From a beggar to a giver: Eze Chika Nwokedi tells a success story as he gifts 180 widows food items for Christmas. By Onome Naomi Eze Chika Nwokedi, the Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo, Chairman of the Council of Ndieze Igbo Lagos, and President of the Ndigbo Buru'Otu Association of Nigeria, gifts about 180 widows food items to celebrate Christmas on Saturday, December 14th, 2024. Says he is thankful to God for uplifting his status from being needy to having enough to give to the less privileged. The exercise, which took place in Eze Chika's palatial residence in Ijegun, saw widows and widowers presented with rice in bags, noodles in cartons, some tubers of yam, printed clothing materials, namely Ankara, wristwatches, and other items, including cash. The annual event of gifting the widows and widowers is majorly to express love and support, as noted by Eze Chika. Eze Chika also explained that he made a covenant with God during his period of crisis many years ago after experiencing poverty that if he becomes successful in life, he must feed the hungry and assist the less privileged as seen this day. Recounting his experiences, he told the audience that he had once begged for food to survive with no help or tangible support; he subjects himself to hard and manual labor, which leaves him with little or nothing to survive on. Encourage the widows to keep faith and hopes alive. He told pressmen at the event that as an Eze, he's inclined to make a difference in his jurisdiction of reign not to show off but to be intentional about favoring the less privileged; he says he begged to eat and slept in his shop in Ladipo for over 7 years until his status changed after facing rejection for lack of money and good clothes. Vowed to be a blessing unto others if God blesses him. He further said: "I feel inclined to give, after all I went through in the years of struggling, but today a beggar has become a giver." "I do not own an overly expensive car; when I'm aware my neighbor is hungry, I call that oppression. Live as large as you want, but make sure the needy feel your impact in their lives; never look down on them; they need help; just help them." "The wealthy who can afford to eat and live expensively should endeavor to give charity; do not give to the needy what you cannot eat in your house; show charity by giving scholarships to people's children so that your own children will also do well in life. Many rich men gave their children the best, yet these children turned out to be nonentities in life; moreover, when death calls, a man will be judged according to the work of his hands." "Whenever I give, I feel fulfilled; this will be the 3rd year of running the widows program as Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo, which is created to celebrate not just the widows but also the widowers. They should eat, have merriment, and feel loved in cash, gifts, and kind. I am not the richest; I give according to my capacity." "Before Ezeship, I was usually inspired to provide for about 20-30 widows and widowers as much as I could in a year, but after enthronement, I added more persons from the community, amounting to over 150 widows and widowers." "When the time comes, I will write a book on the story of my life. Again, I am not soliciting funds from the public to advance the course of my foundation, but anyone who seems it fit to be part of my course can partner willingly with Eze Okpoko Chika Nwokedi Foundation." For Christmas, Eze Okpoko advised travelers to ensure safety, as he warns those who have ill intentions for Christmas celebrations against their family members or friends to desist from their plans; otherwise, they will be consumed by the pit they have dug for others. A guest in attendance Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, founder of the Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation (Voice of the Voiceless Media), expressed his admiration for Eze Chika Nwokedi. He said the act of showing magnanimity to widows, widowers, and the less privileged is worth emulating. Eze Chika, he says, is a mentor respected for his actions, especially his charitable act; moreover, the exercise witnessed is a challenge to everybody, for there are more blessings in giving. Iche mentioned that Eze Chika is not the richest, yet he keeps to his promise for the widows yearly; meanwhile, many who are rich would rather allow their food to rot away than distribute quality food to the less privileged. Says Eze Chika is his role model; his charitable prowess encourages us all to put more effort into magnanimity. Widows seize the opportunity of media presence to express their wishes and prayers; some say they have been beneficiaries for many years, while some others mentioned that 2024 will be their first attendance but are happy with the opportunities gained. They were also entertained with good music, food, drinks, and take-home items. Press men were not left out in the end-of-year package as Eze Chika Nwokedi gave food items and gifts as done yearly to appreciate his media friends. Alleged Defamation: Afe Babalola (SAN), as an elder statesman, treated Farotimi with contempt; ridiculed the legal profession—Comrade Prince Saviour Iche By Onome Naomi In reference to the alleged defamation levied against Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) by Lagos-based human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, a human rights advocate, is saying that, legally and otherwise, Nigeria's leaders need to learn how to use their authority wisely. Intimidation may win battles, but it hardly wins wars. In a time where knowledge spreads more quickly than wildfire, exercising restraint is not only a virtue but also a tactic that faults the legal system for overlooking the actions of Afe Babalola for fear of telling him the error of his ways. It will be recalled that the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, after hearing the case between Afe Babalola (SAN) and a Lagos-based human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, over aspects of the 104-page book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice,’ authored by Farotimi, he was charged with a defamation suit against Afe Babalola. Meanwhile, Dele Farotimi was granted bail of N50 million on Monday at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti in the suit filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, against him over alleged cybercrime. Based on a petition written by Babalola, the police arrested Farotimi in Lagos on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, and arraigned him before an Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti last Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, on charges bordering on defaming the elder statesman. Afe Babalola stated in the suit filed at the FCT High Court in Abuja that excerpts from the book portrayed him, the law firm, and its lawyers as unethical, suggesting they were often involved in bribing judges and manipulating the judicial system. The 104-page book accused the law firm of “compromising the integrity of the Supreme Court,” scheming with “crooked lawyers and incompetent justices,” and “doctoring” a Supreme Court judgment. To this effect, Comrade Saviour Iche opined that the bail bond of N50m was constituted exorbitantly to further keep Farotimi in detention. More so, the manner in which Farotimi's arrest was instituted was like apprehending an assassin or a murder syndicate. Babalola says he unintentionally boosted his opponent and exposed himself to public condemnation by using such excessive action against Farotimi. Those in positions of authority, whether in the legal system, government, or interpersonal disputes, need to understand that emotional reactions have the capacity to escalate little conflicts into major conflicts. He further opined that; When a legal behemoth gives up strategy due to emotion, what then happens? Aare Afe Babalola and Dele Farotimi's recent controversy provides important lessons on authority, reputation, and self-control. It is unfortunate that the legal profession that was placed in high esteem is being brought to ashes. Afe Babalola, who is a S.A.N., a legend to aspiring and young lawyers, is beginning to ridicule his achievements so far, subjecting himself to public backlash and further tainting his empire built out of hard work and dedication over the years with this singular case that could have been handled in the most professional and subtle way as legal luminary entails. Instead of establishing authority and safeguarding a reputation, it became a public spectacle. What may have been a minor dispute contained within a few pages of a little-known book abruptly became a topic of discussion around the world. The incident exposed Nigeria's police and judicial systems, and Farotimi's book shot to the top of Amazon's download charts. This was a strategic error as well as a legal goof. Again, a leading figure of Afe Babalola’s law firm has sued Dele Farotimi for N500 million over his alleged defamatory book in a legal effort that also seeks to stop the distribution of the fast-selling book. To what end? Kehinde Ogunwumiju, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and managing partner at Afe Babalola & Co., alleged in his suit that Mr. Farotimi’s book, titled ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,’ is defamatory against the law firm and its lawyers. He stated in the suit filed at the FCT High Court in Abuja that excerpts from the book portrayed him, the law firm, and its lawyers as unethical, suggesting they were often involved in bribing judges and manipulating the judicial system. The 104-page book accused the law firm of “compromising the integrity of the Supreme Court,” scheming with “crooked lawyers and incompetent justices,” and “doctoring” a Supreme Court judgment. It also accused Mr. Babalola of corrupting the Supreme Court in the service of his clients. The words complained of are not only false but also malicious, reckless, and defamatory,” Mr. Ogunwumiju’s suit read in part. All this was done in an attempt to keep Farotimi in detention for a long time; meanwhile, other approaches would have suited the situation better, resulting in a win-win situation. The story would have been quite different if Babalola had discreetly filed his lawsuit in Lagos or Ibadan and let the legal system handle it. His imposing legacy would have remained intact, and the silent grandeur of the elder statesman's deeds may have overshadowed Farotimi's voice. Babalola could have learned from Femi Falana, another prominent figure in Nigerian law. Falana handled the libelous onslaught in the "Falana v. Very Dark Man" case with cool composure and accuracy. He let the judicial system do the talking for him rather than making the issue a public spectacle. Justice was done without needless controversy, and his reputation came out intact. The lesson is obvious: power works best when used subtly and restrainedly in reputational conflicts, particularly when it comes to underdogs. On Farotimi's revelations before his arrest, he was invited to zone 2 command in Lagos, where he's already written countless statements before he was forcefully arrested and his privacy invaded. Afe Babalola, as a legal guru, ought to have filed a lawsuit and allowed Farotimi to appear in court, where he can defend himself. But using underhanded tactics (the use of force by the Nigerian police) is tantamount to intimidation; the once prestigious judiciary system is tainting. Before unprofessionalism came into play, a police officer dared not arrest a lawyer; they would rather invite them respectfully, but now, the reverse is the case. There have been countless scenarios where the police arrest and assault lawyers even in court. This is because the judicial heads have allowed such intimidation. The use of police to arrest your learned colleague is totally wrong. The legal profession that has been held in high regard for decades is being mocked by the very same judiciary system. In today's Nigeria, three judges can give different verdicts on a particular case due to a lack of respect for the judiciary system. It should also be recalled that Farotimi granted a press conference before his arrest. He revealed that some people are trying to punish him for coming out with the truth; what he divulged was similar to what played out in court. He is expected to rot in jail if he is unable to pay the bail bond. Afe Babalola's case with Farotimi is similar to Falana's case with the very dark man. The judge on Afe Babalola's case is acting out the script given to him and also acting on the instructions from above. Ferotimi said in his press conference all that is happening now, and he was right. After Farotimi's arrest, lawyers came out to speak on how wrong Afe Babalola acted against professional ethics. The law profession is no more a serious-minded profession in Nigeria, and the youths are not too pleased about becoming lawyers anymore. Back then, when the Nigerian Bar Association spoke, their words were final, and even Afe Babalola had to succumb because the NBA was the governing power point in the judiciary system, unlike nowadays when politics is being played in the NBA; they no longer have a concrete say on judiciary matters. It is time for a change. Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, chairperson of ASUU NAU UNIZIK, speaks on matters arising from the VCShip crisis and way forward. By Onome Naomi The UNIZIK vice chancellorship crisis had been a bone of contention in the last few months following the appointment orchestrated by the Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor Amb. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, who allotted the vice chancellorship in collaboration with directions from some higher-ups to Dr. Ifeanyi Odoh as against the UNIZIK community preference and selection committee's most worthy candidate; Dr. Ifeanyi was labelled 'unqualified' for the position, leading to the termination of his appointment by the federal government and the repositioning of the acting VC, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, initially displaced. In this regard, the publisher of NationGuardNews, Mr. Fidel Ozugha, had an online interview with Prof. Kingsley Ikechukwu Ubaoji, Professor of Biochemistry and Chairman of ASUU NAU UNIZIK Chapter, on Monday, December 9th, 2024, over matters arising after the UNIZiK VCShip crisis and the way forward. On the UNIZIK vice chancellor saga Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji noted that the crisis leading up to disagreements in the Unizik community stems from the noncompliance of the new governing council appointed by the federal government in taking heed of reservations spotted to have maligned the selection process of vice chancellorship, which is contrary to the level playing ground initially agreed upon, to ensure that everyone will be granted equal opportunity to participate in the screening process, not alienation of MDCAN members as seen thereafter. According to Prof. Kingsley, things to note in the selection process gone south were obvious starting from when the advert for the vice ship reached the public; the signature appended was that of the vice chancellor in place of the acting registrar. The council complained but was ignored; two days after, another advertorial campaign was released, and the council complained about the danger in the first advert, noting three sensitive pieces of information. The variance is imminent if compared with advertorials from other institutions. He went on to say that; "The first discovery is the disparity in the variation in grants: the advert carries a N400 million grant. While it's good to seek a grant, it is also important to consider the present situation in Nigeria and all other factors." "Secondly, the advert describing Dr. Ifeanyi Odoh's qualifications states that he has served 15 years having bagged a post-PhD; this means that having served in that capacity will automatically knock out all professors in the medical sector who have not gotten their PhD; meanwhile, the academic progression in UNIZIK in line with the condition of service recognizes and states that candidates must have a PhD or its equivalent." "Thirdly, there is no administrative experience; this is what is called cognate experience. The moment it was discovered that these three factors were not properly put in perspective, the attention of the council was drawn to the irregularities, but they were not willing to look at it." "Then ASUU held an internal council election, had a senate meeting, and a senate rep in the selection and search team was elected as directed. The senate then disagreed with the council and insisted on a review of the first advert that was published before the selection can go on, but was bluffed. The advert was not reviewed; instead, the council began enlisting their choice of persons and published those names as members of the Senate of the search team and selection committee." "The realization that the situation had gone awry resorted to a court redress. ASUU took the UNIZIK selection council to court while soliciting the support of well-meaning Nigerians. The council had in mind that court verdicts take a long period of 5 to 10 years, and within this period, the rival council can appoint yet another vice chancellor, hence the push to often refer back to the court initially approached for intervention. The intervention of President Tinubu was timely to decipher the situation and ensure a resolution." As regards the current situation of UNIZIK since the resumption of the acting vice chancellor, Prof. Kingsley noted that the present vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, is ensuring that the university community is at peace despite the different opinions raised and the dent in image the school had to face in the last few months. There is a need to recreate the image of the institution by maintaining peace and positive reviews. More so, it should be noted that the image infraction of recent times in UNIZIK does not denote the university's mode of operation or integrity; it is the handiwork of an external force trying to damage the image of the university. The university community is formidable and will ensure unity prevails, he added. He urges the general public to join hands to support the rebuilding of the dented image of UNIZIK, appraised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's intervention. Also advised the opposing sides to see the situation as a win-win for unity will conquer the intrusion of extra forces whose sole aim is to cause division. The university's motto, 'self-reliance,' stands as a watchword in reminder that we need to rely on ourselves to get as far as we can. Note to readers: Prof. Kingsley Ikechukwu Ubaoji is a professor of biochemistry at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and currently the ASUU NAU chairperson of the union. He is a motivational speaker, a youth builder/mentor to many young people, and a lover of equity and fair play. He is a born leader, well published, and has traveled around the world. An advocate of good governance and preaches that until the right thing is done, the things we do not take care of today will torment us tomorrow. The current acting VC in UNIZIK is Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, who was removed from the position by the chairman of the governing council and pro-chancellor, Amb. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe. The Minister of Education dissolved the council and sacked Dr. Bernard Ifeanyichukwu Odoh, who claimed that he is a professor. The registrar of the university was also sacked along. Over 50 trainees graduate from AMPEF's maiden edition of the vocational skill acquisition program. ...as AMPEF also plans to empower outstanding trainees with start-up capital. By Onome Naomi The Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation (AMPEF) trained over 50 participants in a 3-month vocational skill acquisition program where students in participation learned makeup artistry, kneading, handcrafts, wig making, and other skills for free. The outstanding graduating students of the various skills will be empowered with start-up capital to begin trade. The vocational skill acquisition program as orchestrated by AMPEF is meant to help especially students and secondary school leavers be empowered financially in self-dependence as well as help their struggling parents cope with the responsibilities of educational expenses and general welfare. The program, which took place in Ijegun, Lagos State, on Saturday, December 7th, 2024, had lots of activities and entertainment from happy graduands; they entertained the audience with various choreography, exhibitions, narration insights on their vocation of choice, and practical demonstrations of the vocational skill learnt. The master of ceremony, Emmanuel Iche, in expertise, cheered the audience with hilarious jokes powered by entertainment as AMPEF leadership also presented awards to dignitaries and appointed new patrons and matrons. Dignitaries in attendance include Eze (Amb) Dr. Chika Nwokedi (Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo, Chairman, Council of Ndieze Igbo Lagos), his wife, Pst. Mrs. Tessy Chika Nwokedi (Ugoeze of Ijegun Ijeododo, Founder, Fire, Grace and Mercy Restoration Ministry), HRM Nureni Alani Akinremi I, the oba of Ijegun (represented), Vice Chairman of Ndigbo Buru'Otu Association of Nigeria Chief Godwin Ogbuka and wife, Mrs. Ogbuka, Mr. Chinonso Emmanuel, and other executives of Ndigbo Buru'Otu Association of Nigeria; other dignitaries include Apostle Timothy Gbasha, Comrade Adeeko Olusegun (founder, Know Your Rights for Justice), and Comrade Ikechukwu (vice president, AMPEF). Speaking with the founder of AMPEF, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, he revealed to press men that the initiative to empower the youths with skill acquisition came to him as an inspiration, having watched how other children from advanced countries learn skills from their tender ages in a bid to promote self-independence and a quick discovery of their area of specialization. He noted that in Nigeria, the realization of appreciating skill acquisition (vocation) and not only theoretical teachings will go a long way in shaping a child's ability, promoting self-independence, technological know-how, and entrepreneurship from primary to university level. More so, white-collar jobs will not be the most sought after if the kids embrace vocational learning; they can also cater to their aging parents financially. Iche expressed satisfaction over the graduating students' commitment and enthusiasm towards learning. He said initially over 150 students were screened, but 50 of them qualified for the training because AMPEF does not have the capacity to empower the 150 applicants. The 50 participants were chosen based on some certain criteria and were catered for by the organization. AMPEF says it solicits the government's support to enable the organization to accommodate a larger number of interested persons and says the kids are not lazy; all they need is opportunities such as this to harness their potentials. The Special Guest of Honor, Eze (Amb) Dr. Chika C. Nwokedi, Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo, and Patron of AMPEF, expressed positive views over the initiative of AMPEF to train the young ones to be enterprising. He said the foundation's mission to cater to the less privileged by giving them a comfortable environment as home is an applaudable effort, as this shows genuity of purpose. Congratulates the graduating students as he implores them to ensure the continuity of vocational skills learned and be successful, pledges support. Comrade Ikechukwu, the vice president of AMPEF, says the skill acquisition program is about helping the masses and less privileged. Noted that AMPEF has given a voice to the hopeless by helping the children do something lucrative with their holidays, it is paramount that we catch them young to avoid breeding nuisance in the society, he said. Comrade Ikechukwu further stated that the churches and mosques have a role to play; the need to engage the young ones with entrepreneurship programs to create a better society is sacrosanct. He also called on the wealthy in the society, saying all the aforementioned need to put their heads together to sponsor the children on skill acquisition to promote continuity in the growth and development. To encourage the young ones in making an effort to succeed via skill acquisition, they will be needing equipment so that they can earn from what they have learnt, he added. Awardees at the event include the Oba of Ijegun, HRM Oba Nureni Alani Akinremi; Pst. Tessy Chika Nwokedi, Ugoeze of Ijegun Ijeododo, who is the presiding pastor of Fire Grace and Mercy Restoration Ministry Ijegun (was also appointed as AMPEF matron); Chief Godwin Ogbuka (Chairman of the occasion); Chinonso Emmanuel (also appointed as patron of AMPEF); Rev. Dr. Moses Okwuosa; Chukwuebuka Nwagu; Comrade James; and others... Pst Tessy Chika Nwokedi appreciated the awards as she pledged to be a useful tool in enhancing the vision and mission of AMPEF by advisory contributions and participation in their advancement plans. Other awardees also expressed appreciation and promised to show support when needed. The coordinator of the skill acquisition program, Mrs. Mary Cynthia, is gratified by the outcome of the skill acquisition program. She mentioned that the challenges faced during the program are the unavailability of adequate resources in getting raw materials needed for practicals. This was resolved due to the zeal invested in ensuring a safe landing for the trainees. The mission of the skill acquisition program is to imbibe knowledge unto the youths to curb joblessness after finishing tertiary education, she said. Dignitaries at the event commended the graduating trainees for the effort put into learning to get a desired outcome. They especially expressed liking for the needing vocation and advised the AMPEF training coordinators to add more courses for trainees to enable varieties and preferences. Members of Ndi Igbo Buru'Otu Association Win High-End Home Appliances Via Raffle Draw at the Annual End of Year Celebration By Onome Naomi The Ndigbo Buru'Otu Association of Nigeria end-of-year celebration carries a variety of activities for 2024, significantly the raffle draw. Members in participation won high-end items including: a fridge, television, generator, washing machine, gas cookers, fan, gold watches, bags of rice, cartons of noodles, and other mouthwatering prizes via a fair raffle draw. The 9-year-old association, known for its versatility in ensuring that members welfare is topmost in the list of priorities, celebrated the closing of the year on Saturday, December 7th, 2024, with lots of activities like gift sharing and quality prizes, as done every year to appreciate members. The association had, in its 9 years of existence, prioritized supporting the less privileged, widows, and widowers financially as a core mission. During the end-of-year event, the president of the Association, Eze Chika Nwokedi, also presented a N40,000 cash gift to widowed members of the association to support their financial needs for the yuletide season. This charity was also extended to widowers as against societal insinuations, which imply that widows are more needy and should be given utmost preference in financial assistance than the widowers, who are men. The association is making sure that both genders suffering the loss of their partner benefit from the goodwill. The highlight of this year's celebration is the raffle draw event, uniquely and fairly done, as noted by the chairman of the raffle draw committee, Chief Martins Okezie. He said the raffle draw is orchestrated by the association to appreciate the members, enable fair participation and wins, and promote the association positively before the public. Speaking with Eze Chika Nwokedi, the founder of the Ndigbo Buru'Otu Association of Nigeria, he told the press that the raffle draw is very significant during the association's end-of-year program and is done fairly. He said at first, the raffle draw was not appreciated initially by members; hence last year's inclusion of nonmembers, but this year, members showed more interest and went home with good prizes ranging from high-end home appliances to other gift items. Eze Chika Nwokedi talked about the success of the association in the 9 years of its existence. He noted that their personal account presently holds significant figures in almost 100s of millions, which serves as funding for members welfare, including loans for businesses and emergencies and support funds for the less privileged, widows, and widowers. He said loans given to members are without collateral or commission with a favorable repayment period. More so, he said the association only has its secretariat in Lagos but has members in the diaspora. Other privileges of being a member also include financial benefits given to next of kin in the situation of the death of a member, assistance in resolving law enforcement issues (legit issues, not fraudulent ones), payment of hospital bills for a needy member, and the less privileged, who are nonmembers but solicit support. Other activities at the 2024 event include the yearly enthronement of kings and queens of the association, cutting of cake for December celebrants who are members of the association, dances, and others... This year's enthronement of queen goes to Chika Onyegbuchi, a newly confirmed member of the association and an enterprising networker. She says the appointment will enable her to learn and get better, advised members of the association to continually show kindness to people to enhance positive reviews of what the association stands for as she promises to deliver on her newly assumed duty. Winners of this year's raffle draws are Onyeka Okonkwo (won a big 43-inch television), Chukwuemeka Nwagu (won a deep freezer), Somtochukwu Samuel Nwokedi (won a generator set), Abundant Nwokedi (won a bag of rice), Bishop Moses Okwuosa, Chinonso Emmanuel, Chukwuebuka Nwagu, and others with over 50 items won. Isheri Olofin is entitled to a worthy leader for the royal stool - Prince Idris Balogun aka Oluomo Kafata ...Says Ibrahim Olasunkunmi Lawal-Bello is erecting a palace on Balogun family land. By Naomisophyblog The kingship tussle of Isheri Olofin in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State has taken another turn since the emergence and recognition of Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lagos. Some community members faulted the government's recognition, stating that Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa was initially appointed by the Kingmakers after a consensus by the ruling houses. Also, going through the selection process, they suddenly received a rude shock when Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello was recognized as Oba elect by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftain Affairs, contrary to the previous candidate Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa as elected by the Kingmakers for continuous progress and as chosen by the Oracle in affirmation that his reign would bring more prosperity to the kingdom. However, Prince Idris Balogun, fondly called Oluomo, expresses concern over the recognition of Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello as Oba elect, while Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa and Prince Lukman were selected by the kingmakers and chiefs for the royal stool and was subject to final confirmation by the traditional Oracle. Prince Idris Balogun said that the emergence of Prince Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello, who