PoliticsLockdown ‘is Essential’ – Buhari Pleads With Nigerians To Stay At Home by Oracle55(op): 7:34pm On Apr 11, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said lockdown measures are “essential” to defeat the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria and urged citizens to “observe restrictions on movement where they are in place” during the Easter holiday.

Buhari made the comments in a statement released by Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu.

The President also said the lockdown will last as long “as our scientific advisers declare they are necessary.”

“For those who suffer most egregiously” during the lockdown, Buhari said the government was ready to help assist with grains and distribution of small cash payments.

“No elected government could ask more of the citizens of the country that elected them than today we ask of you,” the President said. “But we must ask you – once more – to observe restrictions on movement where they are in place, and follow the instructions of our scientists and medical advisers: stay home, wash your hands, save lives.

“We ask you to listen and follow public announcements via the mass media for instructions as to how to receive this government support – and learn of more public assistance in the coming days.

“All that the Government is asking you to endure is because nowhere in the world today is there any known way of defeating this pandemic. There is no vaccine. And that means there are choices to be made: between continuing as usual, or accepting the restrictions even when they come with unintended consequences.

“But at this darkest hour, it remains our duty to offer you the full and unvarnished truth: This is a global pandemic. 210 countries and territories across the globe are affected. We cannot expect others to come to our assistance. No one is coming to defeat this virus for us.

“Instead, the defeat of the virus in our country will be in our hands, alone. We cannot wait for others. We can only depend on ourselves now. And so we must – and we will – end this outbreak ourselves as Nigerians, together.”

PoliticsEaster: ‘think Long Term’, Sanwo-olu Says Lockdown Has Not Been Lift In Lagos by Oracle55(op): 7:13pm On Apr 10, 2020
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has asked Lagosians to avoid the spread of fake news, saying that the movement restriction has not been lifted.

Governor Sanwo-Olu while appealing to residents of the state on his Twitter handle to spend their Easter celebration preached the importance of social distancing.

He said, “This weekend, the sacrifice of staying at home and social distancing is required to stop the spread of #COVID19.

“The true meaning of #GoodFriday and #Easter is the power of sacrifice.

“Avoid fake news, the lockdown hasn’t been lifted. Think longterm,

“The Federal Government has announced a public holiday, do spend time with your loved ones AT HOME”.

The Lagos Governor recommended the use of technology for Christians to use this Easter period.

“We are thankful for technology, I will be worshipping virtually with my family on #Easter Sunday. Kindly say a prayer for all our health workers.”

PoliticsBayelsa, Taraba Relax Lockdown Few Days To Easter by Oracle55(op): 1:00pm On Apr 09, 2020
The Bayelsa State Government has relaxed the COVID-19 lockdown few days to the Easter celebrations to enable Christians mark the event.

Governor Duoye Diri who is also the Chairman of the State Task Force on COVID-19 made the announcement on Wednesday during a briefing at the Government House in Yenagoa, the state capital.

According to him, churches with large congregation are to hold services with not more than 50 members at a time.

He also directed that smaller churches to conduct their services with no more than 20 members during the Easter celebration.

Speaking further, the state government asked residents of the state to observe the social distance rule as well as provide running water, soap for washing of hands and handkerchief for sneezing.

Similarly, the Taraba State Government relaxed the COVID-19 lockdown to enable residents of the state mark Easter service.

State Governor, Darius Ishaku who had earlier given the order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 said the relaxation on the lockdown will be effective from Thursday, April 9.

He noted that markets, shops, and other places of business are allowed to operate between 8:00 AM to 2:00PM daily, instead of the 6:00AM to 6:00PM.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hassan Mijinyawa, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Mijinyawa said Governor Ishaku is not unmindful of the hardship the lockdown has caused many families.

He explained that both human and vehicular movements are also allowed during the period with caution to avoid large gatherings and social distancing.

The state government noted that the lockdown remains a necessary step that must be taken to protect lives, while appreciating residents of the state for their compliance.
