..

Why do we always have news of tanker explosion in Nigeria?

I have checked other western nations extensively, and I can't find this reoccurring menace.

When something happens once, you can overlook, but when it becomes consistent with loss of lives, one has to very critical.

One thing I know, we pay zero attention to safety in Nigeria. These tankers are carrying very volatile products and should be subject to routine checks.

How are these tankers built? Are there compartments inside tankers to reduce volatility? Do drivers undergo routine checks for leaks or cracks?

Tankers are high risk vehicles, and should be subjected to very very strict regulations before they hit the road.

This guy say western countries even here in west Africa you can't hear that shit only in the zooo you hear that kind news

The judiciary should hasten Kanu case and sentence him to “cruel death by hanging” and use him to tell the USA to stop supporting terrorism and meddling into Nigeria internal affairs.

After reconfirming, I think USA acknowledge Kanu is terrorist, so I think that is fine. They are just saying he also has a right just like every criminal until they are sentenced. It is just the journalist writing nonsense headline.

Well, Ivory Coast used to have blackouts and grid collapses (one bad one happened there in 1984) , then in 1993 they did two things

1.Privatised the power sector

2.DId something Nigeria did not do...they let the power sector charge its own prices, and nothing like bypassing meter.

The result is basically, power supply in Ivory coast improved. And improved, and after inital high prices, more and more investment flowed in and prices became 'cheap;

Even then, compared to Nigeria, Ivory coast pays something like 92 naira per kwh.

Nigeria has wahala because we think power is cheap. THus a combination of the following

1. NO cost reflective tarrifs

2.People not paying for power (as high as 58% of some customers in some areas)..and this includes the government (Aso Rock owes AEDC lots of money)

3. Poor subsides that cannot meet the needs. (Nigeria needs 3.7 tr naira in subsides, it can afford less than half of that).

All the above add up...to low or zero profits, inability to pay for things like gas , and bad power supply. Also, transmission cannot fix itself (the siemens project is sponsored by government and loans, not by TCN raised income)..because they rely on discos for money...and because of the above 3 reasons , discos are not raising money

You can disagree with me, and call me names, but what the government has done and is doing to the power sector is the equivalent of you being forced by government to sell a loaf of bread you baked at a cost of N1800 at N200 to help the poor. You won't make enough profit to keep your bakery running. Baking bread, and thus power is not cheap. It can only become cheap if subsides and price controls are eliminated...meaning investment flows in, and there is enough cash to make things better.
In Ivory coast government provide meter for every room not house oh then you pay for the meter instalmentally till you finish paying it becomes yours am presently here so you recharge your light can Nigeria government give every room meter in Nigeria which is not even possible I mean every room not house but they won't do that because they know there is no light with that they can't steal from the people anymore how can someone be paying for darkness
Politics › Re: Electricity: FG Targets 6000 Megawatts By End Of 2024 by Orch1981: 3:36pm On Apr 23, 2024
nairalanda1:
They can do that because both countries allow their power sector set the prices that the power sector wants. Egypt had a subsidy in place, but it was removed several years ago.

Also, SA has a diversie generation portfolio...not just gas, they have nuclear and hydro. Even then, SA Is having blackouts right now.

Nigeria's problem (And I am not here to excuse APC, attack PDP or whatever, thank you ) boils down to the fact that the government sets prices for the power sector, meaning they cannot make sufficent profits to fix things. Then the power sector is owed billions by government (some 1.3 trillion naira ), and the general public (greater than that)...simply because people do not pay their bills, and excuse it. Including your government too. And when the government sets a bad example, the people follow.

Add the fact that since the late 1970's, the government has been expanding power supply to everywhere in Nigeria...with the result that the grid got overloaded (until 2019, there had been no new investment in the grid since the 1970's)...and damaged. Part of why we have blackouts ad grid collapses.

At the end, decades of making power cheaper for the people, means the sector cannot fund or fix itself or raise enough money to do so. People not paying their bills makes it worse. The gas companies refuse to supply gas to discos because of nearly 2 tr in debts.

But anytime people point out the lack of a cost reflective tarrif, NIgerians abuse and shout at them. Well, all I will say is, you won't run your business well if government set your prices.

Ivory Coast used to have similar problems as we did, until 1993, when they privatised power, and allowed a cost reflective tarrif to be charged. And here they are.
And is very cheap here in Ivory coast

Germany is an industrial nation, that is why they have a working currency, and a strong currency. They have a diversifed economy and a tax to gdp ratio that is higher than NIgeria.

NIgeria has 80% of our economy based on oil. SO, if oil prices fluctuate, we are in deep trobule. (And no, I am not defending the government. This is the story of our life since independence).

We can't manage our currency because we are a dutch diseased economy. We too rely on one surce of income. That's why I don't rate any of your leaders highly at all, including this current one . Every year, we don't do anything to remove ourselves from oil.

If we became an exporter of manufactuered goods and services, had a tax to gdp of over 40% and did not just do oil, by now we would be a strong nation, naira would be strong, and mayhaps, we would have a domestic industry that can fix our power sector, instead of us calling siemens.

The problem with you guys is that you people think I am making excuses for government and for the power sector. I ain't. Just pay the money that is needed, and we would get power. Power is expensive. Nothing to do with corrency (which government manages badly anyway, by being reliant on oyel).
Lies power is never expensive if am lying go to Ivory coast orghana and see how cheap power is with 1000 cfa you have light for more than a month depending on your appliances but steady power supply come rain sunshine there is power