claimed he originated from Olanwa House, is not from Isheri Olofin but rather from a neighboring kingdom, which is contradictory to the customs and beliefs of the people of the Isheri kingdom. He also stated that: "Oluomo of Isheri Olofin kingdom Prince Idris Balogund said kingship in Isheri-Olofin, is by merit, as agreed by the ruling houses' resolve. Kingship is usually appointed to a good candidate who has compassion and leadership traits is accepted by the community. "It will be recalled that the Oba of Isheri Olofin, late Oba Wahab Ayinde Balogun, passed on a few years ago, which requires the community to appoint a replacement for the royal stool under the leadership of a regent before the installation of a new king to serve in continuity after the demise of the previous king.". "Hence, a regent was appointed to supervise the activities of the palace pending the selection of the candidate that will succeed the throne." " Meanwhile, some stakeholders of the kingdom cautioned the kingmakers to be intuitive in the selection of a king, also warned about choosing a questionable character as such persons cannot be appointed to ascend the throne." “Although we were forewarned that someone not worthy will be forced on the king makers to ensure his kingship, we didn't take heed and became utterly surprised when Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello emerged." "We can't allow this happen for it is absurd to commit the custodian of the people to someone with a questionable character, dubious and arrogant; our pride is to see the achievement of our late Oba Wahab Ayinde Balogun continue; to enable Isheri Olofin people enjoy the good work that has been placed on the ground." "After the selection of Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa, he was presented a certificate; we were surprised that the kingmakers bowed to pressure and paraded Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello as the Oba elect. However, the Oluomo of Isheri Olofin kingdom, Hon. Prince Idris Balogun, urges the people of Isheri Olofin kingdom to be calm as he is optimistic the truth will prevail. He further said: "We were confident that Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa will deliver and maintain the good deed of our father. We have duly consulted far and wide, as we found out he is the man that is fit to lead our people and sustain the stride of our late father, he said. "Traditional rites were performed on Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa, which was respectively to usher the new Oba elect into the stool of his father; the state government was supposed to hand over the status of authority to Prince Akeem Akanji Ogundeyi Ayesanmi Olanwa." " Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello created issues to enable him sit on the Royal Stool of Isheri Olofin Kingdom. He came to our community, causing problems and also trying to tarnish my image and destroy my reputation in the community. I decided to be silent because I cannot be seen being confrontational." " He undermines my father, late Oba Wahab Ayinde Balogun, and all the effort of my father in the community including the impact my father orchestrated which has contributed to the development of the kingdom." " Additionally, he condemns the effort of my father, calling the late monarch unprintable names. Also, he wants to rob me in the mud, but I cautioned myself. He is not a member of our community; we are suspecting his ancestry to originate from the Aroworatira family in Idimu. The late imam of the Idimu family from our investigation." " Furthermore, this Ibrahim has questionable character; anyone with questionable character cannot ascend the throne. The community is aware that Ibrahim Olasunkunmi Lawal Bello has a questionable character but has failed to acknowledge it. The truth will be exposed soon." " Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal Bello has been attacking me yet telling people the opposite. He made grievous allegations against me, accused me of sending an assassin after him, something I don't even know about. He is just dragging me into unfounded issues and i have been silent because I want peace in our community." " Prince Hakeem Ogundeyi is best suited for the stool given his wealth of experience. But the challenges he's faced is the government's approval of Ibrahim despite what the oracle has revealed. Ibrahim is creating problems by assuming kingship irrespective of what needs to be done before acceptance. He is not qualified to become the Oba of the Isheri Olofin kingdom. "Basically, he has questionable characters. All the members of the ruling family he claimed he belonged to all denied him. The family head of Olawan Alhaji (Pà) Adebiyi stated that he is not their choice of candidate. When they consulted the Oracle, it was not in favor of him. The Oracle picked Lukman Adebiyi and Akeem Ogundeyi. After consulting the oracle, it revealed that the reign would be unproductive and there will be issues; Prince Ogundeji would be productive while chaos and uncertainty will characterize Lawal Bello's reign. The community will not be settled and will be destabilized under his reign; that is why, the sole reason we are not supporting him to reign as king." " I, Prince Idris Balogun, will not sit with folded hands and watch my father's years of labor and dedication come to an end. He is not related in any way to our ancestry neither are we related to his. Balogun has vast lands in Isheri Olofin; there is no portion of land that belongs to a family called Lawal Bello in Isheri Olofin. Other families have lands; Agbogunloko has land in Isheri, Adebiyi, Ogundeyi, and Olowu has too , but Lawal Bello doesn't have any land in Isheri Olofin. How can you become Oba of Isheri Olofin when your ancestry does not have a root in Isheri Olofin? Where his family has land is Ejigbo-Akeke, not in Isheri Olofin." "The land I am in control of belongs to my forefathers. I have a right to it. I have a right to any land owned by my family. What we inherited from our ancestors is what we are claiming; that is why I am in control of that land." " He doesn't have any family land in Isheri Olofin. He said my father controlled the land, and I am now in control of the land. At least, his family should also own landed properties for him to control, not interfering with someone else's family land." " He should stop contradicting issues. Since we do not share same land and same boundaries why then is he formenting trouble? He is building his palace on the Balogun family land (the Yusuf portion of the land). He has forcefully encroached on the Balogun family land without consulting the owners." " Let it be known that I will retrieve my family land. Everyone knows about the history of the Balogun family and how we played a vital role in the development of the kingdom historically." " Lawal Bello does not have a history in Isheri Olofin. He is getting support from the almighty government, and our kingmakers should be aware that they do not need to bow to pressure. The royal stool he is fighting for does not belong to him. Their family is entitled to being chief imam; you can't be chief imam and want to be a king." "The ruling families of Isheri Olofin knows themselves. All the lineage of kingship knows the processes involved. His elder brother has occupied the chief imam position as it should be, yet the younger brother still wants to position self as king, that's impossible . My challenge is you have a questionable character, and in our kingdom we have a regulation that people with questionable character cannot ascend the royal stool." Over 20 motor bike operators in Ijegun chant praises in excitement as Eze Chika Nwokedi provides means for free fuel. .....Igbo leaders in Lagos attend a peacekeeping meeting with the Lagos Commissioner of Police. By Onome Naomi Motor bike operators popularly called Okada riders in Ijegun in excitement chant praises and prayers for Eze Chika Nwokedi Ezendigbo Ijegun Ijeododo as he blesses over 20 of them with N5000 fuel for their daily trips on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024. A roasted plantain seller also got an N20,000 cash gift to enhance her business. Eze Chika has done this for them on multiple occasions, according to the motor bike operators who were amazed by their miraculous gain. They attested that he is the only traditional leader in Ijegun who cares about the needs of his community, particularly in these difficult times, and for that reason, he is highly respected. A correspondent from Naomisophyblog who witnessed the magnanimous exercise conducted by Eze Chika Nwokedi noted that a piece of paper more like a ticket was given to more than 20 Okada riders to get free fuel worth N5000 from a neighboring filling station. More also, some persons with gallons at the filling station who had come to buy fuel ordinarily also got free fuel; the motor bike operators task force, popularly known as 'agbero,' benefitted, including a woman who sells roasted plantain around the roadside; she got N20,000 as goodwill from Eze Chika. Also, information has it that a woman who sells groundnuts in Ijegun recently got cash gift of N50,000 from Eze Chika to enhance her business, as told to our correspondent by some community persons. See video below; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ApsMY6S-Sw?si=iEv9shEiCCvL4buZ Eze Chika Nwokedi claims he has replicated the act of giving financial support to Okada riders and others who approached him for help multiple times without making an announcement or drawing attention from the media because it's an act he does willingly and freely. He stated that he never defies that giving tendency and always feels content and joyful afterwards. He said that the act of giving comes to him as a direction and inspiration, especially when his heart is troubled to do so. He added that he finds some inner peace and contentment in helping the less fortunate through charitable giving. He reiterated that he is offering charitable aid because of the immense suffering afflicting the country, Okada riders have families that they are unable to adequately feed or provide for; therefore, it is worthwhile to give free fuel to create at least a three-day relief support. They can work three days at their convenience and make twice as much money. Eze Chika said his actions are not done out of abundance but out of little; affirmed he's witnessed several situations where an okada rider can only afford N1000 fuel at a time, then run along to scout for passengers under the heat of the sun; the feeling of gratitude the okada riders and those in need had expressed will spur him to do more, he added. Meanwhile, the Okada riders who noticed media presence at the filling station expressed their gratitude and prayers; they emphasized that other leaders should emulate this kind gesture towards them, not look down on them like trash. Extra: Igbo leaders in Lagos attend a peacekeeping meeting with Lagos Commissioner of Police CP Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale, psc+. The CP emphasized the need to maintain peace and orderliness in the upcoming yuletide celebrations. Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Micheal Adikwu, gives a fill-in on why Nigerian universities are not ranked among the top 10 in Africa. .....emphasizes the need for practical learning. By Onome Naomi In an interview with former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Micheal U. Adikwu, the interviewer asked many eye-opening questions concerning situations arising from the university education setting in Nigeria in a bid to address the laxity found in the educational system. The interviewer, who is the publisher of NationGuardNews, Mr. Fidel Ozugha, emphasized the issue at stake in the university education in Nigeria and Africa with a focus on why Nigeria is not among the top 10 universities in Africa yet has 274 recognized universities that are doing really well with impartation and infrastructure. In response, Prof. Michael Adikwu said: "There are a lot of factors involved, the first being that those rankings may have been done in a biased format to favor their allied countries; the ranking is done outside Nigeria, which enables the room for a biased pick." "Secondly, there are too many universities in Nigeria at present, and many of these universities are underdeveloped. People talk all the time of the falling standards of education, and this is so due to an explosive rate of growth outside the country, and Nigerians are not matching up." "In the 70's/80's, the lifespan of knowledge was about 10-20 years, but today it is less than 3 years before something new comes to replace previous knowledge. The scientific world is fast evolving, and while the Asians, for instance, are quick to catch up, the same cannot be said for Nigeria. We need to move fast if we are to catch up with the rest of the world." The interviewer then asked what Nigerians must do to move fast in technology and sciences like the rest of the world. Has funding problems, corruption, or administrative and management problems slowed down Nigerian universities evolvement? In continued response, Prof. Micheal Adikwu stated that: "There are lots of factors involved. The above aspects mentioned in the question asked may be the least." "When university education began in Nigeria, VCs were picked regardless of ethnicity. For instance, we once had an Igbo man as Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, late Kenneth Dike. We also had an Igbo man as Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Henry Njoku, but nowadays VCs are picked from the local community. The governing councils, regardless of qualifications, will appoint a vice chancellor as long as he/she is an indigene. I have heard about a federal university in the east where 99 percent of the staff are from that state, yet we call such a university a federal university. Where is the federal character?" "The second issue of concern is that theoretical knowledge is gradually degenerating globally. To supplement the gradually degenerating education, some countries have put in place postdoctoral research. What this means is that knowledge is tapped from all over the world; the researchers then use the global knowledge gained to develop their country of residence. "Now, the postdoctoral research has enabled the use of foreign knowledge not depending on local knowledge alone. Why are we not doing this in Nigeria? We can infuse people from all over the world into our university systems and allow knowledge to flourish." "In 2006, while in Manchester, England, a friend took me to the back area of Old Trafford, which used to be an industrial complex. As little interest was being shown by their locals in science, scientists were outsourced from other countries." "When you see European countries advertising for scholarship considerations, it is not for the benefit of third world countries per se. They need our students to come over there and make use of their facilities, as it will be beneficial to them in the future. It is a norm that most people who travel to Europe to school will prefer to stay there after schooling and end up contributing to that economy. So you can move from Nigeria to Europe, and whatever knowledge you have is deposited there. Whatever discovery you make is used by the local community. That is the way it is." "As for university funding, Nigerian universities are not able to generate their own funds." This could be a result of the corruption and administrative deficiency you talked about, but what to note specifically is the poor knowledge flow into the Nigerian educational system. "To reconcile the problems of corruption in the country and the university educational system, it is paramount that one's course of study should be utilized rather than go to waste. 