In the history of the world, no nation has successfully tackled the problem of underdevelopment and extreme poverty using the socialist economic model. In fact, nations have been able to tackle the two above problems using the capitalist economic model. China had to open its economy and introduced a free market policy that has seen it rise to become the second biggest economy in the world. Countries move from a socialism to capitalism to experience growth and those like North Korea, Venezuela and Eritrea who are core socialist states have continue to suffer huge economic crisis. It is very surprising to see Nigeria moving from a free market capitalist economy to a socialist one under President Buhari, this only goes to show a proper lack of economic knowledge. In the quote attributed to the President recently, he noted that his administration has laid the foundations and are committed to seeing it through and that he was going to work harder this time around. The question here is, what foundation is the president talking about, is it the same foundations built on socialism that has destroyed Nigeria’s economy in the past four years and made its people poorer. One thing about socialism is that the center becomes the only source of survival for everything and today, our states have become parasites on the federal government, always running to the center for intervention for every little challenge, how long will this last?

Nigeria, that was once the fastest growing economy in the world is not even among the top 3 fastest growing economies in Africa. Ethiopia, Rwanda and Ghana now hold those positions and that is because they are the most liberal and business friendly economies in Africa. The more reason why Ghana will wake up and deport Nigerians without even thinking of the economic consequence should Nigeria decide to relate economically. Nigeria can only tackle poverty when it becomes a market economy where the private sector runs the economy which will see an increase in foreign investments and these where the focus of the Atiku Plan. When Atiku noted that he was going to sell NNPC, the ruling APC got its supporters to attack the plan and accused Atiku of planning to sell the cooperation to his friends. APC recently twitted a picture of the cooperation’s building and wrote under, “Thank You for saving us from being sold”. This only goes to show how myopic those in charge of the government are when it comes to the economy. Atiku Abubakar is right about his decision to privatize NNPC and this is why, the cooperation has 3 sectors, the downstream, upstream and the midstream. The downstream sector has not been making any profit at all but rather, Nigeria has continued to lose billions in naira in financing its activities and paying of its workers. None of our 4 refineries, depots and pipeline marketing company had declared any dividend in the past 20years. The right thing to do is to sell it off to an investor who will assume ownership of both the asset and the liability. Nigeria stand to gain because the losses will be eliminated and huge sums will made through taxes.

In the upstream sector, NNPC has been stagnated at 2million barrels per day for over 2 decades because it has always failed to meet its cash call obligation to its joint venture partners and this has laid to limitations in the operations of oil exploration, oil prospecting, oil drilling and many other projects. According to Dokun Ojomo in a recent tweet, A privatized NNPC will set the government free from looking for funds to fulfill her cash call agreements as the new investors will run NNPC in a professional way, oil production will improve and more taxable income will be derived from the petroleum profit tax. Money from the sale of NNPC will be redeployed to other sectors of the economy such as the Power sector which will also generate income, this is called Portfolio re-balancing in finance. The Midstream has already been privatized with NNPC owning 49%, it is run by the NLNG and this sector is one of the highest generating revenue sector for the NNPC. This is what Atiku is looking to achieve but without making research, the APC has gone all out to crucify the plan. If our 4 refineries are privatized and starts to work and that of Dangote also, just like in the telecoms sector, the price of its commodity will be determine by market forces. Take the charge of a mobile telephone call per minute in 2001 and compare it to today, it has dropped because of an increase in competition in that sector, the petroleum sector will experience the same. Atiku has also promised to put NNPC on the stock exchange so that Nigerians will be able to trade on it and buy shares, Nigerians will become owners of NNPC and will benefit when profits are made. For football lovers, Manchester United is among the top three richest club in the world because it has been listed on the New York stock exchange with people from all over the world buying shares in the club. This has laid to more revenue for the club to undertake new ventures and also seen its profit rise. Nigerians stand to gain more from a privatized NNPC.

Atiku should not relent in his court case as Nigeria is currently sitting on a time-bomb needing someone with his economic knowledge to save it. Another 4 years of the socialist policies of Buhari will see Nigeria become an Eritrea or a Venezuela which will be bad for the African continent. An Atiku’s victory in court will not only strengthen our democracy, it will give our economy a new sense of life. Atiku should also not be bothered by the decamping of his former DG, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, even in the bible, the betrayal of Jesus Christ by his close confident Judas Iscariot which led to the death of Christ, did not stop Jesus from completing his mission on earth. Nigeria will surely work again.

Kano Politics: As the Lion Roars Again

By Sani Abdulrazak

The great people of Kano state will go to the polls on Saturday 23rd March 2019, to conclude the inconclusive governorship election of 9th March 2019 in some parts of the state, it is with great admiration I have followed and read about the situation report. As expected, the country will be keenly watching and observing as events unfold.

