Health / 250 Substances In Cigarette Harmful To Your Lungs by ope2711(m): 5:30am On Dec 11, 2015 |
Tobacco smoke contains about 7,000 chemicals and 250 of such substances are known to be harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. The chemicals are hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. According to the International Cancer Research Agency, among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include acetaldehyde, aromatic amines, arsenic benzene and butadiene, to mention just a few. If you are looking for the ingredients on the labelling, you may not find them there. While experts insist that there is no incentive for smoking, they advise smokers to save their lungs by quitting the deadly habit. Smoking, according to the public health physician, Dr. James Ayorinde, is the leading cause of cancer of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth and liver. Ayorinde states that the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke have been known to double smokers’ risk of developing pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other infections that affect the airways. He says, “In addition, smoking causes inflammation and impairs immune function of the pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and rectum, as well as acute myeloid leukemia. It practically harms every organ of the body.” Experts on betobaccofree.com warn that each time cigarette smoke is inhaled it affects breathing and scars the lungs. Another condition, they say, that results from smoking is Emphysema, a condition in which the walls between the air sacs in the lungs lose their ability to stretch and shrink back. However, doctors say the real danger in smoking is its harmful effect on the health of non smokers. According to them, non smokers who live with smokers have an increased risk of developing a range of tobacco-related diseases, including asthma, respiratory illnesses, lung cancer and coronary heart disease. Also, the World Health Organisation describes second-hand smoking as the highest cause of sudden death in infants whose parents smoke, while pregnant women, who inhale smoke exhaled by their spouses, will experience frequent miscarriages. The global body states, “Passive smoking is a cause of sudden deaths. A child who lives in a household where there is a smoker has an increased risk of developing a range of respiratory illnesses and pneumonia. “Smokers’ neighbours will be prone to getting cold, cough and their lungs will have a reduced ability to function and grow because they are busy trying to process the smoke they inhale from the environment. A child that is exposed to second-hand smoke in the home is more likely to develop asthma,” WHO adds that direct smoking and second-hand smoking has increased the population of people living with heart diseases and warns that people must protect themselves against tobacco smoke inhalation at all costs. The body says there is evidence that passive smoking makes the blood clot and causes a reduction of antioxidant vitamins in the blood – conditions that affect the blood vessels of the heart. Ayorinde adds, “You will notice that any time you inhale smoke, you become breathless, uncomfortable and feel like you want to choke. You experience all that reaction because the blood is not getting the oxygen that it should. This affects the blood circulation. Just 30 minutes of exposure to second-hand smoke can affect how your blood vessels regulate blood flow to a degree similar to that which is seen in people who smoke.” The physician says studies show that passive smokers have a 20 to 30 per cent higher chance of developing lung cancer, compared to those who do not inhale tobacco smoke. There is nothing to gain and so much to lose by keeping such a dreadful habit. But you can quit, if you really set your mind to it. Politics / INEC Declares Bayelsa Election Inconclusive, Cancels Southern Ijaw Po by ope2711(m): 6:03pm On Dec 07, 2015 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the Bayelsa State governorship election as inconclusive. The electoral body also cancelled the election held in Southern Ijaw local government area on Sunday, December 6. INEC officials led by the REC, Prof Zana, had earlier announced results from seven of the eight local government area in the state with Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate and incumbent, Seriake Dickson in the lead. Dickson claimed victory in six of the LGAs while his main challenger, Timipre Sylva managed to win one LGA. It would be recalled that earlier today, PDP supporters besieged INEC office protesting the heavy presence of security operatives as well as delay in announcement of results from Southern Ijaw. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/12/07/inec-declares-bayelsa-election-inconclusive-cancels-southern-ijaw-polls/ |

Politics / Kogi Guber: Apc Nwc Deadlocked by ope2711(m): 6:24am On Nov 27, 2015 |
