complaints of negligence and inaction.

They further alleged that despite identifying a hotel connected to the incident and informing operatives of the Homicide Department of the command as directed by DC Muyiwa Adejobi, no officer has visited the scene to obtain CCTV footage that could aid investigations.

Several efforts to reach DC Muyiwa Adejobi to give reports as per his directives which was stalled by the homicide department of the command proved abortive. He was simply unreachable, all calls and messages were left unanswered. The head of the homicide department as well didn't act according to the information given by the family which could help apprehend the perpetrators. There was poor supervision from the head of the homicide department to his subordinates leading to a stalled investigation or no investigation at all.

The bereaved family said several other useful pieces of information pointing to possible suspects have allegedly been ignored by investigators, raising concerns over what they described as deliberate efforts to frustrate the case.

As preparations intensify to bury the deceased this weekend in his hometown in Imo State, relatives say they are devastated that his killers may never be brought to justice. The slain graduate reportedly left behind a pregnant wife and was expecting his first child before his life was cut short.

Their fear is that his burial will feel like a victory lap for armed groups in Kwale and beyond—proof that parts of Delta operate outside the law, where security is bought, not guaranteed.

The incident has also sparked broader concerns among residents over insecurity in Kwale and other parts of Delta State, with many questioning the commitment of law enforcement authorities to protecting lives and ensuring justice for victims of violent crimes.

The question hanging over the Delta State Police Command is simple: Is the Nigeria Police in Delta running a “cash and carry” system, where protection goes to the highest bidder?

2027: APC Leaders Adopt Lagos Majority Leader As Consensus Candidate

Naomisophyblog

Ahead of the party primaries scheduled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election, leaders in Eti-Osa, Lagos, have endorsed a lawmaker, Noheem Adams, as consensus the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Adams, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1, is the Majority Leader of the Lagos Assembly and becomes the first lawmaker in Lagos to be endorsed as consensus candidate.

In three different letters addressed to the APC Secretariat and leadership of the party in Lagos, the leaders and residents indicated their trust in the lawmaker's ability to galvanise residents for success. They also affirmed what they described as his effective representation and loyalty to the party and people of his constituency.

One of the letters dated March 26, 2026 and signed by 26 leaders including Engr. Murphy Adetoro (member, Governance Advisory Council) and Alhaji Raheem Alli, Apex Leader, Eti-Osa East LCDA, notified the party that Adams had been unanimously picked as the consensus candidate for the constituency.

In the letter with the title: 'Notification On Our Consensus Candidate In Eti-osa Constituency I', the leaders said: "We, the combined body of the All Progressives Congress, Central Working Committee, (CWC) and Apex Leaders in Eti-Osa Constituency I, are pleased to notify you of our consensus candidate for the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly elections in Eti-Osa Constituency I.

"It is instructive that after careful deliberation and review of his performance in office, we have unanimously endorsed Hon. Noheem Babatunde Adams as our candidate."

The letter said Adams had demonstrated proven leadership and delivered visible results, "earning him the trust and admiration of our community.

"His commitment to constituent engagement, responsive governance, and community development has made a tangible impact on our constituency. We are convinced that his re-election will consolidate our gains and drive further progress.

"We urge the party leadership to ratify our consensus and ensure a smooth path for Hon. Adams' candidature. This is important as we need a united front and enough planning time to prepare well for the elections of our president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other elective positions.

In another letter sent to the Lagos APC chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, 16 ward and LGA chairmen in Eti-Osa confirmed the decision of the Central Working Committee in Eti-Osa on the adoption of Adams as consensus candidate.

"We are convinced that with Hon. Noheem Adams as standard bearer, APC shall secure a landslide victory across all elective positions in Eti-Osa Constituency 1 in 2027.

"This is a project we have adopted as our own, and we pledge to deploy all structures, influence, and electoral machinery for its total success.

Meanwhile, the Lekki Residents Association, through its President, Alhaji Sulyman Bello, and executive members, have promised to mobilise support for Noheem Adams.

In another letter to the Lagos APC chairman, the association promised to ensure massive votes for the party because of their support for Adams, who had been a pillar of support to the residents.

