FamilyCouple’s Wedding Turned Into Funeral After Both Die Hours Before Wedding. by opera1(op):
A couple’s wedding had to be hastily turned into a funeral after both died hours before they were due to get married, it was reported today. The nuptials of Luana Alves, 36 and her groom Rodrigo Nogueira, 31, had been due to take place today at 11am at a church in Passos, southeast Brazil.

But the night before the wedding both were in a car accident as they headed home to finalise preparations for their big day.

Police said their car collided head-on with another as driver Rodrigo tried to overtake another vehicle on Brazil’s 184 Highway.

Bride Luana died immediately and Rodrigo hours later after he was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

Shocked relatives, many of whom had just arrived in the town ready for the wedding, quickly had to organise the couple’s burial.

The hastily-arranged funeral was due to take place this afternoon in the same church where they were supposed to have tied the knot, according to reports.

The driver of the other car, Jorge Rocha, 50, was also taken to the local Alzeira Velano hospital but also died of his injuries.

SportsArda Turan Received 16 Games Ban In Football History Over Referee Attack by opera1(op): 7:30pm On May 10, 2018
On-loan Barcelona striker Arda Turan has received a record 16-match ban in Turkey after pushing a linesman in a moment of madness at the weekend.

Turan, 31, was released to Superlig side Basaksehir in January in a two-and-a-half season temporary deal having failed to impress at Camp Nou since moving from Atletico Madrid in 2016.

Signed to reinforce the Istanbul club in their bid for their first title in their history, he has made a total of 11 appearances to date, scoring on two occasions.

But in a 1-1 draw against Sivasspor Turan became incensed at the failure to award a foul, and channelled his rage at a linesman.

The player remonstrated furiously with the official, before shoving him and walking away. Unsurprisingly he was immediately issued a red card, and and the Turkish FA's disciplinary board have backed the decision by handing down the longest ban in the nation's football history.

Arda's ban means that he will miss Basaksehir's last two games of the 2017-18 season, with the club trailing leaders Galatasaray by two points.

He will additionally be barred from playing the first 14 games of 2018-19, almost half of the campaign.

CrimeEvans Weeps, Says "Let me face my trial alive, No Good Food In Prison" by opera1(op):
Alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans, broke down in tears on Monday before the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere, where he was arraigned on fresh two charges of kidnapping.
After initially refusing to come down from the prison van in protest, he was eventually brought into the courtroom by warders on the order of Justice Adedayo Akintoye.
Stepping into the courtroom bare-footed and in handcuffs, Evans, who wore a pair of shorts and a green T-shirt torn on the shoulder with sand stain on the back, immediately indicated to the judge that he had something to say.
“I have an explanation to make,” he said. “Since I have been in the maximum prison, they have been maltreating me; no visit, they don’t feed me well, I have eye problem and I can not see afar.”
But he was countered by one of the prison officials who maintained that Evans was being given the same treatment as other inmates.
“We have been treating him very well; he is well fed and people have been visiting him.
“A doctor has been checking him; the doctor came to check him yesterday (Sunday) and even this morning, before coming to court; because he was saying he can’t be in court, that he is not feeling fine.
“But when the doctor checked him yesterday (Sunday) and this morning, the doctor said he was healthy and that he saw no reason why he shouldn’t be in court,” the prison official said.
But Evans said he was only seen by a nurse and not a doctor.
Counsel for the second defendant, Ogedi Ogbu, told the court that his client, Joseph Emeka, had also made the same complaints to him.
But the Lagos State Director of Prosecutions, Ms. Titilayo Shitta-Bey, said Evans was only making up an excuse, urging the court not to buy it.
“That was the same thing he said before an Ikeja High Court and we wrote the prisons and they wrote us back that he was being taken care of like every other inmate,” Shitta-Bey said.
Reacting, Justice Akintoye directed the prison officials to ensure that Evans and his co-defendants were treated like other inmates, noting that they were still presumed innocent.
On the request of Evans’ lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, who had earlier written to the court, praying that the case be stood down, the judge stood the case down.
But as soon as the judge rose, Evans broke down in tears.
“What have I done to you people? They have been beating me; no good food; I have been locked up in one place since August 30 last year; why are they taking my case personally? Let me face my trial alive, why do you people want to kill me,” he said, sobbing.