To begin with, Kano being the most populous state, having the second highest number of registered voters in the country and also one of the models of peaceful election is unarguably the heart of Nigerian politics. Considering how enlightened ''Kanawa'' are at voting the candidates of their choice across party lines, any party or individual seeking power at the centre needs Kano as much as human beings need oxygen. With the ''Buhari factor'' now out of place, it is therefore no surprise that the politics of 2023 at the centre has unofficially kicked off in Kano. Political calculations have it that whoever has Kano holds the aces in 2023.

Expectedly, never has the ephemerality of politics been more apparent in the country today than in Kano. The state is pervaded by a miasma of tense and volatile atmosphere arising from bitter rivalry between the two power camps (Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya). The ripple effect of this has led to the destruction of lives and properties.

My kind appeal to these ''Power camps'' is to note that the conduct of this re-run election in a peaceful, free and fair manner is a victory for both of them. They will be writing their names in the sands of time by ensuring that their personal ambition or feud as the case may be is not worth the blood of a single ''Bakano''. Let the atmosphere be conducive enough for people to exercise their franchise. The security agencies should ensure and protect the safety of voters.

I therefore urge the good people of Kano to not only come out and vote, but to ensure that those votes count. It is indeed an act of bravery synonymous to ''Kanawa'' to come out against any form of threat, intimidation and/or violence to cast their vote. It is reason we are moving forward because value always honors who reward it.

There will always be people who believe Kano politics is to Nigerian politics what Roger Federer is to tennis. There will also always be people who will debate that, but the fact still remains that Kano is the lion and will roar again come Saturday.

Politics › Nigerian Woman Named Commonwealth Young Person Of The Year For Abuse Support by Opinionated(op): 5:02pm On Mar 14, 2019
A young Nigerian woman who is helping thousands of sexual and domestic abuse victims, has been named Commonwealth Young Person of the Year.

Twenty-eight-year-old Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi is among four exceptional young people from India, Nigeria, the Solomon Islands and Saint Lucia have won prizes at the 2019 Commonwealth Youth Awards in recognition of their efforts to end hunger, sexual violence, sanitation issues and climate change.

A ceremony was held today at the Commonwealth’s headquarters in London, where winners shared a £12,000 grant for their innovative projects.

The Commonwealth Youth Awards regional winners are:

Africa and Europe: Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, Nigeria, focus on SDG 5: Gender Equality
Asia: Padmanaban Gopalan, India, focus on SDG 2: Zero Hunger
The Caribbean and Canada: Johanan Dujon, Saint Lucia, focus on SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
The Pacific: Bobby Siarani, Solomon Islands, focus on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Oluwaseun, who also scooped the overall prize of 2019 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year, set up the ‘Stand to End Rape’ (STER) initiative.

A survivor of sexual violence herself, she set up the service to offer support to women, men and young people who have experienced any form of gender-based abuse in Nigeria.

STER trains healthcare workers how to deal with survivors and provides them with free health kits such as HIV tests.

Speaking at the awards, she said: “I dream of a future where this work is not required. I dream of the day when sexual violence is completely eradicated from this world.”

Oluwaseun’s work has reached over 200,000 people providing pro-bono medical, legal, mental health, educational and empowerment services.

Her sentiments were echoed by an Indian socio-entrepreneur, Padmanaban Gopalan, who hopes to end hunger.

He founded the ‘No Food Waste’ programme in India which sees 12,000 volunteers collect surplus food from parties and restaurants. The volunteers then deliver it to ‘hunger spots’ in India to feed the hungry.

He said: “My programme has recovered over 650,000 meals in my country which have benefited nearly one million people.”

From Saint Lucia, Johanan Dujon founded an indigenous biotechnology company ‘Algas Organics’. His company develops commercial agricultural products from harmful Sargassum seaweed.

These products unblock fish landing sites and reduce the harmful effect of the seaweed’s hydrogen sulphide emissions on local communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said: “Saint Lucia heavily depends on tourism. This seaweed problem has been having a crippling effect on our tourism and local fishery sector.

“We have developed a process to transform this seaweed to highly quality fertiliser that we now export to other countries.”

Johanan hopes to use his grant to expand his work to other affected small island states in Africa and the Pacific.

Solomon Island’s advocate for sustainable livelihoods, Bobby Siarani, founded a bio-gas initiative to address waste disposal and sanitation issues. The project delivered biogas-based construction workshops to over 500 young people and has provided clean energy to hundreds of people in rural areas of his country.

Bobby plans to use his Commonwealth grant to take his initiative to remote areas in the Solomon Islands.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, who presented the awards, said: “The pace, depth and scope of development in any society depend on how well its youth are nurtured and supported.