99% of Nigerians are not ready to work but want quick gains, while in other countries the amount of work you put in determines your gains. Meanwhile, it should be noted that Nigeria has over 289 solid minerals, and there is a center of excellence for solid minerals research in Kaduna Polytechnic. They've done a wonderful job with such achievement, yet those that are meant to use it are not even aware of its existence." "Talking about communication services, the bandwidth and whatever product comes with it are all foreign origination; what then is your local option? In Nigeria there are a lot of factors affecting our development, but if everybody works hard, things will improve. The fast followers in Asia are working very hard; hence, their products are everywhere. In South Korea, most of the toys you see in our market are made in their secondary and technical schools. The willingness to work is key to development. "Our learning system should advance from theory to project-based learning like other foreign countries; practical learning lasts longer in the memory. Nigerians have to be practically oriented. Let's watch others in established economies and replicate their actions; we should learn to work hard and smart." "Learning practically should start from the kindergarten level, so that when they finish secondary school education and advance into the university level, these practical learnings can help support themselves financially through university." "A recent broadcast online engaged the public on the advantages of private universities; people argued that private universities are awarding so many of their students a first class. My take is that this is not about bagging a first class, but what exactly do you do with your first class achievement? The real issue is not the certificate; can you perform?" In conclusion, Prof. Micheal noted that emphasis should be laid on not just the university but also the primary and secondary education. They should be taught practically (teaching them what they can do with their hands, like tailoring, brick making, planting, etc.), not teaching them nursery rhymes with foreign names. Glamour in Mecvilla Garden on the occasion of its first anniversary and re-launch By Onome Naomi Mecvilla Garden celebrated its first anniversary in style, as the occasion attracted dignitaries and royals from all walks of life to commemorate with the hospitality expert, Eze Nwoye, for a re-launch on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024. Mecvilla is a household name widely known in Ejigbo and its environs. The CEO of Mecvilla, the Bobaselu of Ejigbo, Eze Nwoye, has mastered the art of hospitality and is making waves in the industry. Mecvilla on Saturday had a relaunch, having gone through demolition by the Lagos State Task Force in the past but has been rebuilt; hence the occasion of its first anniversary. At the event, pressmen had a friendly chat with the CEO of Mecvilla Garden, Eze Nwoye, the Bobaselu of Ejigbo. He revealed during the media chat that he has officially handed over Mecvilla Garden to his first son, Uchenna Nwoye, who is a master chef and familiar with the hospitality business. He also noted that Mecvilla's return is remodeled to suit customers needs and has top-notch services similar to your regular 5-star hotel. Eze Nwoye further said: "We are creating awareness for our customers to know that Mackvilla is back. Mecvilla has a familiar landmark, namely 'The Mechanic Village', which affirms that Mecvilla is not a new establishment but has been remodeled uniquely." "Our services include good food, affordable lodging, an event center, drinks of all sorts, entertainment, and dinner. More also, we have a professional chef and qualified staffs who undergo training to give the best services to customers." "Again, Mecvilla can be easily located using Google descriptions, especially for travelers who want to put up in a comfortable environment upon their return to Nigeria. Foreigners can also put up in Mecvilla comfortably, for we ensure the security and safety of our customers." Speaking with Mrs. Chika Nwoye, wife of Eze Nwoye, she added that in the next 5 years, Mecvilla will be competing with 5-star hotels head-on. Says Mecvilla Garden offers comfortability, 24-hour electricity, local and international dishes, and many more services to meet the needs of customers. Naomisophyblog also learned through the new CEO of Mecvilla, Mr. Uchenna Nwoye, that Mecvilla has restructured in the last 3 months since he took over supervisorship. He said that as a professional chef who has other engagements, he's inclined to take over his father's hospitality business (Mecvilla Garden) to create the necessary changes needed for growth and development. Also, the anniversary is meant to stamp Mecvilla's presence in the community and let the people know that they can get the best services. Uchenna noted that in these 3 months, he's observed, learned, and changed certain things to give room for improvements as seen so far. He says it is of importance that customers get good customer service and are happy to return in assurance that they are prioritized; a happy customer aids growth in business. Uchenna recounted the challenges hospitality businesses face, including shortages of electricity and bad road networks, but Mecvilla, in its capacity, is making sure that none of those factors deter customers' interest in patronizing Mecvilla Gardens. In the next five years, Uchenna hopes Mecvilla Garden will experience significant growth, consistency, and continued comfortability for customers. He added that Mecvilla staffs are well trained, the menu list is according to customers' needs, and it is excellent. The food is handled by professional chefs, the hotel rooms are all new and well maintained with the necessary facilities, there is provision for stable electricity, and the drinks are fairly cold. Eze Nwoye also used the medium of Mecvilla's re-launch to urge Nigeria's respected leaders to create employment opportunities for the unemployed Nigerian youths to enable these youths to stay away from shady dealings and embrace fruitful ventures. He also noted that as a leader, he's committed to enhancing the youths by creating employment for them and should be emulated by other leaders. Dignitaries who attended Mecvilla's re-launch include: Eze Steve Dike, Obindigbo Ejigbo Council of Chiefs and Elders in Ejigbo (both men and women), Igwe Livinus Ezenwa of Umuomaku, Eze Peter C Umeh Mushin, CMO President Emiretus, his executives, Chief Obi Okonkwo and friends, Christian fathers of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church Okeafa, CWO members of Catholic Church Okeafa, Aceland Royal Garden and Mecvilla Executive Garden customers, members of Uga residents in Ejigbo and Environ, friends, and well wishes from far and near. 'Return to the original mission of LASEC; make the leadership seat less attractive to end feud' - Eze Chika tells Ladipo market leadership, sue for peace By Onome Naomi In recent times, there have been rumors circulating in the public space on reasons for endless feud amongst those occupying leadership positions in Ladipo. Situations that ensued during the last election held early in November 2024 at the Ladipo market between units, namely 'Aguyi Ironsi Market, further fueled the already brewing internal crisis in the Ladipo Central Executive Auto Dealers Association (LASEC). To this effect, Eze Chika Nwokedi is saying that the leadership of LASEC has almost totally deviated from the mission and purpose for the formation of LASEC, hence the issues at hand. He further explained that the leadership seat is very attractive in recent times due to the levies created to generate revenue, making the leadership seat a contending position to enrich pockets while he sues for peace. Eze Chika made reference to the early times when he was president of Ladipo; he said LASEC was formed by him and two others, namely Mackerson and Emma 80, between 1993 and 1996 with the sole aim of dispute resolution, to maintain peace and orderliness, and to secure people's goods and properties in the market, not to levy those who have come to buy spare parts or levy hawkers and roadside sellers in the market. The purpose and mission for LASEC have been totally ignored; aspirants contending for leadership positions are more concerned about benefiting from the various levies, which has further made a mess of the ongoing situation. The seat of power in Ladipo is fast becoming a do-or-die affair and must be shunned. He further stated that: "In situations such as this, to quell the already brewing internal crisis in LASEC, the overall leadership of Ladipo should invite stakeholders who are past leaders of the market to address the issue for an amicable resolution." "Some of the founding fathers of LASEC are still very much alive; the now leadership of Ladipo should sort the former leadership to intervene; the resolution of the crisis lies in the hands of the overall leadership in Ladipo. Although in the last five years, those at the helm of affairs have been a bit high-handed to seek advice from critical stakeholders of the Ladipo market, hence the amassing feud." "When we formed LASEC, we didn't task traders with levies for parking spaces, hawkers, or any form of special table levy. We generate funds by collecting security fees from every unit in Ladipo just twice a year; the first fee comes in June while the second comes in November. During those times, we had more than 30 securities personnel overseeing security in Ladipo. We don't task unnecessarily for people's parking space, or impose a levy for a just-brought-in Tokunbo car parked in the market, or a just-brought-in spare part, and so many other unreasonable levies that seem like extortion." "We do not exert force on people owing levies because we made it a considerable and easy amount to pay; these levies being tasked on traders is so wrong. The money generated has led to greed, attracting contenders who intend to enrich themselves, considering the huge amount made daily from these extortions. These situations never happened in the past; it was more of dedication to work." "The leadership position should be considered a turn-by-turn position. I advise that the new leadership should maintain peace. Ladipo cannot stop for any man; the market will continue to exist. When a tenure ends, a new leader must emerge and take over. Back then, if you are not the chairman of your unit, you cannot be the president of Ladipo or vice president, but all that has changed and abolished, hence the emergence of tyrants vying for the presidency, hence the conflicts.". "I am appealing to the new leaders of LASEC to call on the stakeholders and fathers of the market who understand how LASEC works; let's sort out these issues on a round table to maintain peace; if I'm ever called upon, I will concur." More also, during the emancipation of LASEC, there was no intention of making it a means for extortion as written in the purpose when registrated under the CAC Act. The latest development is conflicting as against LASEC purpose, which could be indicting as tyrants have taken over the leadership market space. The leadership of LASEC should make reference to its original purpose and invite critical stakeholders if need be to quell the crisis therein. Lagos 2025 Budget Scales Second Reading - Speaker gives committee 1 month to report back By Naomisophyblog The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday debated the 2025 appropriation bill of N3.005 trillion presented to the lawmakers by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the plenary, committed the bill to a joint committee on appropriation and finance for review with a mandate to report back in one month. Earlier, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Sa'ad Olumoh, provided an overview of the proposed spending with a breakdown of items in the estimate. While raising concerns over the projection of N408 billion deficit financing in the budget, Olumoh, who noted that loans are good when used for the actual purposes, added: "We have to be cautious about it. We need to have a sustainable and pragmatic way of financing our budget so that we don't rely solely on loans. "So I would suggest that we look at a realistic budget and ways to finance it using alternatives like the Public Private Partnership models. "I also want to implore my colleagues that for the purpose of the 2025 budget, we need to properly scrutinise it to prevent wastage." He commended the government for its intentions as stipulated in the budget estimate. Deputy Majority Leader Adedamola Richard Kasumu called for a careful review of the budget to enable comparative analysis and feasibility. Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) noted the absence of allocations for electricity infrastructure and climate change initiatives while suggesting a five-year retrospective analysis of deficit funding. His colleague, Hon. Femi Sheed, stressed the importance of linking borrowing to critical infrastructure like electricity while ensuring revenue efficiency and addressing potential financial leakages. On his part, Hon. Desmond Elliot highlighted the omission of food security measures in the proposal while urging the inclusion of initiatives to meet citizens’ needs. Recall that Governor Sanwo-Olu told the lawmakers that the budget aims to achieve a 59% capital expenditure and 41% recurrent expenditure ratio with a deficit financing to be sourced through external and internal loans and bonds. Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly related this report to the press on Monday November 25th, 2024. To spur the participating students to put in their best effort, Toreeba Ahmed, the overall champion for UCMAS during its maiden edition who attended the event, attested to how UCMAS has helped her through her primary and secondary school. UCMAS originated from Asia, has its African headquarters in Ghana, and can be found in over 8 countries in Africa and 89 countries worldwide, as revealed by the country director, Mr. Steven Ofori. He also stated that the UCMAS program has a reasonable number of sign-ups from Nigeria and in the 2024 competition. Steve Ofori told Naomisophyblog during an interview that the main objective of UCMAS in Nigeria is to enable students to participate and elevate their academic performance. He says due to the downtime experienced by Nigerians, the turnout of participating students accompanied by their parents and observers for the 2024 competition is lesser than previous years. However, the brain development program has continuity and is helping children from 5 years to stimulate and challenge the brain to build capacity. Steve further stated that the two vital steps of stimulation and challenge of a child's brain capacity are created using numbers. These methods by UCMAS teach the children about concentration, memorizing skills, reading skills, speed, and accuracy skills, as seen during the competition where a 5 to 6-year-old child solves close to 50 questions in a few seconds; this involves a certain amount of training to get to that specific speed level. The UCMAS country director also enlightened the public on developing a child's cognitive ability rather than depend on technology (the use of AI); the AI might serve as a supporting tool but should not replace a child's intelligence. It is paramount to instill confidence in a child in the assertion that losing today means he/she has to work harder to win another day, he said. Steve also mentioned that UCMAS is actively operating in 6 states and has area managers and coordinators while working to extend its network all over 36 states of the federation in the near future. Meanwhile, the essence of the UCMAS training is to equip the Nigerian child to solve Nigeria's problem tomorrow. The learning areas focus on mathematics and science. Urges the federal government to support the UCMAS initiative