About then, his lawyer, Ogungbeje, came into the courtroom and began to pacify him.
The defendants were eventually arraigned on the fresh charges.
Evans was arraigned alongside Joseph Emeka, Linus Okpara and Victor Aduba. The charges border on “conspiracy and unlawful capture.”
The state alleged in the charges that the defendants conspired with some persons still at large to “unlawfully capture one Uche Okorafor on the 21st of November 2014, at Festac Town, Lagos; and demanded a random of $2m.”

The DPP said they acted contrary to sections 409 and 269 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011, adding that they were liable to punishment under the same law.
But they pleaded not guilty.
Justice Akintoye adjourned till May 25, 2018 for commencement of trial.

Health2,131 Pregnant Women Tested Positive To HIV In Lagos by opera1(op): 8:37pm On May 06, 2018
No fewer than 1,131 pregnant women have been tested positive to the dreaded and incurable HIV disease in Lagos State, Health Commissioner, Dr. Jide Idris, disclosed at the weekend.

The commissioner, at a ministerial news conference in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, disclosed that 38,791 pregnant women were tested for HIV, out of which 1,131 of them tested positive in the last one year.

He said the test was carried out from the money received from Global Fund to tackle HIV issues in the state in a bid to stem the spread.

He said the agreement between the Global Fund and the Lagos State Government was signed in February 2017 with the Lagos State Ministry of Health expected to receive and manage the Global Fund grants, to oversee grant implementation and procurement, and to report on grant programmatic and financial performance to the Global Fund Secretariat.

“This first phase of the grant was described as the pilot phase and it was agreed that the success of Lagos State in this phase would be a benchmark for which the Global Fund would be in a position to implement in other states in the country for implementation and indeed other sub-national entities world-wide for program implementation.

“During the pilot phase of the grant (January – December, 2017), a total sum ofUSD9,623,390.08 was made available to the Principal Recipient to cover Procurement of Health products for PLHIV, conduct of the Lagos State AIDS Indicator Survey, Implementation and Technical Support to Health facilities in the 3 LGAs by the Sub-Recipient (APIN) and funds to the LSMOH for Grant Management.

“The Lagos State Government approved State Counterpart Funds to the tune of 10% of the total grant sum to support programme implementation. By the end of 2017, the support provided through Global Fund was able to avail a minimum of 226,768 persons (+15yrs) with free HIV counselling and testing as well as knowledge of their HIV status, with the cumulative total of 10,623 PLHIV in the 3 LGAs placed on the lifesaving Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART).

“Also, at least 38,791 pregnant women know their HIV status out of which about 2,131 (HIV positive pregnant women) were enrolled for the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission programme,” he stated.

Idris said the key objectives of the grant were to reduce new HIV infections, and improve the quality of life for the infected, affected, and to place 10,337 number of PLHIVs on treatment of which 3876 are children; provide people living in Epe, Ikorodu and Oshodi Isolo LGAs with universal access to high-quality, patient-centered prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services for TB/HIV by 2017 and contribute towards achieving HIV epidemic control in Epe, Ikorodu and Oshodi/Isolo LGAs by year 2020 with Epidemic control defined as ART coverage of at least 80%.

