It was confusion, sorrow and anguish as worshippers of the cathedral church of St Luke, headquarters of Sapele Diocese of the (Anglican Communion) worshipped outside their church premises last Sunday as the church was under lock and keys by the youths last Thursday protesting the sack of their spiritual head Rt. Rev. Dr. B.A. Erifeta (JP) for financial management, greed, intimidation of members among others. The worshippers outside the church auditorium Some of the members of the church who were not aware of the new development came to church as early as 7am as usual, but were surprised to see that their church, the largest cathedral in town was placed under heavy keys as they were later briefed by the security men employed by the church. The people’s warden Mr. Onojorhoevwo Oghenero of the cathedral church of St. Luke Sapele who read his address during the brief open air service, announced a vote of no confidence placed on the Bishop by members of the rescue team of Sapele Diocese in a letter which was signed by himself and twelve others and addressed to His Grace, Most Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh, The Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of (Anglican Communion) and copied Rt. Rev. Christian Esezi Ide, Bishop, Diocese of Warri. The peoples Warden in a letter addressed to their spiritual head with the title, A call for immediate attention to Rescue Sapele Diocese from Greed, Oppression and Backwardness, drew his attention to what they alleged as the deteriorating state of Sapele Diocese since the enthronement of Rt. Rev. (Dr) Blessing A. Erifeta (JP), Noting that they have applied tolerance and deep perseverance to curtail all the excesses of the Bishop for the past six years with the expectation that things will get better but to no avail. He added that they have equally forestalled the eruption of serious crisis in the diocese from different quarters that have been agitating for a change and freedom from Bondage and right now everything has gotten to their elastic limit, whereas the Bishop sees both the laity and clergy as foolish Mumu or senseless people that do not know their right from their left. Mr. Onojorhoevwo also listed some of their grievances with the Bishop which has led to the apologetic state of the diocese and increased tension in the church to include, administering the holy Trinity Grammar school inherited from Warri diocese as his personal business, administering the pure water factory of the diocese as his private business, Reckless spending of Diocese funds and involvement of the diocese in frivolous loans for purchasing of choice vehicles, giving of a marching order to all the priests of the diocese to remove their salary account from first bank to Fidelity Bank Plc to facilitate loan transaction at the expense of the members of the diocese. Others crimes of the Bishop as alleged by the group are replacement of spirituality with materialism, absence of due process, non accountability, probity and conservation in the administration of finances of the diocese, incessant ordination and collation even though the diocese cannot care for the financial implication, display of high level of arrogance, autocracy and intimidation in all diocese board meetings and clergy staff meetings, where he does all the talking, gives reports and any move for a contrary idea/suggestion will not be countenanced by the Bishop and refusal of the Bishop to pay back the N8,000,000,00 clergy corporative money which he took without the notice of officials of the cooperative society, ignoring the official directive of the ministry of commerce, Delta State to refund the money. He also alleged of the Bishop incessant trips abroad with his family members, training of his children abroad at the expense of the diocese without due process amongst other endless list of his misdeeds, which they said has resulted in the drastic reduction of the church membership which now stood at 240 worshippers due to unnecessary financial pressure on them. They resolved to pass a vote of no confidence on him, calling on him to report himself and step aside while calling on the primate, most Rev. Nicholas Okoh to wade into the matter by giving them a Godly Bishop that will rebuild their dilapidated and wounded diocese, noting that they have put modalities in place to invite the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and other relevant agencies to investigate the Bishops financial recklessness. They also urged the primate to constitute an audit committee comprised of people from diocese outside Bendel province and a member from their group to guide against unwholesome influences

Youths of the cathedral church of ST. Luke’s Sapele Diocese, Delta State (Anglican Church) the headquarters of the Diocese, are Protesting against what they called financial recklessness, insubordination, intimidation of members etc, by their bishop, Rev. Dr. B.A Erifeta (JP) calling on the general headquarters Abuja to remove him from office with immediate effect to allow for speedy growth of the Diocese. The youths in their hundreds who rose from the youth synod meeting preparatory to their annual general synod at Jeddo on 29/07/2015, in Okpe Local government area placed the cathedral which is one of the largest worship centers in sapele under lock and heavy keys, carrying placards with the inscriptions, “without congregation no Bishop, without laity no Bishop, stop insulting our elders in church, Enough of Embezzlement of church funds and intimation, we need accountability of church fund, etc”. The youths in their letter Dated 14th July, 2015 which was copied the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt Rev, Dr. B.A. Erifeta (JP), The Vicar, Cathedral church of St. Luke’s, the standing committee of the church, the Elders of the church and all groups within the cathedral, which was signed by the youth