in Nigeria to enable public schools to benefit. Naomisophyblog learned the UCMAS has 'physical and online classes' as well as an application on Google Play store. Students can also connect to the online class on ucmas.com or join UCMAS Nigeria on diverse social media platforms to keep updated with activities and connect with the board. At the end of the competition, winners from the various categories emerged and are awarded with trophies and medals based on their performance in the listening calculation round. Category A Champion is Yoloye Morire from All Joy School, Oyo State, and the 1st placing is Abiodun Alo Damilola from Maryhill Convent School; Category B Champion is Bishi Laylah from Corona School, Gbagada Center, Lagos, and the 1st placing is Teran Lawrence from Louisville School in Oyo State; Category C Champion is Zibah Umar from Gopherwood School; and the 1st placing is Bernard Deborah from Gopherwood School; Category D winner is Olanna Nwaokoro from Gopherwood Lagos and the 1st placing is Musa Dabira from Gemseed Academy Lagos; Category E Winner is Oluwalanke Enoch from Gopherwood School, while the 1st placing is Osaite Daniel from Bodija Center, Oyo State. Speaking with some school representatives who attended the UCMAS competition, Mrs. Mary Ohagwuasi, the CEO of Gemseed Children Academy in Gbagada, affirmed the positive impact the UCMAS program has created and how she keyed into their mission to help her wards since its launch into the Nigerian space. She said the UCMAS tools and mathematical impartation have helped children who have problems with numbers due to lack of concentration and improved their brain capacity. She added that UCMAS is a concept that helps with concentration and coordination; attested she's seen children transit from secondary school to the university via the UCMAS concept using the UCMAS structure, which is commendable. In appraisal, Mrs. Mary noted that the UCMAS tool is very useful, especially to the young ones. She says it's a good start for children from creche to enhance confidence and excellence as they grow in age educationally. Mrs. Oloyele Okundayo, the school head teacher of Unity Foundation School Ogun State, emphasized that UCMAS helps the children's cognitive thinking and builds their confidence, analytical skills, and mathematical skills. Also, UCMAS teaching and tasks help build the children's self-esteem and smartness; she recommends that children from all over Nigeria should be a part of the UCMAS community and says it's a globally accepted initiative. Note to readers: *UCMAS has its African headquarters in Ghana and was launched there in September 2007. *UCMAS was launched in Nigeria in 2015. * Its country director in Nigeria is Steve Okorie, while the technical head for UCMAS Nigeria is John Kwabu. Breaking: Speaker Obasa Clarifies Negative Perceptions As Sanwo-Olu Presents 2025 Budget - says lawmakers united to meet yearnings of Lagosians - accuses detractors of peddling news of alleged governorship ambition By Naomisophyblog Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Thursday said he had not given a serious thought about becoming the next governor of the state as was already being speculated. Dr. Obasa said his major concern has been to strengthen the party in the state adding that this is why he continues to minimise more people to support the party at all times, an act which has been misconstrued by 'political detractors' to mean that he was chasing a governorship ambition. The Speaker said this in his remarks shortly after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the state's 2025 budget size of N3,005,935,198,401. Earlier, a vote of confidence was passed on the Speaker by all the lawmakers present at plenary. Sanwo-Olu had said the budget comprised a total revenue of N2,597,034,000,000 and a deficit financing of N408,902,000,000. The 'Budget of Sustainability' which is made of a recurrent expenditure of N1.239 trillion (41%) and capital expenditure of N1.766 trillion (59%), is also to be sourced from a total revenue of N1,970,897,000,000 and total Federal transfers N626,137,000,000. Reacting, Speaker Obasa noted that the budget was presented at a time complaints by Nigerians about the economy. He, however, appealed to Nigerians to be hopeful as President Bola Tinubu's administration works to ensure the nation's economic recovery. He added: "I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which has been misconstrued by some political detractors as being a selfish aspiration on the ground for me to become governor of the state. There is the need, however, to correct this wrong impression. My concern is about building our party, and whatever we do is mainly for this cause. "To the blackmailers who have embarked on the mission to distort and redefine our mission, let me state it unequivocally here, our intention is to promote our party on the platform of Mandate. "Also, becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run; whereas, those who have been before me are not better of." Read the Speaker's full remarks below: Distinguished guests, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to yet another budget presentation by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. Today marks another significant milestone for our dear State in the pursuit and realisation of remarkable economic transformation, infrastructural renewal and development towards a greater Lagos. The Y2025 budget proposal themed “Budget of Sustainability”, which is above the N 2.3 trillion presented by Mr Governor last year, is a confirmation of our commitment to sustainable development and economic growth. 2. Ladies and gentlemen, This presentation is coming at a time when we all face the reality of daunting economic challenges. We recognise the current economic upheaval, but we are confident that our strategic plans will stimulate growth, attract investments, and improve the standard of living for all Lagosians. Also, the renewed hope of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is focused on the futuristic plan for the nation's economic recovery, which is indeed certain and realisable. As such, I appeal to our people to keep the hope alive. There is, no doubt, a light at the end of the tunnel for us as a nation! 3. Esteemed guests, It is on the record that this honourable House has always been in support of the present administration, particularly the Governor in everything. There has never been a request from Mr Governor that this House has ever denied. 4. That being said, it is necessary to harp on the fact that under democracy, this arm of government remains independent. This House, of course, recognizes this and will always be so, even though we work hand-in-hand with other arms of government. It is also important to state here that this House is a sanctuary and temple, just like every other temple anywhere where we all worship. No one will violate any temple and expect the gods to accept his or her sacrifice. And if such happens, there must be an appease to the gods to accept such atonement. No amount of intimidation or coercing will disintegrate or change the belief of all the members of this institution! 5. Today, we want to assure Mr Governor that this honourable House will look at the budget and do the necessary scrutiny as usual. But it should be noted that this institution remains resolute. We will never be disgraced, abused or ridiculed in the name of creating a seamless working ambiance. 6. Let me also emphasise that those who live in glass houses must not throw stones as the saying goes. This also brings to my mind, according to our people: eni ba yara logun ngbe. Meaning, the god of iron recognises the swift ones. In other words, those who are facilitating or planning to interfere in this House or destroy the cohesion of this institution should also be prepared for the same fate. 7. Ladies and gentlemen, May I use this medium to sensitise us more on the need to build and sustain our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding our focus for 2027. We need to continue to mobilise people just as I do frequently. I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which has been misconstrued by some political detractors as being a selfish aspiration on the ground for me to become governor of the state. There is the need, however, to correct this wrong impression. My concern is about building our party, and whatever we do is mainly for this cause. 8. To the blackmailers who have embarked on the mission to distort and redefine our mission, let me state it unequivocally here, our intention is to promote our party on the platform of Mandate. Also, becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run; whereas, those who have been before me are not better of. 9. In addition, it is also important to correct the impression from some naysayers who have been insinuating that I made payment to seek for blood relation in Ojo to validate my candidacy to run as governor. Of course, I have never denied the fact that I am OBASA. But rather, I have never claimed to be related to Onikoyi, Oniru, or any of the other popular Lagos families as the case may be. I can indeed never run from the fact that I am related to my Obasa family in Ojo. But I do not need local validity to contest or run. If eventually I am contesting, I will do so from Agege! 10. Nonetheless, we want to thank Mr Governor for doing the needful, constitutionally, by presenting the budget. You can rest assured that this House will also respect its constitutional right to address the budget and get back to you. 11. Distinguished guests, As we hope that the Y2025 Budget will be of great benefit to the people of Lagos State, we, however, appeal to Mr Governor and Lagosians to give us sufficient time to enable the House do a thorough job on a financial document that has great influence on the lives of the people. The Assembly would not delay the passage of the budget, but we will be interested in placing a high premium on the need to ensure that the interests of Lagosians are protected socio-economically and politically. We are your representatives here at the House of Assembly, and we are duty bound to do justice to every sector of the state’s economy. 12. At the same time, I want to thank my colleagues for standing on the side of the people at all times. I appreciate your efforts, I cherish your support, which has always been an inspiration and source of strength for me. I commend your courage and perseverance. We will remain united, focused and determined until our expectations are realised. 13. My sincere commendation also goes to the Clerk of the House and the entire staff and management for performing their responsibilities with a sense of patriotism and loyalty. I thank everybody here in this hallowed chamber and all Lagosians for your support and resilience and we appreciate the fact that you are not giving up on us. We will not let you down. We will take you to the promised land: it is a mandate we cannot but fulfil. Once again, I thank you all for coming and wish us a fruitful Y2025. Thanks for your listening pleasure. UNIZIK VCship: 'You can't usurp court powers in my appointment', Dr. Ifeanyi Odoh responds to the Minister of Education. By Naomisophyblog A recent letter from the Federal Ministry of Education alleging the dissolution of its Governing Council and the dismissal of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Benard Odoh, has drawn criticism from Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), located in Awka. The Ministry's Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, signed the letter, which stated that the decision was made due to alleged violations of university rules and disobedience to instructions. According to the Ministry, stress and an institution-wide collapse resulted from the Governing Council's appointment of an unfit Vice-Chancellor. In response to the aforementioned, Charles Otu, the beleaguered Vice-Chancellor's Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity, responded in-depth on November 20, 2024, characterizing the Ministry's activities as a "mischievous" attempt to undermine the university and a grievous attempt to set the institution on fire. However, Odoh claims that the said letter is contemptuous given that its subject matter is under judicial review: "Incidentally, the Ministry of Education is a party in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/383/2024 and also in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/372/2024 where the legality or otherwise of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Council was submitted to the National Industrial Court to determine, and the Court is yet to make a pronouncement. "This notwithstanding, the Ministry of Education, without iota of respect to the Court, proceeded and passed its judgment. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is a defendant in the above suits with no counterclaim. This is unprecedented. The vice chancellor, Odoh, however, stated as follows: "Has there been any crises needless to allude to 'breakdown of law and order' in the institution since the subsequent inauguration into office of the Seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University? "The simple answer is that the Awka temple of knowledge, just like its sister campuses, has been very calm and peaceful, and the Vice-Chancellor has been discharging his duties effectively without rancor. It can even be safe to conclude that the Ministry, ostensibly working for some fifth columnists, may want to ignite or spark crises with its highly dictatorial treatise. "Again, for the second time in less than three weeks, the Ministry of Education violated the extant provisions of the University's Act by announcing for the second time a purported removal from office of the Seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university, which we still insist it has no powers to do, not especially when parties are already in the various Courts of Law. "Top among the many other flaws in the purported'sack letter' is the fact that even the Council's Chairman, who was duly appointed with a letter, has not been officially or formally communicated about this purported dissolution. "Already, the greatest question mark on the integrity of the purported letter is the fact that it never emanated from the President or Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation who issued the council members with appointment letters. "It was rather strangely endorsed, not by a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry perhaps on behalf of the Honourable Minister but by a Public Relations Director. This obviously casts strong doubts on the genuineness and intent of the said letter. "We would wish to maintain that hence parties have remained in court; let the issues be expeditiously tested and established by the relevant provisions of our laws," he stressed. He, however, called on the general public, particularly members of the university community, to go about their lawful and legitimate businesses and also urged them to as well maintain peace and order in the area. It further criticized the absence of formal communication with the Governing Council’s chairman, Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe. The university urged the public and its community to remain calm, insisting that the courts should determine the legality of the actions taken by the Ministry. “Let peace continue to reign supreme in our revered citadel of learning,” the statement concluded. The university reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and called for an expedited resolution of the matter through judicial processes. Human Rights Activist, Comrade Prince Saviour Iche urges Femi Falana SAN to withdraw defamation case against VDM; says it's a fight between David and Goliath By Onome Naomi Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, a human