Alleged Land Grabber Micheal Amadi-Orwu Re-Arrested Over N1bn Property Destruction in Port Harcourt

By Victor Ani

A property owner, identified as Hon. Dr Chris, has accused an alleged land grabber, Mr Michael Amadi-Orwu, of orchestrating the demolition and takeover of his property valued at over N1 billion in Port Harcourt, sparking renewed police action and public concern over land racketeering in the state.

Hon. Dr Chris alleged that the suspect forcefully took over his property built on over 10,000 square metres of land situated along the new airport road. The said property can be accessed from Port Harcourt Airport or the Obirikwere flyover.

Amadi-Orwu is alleged to have encroached on properties surrounding Victoria Creek Gardens Estate in Ikwerre LGA, destroying buildings, including a bungalow, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, and security installations, before clearing over 10,000 square metres of land. Hon. Dr Chris further claims the land has been subdivided and possibly sold to unsuspecting buyers, an action that has drawn public outcry.

According to him, the dispute dates back to 2021, when the suspect allegedly began pressuring him to sell the land, warning of consequences if he refused. He said repeated attempts to rebuild damaged structures over the years were met with further demolition, which he initially attributed to environmental factors before discovering human interference.

The situation escalated in 2025 when the structures were reportedly fully dismantled, prompting formal complaints to law enforcement authorities. Despite an earlier arrest, Hon. Dr Chris claimed the matter stalled, alleging that the suspect acted with impunity and repeatedly returned to the site to continue activities.

According to the complainants, the matter was initially reported to the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, whose intervention temporarily halted the demolition of the property. However, the suspect allegedly returned on multiple occasions to continue the destruction. Each time the police intervened and stopped the activity, he reportedly resumed shortly after, raising serious concerns about possible compromise within the system.

He further alleged that the suspect made claims of influence over security agencies and the judiciary in Rivers State, creating fear among affected parties and discouraging legal action.

The suspect Micheal Amadi-Orwu allegedly made a series of bold and disturbing claims, asserting that he has powerful connections within the police and that no action would be taken against him regardless of where the case is reported. He boasted of having judges in Rivers State on his payroll, insisting that no court in the state would deliver justice once his name was mentioned.

In addition, he reportedly threatened the rightful owners of the property, warning them to abandon it or risk being killed. Amadi-Orwu also claimed that his gatekeeper is a police officer and that he enjoys round-the-clock police protection, stating that officers would back down at the mere mention of his name. Amadi revealed that he controls local thugs and cult groups in the area, cautioning the complainants against returning to the property.

However, recent developments indicate a shift in the case. Police authorities, acting on fresh directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, have re-arrested and detained the suspect Amadi-Orwu. Sources indicate that the IGP Monitoring Unit is currently handling the matter, with steps underway to conclude investigations and initiate prosecution.

The alleged offences linked to the suspect include threats to life, threats of violence, wanton demolition of buildings and perimeter fences, and the carting away of valuables, including building materials. He is also accused of criminal malicious damage, vandalisation, and the removal of government survey beacons, as well as criminal trespass and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. Further allegations include involvement in land racketeering and the forgery of land documents.

Hon. Dr Chris said his decision to speak publicly was aimed at alerting members of the public and potential land buyers to avoid the disputed property, warning that multiple sales could trigger further legal disputes.

The case has also drawn attention to broader allegations of land grabbing and violent property disputes in parts of Rivers State, particularly along developing corridors such as Airport Road, where rapid urban expansion has intensified ownership conflicts.

Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest arrest, but insiders suggest that the renewed action signals a stronger stance against land-related crimes and enforcement of property rights.

As investigations continue, it is imperative to say that the outcome of the case may serve as a critical test of law enforcement’s resolve to tackle land racketeering and restore public confidence in the justice system.

Family Alleges Compromise, Demands Review in Murder Case of Globus Bank Manager Orovwuje Fidelis by Wife

By Naomi Onome

The family of the late Orovwuje Fidelis, who until his death was a manager with Globus Bank, has raised alarm over what it described as a “suspicious twist” in the investigation into his alleged murder, reportedly linked to his wife, Olajumoke Fidelis Orovwuje (née Akintoye), and her brother.

Fidelis was found dead on February 8, 2026, at his residence located at 5 Unity Close, Unity Estate, off CMD Road, Ikosi-Ketu, Lagos. Initial police investigations led to the arrest and arraignment of his wife, a staff member of MTN, after detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, reportedly established a case against her based on what was described as overwhelming evidence. She was subsequently remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

An autopsy conducted by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital confirmed that the deceased died from injuries sustained during an attack involving both blunt and sharp force trauma. Investigators also relied on CCTV footage from the estate, which allegedly showed the suspect and her brother, identified simply as Abe, as the last persons seen with the deceased prior to his death.