Crime23-year-old Man Jailed For Stealing Mattress by opera1(op): 2:45pm On May 04, 2018
A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday, sentenced a 23-year old man, Emmanuel Chukwu, to four months imprisonment for stealing a mattress.
The Judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 as fine and said that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to steal.
Chukwu, who resides at Mamasa Estate Galadima Gwarimpa, Abuja, was convicted on a count of theft.
The convict had pleaded guilty to the offence and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, had told the court that a neighbour to the accused, John Nwaru, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police Station, on April 21.
Dalhatu told the court that the accused stole the 10-inch mattress belonging to the complainant.
He said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

Crime4 Suicide Bombers Killed In Failed Attack In Borno by opera1(op): 2:31pm On May 04, 2018
The Police Command in Borno said four Boko Haram terrorists were killed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies in Mainari Kanuri and Shua villages in Konduga Local Government Area of the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Edet Okon, disclosed this in a statement released in Maiduguri on Friday.
“Three of the suicide bombers detonated their IEDs killing themselves only, while the fourth person killed herself and three others,’’ Okon said.
He said seven other persons were injured during the attack and had been taken to the hospital.
He said that security had been beefed up in the area and all other places around Maiduguri city to safeguard the public from Boko Haram attacks.
“Meanwhile, a suicide bomber was sighted on Thursday by security agents and was promptly neutralised in Bama Local Government Area, but no casualty was recorded.
“The Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, assures the general public of the commitment of the Force to continue to protect lives and property,’’ the spokesman said.
PoliticsOnly N100m Was Spent On Senator Melaye's Failed Recall- INEC. by opera1(op): 2:14pm On May 04, 2018
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says only N100m was spent on the failed attempt to recall Kogi-West lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye.

The INEC chairman said this while responding to a question posed by this reporter at a press conference in Abuja on Friday.

Yakubu said the figure was nowhere near the N100bn being bandied by the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said a recall exercise is just like conducting a Senatorial election, adding that Kogi-West which Melaye represents, has 552 polling units and seven local governments.

The INEC boss said ad hoc staff were deployed in all the polling units.

FamilyMy Husband Not My Choice, Woman Tells Court by opera1(op): 3:25pm On Apr 25, 2018
A housewife, Maimuna Mohammed, on Wednesday begged a Mararaba Upper Area Court, in Nasarawa State, to dissolve her marriage to Saidu for alleged violence and irresponsible behaviour.

Maimuna told the court that Saidu was never her choice of husband but was imposed on her by her parents.

She said that she married Saidu under the Islamic rights in Mambila, Taraba and the union was blessed with three children.

She alleged that Saidu always threatened her life and in the habit of beating her.

“He does not care for me and the children to the extent that he no longer feeds us.

“There is no peace and love in the marriage. In fact, I always tried to endure him with the hope that he would change his behaviour.

“Unfortunately, he didn’t, rather he threatens my life at the slightest provocation.

“He has no regards for me and disrespects me, so I can no longer continue with this marriage,” she said.

The petitioner also informed the court that the respondent was not her choice of husband, rather her family’s choice.

“The marriage between me and my husband was never my intention, because we were joined under the family rights.

”My family never allowed me to bring a man of my choice, but I had no option but to accept,” she added.

The respondent, Saidu, however, denied the allegations.

The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case until May 2 to allow the parties settle out of court.

SportsWenger: It Wasn’t My Decision To Quit Arsenal; I Want Europa Trophy by opera1(op): 2:16pm On Apr 25, 2018
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his impending exit as Arsenal manager at the end of the season was not his decision.

Wenger will step down after 22 years in charge of the Gunners at the end of the current campaign and is aiming to guide his team to the Europa League final with victory over Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman insists the timing of his shock announcement was not his call, but refused to go into any further details.

“The timing wasn’t really my decision,” Wenger stated during his pre-match conference on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg clash against Atletico Madrid.

“For the rest, I have spoken about it already.”

Wenger has survived intense pressure in recent years with disgruntled Gunners fans demanding a change, but the Frenchman claims that is just part of the emotional society of today.

“When people are unhappy, it isn’t always a majority,” Wenger added.

“We live in an emotional society where people can express how they feel.”

The former Monaco coach is determined to leave the club on a high by winning the Europa League.

“I want to win and continue to do what I have done my whole life,” he stated.

“The next game is in Europe and then we face United. I want to win those games. Is there a perfect goodbye? I don’t know.

” I want to do as well as I can. We have been challenged mentally and I have seen my players respond.

“This group of players deserve something special and I want to do it for them and achieve it with them.

“My biggest satisfaction would be to be successful with the players I have.”
