I propose to start a thread on discussions on the value of PhDs and Doctorate degrees. Some PhDs take up to at least 3/4 years of intensive research. Is it worth the time and effort? Having just completed my masters degree, I'm considering pursuing a phd out of my passion for teaching and research. But in the context of the Nigerian situation, is this a worthwhile venture? What are the benefits of and odds against having a phd degree? Please let all in the house who are either interested in a phd or currently pursuing one comment on this. |

Thanks buyaka2010. Thinking outside the box, beyond what we are taught in our schools. The desire for innovation--- That's what we need to drive Africa. We need to motivate ourselves. I believe most of us in this forum are youths, hence we are the strength of Nigeria (physically and mentally). We need to take this nation to great heights through innovative discoveries not only by talking about it, but also by doing. And we don't have to wait for our leaders, they've not helped us very much. Just like we've been doing in this forum, we have been sharing our thoughts and ideas. I want us to take this further. I propose that we put our intellects together to develop an innovative software, maybe an operating system for Nigeria. Let us form a community of developers and do something great. I solicit for ideas. Let us suggest what we think we can develop, create a plan for it and build it. What do u guys think about an operating system (maybe a unix/linux distribution develop by Nigerian community)? I'm also thinking about other ideas. Please feel free to suggest, then we can all agree on one project at the end of the day. |
"Be the change you want to see". You want innovation, what stops you from taking the initiative? Its true that we are not doing enough here in Nigeria, but we cannot move forward unless we stop talking and take some bold steps. Please do not be too quick to condemn CS departments in Nigeria. Examine yourself, if you are not a cs student/graduate, what innovations have you contributed to your field? You should know that computer science is an abstract discipline and what is taught in universities are concepts like automata and complexity, computer architecture, discreet mathematics, etc. I can assure you that we are making some progress, though slow. With strong will and passion from Nigerians like you, we can compete with and beat our counterparts from America, Europe and Asia. "Look inwards, you will get everything you really desire" |

Back to the original question, In my own opinion, Linux is an excellent platform for programming (I use OpenSuse, so I'll vote for it). Generally, the best platform for an application/software depends on the type of application you want to build, the language you are comfortable with, your target users, etc. If you program with Java, u can use any operating system and get same results. Java programmers do not worry much about platforms anyway, thats one reason Java is very popular. If you are building an application that is targetted for windows users, then your best bet would be any windows platform using any .NET language. If you are building games or multimedia applications, then Windows/mac would be just ok. Other than these, I'll recommend Linux. Since Linux is very similar to unix, I believe what's good on linux is good on unix |
@ I-GURU I've a friend who bought his copy of Java: How to Program by Dietel in Benin (Mission Road). If you know anyone in Benin, hook up with the person and get a copy. Cheers |

@ onanugaf Could you post a link to the webpage to download the pidigits.zip file, or upload the file in the forum? Maybe we can help you if you do that. Secondly, must your solution be implemented with Python? Well, I think you should be more concerned with developing an algorithm for your solution than searching for a coded solution (in Python). cheers |

@WildVivian congrats. when did you do your interview? I did mine on thursday 29th oct and I have not heard from them. |
The best way to improve your writing skills is to read some journals, magazines, newspapers, etcetera. Then try to summarise what you read. Try to keep a daily journal where you record events and your thoughts. When reading take particular note of new words, their meanings and spellings. I believe you would improve if you have enough discipline to do all of these. All the best |

does anyone in the house know how much BATN pays for their management trainees. I am asking because I am currently working in an insurance company in Calabar and I was invited for the test. I want to know whether It's worth forging ahead as travelling to Lagos for several interviews would be expensive for me. For everybody that was invited for the interview, wish you the best. We are closer to our dreams. Merci, |