rights activist, is calling out to Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana, to withdraw the case against Martin Vincent Otse, aka 'Very Dark Man', following his attendance in court on Thursday, November 14, 2024. He described the case between the very dark man and Femi Falana as a fight between David and Goliath as represented in the Bible. Comrade Iche noted that he witnessed the loud ovation VDM got before and after his appearance in court. Says fans came in their numerous numbers to support VDM, not Femi Falana, for the hearing of the case of defamation, which stemmed from a leaked recording stating bribery allegations of some millions involving Femi Falana SAN and the EFCC, given by popular Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky. Comrade Prince Saviour Iche explained that his comparison of the two (Femi Falana and VDM) with the case of David and Goliath stems from what he witnessed in court. He says VDM has a large number of followers and ardent supporters who're ready to back him up over his truth. In other words, it will be shameful if Falana, out of pettiness, loses the case against VDM; Nigerians regard the senior advocate with utmost respect over the years for his fight against the violation of human rights and zero tolerance for crime and corruption. Being fingered in a case such as this is like tainting his name if not properly handled with wisdom and fatherly prowess. Iche further stated that: "It should be recalled that in April, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Bobrisky on six counts of money laundering and naira mutilation. During his trial at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Justice Abimbola Awogboro dismissed the money laundering charges (counts five and six) but sentenced the social media personality to six months in prison for Naira abuse. "However, a little over a month after his release, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, posted a leaked audio recording on Instagram in which Bobrisky narrated the events that transpired during his prison term. "In the audio, Bobrisky can be heard discussing with a friend how EFCC officials allegedly extorted N15 million from him to drop the money laundering charges. "However, my issue here is with the voice note released by a very dark man, which has not been proven to be false yet. The only demand made was an apology for defamation by Falana's son, popularly called Falz. "More also, the invitation by the National Assembly handed to both VDM and Bobrisky was only honored by VDM, and nothing was done to chastise the erring other, who was represented by his lawyer, accompanied by flimsy excuses. "It should be noted that the inception of the leaked audio stemmed from a failed contract between the sender of audio and Bobrisky. This led the sender to leak audio to VDM with the intention to expose Bobrisky's atrocities. Again, Bobrisky, having found out the audio has been leaked, immediately settled the aggrieved. This simply means the audio was real, not doctored. "After his non-appearance at the National Assembly upon invitation, Bobrisky was apprehended by the EFCC twice, both at the Nigerian border and airport, even with his disguise, but released thereafter. In the midst of this crisis, the crossdresser has finally left Nigeria for London, having been the reason for the chaos. Iche, in his statement, pleaded with the senior advocate Femi Falana to withdraw the case against Very Dark Man as a father figure revered for his astute policies when it involves human rights matters. Also advises the senior advocate to consider his son's musical career as VDM's fans are threatening to embark on creating storms in Falz's music career to show support for their idol Martins Otse. He added that Femi Falana SAN should secretly call off the case against VDM before the next sitting on January 23rd, 2024, to avoid tainting his reputation. The initiative aims to digitally document Lagos' underrepresented cultural landmarks, festivals, and tourist sites. Dr. Isaac Olatunde, Secretary to the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia Nigeria, opened the session by reaffirming Wikimedia Nigeria's dedication to preserving Lagos' culture and history. Barakat Adegboye, the project's Wikimedian-in-Residence and Webinar host, presented an overview of the Wiki-Imagine Lagos Project. She highlighted the project's mission to document Lagos' tourism assets on Wikipedia, ensuring global accessibility and visibility. She further introduced the "Wiki-Imagine Lagos Writing Contest", encouraging journalists to publish articles in notable media outlets that spotlight Lagos' underrepresented heritage. The contest will run until November 30, 2024; the event organiser will reward the top three publications. The webinar's panel discussion, moderated by Hairat Abdul-Rahmon, featured insights from prominent experts: - Ambassador Olaniyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation, described the initiative as a groundbreaking project documenting Lagos' over 160 tourism assets. He emphasised that over 70% of these resources require media spotlighting, which has reduced their public awareness. The initiative includes embedding QR codes at heritage sites, which links visitors to detailed Wikipedia pages. "This is not just about improving visibility; it's about empowering youth, fostering cultural pride, and amplifying Lagos' global presence," he said. - Pelu Awofeso, CNN/Multichoice African Journalist Awardee, hailed the project as a historic move to showcase Lagos' cultural vibrancy. He emphasised the need to make heritage sites more accessible and better documented. - Okorie Uguru, Publisher of Africa Travel Herald, highlighted the media's critical role in promoting Lagos' tourism and called for digitising archival stories to enrich Lagos' digital presence. - Melvin Iteghete, Information Technologist, praised the project as a transformative model for using technology to bridge tourism gaps and enhance global access to Lagos' cultural sites. - Hon. Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, emphasised journalism's global reach as an invaluable tool for amplifying Lagos' tourism assets. "This partnership with Wikimedia User Group Nigeria ensures that Lagos' cultural heritage is preserved and appreciated worldwide," she said. The Ministry of Tourism has been identifying key tourist sites and installing plaques with historical details, supported by Wikimedia's technological expertise. This collaboration promises to revolutionise how locals and visitors experience Lagos' rich heritage. The session concluded with closing remarks from Barakat, who encouraged attendees to join the contest and contribute to documenting Lagos' cultural treasures on Wikipedia. Governor Hope Uzodinma Behind UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor Crisis as Revealed ...as Governor Uzodinma's Conferment of Professor ship on Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh puts UNIZIK in a state of turmoil By Onome Naomi Following the purported installation of a certain Dr. Bernard Odo as Vice Chancellor by Governor Hope Uzodinma, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, southeast Nigeria, is currently experiencing a crisis. Despite having a doctorate, Odo has not yet been appointed a professor, which automatically disqualifies him from serving as vice chancellor, according to checks conducted by Naomi Sophy Blog. The institution's Academic Staff Union has endorsed DDM's conclusions. Dr Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh went on to say that, Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo State appointed him a professor between 2015 and 2018, in a desperate move to assert himself as the right vice chancellor ship appointee. In a statement signed by the union's chairperson, Professor Kingsley Ubaoji, it was made clear that the vice chancellor should have been appointed in the Hallowed Council Chamber rather than a hotel. It also stated that their agitation stems from their convictions rather than from the fact that he is from Ebonyi State or any of the other stories they made to win over people. Part of the statement showing a pre-planned move reads; The pro-chancellor began working alone without the internal members of the council. Except for the first letter, which he used to remove Prof. Ikechebelu, he harassed the Ag VC and disregarded all of our correspondence with him. Why would he respect our first letter and recognize it while disregarding the est if he is really following the rules? He had a plan to force someone upon us. Even worse, according to the credentials and documentation required to be a university professor, the individual is not a professor. Read full text of the statement: BEFORE IT GETS DARK AT NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY -THE POSITION OF VICE CHANCELLOR OF A UNIVERSITY SHOULD NOT BE A SETTLEMENT FOR A POLITICAL JOBBER An appeal to the President and Visitor to the University to intervene in the brewing crisis in the University by IMMEDIATELY removing Dr Berrnard Odoh, who was recklessly imposed on the University as a Vice Chancellor on Tuesday 29th October 2024 and Amb. Greg Mbadiwe the Chairman of Council, who perpetrated the imposition. ‘Nnamdi Azikiwe University is an institution named after Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the great African scholar, nationalist and irredentist. Given the antecedents of the great Zik of Africa, the University named after him is expected to symbolically stand in the very centre of development in Nigeria and Africa, lead in advancement of academic excellence and impactful community engagement. No wonder the founding fathers choose for the University, the motto discipline, self-reliance and excellence. This motto has continued to set us apart and has remained our constant measure in our drive to be a top-tier institution in Africa renowned for producing globally competitive graduates, and advancing knowledge through research and innovation. On Tuesday 29th October 2024, the Pro-Chancellor and chairman of Council, who had since inception been behaving like a Pharoah, violated the solemnity and sacredness of our institution by fraudulently foisting a non-qualified person, Dr Benard Odoh as its Vice-Chancellor. Apart from Dr Benard Odoh not being qualified and not meeting the eligibility criteria, the Pro-Chancellor, violated, disregarded and undermined the rule of law and recklessly imposed him on the University, above very highly qualified academic giants. FACTS ON DR BENARD ODOH ‘Dr Benard Odoh is a 1999 graduate of Geological Sciences from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. ‘He enrolled for and studied for a Master of Science degree in the same Geological Science Department between October 2004 and January 2006. ‘He again enrolled for a Doctor of Science degree in the same Dept. of Geological Sciences (Applied Geophysics) Department in January 2006 and graduated in August 2008, a period of 2 years. It is still to be understood how he completed the Ph.D. programme in two (2) years given that the duration for a full-time Ph.D. programme in the University is six semesters (which is 3 years). Meanwhile, at the material time, he was a full-time lecturer at Ebonyi State University. This happenstance is a red flag. ‘In 2009, Dr Bernard Odoh was offered an appointment into the Dept. of Applied Geophysics, Faculty of Physical Sciences as a Lecturer I. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer with effect from 1st October 2012. ‘By a letter dated 16th October 2014, Dr Odoh sought and obtained approval to embark on a leave of absence effective 1st November 2014 – 1st March 2015, to contest for the elective position of Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was not successful in his bid for a Senatorial ticket. ‘In May 2015, he was appointed Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government and through a letter dated 29th May 2015 requested and obtained approval for a four-year leave of absence from the University. He remained in that position till April 2018 when he resigned. ‘At the time he was appointed SSG to the Ebonyi State Government, he was a Senior Lecturer. We were therefore surprised that he started using the title of a Professor. ‘In 2019, he contested for the gubernatorial primaries in Ebonyi State under APC still pretending to be a Professor, but lost to Sonni Ogbuoji. ‘Again in 2023, he contested for the governorship of Ebonyi State flying the flag of APGA and lost. ‘Surprisingly he was in 2019 promoted to the rank of a Reader in our University under a very contentious circumstance, which elicited and still elicits controversy from his contemporaries who felt he was unduly favoured as he had not spent the requisite number of years required for the promotion. As a Union we do not have the details of how he was switching his status between political appointment, elective positions and his academic career. The law allows for leave of absence if you have a political appointment. A leave of absence means that your academic career is paused to resume when you return. However, if you are going for an elective position you are expected to resign your appointment with the University. Therefore, that Dr Benard Odoh continues to earn his promotion in the University even while running for elective positions is another red flag, and can only be explained by the past Vice Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone. ‘So in our University now, Dr Benard Odoh is a Reader. Period! Attached as evidence of his current rank is the IPPIS salary payment slip for August 2024 which clearly shows that he is paid as a Reader (See Annexure I). ‘While Dr Benard Odoh has been tamed from officially using the title of a professor in the University’s official documents, he still parades himself as a Professor in his external communications and CV meant for external use. ‘In the University’s Central Information Referencing and Management System (CIRMS) wherein individual staff manage their pages, he wrote that “Prof. Ifeanyi Benard Odoh is a READER in APPLIED GEOPHYSICS Department, Faculty of Physical Sciences in Nnamdi Azikiwe University. ‘It is from his CV we saw that he makes a claim to an appointment as a Visiting Professor of Geophysics at the Federal University, Gusau from July 2015 to October 2017, as well as being the pioneer Head of the Department at the University within the same period. This coincides with the same period he was SSG to the Ebonyi State Government. ‘A reply dated 28th October 2024 from the Registrar, Federal University, Gusau,to a request for disclosure of the academic status of Dr Benard Odoh made by Kingsley Awuka Esq. of Awuka, Okafor & Partners, No 63 Old Onitsha Road, Opp. NAUTH, Nnewi, proved that the above claim is false. Part of the letter from the Registrar which is here exhibited as Annexure II reads: ‘Our records show that Dr Ifeanyi Benard Odoh never(sic) a staff nor a pioneer Head of Department of Geology. Never shown (sic) up in the department or though(sic) any course(s).” The above is a clear disclaimer to Dr Benard Odoh’s claim from the same University. WHAT AN ACADEMIC FRAUD! In a saner clime, this dubious and false claim is enough to expel him from the university. But rather than do that, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe has chosen to promote him to lead one of the finest academy in the country, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, which motto is DISCIPLINE, SELF-RELIANCE & EXCELLENCE, values that are diametrically opposed to what Dr Benard Odoh stands for. But assuming without conceding that Dr Benard Odoh was actually appointed a Visiting Professor, it does not make him a Professor. It needs to be clarified that a Visiting Professor is not a full Professor. A visiting Professor is a temporary academic position that allows you to teach or conduct research at a different institution than your home one.The term “Visiting” means that it is not a permanent position and is not “tenure-track” (it is not earned by promotion). It is a mark of the deepening intellectual crisis in Nigerian Universities that even persons who have never had any academic engagement are offered “visiting Professorship” positions, but it doesn’t make them Professors. The rank of a full professor is a tenure-track position with requisite promotional criteria, and appurtenances of office, and carries additional administrative responsibilities associated with membership on committees that are restricted to full professors like membership of Senate. Dr Benard Odoh is not a member of the University Senate. The Senate records are there for perusal. ‘The gap between a “visiting Professor” and a “Professor” is akin to the one between an “honorary doctorate” degree and an earned “doctorate” degree. ‘It is crystal clear from the above that Dr Benard Odoh is not a Professor and is not therefore qualified by the criteria published to lead our academy. Regrettably, he parades a forged qualification, and a dubious character, not desiring of a true academic...Read concluding part of this report on; https://naomisophyblog.com.ng/governor-hope-uzodinma-behind-unizik-vice-chancellor-crisis-as-revealed/

