The story of a 2:2 graduate. My experience. I graduated with worst kind of 2:2 you could ever get. Closing CGPA was 3.49. I mean it was a nightmare, "Just give me an A in my project defence instead of this B that seems to have no value" I cried. "Where do I start from?" No connections, No money. It still remains the darkest day of my life. I was reading a motivational book a friend left in my room the previous day and it helped lift my morale. I made up my mind to make the best of the situation. So I started developing myself. Although I studied mathematics, I found accounting interesting and easy. I started with the ATS exams during my youth corps but along the way I got bored so after ATS3 I decided I wanted to make more use of my Mathematical skills, someone told me I should try being an actuary and it turned out it was exactly what I was looking for. After my youth service, the job search began, 15 months, no job, I was later called up by Lagos state to teach Mathematics to secondary school students but that didn't stop me from continuing my professional studies. Fortunately was called up by an insurance company who learnt of my exam success and wanted me to join them as an analyst. Today I am the most paid analyst in my company and i'm still hoping to develop myself further. God is key to your every attainment in life. Just hold on to him, develop new skills. Who knows, you might not need a job at the end of the day. Coz sometimes, you get tired of 9-5 in lagos. |
seemples:do you have the study notes yet? |
Ralia.... Oh my sweet Ralia, I will never forget that old woman in that bush, I guessed she must have died by now,how is that handsome mallam prince who rescued you? .... Those days mehn. Please who remembers the name of that woman who anchored tales by moonlight. Those days of Combatrin kids school on Saturdays |
In your second game I'll go for x2 Eastleigh and hw for Offenbacher Kickers |
Nice one bro. I think we share similar ideas. But I also know by now the first bet is lost even before it began. I have come to realise that in betting, you are either 100% correct or you get nothing. If you are 98% correct in all your games. The expected return may be .98 but the ACTUAL return is 0. So here's my rule. For every game you play, ask yourself this. Which game is my OUTLIER. That one game that won't go the way of the bookies. Coz 80% of the time it always happens. Let me take last weekend's game for example. The outliers were Man City(away draw) , Zenith St Petersburg (lost) and Sevilla (home draw) From this game today I am pretty sure that all 3 of Macclesfied, Gateshead and Dover won't win their home games. Either 1 will draw or lose. That's the outlier here coz I see you gave them all a home win. Enjoy your game |
The truth is, No matter where you are in Lagos, Just be careful, Always be at alert and avoid dark and lonely areas at night. May God continue to keep us safe. |
Ztie:there are so many opportunities for you my dear, you can become a data analyst, actuary, risk proffesional e.t.c depending on what catches your fancy. don't lose hope. Be Dynamic |
informatix: My advice to you is to go to church and marry I advice alot of Muslims to marry from the followers of Isa Ibn Maryam(Jesus). The practice of marrying from the followers of Jesus was well encouraged Islam. Islam believed in Jesus as a Messenger of God with miracles born by virgin mother Maryam with no father. Marry from church problems solved but make sure u iron out about ur children finish no problem.Convincing both parents might be easier but the real issue is getting to iron out that children part. How do you go about that without seeming selfish particularly if she's also a devoted christian. Moreover mothers are always closer to their children and emotions may come into play later. I don't want to get into a situation where I force my kids to accept my faith. It has to be their own free will though with guidance from me. May Allah help us all. |
ShehuAba: @Alanbb and Opendo pls kindly help us with right infos about Actuary.I will try and find time to create a new thread explaining this issue over the weekend. The pressure of work and exams leave me very little time to write. Please bear with me. |
Alanbb: Hi,i think a career as actuary is a very good option...fully qualified actuaries are very few so they are very valuable...i'm writing SOA exams now,i've passed 2 and i'm preparing for the 3rd one in november.it's been very stressful(combined with my bank work) but the end surely justifies the means...ur mathematics background will also be a great help...maybe u should give it a trial...all d best.... Wow! Did you attend the recent meet of the Nigerian Actuarial Society? Please send me a mail at opeakangbe@gmail.com We really need to network and share ideas. Although I'm with the Institute of Actuaries, I'm also taking 2 exams in the Sept/Oct session. Would be a privilege to meet u. I await your call. |
80kobo: Switch of the PC, Go out and have an offline life. Bros! U just said my mind. Emoticons can be pretty misleading. Some girls just don't know how to use them. |
234GT: 140 views and no comment? That's to tell u that situations like this have now become "normal" in the Nigerian financial space |
Graduated last year. Studied mathematics and honestly, I'm really confused about what to do next. Graduated wit a 2.1 but I don't see any advantage. If it was 1st class, ehen. Currently serving and thinking of what to do is giving me headache. Afta serving, should I go 4 masters, or should I do a professional course like ICAN or ACCA, or learn IT stuff...many ish plaguing me.