“This means providing the space for young people to thrive, to contribute and to realise their potential.

“In such an environment, they are able to exercise their rights and citizenship, and to find fulfilment and purpose; passing on to others the gains and positive values that come from the true community.”

Every year the Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work recognise the exceptional contribution of young people, aged 15-29, of 53 Commonwealth countries who are leading initiatives in view of the sustainable development goals.

From more than 500 nominations from over 45 countries, 16 finalists were chosen by a panel of judges including representatives of high commissions, partner organisations and young leaders.

The 12 additional finalists for the awards were:
Africa and Europe:

Alice Mukashyaka, Rwanda
Brenda Katwesigye, Uganda
Turatsinze Mafigi Victor, Uganda

Asia:

Siti Najihah Kamilah Binti Latif, Brunei
Sai Venkata Satya Kedar Illa, India
Shanza Khan Shahani, Pakistan

The Caribbean and Canada:

Ryan Robinson Perinchief, Bermuda
Ashley Komangaapik Rose Cummings, Canada
Curmira Gulston, Trinidad and Tobago

The Pacific:

Sivendra Michael, Fiji
Zoe Paisley and Lisa Paisley, Fiji
Angelica Salele and Isabell Rasch, Samoa

This is the 30th year of the Commonwealth Youth Awards which are run by the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) to promote the innovation, creativity and potential of young people in solving socio-economic and environmental challenges.

Health › Why The Demand To Look Young In Silicon Valley Is Becoming More Crucial Than HW by Opinionated(op): 2:03pm On Mar 13, 2019
In Silicon Valley, techies and budding million-dollar entrepreneurs have run into a crisis: How do I stay relevant and how do I remain youthful? No longer is it Hollywood’s A-list elite that are vying to look new day fresh; in the tech capital of the world, if you don’t look the part – you don’t get the job.

“There’s no photo shopping yourself for a Skype interview,” says renounced anti-aging specialist Richard Haxton of Richard Haxton’s Transformational Skin Solutions of Los Altos (SkinByHaxton.com).

With the growing epidemic of ageism at mega-corps such as Google, Facebook and Apple, there has been a stampede to find a solution to look young to survive in today’s job market. As overheard in many coffeehouse conversations, it’s easier for a 40+ year old actress to get a role in Hollywood than it is to get a job here in Silicon Valley.

The irony is the fact that as technology has progressed so has the aging process, due mostly to the ever-increasing radiation and stress caused by the UVA, UVB and blue-light emissions from the sun, electronic devices and digital screens (i.e. TVs, computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets).

A study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity in Allure Magazine, suggested that exposure to blue light might stimulate the production of free radicals in skin, which can accelerate the appearance of aging, contributing to photo-aging, wrinkles, a worsening skin laxity, and hyperpigmentation.
12758562-haxtons-non-surgical-rejuvenation Why the demand to look young in Silicon Valley is becoming more crucial than Hollywood

haxtons-non-surgical-rejuvenation

With the average American spending over 11 hours in front of a screen, according to a recent Nielsen’s Company report, it’s no wonder why 30-something and even 20-something year olds are pounding on the door of leading anti-aging expert Richard Haxton. “In this age, to be taken seriously within the job market, the ‘fashion’ look – as it is known in the anti-aging and entertainment industries (i.e. Botox, fillers and surgical methods), is no longer marketable,” according to Haxton.

“Organic rejuvenation is the most effective means of reversing the aging process without evasive surgical methods. My clients in technology come to me seeking a natural method away from Botox and fillers so that they can achieve greater career longevity.”

As one of Haxton’s executive clients notes, “In Silicon Valley – it’s ok to be 40 as long as you don’t look it and nobody knows it.”

Having pioneered a proprietary method of the non-surgical facelift, Haxton has been internationally recognized for self-developing a unique form of natural and holistic facial rejuvenation.

Offering a non-evasive alternative to retain and renew a more youthful appearance through detoxification and regeneration, Richard Haxton has been at the forefront of most anti-aging breakthroughs.

Within the Hollywood scene, celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Scarlett Johannson have spoken about the importance of alternative holistic treatments that have provided beneficial results – and now it appears that the movement has transcended to the new capital of youth for both men and women – Silicon Valley.

“The way that we are aging is ever-changing, just like technology,” says Haxton, who is constantly innovating new treatments that keep him and his clients looking ten to thirty years younger than their biological years. “The good news is, it’s never to early or too late to look healthier and younger.”

While the beauties and brawn of Hollywood may be ushering in a sigh of relief now that award season is over and the pressure to look red-carpet worthy has tapered; Silicon Valley is still under daily scrutiny to look young.

