IMO, ( am no expert) , the need for spirituality by the white is geared towards a heightened level of consciousness, so that they can peep into the extraordinary, thereby making it materialize. Before getting to this level, they did worse things, but their environment become favourable for free thinking. That is education tempered with patriotism.