UNIZIK pro-chancellor faces public backlash over MDCAN, ASUU claims of shady process in the appointment of Dr. Ifeanyi Odoh as Vice chancellor By Onome Naomi Still on the UNIZIK crisis, in an interview aired on the TVC channel on Friday, November 15th, 2024, Fred Nzeakor, a lawyer and public affairs analyst, enlightened the public extensively on why there are controversies surrounding the appointment of Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh as vice chancellor of UNIZIK and the shady process undertaken by Amb Greg Mbadiwe to actualize the process. Fred stated that to become a vice chancellor, you must have been a professor for at least nine years. Normally, the laws of Unizik say ten years, but Dr. Ifeanyi has not attained professorship, nor has he stealthily served in the capacity of his doctorate. To this effect, chairman of the governing council of UNIZIK, Amb Greg Mbadiwe, began a kangaroo arrangement, sidelining those in the medical profession and tailoring the interview to suit a particular individual, hence the crisis began. He said the search for qualified candidates suitable for the vice chancellor ship position was constituted by the Chairman of Council, who single-handedly appointed representatives of the Senate into the Selection Committees for Registrar and Vice Chancellor, respectively. ‘In all these, the Chairman colluded with the other four (4) members of Council appointed to represent several interests to the exclusion of the internal members of Council (i.e., representatives of the Senate and Congregation), whose presence and participation were disregarded. The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) National Executive Council (NEC) due to the recent development had called on the federal government to promptly remove Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe from his role as pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, declaring a 7-day warning strike, effective from tomorrow, Monday, November 18th, 2024. Prior to this warning strike, MDCAN wrote to the Ministry of Education before approaching the court over the discriminatory process effected by Amb. Greg and his cohorts against MDCAN members who are more suitable candidates for vice chancellor ship but disqualified to position Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh as most qualified despite discrepancies in his achievements and certifications. It should be noted that the university council has nothing to do with the decision the pro-chancellor of UNIZIK, Amb Greg Mbadiwe, solely perpetrated. Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh does not meet the criteria for the UNIZIK vice chancellor ship position because he is a reader (an associate professor), and the rules say for you to be a VC, you must be a substantive professor, and he is not. Odoh went on to say Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo State appointed him a professor between 2015 and 2018, just a desperate move to assert himself as the right candidate. Furthermore, the Federal University of Gasau denied Odoh's claims of being made professor and head of the department of geophysics; the university registrar clearly noted upon inquiry that Odoh was accompanied with a letter in July 2024 addressing him as a visiting associate professor; a visiting reader in any university doesn't count due to inassessibility. Only the university Odoh serves can assess him. More also, ASUU and the UNIZIK community are saying that Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh is an imposition of an imposter that has come to perpetrate a hatchet job that might destabilize the 33-year-old prestigious university and will not be tolerated, hence the controversies and ultimatums. Human rights advocate urges elder statesmen, clerics to engage Pres. Tinubu over the state of the nation. By Onome Naomi Human Rights advocate Comrade Prince Saviour Iche is calling on clergymen and elder statesmen to engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a discussion over the long-standing crisis of hardship plaguing the nation from his administration. Elder statesmen in the likes of former president Ibrahim Babangida, Yakubu Gowon, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Gen. Alani Ipoola Akinrinde, Edwin Clark, Pa Adebanjo, Emeka Anyaoku, and other prominent Christian clerics, including Pst Enoch Adeboye, Pastor William Kumuyi, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Pst Paul Adefarasin, Pst Matthew Ashimolowo Primate Ayodele, Pastor Daniel Kayode Olukoya, and Bishop Mike Okonkwo. Muslim clerics—Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar IV, the Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Saleh Al-Husaini, Sheikh Nasir Muhammad Umar Kabara, others—who have turned a blind eye to the critical situation befalling Nigeria should walk away from their shells and come out in their numbers to call President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order. According to Comrade Iche, the aforementioned elder statesmen and clerics have what it takes to call on the president for a reform. He says Nnamdi Azikwe, Pa Enahoro, Obafemi Awolowo, and other prominent heros who fought for Nigeria to achieve independence will be rolling in their graves in disappointment over Nigeria's regressive situation. He further said: "The presidential seat has been a lifetime ambition for President Tinubu, and he's achieved it. It is time for him to prove to Nigerians that he can maintain that seat by making viable changes in the economy to benefit Nigerians, not politicians." "Politicians are appointed to serve judiciously and should not see their appointments as birthright but an assignment that must be conclusive with positive results of attestation and commendation." "Of recent, Emeka Anyaoku, during an interview on the state of the nation, proclaimed that 'Even Angel Gabriel cannot save Nigeria'. Should such a statement utterable by an elder statesman? This simply shows how insensitive our leaders are and how hopeless the nation's situation has become." "The third year of the President Tinubu administration is fast approaching yet no positive changes in the economy; instead, Nigerians have registered more hardship and torment; families can't even feed and clothe properly due to the economic downturn. Iche added that it is time for all elder statesmen and clerics to arise in their numbers and convene a national discussion to address these issues with the president asserting their displeasure. They can also come up with viable solutions if our president is lost on ideas to move the nation forward. MDCAN seeks the dismissal of the UNIZIK Pro-Chancellor; declares a seven-day warning strike if FG fails to comply By Onome Naomi Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council at Nnamdi Azikiwe University The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) National Executive Council (NEC) has called on the federal government to promptly remove Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe from his role as pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, declaring a 7-day warning strike, effective from Monday, November 18, 2024, if the government fails to comply with their demand. In a statement released in Jos following the National Executive Council's (NEC) extraordinary virtual meeting on Monday, November 11, 2024, to discuss the 21-day ultimatum given to the federal government, MDCAN stated that the strike will impact all services provided by its members in all public hospitals and universities in Nigeria. They charged Mbadiwe with disobedience and failing to implement the Ministry of Education's order voiding the university's most recent vice chancellor appointment. The doctors said they were shocked that these appointees were still parading self in the various positions as against the people's objections. In order to address the current shortage of vital personnel for training, research, and healthcare services in the nation, the government has failed to harmonize the retirement age of medical consultants to 70 years, according to the communiqué, which was jointly signed by President Prof. Aminu Mohammad and Secretary Prof. Daiyabu Ibrahim. NEC also expressed disapproval of the government's inability to apply the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), which attempts to address the present disparities in clinical lecturers' pay, entry-level salaries, and member pension contributions, to all Nigerian universities. Additionally, the communiqué urged the federal government to create a comprehensive sample ad for the Vice-Chancellor's position. They contended that Ahmadu Bello University Zaria's recent vice chancellor's ad ought to be used as a model for choosing vice chancellors in the future at universities all over the nation. To guarantee that CONMESS is applicable to all medical and dental officers, the experts also called for the emoluments paid to medical lecturers to be standardized with the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS). The communiqué states that NEC will meet again once the seven-day warning strike notice has passed in order to review the situation and the progress made so that they can decide on the next course of action. It should also be noted that some actors have used some of the Ruzu products to cure prostrate, diabetes, kidney, and liver conditions, amongst other uses. Focusing on why 'Kampe' Organic Herbal Drink is different from its competitors in the market space, Dr. Uzu mentioned that 'Kampe' is locally produced using a popular hot drink namely 'Ogogoro' as its liquid base to extract the nutrients in medicinal plants, potent in treating diverse health issues such as back pain or waist pain, menstrual pain for women, low libido, quick ejaculation, weak erection, erectile dysfunction for men, etc. The Kampe herbal drink also contains an active ingredient, namely chewing stick and 'Osusu' in Yoruba language. Dr. Uzu reveals that the chewing stick herbal plant has solid functions on the male and female reproductive functions. Kampe herbal drink has 30% alcohol; however, consumers may not feel the presence of alcohol due to its originality. 'Kampe' doesn't hurt the chest or make its consumers feel dizzy from drunkenness. Instead, it is formulated to cure drunkenness even with the presence of Ogogo as a liquid base, Dr. Uzu added. However, a survey by Naomisophyblog has shown that its market value is as important as its essence and efficacy. NIDOE elects Councillor Harold Ogunfemi as Chairman, as AGM extends olive branch, ratifies self-exit of recalcitrant members Cyriacus Nnaji The crisis rocking the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE) could be said to have come to an end with the election Saturday night of Councillor Harold Ogunfemi as its new Continental Chairman to pilot the affairs of the Organisation for the next two years. This cherry news emanated from the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Organisation which was held in Athen Greece between November 7 and 10, 2024. Along Councillor Ogunfemi were other nine eminent members to serve in the Central Executive Committee of NIDOE. According to Pastor Peters Osawaru Omoragbon, a member of the NIDOE Project and, Media Committee, in his chat with Television Continental (TVC) immediately after the election said that every two years Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe hold their annual convention to elect new officers. Continuing he made public what transpired at the AGM saying, "I am proud to announce to you that in the last 30 minutes election was concluded and as I speak to you, NIDO Europe has a new Central Executive Council under the leadership of Councillor Harold Ogunfemi, with nine other members of the executive committee, so we are happy." Speaking on the significance of the election, he said "Now what we are trying to achieve is to maintain the constitutionality and the rule of law of the Organisation we represent. We are in Europe, we are in a developed nation and we are supposed to provide leadership and exemplary role model for our brothers in Nigeria. But it is very unfortunate that some of us who came out of Nigeria left Nigeria but the Nigerianess in them has actually not left them. "They don't respect the constitution and the rule of law and that explains the crisis you reported a week or two ago," he said. Omoragbon also espoused on the process leading to the resolution of the crisis that has ridden the Organisation for months. "What happened is that in a group we can never please everybody, some agree with you and some will not, but the final arbiter is the court of law. So when the other group went about illegally and proclaimed themselves as the new leaders of NIDOE, we said, okay, under the leadership of NIDOE and under the UK Company Act 2006, what they did was illegal, so we are the authentic group. "They went to court within this week and they sought two injunctions and one exparte motion to stop this election in Athens, Greece and one of the injunctions on Tuesday Nov 5 2024 was dismissed immediately, and the two other cases were to be heard on Friday, the 8th, to the glory of God, the other case, one of the contestants to the chair withdrew, his name is Hon. Chibuzor, he has to withdraw his case and then the leadership of the other camp in NIDO UKS went to court and the court dismissed their injunction stopping this AGM, and said this AGM can go on," awarding a cost of £1200 in our favour he disclosed. He said with the court backing the AGM, it showed the AGM has the backing of the law. "Of course, you know the meaning of that. If the court of law can recognize and give authenticity to what we are doing here, it is to show that we are the authentic NIDO Europe. We cannot rule out the disaffection of the other group, but if you are in doubt, you go to court, the court settles issues." Omoragbon stated that the new leadership would hit the ground running even as he hinted that the Harold Ogunfemi led NIDOE was set to extend an olive branch to those who feel dissatisfied. "So I am proud to announce to you, as it is right now, we have a new leadership in NIDO Europe and we want to hit the ground running. And of course the new leadership is going to reach out to those who are disgruntled, those who are not happy with an olive branch of peace to them, but then you cannot force relationship but we want to maintain what the rule says, and we will never compromise on the standards and the rule of law as far as NIDO Europe is concerned, that is what we are bringing on board from this AGM." Omoragbon