Family › Help! Failed Paternity Test Is About To Wreck My Marriage by Opinionated(op): 8:43am On Mar 13, 2019
This is the story of a man whose reaction to a failed paternity test is about to wreck his marriage, what advice do you have for him?

My wife and I have been married for 10 years. We met in college, and she has been my best friend for almost 14 years now. She is beautiful, supportive, kind, classy, and all around amazing as a wife.

We went through a really rough patch about a year ago, mostly due to issues on my end. However, she told me she was pregnant. I was overjoyed. She told me she would only keep it if I was 100% in on the baby and the marriage, I said I was fully committed, and we kept the baby.

As time went on, I became increasingly insecure about whether or not the baby was mine. I did the math and thought it was unlikely it was mine, on top of having a gut feeling. I was internally agonizing over this for months, and after the baby was born, I could barely even hold him because I was so convinced he wasn’t mine.

I told my wife I wanted a paternity test. She was upset but told me to get one if it would ease my mind. The test comes back two weeks later and it says I am not the father.

I’m absolutely livid. I had an out of body experience. I stormed into our house and just let loose. I felt like I couldn’t stop myself, I was completely broken in that moment. I cried and screamed and asked her what I did to deserve this. I absolutely never laid a hand on her.

The whole time, she’s just sitting on the couch, trying to comfort the baby. This made me even angrier for some reason, so I kicked her out right then and there. Told her to pack her bags and just get out.

She calls me the next day and tells me that I deserve to know that the baby is mine, and asks me to get a paternity test from another company. I figure I have nothing to lose at this point, and another paternity test can only help me in a divorce, so we get one at the company she suggested, and I sent a third to another company, just to be sure.

I get the results from one and they say I am the baby’s father. I wait a few days and don’t say anything, then get the second set of results, also confirming I’m the father. I feel like the weight of the world has just been lifted off my shoulders and I can finally be the dad I want to be.

I call my wife to give her the good news and she tells me she’s not moving back in. She says she’s disgusted with how I acted by asking for a paternity test and my reaction to the false one. She tells me I can come see my son, but she will be filing for divorce.

I don’t think my reaction was over the top for a man who thought he was being lied to about one of the most important things. I never showed any sort of violence and I was so emotionally broken at that point. I know how it must have looked to her, knowing that I was the father, but I don’t think she’s seeing it from my perspective. I’m planning on discussing it with her later and trying to convince her to work on it with me when I go see my son. AITA for reacting in this way to what I thought was an enormous deception?

Health › New Study Proves That Short Bursts Of More Intense Exercise Is Better For Weigh by Opinionated(op): 1:10pm On Mar 05, 2019
For a long time now fitness enthusiasts have been looking for the most efficient way to burn fat. Well new research, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, has analyzed results from all the previous studies to reach a definitive conclusion that bursts of high intensity interval training (HiiT) are more effective for weight loss than longer less intense periods of exercise.

In fact, the research shows that people following a HiiT routine see 28.5% greater weight loss than those performing lower intensity interval training.

https://i2.wp.com/www.opinions.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Exercise.jpg?resize=650%2C488

Elliot Bendelow, a Dubai personal trainer with over a decade of experience in helping clients achieve their weight loss goals, commented, “HiiT is defined as cardiovascular exercise which involves repeated brief bursts of intense effort, interspersed with recovery periods. When comparing the weight loss results from HiiT regimes compared to longer continuous and moderate intensity workouts, I definitely see better results from my HiiT based clients.”

The studies showed that those doing HiiT lost on average 1.58kg (3.48lb) compared with the 1.13kg (2.49lb) lost by those doing lower intensity workouts.

The results seem counter intuituve to many people as most gym goers still expect to lose more weight simply by working out for a longer period of time, even if it is at lower intensity levels. This was evident by a poll taken by GymNation on its members, which showed that 68% were of the opinion longer and lower intense periods of exercise would burn more fat than a more intense but shorter HiiT session.

Elliot Bendelow went on to state: “There are two explanations for this. Firstly, the real magic of HiiT, is that it results in continued energy expenditure in the 24 hours after you stop exercise, something known as ‘After Burn.’ Hard to believe but you continue to burn calories even after you have stopped exercising! Lower intensity training doesn’t product the same After Burn effect.”

“Secondly, after a HiiT session, you may be less hungry as your appetite is reduced due to the effect vigorous exercise has on your hormones.”

However, Kate Austin a Personal Trainer at GymNation, which is one of the best gyms in Dubai warned, “Whilst HiiT is great for weight loss, it may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those who are completely new to fitness, as it may increase the risk of injury and impose higher stress on the body and muscles.”
