@ Dejia; kept wondering what BDG was. Tot its BSG: brewers spent grain. Anyway, its free in ilesa. All u have to do is tip d attendants and they load your truck at the brewery. I buy from a middleman who gets from nigeria breweries here in ibadan or sometimes I buy the already dried one @ about N11k/tonne. |
Is there any1 who does AI and is in ibadan or its environs? Would really love to rub minds. For now what I do is put my oldest boar next to pigs I want to mate to induce heat. It works like 75% of the time but it means having extra boars to service as many as possible within the same period. |
@ Lagbaja; hope I can answer even though the question wasn't addressed to me. Sows coming on heat individually is very annoying. Controlled breeding is so much easier; mating, drugs, diet etc. I've been looking at the option for awhile but haven't been able to lay my hands on any of the drugs. |
@ Excelsior. Its true that u don't need to see som1 before entering into agreement. But outright sale is different from rent. Since u have a written agreement, then go ahead and follow the terms. Afterall, there are lots of witnesses to how negligient the chap has been. I wish u good luck with an amicable resolution sha. |
There is a yoruba adage that says I shouldn't judge som1 else in absentia. We can't say what he/they may be facing so let's give them benefit of doubt. I don't think any reasonable person will want his hard earned money to disapear. I'd suggest that you keep trying to get in touch to know what d problem is. Legally, its too early to do anything so all u can do is wait. As a compassionate person, if there are suggestions u can give the staff on ground to help them weather the storm, please do. I'm sure u met the person before u entered into agreement so u av an idea of his character. |
@Excelsior; You haven't shed any light on the nature of the tenancy. Are they owing you or u are just concerned about the welfare of their fish? |
eazeefix: 90kg is textbook standard in more developed countries where supporting infrastructure are on ground yes and fine but here your can breed @45-60kg becos the gilt will still be growing during pregnancy. I bred some gilts at 80kg and got nice results no farrowing issues but had to police them to avoid crushing of the piglets.@Eazeefix. Thanks alot |
@Henrimoto. Dunno wat ......is so I can't say yes ![]() But as far as Targus' farm is concerned, I'm still a learner o ![]() |
koolsammie: Does anyone know where obasanjo piggery the farm is in ibadan?Obasanjo farms is in ibarapa. You can call this number for assistance locating them. 08129901118. @ Atmfarm: sorry about your loss. Feeding has been discussed extensively. Check the last 3 pages. If you have more specific questions though, feel free to ask. I'm sure there are lots of people willing to help. |
@Emmyvet; We all learn more each dey o bros. Lemme chip in abit sha . Easy cleaning is done using ur gutter provided @ construction. You flush all waste into it and it flows to d next pen where d process is repeated. Outside d pen, there are different options.som1 mentioned a biodigester for making biogas. Or u can use it as manure for crops (if u av). If not, just try and spread as thinly as possíble on the ground. Aerobic decomposition doesn't produce much odour. The pungent smell comes when the air doesn't reach the dung & that occurs when its heaped. As per labour needed, it depends on u the scale of ur operations. Just work out how long it takes to clean each pen then decide on how many people u need to function efficiently. |
lagbaja: I got them for N15k each. They were large white breeds@ lagbaja; That seems pretty cheap. Ready to cross gilts are usually sold @ a premium. N15,000 divided by N300/kg is 50kg. How big was your. "About to cross"large white? I usually cross from 90kg above or am I waiting too long? |
My farm is off ife-ibadan expressway so I just asked around there. |
@Lagbaja; I'v lagbaja: Pkc has between 14 and 19% crude protein. Cassava has 2.6% crude protein ( it is primarily the source of energy). They are currently the cheapest and most available of all the feed materials. Pkc is sold at about N23 per kg. we get our cassava at N16 per kg. by modifying the pkc to 60% , cassava 30%, and maintaining blood meal at 6 to 8%, you will achieve close to 17% crude protein in the piglets meal.@Lagbaja; Retail price of dry brewery waste in ibadan is between N11-N15 per kg. I had to confirm earlier 2day because I was surprised when you said whole cassava is cheaper than brewery waste. Mayb the price is location specific though. I've been using spent grain for years but I had to confirm your analysis. |