However, in a development that has sparked controversy, the DPP’s legal advice reportedly stated that there was no prima facie case linking the suspects to the crime. The advice was said to have been signed by a former Director of Public Prosecutions, after he had reportedly vacated the office—raising concerns from the deceased’s family about the credibility of the process.

In a petition addressed to the Lagos State Attorney General through their legal representatives, Aham Harbour & Co., the family called for an immediate review of the DPP’s advice, alleging inconsistencies with the evidence gathered during police investigations.

According to the petition signed by the firm’s principal partner, Barrister Ahamefula Harbour, the circumstances surrounding Fidelis’ death point strongly to foul play. The family cited the restricted access policy of the estate, absence of forced entry, and the suspect’s admission of a quarrel with the deceased on the eve of his death as critical elements suggesting culpability.

The petition further questioned the suspect’s account of events, noting discrepancies in her claims, including her statement about attending church on the morning of the incident, which police reportedly could not verify due to inconclusive CCTV footage from the church.

Additionally, the family expressed suspicion over the involvement of the suspect’s brother, who was allegedly captured on estate surveillance entering the premises around the time the crime was believed to have occurred. Authorities at SCID, Panti, are said to be continuing investigations to determine his possible role.

The petition also highlighted what it described as unusual conduct by the suspect following the incident, including her failure to notify the deceased’s immediate family members in Lagos, instead contacting a relative based in the United States.

The family maintained that the weight of circumstantial evidence, including forensic findings and the sequence of events, establishes a prima facie case against the suspects. They further alleged that attempts were made by the suspect’s family to secure her release prior to her arraignment but were unsuccessful due to the strength of the case.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the DPP’s position, the family urged the attorney general to intervene and ensure a fresh, unbiased review of the case file, insisting that justice must be served.

“The deceased’s family does not want his death to be in vain. They are calling for the full weight of the law to be applied so that those responsible are held accountable,” the petition stated.

The matter is scheduled to come up at the Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on April 30, 2026.

Eze Chika Nwokedi Commends Lagos CP Fatai Tijani, Urges Residents to Support Fight Against Cultism

By Naomi Onome

Eze Chika Nwokedi, the Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo has praised the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, for his proactive approach to improving security through sustained engagement with communities and police formations across the state.

Nwokedi gave the commendation after attending a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Area Commander of Area M Command, Tokunbo Abaniwonda, during CP Fatai Tijani’s visit. The meeting brought together community leaders and security stakeholders to address the rising incidence of cult-related violence in the Alimosho axis.

According to Nwokedi, the engagement provided a platform for frank discussions on strengthening community policing as a practical solution to insecurity. He stressed that civilians must not resort to self-help or violence but instead contribute through intelligence sharing, dialogue, and community-driven solutions.

Nwokedi also urged residents of Idimu, Ikotun, Igando and surrounding areas to support security agencies with timely and credible information to enable swift intervention.

Reaffirming his commitment to peace and development, he called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities, noting that trust and cooperation remain key to tackling crime effectively.

Speaking during the visit, CP Tijani reiterated his commitment to enhancing security through stakeholder engagement and community-based policing strategies. Since assuming office on March 26, 2026, he said the command has prioritised advocacy meetings, crime prevention initiatives, and partnerships aimed at reducing criminal activities across Lagos.

The Commissioner explained that his tour of police formations, including Area M Command covering Idimu, Ikotun, Igando and Egbeda, is designed to assess security challenges, improve operational efficiency, and boost morale among officers.

He identified key challenges such as manpower shortages, logistics constraints, and inadequate equipment, noting that addressing these issues is critical to achieving effective policing across the state.

Tijani warned that a lack of public cooperation could embolden criminal elements, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.

“The police cannot do everything alone. We need the support of the people to expose those involved in criminal activities,” he said.

He also raised concerns over the growing threat posed by cult groups, describing their activities as dangerous to lives, property, and economic stability. He urged residents, particularly in Agege and Idimu, to remain vigilant and provide useful intelligence, assuring them that such information would be treated with strict confidentiality.