KOGI GUBER: APC NWC DEADLOCKED *.Fails to agree on Audu’s replacement *.PDP to INEC: Declare Wada winner *.Adegboruwa in court, seeks fresh election Efforts by members of the National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC to arrive at modalities to conduct the fresh primaries to replace or substitute late Prince Abubakar Audu in the ongoing Kogi governorship election ended in deadlock in Abuja yesterday. The development came just as Governor Idris Wada approached a Lokoja high court to declare him the winner of the poll. But in Lagos, human rights crusader, Olu Adegboruwa is in court seeking an order to compel Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct fresh governorship election in the state. Soon after the death of Prince Audu, who was coasting home to victory in last Saturday’s election was made public, the NWC of APC led by it national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun met and decided to conduct fresh primaries to elect Audu’s replacement. This position apparently did not go down well with some members of the NWC who are rooting for Audu’s running mate, Hon James Faleke to take over the ticket. There are also those who are clamouring for the runner up, Yahaya Bello, in the APC primary that Audu won to take over the ticket. Yesterday’s NWC meeting was brief and ended abruptly without any official statement from the party as to how and when the proposed new primary would take place. Rather the party’s national chairman said it was too early to comment on the process. However, inside sources said the meeting was deadlocked because of diverse and vested interests that clashed. When it was obvious that tempers would flare and tensions would rise, the national chairman who presided over the meeting brought it to an abrupt end. Though Nigerian Pilot learnt that there was enormous pressure mounted from within and outside the NWC for Faleke to inherit the ticket, the party hierarchy however, was said to be very wary of the possible backlash from a section of the state, especially the Igala people who are not willing for power to shift, at least for now. The development apparently made the Faleke option unattractive to the party, and living the party in a greater dilemma. Besides, the Faleke group insisted at the meeting that there was no need for fresh primaries to pick another flagbearer since Faleke was late Audu’s running mate and should naturally step into his shoes. Also, some prominent members of the party from Kogi East clamoured for Mohammed Audu, the son of the late Abubakar Audu to inherit the father’s ticket. Though the party is believed to be looking at this option seriously, but there are those who strongly believe that it is going to polarise the party more and mar its bright chances. Wada goes to court Meanwhile, Governor Idris Wada, who scored the second highest votes in the inconclusive election, has approached a federal high court in Lokoja asking to be declared winner. Also the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has concluded plans to go to court to ask it to declare its candidate winner as according to the party, APC no longer has a valid candiate and cannot in the eyes of law substitute a candidate outside the legally given time for such activity. The Kogi scenerio has left APC in a great dilemma it never envisaged and depending on how it handles it, the party may end up snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Declare Wada winner – PDP The last is yet to be heard on the crisis left behind by Prince Abubakar Audu as the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday said the All Progressives Congress, APC, has crashed out of the Kogi state governorship election, following Audu’s sudden demise. The APC candidate died before the announcement by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of the inconclusive governorship election held on November 21. This is coming as the PDP gave indication that it will be heading to the court to challenge INEC’s decision to allow APC present a new candidate who will inherit to votes cast in favour of late Audu. The PDP caucus raised an alarm that: “The AGF, INEC and APC are creating a scenario where a loser in a primary will patiently wait for the winning candidate to finish election and then have him either poisoned or assassinated before the final collation of results.” details; http://nigerianpilot.com/kogi-guber-apc-nwc-deadlocked/ |

Politics / Nobody Can Arrest Me – Saraki Fires- Talk Glitz by ope2711(m): 2:59am On Sep 20, 2015 |
Senate President, Bukola Saraki in a statement titled “CCT Defiance of Subsisting Court Order : Our Stand”, has mentioned reasons why he can not be arrested or tried by any body. Read statement below: Following the development in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) today, Friday, September 18, 2015 when the Tribunal chose to ignore the subsisting order of a Federal High Court by sitting, we hereby state our position as follows: 1.While the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, had stated and maintains that he is ready to submit himself to due process of the law on any issue concerning him, he also believes he has an inalienable right to resort to the same judiciary for protection when he feels his fundamental rights are about to be infringed upon. 2. It is for this reason that Dr. Saraki, having satisfied himself that the case filed by the CCB and the manner in which the case was filed show that he will not be given justice, resorted to the Federal High Court for the determination of the issues of competence of the prosecutor as well as compliance with the procedure stipulated in the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. 3. The Federal High Court on Thursday, September 17, 2015, therefore ordered that the all parties in the case should appear before it on Monday, September 21, 2015. The implication of this ruling by a Court of competent jurisdiction is that the sitting today has been overtaken by event. It is for this reason that Dr. Saraki chose to go about with his normal official schedule. 