president Mr. Gbaragada O. Clintin and many others including another letter from Coordinators of all the Diocese branches which was addressed to His Grace, Most Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of all Nigeria on the 24h day of July, 2015, states that having noted the reduction of the church membership with its attendant dwindling fortune occasioned by the Maladministration of the presiding Bishop, they have therefore resolved that he should take a bow and leave them immediately so that the church of God can move on. The youths also listed the alleged sins of their Bishop to include, the dissolution of the church choir for no justifiable reason, hurling of insult on the elders and members by the Diocesan whenever he comes to the cathedral to worship and sometimes to outsiders, while also sometimes uses offending and insulting words to members such as, “is there something wrong with you upstairs, are you alright? Which they said has sent many packing in droves to other sister churches or to other denominations. They added that in terms of development of the church, they are registering their grievances about the stagnation of projects, especially the non completion of the church building, the church schools and other meaningful projects for the propagation of the gospel of Christ including the church finances which no other member of the church could access despite the huge financial contributions of members not with standing the drastic reduction on the numerical strength of the church. They resolved therefore that henceforth “Assessment should be reduced to a barest minimum in other for the church to pay the back log, that the funds meant for the building of the church should be used for the building and not for assessment, advising that insult to elders and members from the pulpit and the altar should be stopped, since he, The Bishop has been called by God to bless and not to curse the members, calling on the Bishop to allow the church to move faster, but not the slow snail moment they are currently subjected”. All groups in the Diocese in their letter to their leader, called on all well meaning members of the Diocese to put a stop on the payment of the assessment and equally boycott this year synod because of the payment that has brought hardship to all members, the Bishop turning the synod to his personal business hustling ground where he gathers enough cash for his foreign trips and shopping, etc. They also alleged that the Bishop has purchased two jeeps with the church money, calling on members to say no to greed/oppression, no to financial embezzlement and telling of lies, no to evil prophecy etc warning too that since Christ is coming soon, members should not say they were not warned over the Bishops atrocities over time. At the time of filling this report, the Bishop of the Diocese could not be reached for his comments on the allegation leveled against him, but a senior pastor of the cathedral venerable Otemu Oyibo said they were taken aback by the activities of the youths yesterday the 28th day of July 2015 when they (youth) came out in their large numbers protesting against the Bishop. He assured that the leadership of the church will do everything possible to put an end to the crisis so that normal church activities could resumed adding that security operatives have been invited to fall stall any possible break down of law and order.

Five members of the same family were charged with the murder of a prophet who had been called to their their home in the village of Mazonde, Zimbabwe to help them cleanse their house of evil spirits. According to local newspaper, Zed 24 News, the accused family identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, appeared at the High Court in Harare facing a murder charge for participating in the death of self-professed Prophet Shamiso Kanyama, who accidentally died during a healing ceremony. Pastor Kanyama had reportedly asked his followers to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to heal the family that had been plagued by mysterious deaths. Zed 24 News reports that High Court Justice Owen Tagu heard how on that day, the late pastor had been invited to attend the home in the Muzarabani district, which is situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, by their priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti. The five men had requested the priest to help them clean their home of evil spirits, because it was causing mysterious deaths in their family. Responding to their request to perform a healing ceremony, Kanyama had ordered his followers to dig a grave and bury him alive because that was the way he summoned more healing powers to ward off evil spirits. However, the plan backfired on the prophet when instead of being resurrected as he supposed, the men dug up the grave again to find him dead. Kanyama helped to dig his own grave before praying and jumping inside, Father Zvidzai, who has turned State witness, told the High Court. He continued that after laying face down in the grave, he ordered his followers to start covering him with soil. “He pegged a grave-shaped pit in front of my hut and asked for help to dig the pit,” Zvidzai continued. “Deceased requested to be buried alive so that he would gain power to drive away the evil forces.” Fearing for the life of the prophet as the men were in the process of filling the grave, he requested the men to stop what they were doing, Joseph Taderera told Justice Tagu. However, they ignored his pleas when Kanyama urged them to continue the process of burying him alive, stating that he would rise from the grave unharmed. “I warned the men about the danger of their actions, but my advice fell on deaf ears because Kanyama shouted, telling me that I am disturbing his angels, and urged them to continue filling the grave, saying that he would later come out alive,” Taderera said.