The CP further called on parents and community leaders to play a more active role in guiding youths away from crime by reinforcing discipline and traditional values.

He added that the command would intensify operations against criminal hideouts and sustain patrols across flashpoints, while deepening collaboration with communities to improve overall security.

Stakeholders at the meeting pledged continued support for the police through improved information sharing and stronger community engagement.

Eze Chika Nwokedi, Okpoko I, President, Ndigbo Buru Otu Association of Nigeria, was present at the Lagos State Commissioner of Police’s visit, accompanied by executive members of the association.

Anti-Graft War 'Politicised', Activist Alleges, Calls for EFCC Chairman’s Sack

By Naomi Onome

A human rights activist, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, has called for the resignation of Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing the anti-corruption agency of failing in its mandate and allegedly succumbing to political influence.

In a strongly worded statement, Comrade Iche described the country’s fight against corruption as ineffective, alleging that the EFCC has become selective in its operations. According to him, the agency appears to target “low-level offenders” while high-profile political figures evade accountability. He argued that Nigeria’s anti-corruption war would only gain credibility when the EFCC operates with full independence, free from interference by political actors.

Iche further expressed concern over what he described as a pattern where politicians under investigation defect to ruling parties and subsequently avoid prosecution. He cited cases involving prominent figures, including former Abia State governor Orji Uzor Kalu, former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging that anti-graft investigations against them have either stalled or lost momentum.

However, the statement also referenced former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who has faced corruption allegations in the past. Iche criticised what he described as the failure of authorities to ensure accountability, despite public claims and reported evidence by the EFCC.

He further alleged that political considerations influence enforcement actions, pointing to what he described as inconsistent treatment of political figures, including former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. According to him, individuals perceived to be outside the ruling political structure face greater scrutiny.

Iche also criticised past administrations, including that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, claiming that anti-corruption efforts did not significantly impact high-level corruption. He referenced the case of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele as one of the few prominent prosecutions.

Raising broader economic concerns, Iche linked Nigeria’s rising debt profile to alleged corruption and mismanagement of public funds. He argued that resources that could have been recovered through effective anti-corruption measures are instead lost, worsening economic hardship for citizens.

The statement also touched on Nigeria’s international image, with Iche expressing concern that corruption and governance challenges have contributed to negative perceptions of Nigerians abroad.

He concluded by urging reforms that would strengthen institutional independence, ensure accountability among public officials, and restore public confidence in the anti-corruption framework.

“Where Will Residents Dump Waste?” — Activists Ask Key Question as Lagos Plans Sanitation Return

...Proposes 50,000 Sanitation Jobs to Tackle Lagos Waste Crisis

By Naomi Onome

A human rights activist, Comrade Prince Saviour, has raised concerns over the Lagos State Government’s reported plan to reintroduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, questioning its past effectiveness and current feasibility.

Speaking on the issue, Saviour queried the impact of the previous sanitation regime before it was suspended, asking whether it significantly improved cleanliness in the state or positioned Lagos as one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria or globally.

He also challenged authorities to explain any negative environmental consequences recorded during the period the exercise was discontinued.

The activist blamed the persistent problem of indiscriminate waste disposal across the state on what he described as systemic failures by the government, particularly the absence of accessible waste collection infrastructure.

According to him, Lagos once had functional waste collection points, including strategically placed bins and containers in markets, bus stops, and densely populated areas, which made proper waste disposal easier for residents.

“Today, those facilities are largely absent. In many areas, residents have no choice but to dump refuse along walkways and open spaces because there are no designated alternatives,” he said.

Saviour noted that in some locations, such as Mushin and Agege Motor Road, where waste containers still exist, they are often not promptly evacuated, leading to overflow and repeated dumping at the same spots.

He further expressed concern over the apparent decline in waste collection services, questioning the operational capacity of waste management trucks and the reliance on informal cart pushers who collect refuse from hard-to-reach areas without clear disposal processes.

The activist also criticised the government’s enforcement-driven approach, including fines and penalties for improper waste disposal, arguing that such measures should be complemented with adequate infrastructure and public services.

He proposed the revival of a structured environmental sanitation workforce similar to the “wolewole” system of the past, suggesting the employment of up to 50,000 sanitation officers. According to him, these officers could monitor compliance at household and community levels, issue sanitation tickets, and generate revenue to sustain the initiative.

