During recent years, people are used to the fast pace of life and they like to eat take-out food in order to save time. Take-out food are usually put in the disposable foam containers. The waste foam containers are always thrown away by people. This results in the serious damage of the environment. However, in fact, people should be aware of the importance of protecting the environment. Recycling styrofoam actions are usually taken by the organizations and the ordinary people will contribute to the environment protection. People use plastic products every day since they provide us with benefits and convenience. Polystyrene products can be used to wrap the package, decorate the cars and pack the electronic appliances. Styrofoam can be used to make disposable coffee cups and food containers. In the most of the occasions, people throw away the used packages and containers, therefore, a lot of EPS waste are produced every day. https://i0.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/12703020-compactor-and-densifier.jpg?w=560 People can collect the waste plastic products and throw them into the specific recycling bins. Many cities have machines that can process these waste into renewable useful products. The machines usually include compactors, densifiers and melting machines. Styrofoam is actually something that can be recycled but it has to be compressed because it’s about 90 percent air, once it’s compressed it can be recycled and made into new products. So, Styrofoam recycling is a good way to deal with environmental pollution. The technology is being used to compress polystyrene foam, collected waste foam both, then make them into highly dense blocks which can be turned into new products such as picture frames, decorative mouldings and office supplies. The densifier would break down and condense items such foam packaging, cups, and shipping supplies into smaller units shaped like bricks. Once the polystyrene is condensed into bricks it will be shipped off to end markets and recycled into plastic products. Source: People Should Be Aware of the Importance of Recycling EPS Products

By: Samuel M. Chinwe Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, called malaria vectors. This year World Malaria Day 2019, WHO joins the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, the African Union Commission and other partner organizations in promoting “Zero malaria starts with me,”. Below are global facts surrounding water; World’s First Malaria Vaccine Launched In Malawi, Africa on the 24th of March, 2019. Malaria remains one of the world’s leading killers, claiming the life of one child every two minutes, according to WHO statistics. Children under five are at greatest risk of its life-threatening complications. Worldwide, malaria kills 4,35,000 people a year, most of them children. https://i2.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/D41tiA7X4AIWO5p.jpg?resize=650%2C650 Mosquitoes transmitting malaria are the deadliest animals The world’s first vaccine against malaria is being rolled out. The WHO expects it to achieve about a 40% protection rate. Community Health Workers in sub-Saharan Africa are vital for preventing and treating malaria among children and pregnant women – two of the highest groups at risk of dying from the disease This year Paris will host World Malaria Day 2019 and shine a light on the 300+ million people who are at risk of malaria in francophone countries. Mosquitoes only bite at night or being infected once makes you immune are a few myths about malaria that need to be debunked. According to WHO’s latest World malaria report, no significant gains were made in reducing malaria cases in the period 2015 to 2017 Nearly 1/2 of the population is at risk from malaria. https://i2.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/world-malaria-day.jpg?resize=650%2C325 93% of malaria deaths are in Sub-Saharan Africa. There were 445K deaths from malaria in 2016. In 2016, there were ~216 million cases of malaria in 91 countries. 43% of people at risk of malaria are not protected by insecticide-treated bets or indoor residual spraying of insecticides. The war against malaria will only be won when we are more hygiene conscious and practice better preventive measures. 2.4m people have fled fighting due to Boko Haram. They take refuge in camps by LakeChad where they have to face malaria. https://i1.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/D41FlDAWkAAFomS.jpg?resize=650%2C433 Poor-quality malaria drugs cost sub-Saharan Africa up to $39 million every year & worse yet, put too many lives at risk. The Nobel Prize has been awarded to at least 6 discoveries related to malaria including Sir Ronald Ross in 1902 and Julius Wagner-Jauregg in 1927. The latest was to Tu Youyou who discovered artemisinin, a substance which inhibits the malaria parasite. She tested the medicine on herself: it now saves countless lives every year. https://i1.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/58375792_10156351039504103_324608835048177664_n.jpg?resize=650%2C431 According to the American Mosquito Control Association, there are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world, and at least 176 of them can be found in the United States. The most common, and most dangerous, are the various species in the Culex, Anopheles, and Aedes genera. Source: World Malaria Day 2019: What to know About Malaria Globally |
By Dr Charles Omole In a previous article, I revealed some of the ways judges and court staff are induced by litigants to “buy” verdicts. Judicial corruption is a global phenomenon, although its worst manifestations are in developing countries. By 2015, Transparency International (TI) found that 28% of citizens across Sub-Saharan Africa who had contact with a judge or court official paid a bribe. I am sure that is more like 80% in Nigeria. There is no one way to reform the Judiciary and we must find what works for Nigeria rather than simply copy what other nations did. A corrupt judiciary means that the legal and institutional mechanism designed to curb corruption generally will be handicapped. The Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct have been an important reference for the development of codes of conduct, there is increasing recognition of the limits of self-regulation by judges. In order to uphold judicial integrity, it is vital to balance legitimate concerns for the independence of the judiciary while keeping judges accountable and minimise abuses. The judiciary is the public institution that is mandated to provide essential checks on other public institutions. A fair and efficient judiciary is the key to anti-corruption initiatives. There are willing are unwilling victims amongst these judges, but let’s explore some solutions. Like I stated before; judicial corruption is not just about the judges. The clerks, registrars and admin staff in the courts are the worst culprits in most cases of corruption experienced by the public when dealing with the courts. Firstly; the judiciary sadly will reflect the condition of the nation as a whole. We cannot have an honest judiciary in a largely dishonest nation. So what we can do is reduce occurrences. Corruption in the judiciary is a complex problem and needs to be addressed using variety of approaches. Here are 11 ways we can reform: REMOVE ALL PROSECUTORIAL POWERS AWAY FROM THE POLICE There should be a reform that limits the job of the police only