4. Today at the Tribunal, Counsel to the Senate President, Mr. M. A. Mahmud (SAN), raised a motion stating that there is a pending constitutional matter before the Federal High Court to be decided on Monday and that the Tribunal should hold the trial until the constitutional matter is disposed of. 5. We are however dismayed that the Tribunal chose to disregard the order of the Federal High Court and the motion to suspend hearing till Monday when all parties are expected to argue their positions on the constitutional matter. 6. It is also a surprise to us that despite the application by the lead counsel to the Senate President that he will produce Dr. Saraki on Monday and the personality of the person involved as the Number three man in the country, the Tribunal insisted on issuing a warrant of arrest as if its intention is simply to embarrass Dr. Saraki. We are not unmindful of the fact that the Tribunal is acting under political influence and external pressure. This is dangerous to our democracy. 7. The conduct of the Tribunal today left nobody in doubt that it cannot do justice on the matter before it. It is also clear that today’s decision is an abuse of the rule of law which portends danger to our judicial system. The Tribunal has equally set a bad precedent in the way and manner it conducted itself during the proceedings. 8. We want to emphasise the fact that this is not part of any war against corruption but using state institutions to fight political opponents and seeking to achieve through the back door what some people cannot get through democratic process. 9. We need to caution here that in a desperate bid to settle political scores and nail imaginary enemies, we should not destroy our democratic institutions and heat the polity for selfish reasons. Let us all learn from history. 10. The Senate President is a law abiding citizen who will not do anything to undermine the judicial process and authority. However, Dr. Saraki will always act to protect his fundamental human rights. Signed Yusuph Olaniyonu Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Senate President. http://www.talkglitz.tv/2015/09/18/nobody-can-arrest-me-saraki-fires-read-statement/ |
Politics / 16 Die, 172 Hospitalized As Cholera Hits Maiduguri Idps Camp - Vanguard News by ope2711(m): 4:57am On Sep 16, 2015 |
Cholera outbreak in three Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps within Maiduguri, Borno State, have left 16 people dead and 172 in critical conditions, with World Health Organization, WHO, and UNICEF battling the epidemic. However, Information Officer of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mallam Abdulkadir Ibrahim, in a telephone interview, said it was not an outbreak of cholera, but reported cases of diarrhoea and vomiting. NEMA is the sole agency in charge of feeding the IDPs since inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. The affected camps are those housing IDPs from Mafa along Dikwa/Ngala Road. Health officials at the camp told Vanguard that so far, 16 people had died of the outbreak, while 172 were in serious condition as they work with international organization to bring the situation under control. One of the health officials working with UNICEF told Vanguard, yesterday: “The situation at the camps is terrible. It was sudden and already a large number has been affected. “At the last count, we have 16 dead and about 172 affected. We are in an emergency health situation in those camps.” Damage control It was also gathered that the affected IDPs were prevented from leaving the camp by security agents in a move to prevent spread of the disease into the metropolis until the situation is brought under control. Also, those affected have been separated from the unaffected, and all the IDPs are being treated with preventive medicine. Another medical official said: “The camps were unkept, unclean and with all sort of waste all over which informed the outbreak and encouraged its wild-fire spread. “We are doing everything possible to ensure that we control the spread. We encourage the IDPs to ensure cleanliness.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/16-die-172-hospitalized-as-cholera-hits-maiduguri-idps-camp/

Politics / Police Kill Three Suspected Kidnappers In Delta by ope2711(m): 4:46am On Sep 16, 2015 |
THE crusade against the macabre business of kidnapping for a handsome ransom in the oil rich but impoverished Niger Delta region of the country has recorded some degree of success in Delta State as the police shot dead three suspected kidnappers. Delta State Police Spokesperson Celestina Kalu explained that a group of hoodlums were intercepted by the Orerokpe Division patrol team while driving a Toyota Corolla saloon car marked BWR 532 HL on September 11. Kalu said on sighting the policemen, the occupants turned in a suspicious manner but were subsequently pursued by the patrol men to Oghara Road, Agbarho where an exchange of gunfire ensued. She said that with the assistance of vigilante men, three of the hoodlums were fatally wounded while others escaped with bullet wounds while and their vehicle was taken to the station. According to her, preliminary inquiry revealed that the bandits had earlier kidnapped one Mrs. Paaga Blessing Emabari, 48, at Okuokoko in Okpe Local Council. Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said that the kidnapped victim, however, miraculously escaped from the grips of the hoodlums before their encounter with the patrol team. She added that investigation is in progress while determined efforts are being made by the police to track down the fleeing criminals. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/09/police-kill-three-suspected-kidnappers-in-delta/ |