@ Lagbaja: Makes sense then. I'd like to try afew of your camboroughs when you are ready for sale. Hope u'll keep us posted. ![]() |
@ lagbaja; why increase P.K.C to 60%? I thought we were talking about the protein not being sufficient for piglets. |
@ Lagbaja; Sorry sir but I believe nutritional requirements differ with age and condition (pregnant or lactating or fattening). While your formula will work,@ a stage it might be unnecessarily expensive, especially when it comes to protein as pigs generally need less of it as they grow. I used to have a guide chart that shows nutritional contents (%) of different food items and also requirements for different stages in a pig's lifespan. I've been searching for it for days. Will post it as soon as I find it. |
@Targus. Wow! Apologies for my earlier post then. All I can say for now is well done! When I growup, I wanna b like u ![]() |
@targus: Did u mean 25 boars or 25 sows? If u meant boars & all you want to do castrate & raise them, then I guess its ok. If on the other hand u mean 25 sows, then I admire your courage.but I will advice you start a little smaller. You have to learn how to care for your pigs adequately all through pregnancy and after giving birth. Starting with 25 sows can be extremely challenging. Since u are already constructing, just bcareful to avoid some common mistakes (dimensions of rooms etc. Also, don't 4get not to make d floor too smooth, pigs don't can't handle slippery floors very well). |
No prb. We are all here to learn. What questions do u have so that som1 can answer and every1 benefit? Some of the issues you should take of are; 1. Location; somewhere you can comfortably rear pigs without people complaining. Also, consider feed source and adequate water. 2. Construction; size of rooms with feed & water throughs. Don't forget waste outlet too. 3. Stock; buying your weaners/ growers 4.Care; Feeding & cleaning of ur pigs. Also, in the beginning you might need the services of a vet for consultancy (or if you have an experienced hand close by u can take advantage of that) till u r comfortable administering d different injections by yourself. 5. Market; this is prbly the most important but its not much of a problem. As of now, the demand for live pigs exceeds the supply so no worries on that count. Just don't forget that the prices are more or less fixed so b cost consious. |
Repitition |
@ Henry. Lol. Relax, hormeiza was just protecting himself against another data loss. ![]() On the issue of feeding, an alternative to the use of dry cassava (peels or whole) is the use of spent grain or brewery waste. You can use it as a replacement to cassava in roughly the same ratio as specified above by lagbaja. |
@hormeiza In the spirit of learning, I think its best you ask ur questions here 1st, so every1 can benefit. But when d need arises, I'll b sure to give it to u. |
Thank you very much sir. I'm following diligently 1ce again. |
Hurray! Was actually 1dering how to get in touch with u after the data loss. I hope the offer for free consultancy still stands when the dry season commences. |
@Farmtech: yes, it is. Keziehenry: Which of the breeds of pig should i go for also like how much will a piglet cost.@Henry: the breed of pig u should go for depends on what ur target is (ie are u breeding for sale or for offspring). The duroc is generally accepted to b better for meat production while landrace are better mothers. This doesn't mean that some duroc won't have more piglets than landrace sha o. Each breed has physical attributes distinguishing it (the landrace has floppy ears & longer body while d ears on yorkshire (large white) are erect.) Color also varies. Price of weaners (usually frm 5-8weeks) is usually frm 3k.depending on breed & who is selling ( I heard Obasanjo farms sells for as much as 30k ). I'd advice you budget like 10k for each weaner sha, for good stock. |
@ lagbaja. 9cely said. @henry: lagbaja has given an elaborate tutorial. Be careful when it comes to your feed mix; he has recommended bloodmeal. Some people will tell u its too expensive; don't mind them o. Also, don't forget he said u shld dry ur cassava (u really dont need to peel) because of the poisonous acidic content when fresh. |
Keziehenry: tnx so much. Pls is pig farming profitablLol @ ur post. Almost all businesses are profitable really. Rearing pigs either for the offspring or for sale (or both) is profitable as long as you can keep down your costs relatively. I said "relatively" because its not just about going for the cheapeast alternatives but rather making informed choices. |
Single buyer preferable. Total amount is N910,000, less commission. |