to investigating crime and passing the files to a separate prosecution agency for determination of whether to prosecute or not in ALL cases. The police use their power to prosecute some crimes badly at the moment. They use it to fleece Nigerians and also to corrupt the Judges, especially at the Magistrate & High court level. NEW JUDICIAL GUIDELINES MUST SET TARGETS FOR ALL JUDGES Judges MUST obtain special permission from the Head of their respective courts if their performance misses the target is all cases. These targets will include for instance; how long it takes for a case to be completed, limit on how many adjournments can be granted etc. These must be targets with consequences. FAIR & INDEPENDENT APPOINTMENTS PROCESS Garbage in is garbage out. If the appointment of judges are not based on merit; corruption would have been introduced from the very beginning. Such judges will feel emboldened to continue with the corruption that brought them into office in the first place. Selection criteria should be objective and appointment decisions well documented, with public access to information on the decision-making process. THREE-YEARLY 1-2-1 REVIEW OF JUDGES All judges must have a one to one performance review every three years. This must be made compulsory and poor performing judges sacked. This will have the effect of strengthening internal oversight within the judiciary. DIGITISATION OF THE COURT PROCESS The governmentt should get rid of the mainly paper-based court processes & embrace modernisation via electronic judicial platforms. You can never get rid of papers in the court process; but you can reduce it drastically. BETTER PUBLIC TRANSPARENCY OF CASES There should be better public access and information on all cases in the spirit of Open Justice. The more the public know, the less chance of some backroom deal taking place. REGULAR INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SURVEY OF COURT USERS There should be surveys and consultations with court users measuring trends and reports of abuses. This MUST be done by a body independent of Courts and such public engagement will lead to more responsive service from the court staff. STRONGER SENTENCING GUIDELINES The more fixed guidelines judges are made to work to; the more consistent judicial verdicts will be and many room for corruption will be blocked. In the UK, anytime a judge wishes to deviate from the sentencing guideline, you are required to write to the Head of Court to explain why. A Strong sentencing guideline will reduce judicial discretion but it has the effect of creating consistency. BETTER PAY FOR COURT STAFF & JUDGES Given the salient work they do, judges and court staff deserve better pay and remuneration. This will help reduce inherent temptation to demand bribes. BETTER & REGULAR TRAINING FOR JUDGES https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/11/National-Judicial-Council.jpg Every judge must undergo yearly training and regular appraisal. Better and regular training will ensure that reform is seen as capacity building & not as a threat. These training exercises will need to emphasize judicial codes of conduct. BETTER PROACTIVE INTERVENTION BY THE NJC NJC’s current laid back posture must end. They will need to be more interventionist to protect the integrity of judicial processes. NJC must be more muscular in disciplining judges and initiating investigations even if there have been no complaints. NJC should take on a monitoring role of judges and step in to query any abnormal or unreasonable verdicts. Actually I have over 30 ideas of what we can do to minimise corruption and reform our judiciary in Nigeria but I will stop here for now. I hope there is enough said in this thread to give hope and help initiate needed reforms. The success of any reform efforts is predicated on strong political will and national ownership. Eradication of corruption from the justice system is a joint task involving not only judges and members of the legal profession, but literally all stakeholders, including all branches of government, the media and the civil society. Your business has big plans for now and the future. You are betting big on technology to take your business to the next level. Unknown to you, it is this same technology that is hindering and preventing your business from attaining its full potential. The interesting thing here is that some of the most common tech mistakes that businesses make are also the easiest to fix. Here are some tech mistakes that are hindering the growth of your business. You think you’re smarter than robots https://www.uitvconnect.com/sites/default/files/Robots%20will%20be%20smarter%20than%20humans%20by%202029.jpg More businesses every day are jumping on the artificial intelligence bandwagon, and for good reason. AI can help optimize business operations, sift through huge amounts of customer data, and capture information that can help you make better decisions. The robotic takeover of the manual, repetitive tasks of businesses is inevitable. You can use this development to your advantage, or you can attempt to fight off the robot revolution. A business like Jumia, Nigeria’s no 1 shopping destination is already taking advantage of the benefits of AI with its chatbot tagged Jumia Bot. The Jumia Bot is the pocket assistant that helps you order food when you are hungry, book a flight or hotel when you want to travel and also assist with your shopping. Weak login password(s) https://365itsolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Your-Password-is-Weak.png In this era of online security consciousness and hackers looking for ways to steal information, using weak passwords for your login can put your business in great risk especially if you have customer information on your database. There’s no excuse for not having a more secure login process. You can use two-factor authentication which requires you to use a password to log in as usual, but goes one step further and forces you to confirm the login via a text message or phone call. Not recognizing that technology evolves Technology is highly dynamic. This means that training within a company must continually evolve. If you don’t focus on keeping up, your business will be left behind. The only way to stay on the cutting edge of technological evolution is to routinely stay updated. Give yourself and your staff as much training as possible, not only on new technologies but on systems currently in use as well. When you accept that you and your business will be lifelong tech learners, you’ll stay one step ahead of the pack. No reliable backup https://www.chiapashosting.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/backup-1.jpg You should never assume that your backup system is working properly. At least, once each month you should back up a test directory, erase it, and then do a test restore. This will ensure that your backup device is working, but you also need to make sure that the proper data is being backed up. Buying cheap tech equipment I.T. will cost you a lot of money. In fact, depending on the industry you’re in, tech could be your biggest investment. Cheap, outdated and otherwise unsuitable tech arrangements can cripple your business and cost business owners way more in time, trouble and overall inefficiency. Instead of looking for the least expensive solution, determine what you’re going to need, and then look for the best deals on quality hardware and software.