Well just think deeply about it, follow your heart. I was at this stage too during service and was also writing the ICAN exams but I just didn't have passion for all those book-keeping stuff (sorry to all accountants, but that's how I see it) someone introduced me to the actuarial exams, I did a little research and that just clicked it for me. It's tough but very rewarding as you can work ANYWHERE in the world once you are a qualified actuary. |
ireneidiva: First class or 2.1 with an MSC is cool for me. DaZz allLove your signature. Sums up everything that has been said on this thread. Everyone has potential. Ur job is to find and develop it. |
Xtargold: This question has been on my mind for a very long time. Are there really job opportunities for graduates of Mathematics......i mean a place u can really apply what u read in school?I'm tired of hearing things like 'a mathematician can work any where'......anywhere as what?Well, the best you can do is to adapt your intuitive skills and logical reasoning to other fields like accounting, finance, or actuarial science where you'll mostly deal with financial models, probability and statistics. But if you are thinking about applying abstract algebra, or real analysis. I'm sorry..... Not in Naija. Cheers. |
oyasrolyat: .....my pleasure dearWell if you are in lagos. How about we do a brainstorming session b4 the exam, maybe just a day or two. I really have limited time combining this with other prof. exams. Send me a mail to opeakangbe@gmail.com if u re interested. |
oyasrolyat: .....i've nt done dt yet buh in my lecture centre, i was told i'll pay d induction fee of 26k, exemption fee of 45k or thereabout and a registration fee of 10kThis thing is just increasing every year. Thanks all the same dear. I just hope I meet up b4 August sha! |
oyasrolyat: ICAN results is out at last.........please how much did u spend in converting from AtS 3 to intermediate. Please kindly give me the breakdown. Thanks |
cynt22: U will b shocked dat alotta fresh grads r below 26, esp wit private schools everywher. Majority of those dat graduated frm my set concluded nysc below dat age. Dats y when companies lyk nestle, gsk, access bank and d rest put up 25 as max age limit, u still meet thousands of ppl takin part in d assessment. A more accurate range wud hv bn 21 - 27Of course, there's a sizeable number of graduates below 26 but I'm looking @ it from a general angle. If for instance you were born in a place like Lagos with many private secondary schools giving double promotion and all that, then finished @ a private uni, then u may be below 26, but in a place like Enugu where u are most likely to attend a public secondary sch. and finish WAEC @18 take JAMB for another 2 yrs, then secure admission into a public uni. where u spend 4+n years where n is never a negative number. Also 1 year 4 NYSC, Then u see why most graduates finish @ 26+ years. |
It has to be B considering the way Nigerian educational system in structured, unless u are lucky to start your university education @ 16 in a private school and finish service @ 21, then u fall in category A. Also most companies recruit from age 24 upwards, by then the individual is expected to be matured enough to handle certain tasks. |
After a careful statistical analysis of the responses to the above named topic. Data available so far is . Yes:4 No: 14 Indifferent:1. Allowing for 0.5 %standard deviations, and using a chi square test @ 2 degrees of freedom. It could be inferred that Most Nigerians can't trust their partners with their friends. My conclusion: Although this is a very small sample, this says a lot about how we view ourselves and who we really are. If we can't trust our best friend with our partners, it means we can't be trusted with our friends partners too. Best friend or Not. Show me ur friend..... |
Yeah! I did, but I don't think I'll be attending it. |
Well as a mathematician, I would recommend the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (U.K) which is much more recognised here in Nigeria, I am a student myself, but still waiting for the results of my first exam. Although it's a long and hard route (yeah 15 tough exams) but it is also very rewarding. You need to pass at least one or two to get an entry level position in a reinsurance/insurance company or in any of the 2 actuarial consulting firms. Nigeria currently has less than 7 fully qualified actuaries.3 of whom are above 50 + 1 or 2 foreigners. And with the boost in pension funds administrators, there is a big boost for actuaries here in Nigeria |
Hi guys, I finished ATS 3 last year although I didn't pay for nor attend induction, I want to convert to Intermediate now and write BCRM in Nov. Can anybody share the procedure for converting and the breakdown of required fees. I'd really appreciate. Thanks |
koastar: Exactly my thought. Enyeama's reflex actions have declinedWhen I see internet coaches make comments like this above, I just shake my head. Did u expect any mortal keeper to save that Forlan goal? |
portage: Nice game all in all. Very entertaining if you ask me. |
All of una wey dey shout osaze, una too dey forget say d guy dey Bleep up 4 big stage. Beating Spain is still a possibility, at least dem don beat barca 4-0 before, make keshi go wtch d match na! |
AdoOloro: It depends on your location bro,. @Op I think u have your answer here bro. What are u passionate about, Do u have a good knowledge of it and not just hearsay? Think critically b4 venturing. What works for Mr. A may not work for Mr. B because Mr.B is lacking some form of knowledge or information. |