Saviour also questioned the potential overlap between the proposed monthly sanitation exercise and the existing Thursday market sanitation, describing the latter as largely ineffective since traders are expected to clean their spaces daily.

He warned that enforcing both exercises could disrupt economic activities and create unnecessary hardship for residents and business owners.

Additionally, he raised concerns about possible legal implications, recalling that the previous sanitation exercise was halted following a court ruling. He cautioned that restricting movement during sanitation hours could pose risks, particularly in emergency situations.

While acknowledging the need for a cleaner Lagos, Saviour urged the government to prioritise proper planning, provision of waste disposal facilities, and effective service delivery before reintroducing restrictive policies.

“There must be clear answers on where residents are expected to dispose of their waste. Without proper alternatives, enforcement alone will not solve the problem,” he said.

He maintained that with the right infrastructure and policies, Lagos has the potential to become one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

Trafficking Survivors: Inside the Côte d’Ivoire Trafficking Ring That Ensnared Four Nigerian Girls

By Naomi Onome

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire — Four young Nigerian women, including three named Favour and one named Esther, have been rescued from a suspected sex trafficking ring in Côte d’Ivoire and safely repatriated to Nigeria following a coordinated intervention by the Nigerian community in the Bagoué Region.

The rescue operation was led by Mr. Oluwaseun Odusanya, Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization (GAHTO) Representative in Côte d’Ivoire and Chairman of the Nigerian Community in Bagoué Region. The victims, aged between 16 and 23, were trafficked from Delta and Imo States under false promises of legitimate employment.

According to the survivors, they endured threats, deception, and forced involvement in sex work. Two of the women spent over a year in Côte d’Ivoire, one stayed three months, and another was returned within a month of arrival.

The youngest victim, identified as “Small Favour,” 16, recounted leaving Nigeria at age 15 after being promised a sales job. She revealed that financial difficulties in her family compelled her to drop out of school to seek income. Upon arrival, she was forced into sex work and told she owed her trafficker two million CFA francs, a debt she had to repay before gaining freedom before reporting her case to the Nigerian Embassy.

Esther, 22, from Imo State, was recruited in Lagos and coerced into sex work at a hotel, where she had to remit daily payments to her trafficker. “They told me that I should do "ashawo work,” she said, referring to sex work.

The oldest victim, “Senior Favour,” 23, from Delta State, described severe abuse, including beatings and threats to remove her womb if she refused to comply. She contacted a Nigerian man after three months who facilitated her return to Nigeria. She is an orphan with a child who's currently living with her mother-in-law.

Another woman named Favour, 21, also from Delta State, left a restaurant job in Nigeria after a former colleague convinced her of better pay abroad. She traveled with her sister but was intercepted by police in Côte d’Ivoire and sent back after one month, as the trafficker deemed her unsuitable for sex work.

All four women cited economic hardship and unemployment as reasons for their attempts to travel abroad. They warn others against falling victim to similar trafficking schemes.

The rescued women have requested support to rebuild their lives, expressing interest in legitimate work and vocational training. Authorities urge parents and young Nigerians to verify overseas job offers and report suspicious recruitment activities to law enforcement agencies.

Prosper Kayode Ayobami Michael, Founder of Global Anti Human Trafficking Organization - GAHTO emphasized the importance of vigilance against trafficking networks operating between Nigeria and West African countries. GAHTO has recently intensified efforts against human trafficking, he said.

Prosper says GAHTO —established in 2019 and backed by over 20 years of humanitarian experience—focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and empowering victims of human trafficking. He noted that GAHTO currently operates without government funding or NGO partnerships, relying on limited resources to carry out rescue missions while urging future collaborations to strengthen its work.

He emphasized that poverty remains a major driver of trafficking and called for stronger poverty reduction efforts, improved parent-child communication, and increased vigilance at home to prevent children from falling victim to traffickers.

He also warned traffickers that their activities will not go unpunished, describing trafficking as a crime against humanity after recounting the ordeal of rescued victims who were reportedly held in captivity in West African countries under harsh conditions.

Michael said GAHTO remains committed to expanding its rescue operations across Nigeria and West Africa and aims to become a leading anti-trafficking NGO in the country. He further expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Ambassadors and embassy staffs of countries in West Africa for their swift intervention in the repatriation of rescued victims, noting the embassy’s commitment to collaboration in ongoing anti-trafficking efforts.