also made it abundantly clear that the legitimate NIDOE did not at any material time suspend some persons rather, a group of members illegally proclaimed themselves as Executive Committee and said they have suspended the legitimate Executive Council. "No they are the ones who claimed to have suspended the authentic leaders, we didn't suspend them; they walked away, and set up a new group for themselves. But we told them that as long as you have the right to belong, you equally can do whatever you want, you don't have the power to suspend a legitimate Executive Council. "I also have to state that part of the resolutions at today's AGM was that the arrowheads who have chosen to walk away from NIDOE, the AGM in Athen Greece has ratified their walkaway, and so from today, they ceased to be members of the Organisation, "But for those who are still prepared to work with the new leadership of NIDO Europe, and have a rethink because a lot of people have been misled into thinking that what these arrowheads were doing was right, if they accept our olive branch, we are ready to work with everybody. Our interest is Homeland Development." On what the leadership of NIDO Europe stands to gain in from this AGM , he said "What many Nigerians believe is that when they have opportunity to lead any organisation, they see it as a ladder to get political recognition back home. I want to let you know that the game plan is 2027, that is why some people want to see how far they can get this power, they want to go to Nigeria and say, yes I represent Nigeria in Diaspora continental Europe, so they want to get that recognition but that is not what we are out for. THAT IS WHY THEY WANT THIS POWER BADLY "We are here for service; we are here to provide intellectual services back home. What we lack in Nigeria is so much, but we have enough resources out here, so what we should do is to see how we can serve, I cannot say why they are doing it, but whatever, it is their agenda we are not moved. Yes we believe if they want to pursue any ambition, it must be done within the ambit of the law, and the constitution of Nigerians in diaspora Europe. That is what we stand for," Omoragbon stated. At the AGM, new members of the Central Executive Council were elected by members of good standing, who participated in the AGM physically in Athens and virtually. It was indeed a new dawn as fresh and young members of the organization form the majority of those elected. The following individuals emerged as elected continental officers: Cllr Harold Ogunfemi (United Kingdom), Chairman; Mr. Michael Otogo (Greece), General Secretary; Mr. Shakiru Oladunjoye (Germany), PRO/Deputy General Secretary; Dr. Alexander Osarogue (Greece), Finance Officer; Prince (Engr) Afolabi Paul Aderemi, Treasurer; Mrs. Chichi Onwugbonu (United Kingdom), Welfare & Social Events Officer; and Mr. Ike Okafor (Austria), EU & other related organizations Liaison Officer. Others are Mr. Fidel O’Neil Wilson (Italy), IT Officer; Mr. Adekunle Ayoola (Poland), Officer without Portfolio – 1; Mr. Olaseni Lawal (Germany), Officer without Portfolio – 2; Additionally, the following persons were co-opted to fill the vacant offices, Prince Chima Ibezim (Italy), Vice Chairman; and Barr. (Mrs.) Ursula Atueyi-Nwosu (Ireland), Legal Adviser. LIFE advocate improved access to justice for vulnerable survivors of GBV in Lagos State By Naomi Onome In a one-day dialogue session on Thursday, November 7th, 2024, the Leadership Initiative for Youth Empowerment (LIFE) advocates a significant change in improving access to justice for vulnerable survivors of gender-based violence in Lagos State. The dialogue session, which registered the attendance of key stakeholders, is aimed at reaching out to the public on how to spot and get help on cases of abuse by contacting the respective agencies in charge of gender-based violence cases. Access to psychosocial support, good health care services, and a justice system for vulnerable survivors is primarily available through these various agencies to ensure the needed support as analyzed by facilitators. According to the 2018 statistics report of the National Demographic Health Survey, 33% of women aged 13–49 in Nigeria have experienced physical or sexual violence; 24% have experienced only physical violence; 2% have experienced only sexual violence; and 7% have experienced both physical and sexual violence. The variation shows that women are more of the sufferers and victims when compared to men who face abuses. It is imperative to note that both genders suffer abuses regardless, but women have more records showing intensity. LIFE's overview of challenges faced by vulnerable survivors of GBV in accessing justice during the one-day of interpersonal communication states that gender-based violence is one of the most widespread human rights abuses but the least addressed in the world and has devastating consequences not only for victims but also for society. Abuses such as physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence can be perpetrated by both genders. Challenges faced by abused survivors may include stigmatization, economic dependence, physical and mental health effects, cultural and religious factors, etc. Joy Sokoya, center manager of Mirabel Centre and a facilitator at the event, commended the initiative by LIFE, which championed the course of bringing together stakeholders, volunteers, and agencies to dialogue on improving access to justice for vulnerable survivors of GBV through sensitization and other services. She noted that the Mirabel Center has been around for over 11 years and has handled situations arising from rape and assault for about 9000 survivors in Lagos State. The Center provides free services to survivors, including mental, psychosocial, and psychomoral support. More also, survivors of rape can get medical support from Mirabel Center for free within 72 hours of the occurrence. Joy during her presentation emphasized that parents need to take cognizance of factors leading to physical and psychological abuse and should be extra vigilant; abuses arising from violence and other factors, she says, are not only a female-centered situation; a male could also be a victim of abuse. However, stigmatization has been a concerning factor; therefore, it is our responsibility as a community to discourage stigmatization, show zero tolerance for abuses, and protect victims of abuses. Implore the support of the Nigerian police to make sure survivors get justice, she added. Omolara Omodupe, a legal representative from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), stated that physical violence could also be verbal, economic, and emotional abuse. She says the Lagos state government has zero tolerance for any form of abuse, and as such, DSVA deals with cases such as rape and defilement, gives shelter for displaced women, children, and the sexually abused, and renders welfare services through OPD (Office of the Public Defender). She charges all to say something when they see unusual situations by placing a call for help on 08000333333. A representative from Ireti Resource gave a short insight on activities rendered by the agency; she said their primary aim is to create a safe space for survivors of GBV. The agency also has an application launched in 2020 in Alimosho named Encare Response App to report GBV cases. The resource center is charged with helping survivors get instant access to justice using their various channels of support. Agency representatives in attendance include: Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mirabel Centre, DSVA, LASCOTA (Oshodi, Isolo, and Ejigbo branches), WRAHP, Police Divisions across the state (Alausa, Ago Okota, Ilasamaja, Itire), Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ireti Resource, others... LIFE program officer Mokwe Oluwatoyin Esther, in summation of the program in its entirety, harnessed that human rights and dignity, health and well-being, justice and accountability, prevention and education, social and economic well-being, gender equality and empowerment, government commitment, and obligations will be derived if there is improved access for GBV survivors in Lagos. It should be noted that improving access for vulnerable survivors of GBV in Lagos is not only a matter of moral imperative but also a crucial step towards building safer, healthier, and more equitable communities for residents. Questions asked by attendees and participants arising from situations in the community based on GBV met responses from various agency representatives, especially the Nigerian Police. The University of Ibadan 2024 SME Fair kick Starts as Entrepreneur and Student Merchant Network for National Development By Primetime Reports The 2024 edition of the University of Ibadan SME Fair has kicked off today at the International Conference Centre of the university. This year’s edition of the SME Fair, with the theme ‘’Moving the Global SME Community Forward through Technology, Innovation, and Creativity,‘’ has in attendance over fifty exhibitors and about 100 student entrepreneurs. The fair is scheduled to hold for two days from November 7th and 8th. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fair, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration, Prof. Peter Olapegba, said, "I am delighted and very pleased to welcome all the participants in the 2024 edition of the University of Ibadan—Small and Medium Enterprises Fair. In line with the university’s mission to the transformation of society through creativity and innovation and with a view to proffering solutions to the challenges relating to SMEs, we have committed ourselves to fostering partnerships with the SMES with zeal and fervor. Studies have shown that SMES, whether in a very developed, high-income, or developing nation, contribute a great deal to economies globally. Over 60% of the GDP and over 70% of the total jobs available in a country like Nigeria can be attributed to SMEs and the informal sectors. The foregoing implies that government at all levels should tap it to the fullest, the multi-dimensional opportunities and the gains inherent in SMES to keep our teeming youth busy and gainfully employed.’’ The Convener of the Fair, Professor Ruth Ochanya Adio-Moses, stated that the University of Ibadan will continue to interface and bring the gown and the town together to work together for national development. She said, ‘’ On behalf of the SME 2024 Committee, I welcome you to this SME Fair, where we celebrate the spirit of small and medium-sized enterprises—the heart and backbone of our economy. Today, we’re here to explore a powerful theme: moving the SME global community forward through technology, innovation, and creativity. In our increasingly interconnected world, the concept of “glocal”—thinking globally while acting locally—has never been more relevant. SMEs have a unique ability to drive change and inspire growth by staying deeply connected to their communities, all while reaching new markets and audiences around the world. But what truly propels this growth? The answer lies in three dynamic forces: technology, innovation, and creativity. Giving the specifics Prof. Adio-Moses said ‘’. First, technology is transforming the way we do business. From e-commerce platforms to digital payment systems, technology is helping SMEs reach wider audiences and streamline operations. Social media and digital marketing give local businesses a global voice, while data enables us to understand our customers more deeply and make smarter decisions. Technology is no longer just a tool—it’s a bridge to global opportunities. Innovation is the next cornerstone of progress. It empowers SMEs to rethink traditional ways of working, to solve problems in unique ways, and to offer products and services that truly meet the evolving needs of their customers. Innovation is what allows small businesses to adapt, to be agile, and to compete with larger enterprises on an equal playing field. It pushes us to move beyond comfort zones and embrace new challenges. And then there’s creativity. In a world where trends change rapidly, creativity is what sets a business apart. It’s what makes a brand memorable, what captures the hearts of customers, and what creates a loyal community. Creativity inspires SMEs to tell their unique stories, to offer personalized experiences, and to build genuine connections that go beyond transactions. Speaking on the importance of the three terms to SMEs and their role in driving economic development, Prof. Adio-Moses said, ‘’ Together, technology, innovation, and creativity are helping SMEs navigate this global landscape. They enable us to stay rooted in our communities, to respect and respond to local needs, while also reaching new heights on a global scale. Today’s SME fair put together by the University of Ibadan and Providus Bank embodies this vision—a gathering of businesses that are thriving in their communities while boldly stepping onto the world stage. As we move forward, let’s continue to embrace these tools, to support one another, and to foster a culture where technology, innovation, and creativity are not just buzzwords but the driving forces of meaningful progress’’. In her welcome address, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation, and Strategic Partnerships, Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose (SAN), whose office is the brain behind the Fair, said, ‘’The university recognizes the impacts of SMES through cutting-edge research and getting SMES the requisite knowledge they need to succeed, especially in these tough times. The university has decided to put in place practically a structure that will bring about collaborations with SMES. This is a deliberate attempt to ensure cooperative research and development and support for SMES. SMES are the backbone of the economies worldwide, especially in growing and developing the countries. SMES make up the majority of businesses worldwide. Here in Nigeria and across the globe, SMES account for the significant portion of employment, driving job creation, innovation, and inclusive growth. It is not an easy journey, and many SMES tend to fold up within five years of operation. This goes to show the level of work and dedication that must go into creating an environment that ensures sustainable growth for our SMEs.’’ Dr. Femi Awoyomi, the founder of African Young Brains, a partner of the university at the fair, was applauded for sponsoring 100 booths for the student entrepreneurs, and he said the need to sponsor them is bore out of his passion and commitment to young people in Africa to start their own businesses and be self-employed as they need supports from everyone. He calls for support for the African Young Brains to continue to do more for the young people of Africa. He said, ‘’The African young brain is committed to identifying and bringing together young people for empowerment for training, networking support, and mentorship to grow their businesses for Africa's development. We are capable of doing more with the support of Nigerians and Africans.'' Mr. Abiodun Ariyo, the Group Head Corporate Banking and Structured Finance at Providus Bank, commended the University of Ibadan for the SMEs initiatives in a good will message, as he said Providus Bank is committed to financing start-up businesses and will continue to provide the necessary support through mentorship and training for business owners to grow their businesses. The chairman of the occasion and former vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Abel Olayinka, also drummed support for the SMES growth to become a pivotal part of national discussions by the government and the private sector. Providus Bank, the Bank of Industry, and African Young Brains, in their good will messages, applauded the University of Ibadan for the commitments to both academic and practical resources to supporting SMES‘ growth in the country.
