Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), has awarded N9.2 million contract for the supply of five pure breeds of Friesian bulls to boost animal insemination at Kadawa Insemination Center.

The center is located at Garun-Malam Local government area of the state.

KSADP was supported by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

The project Coordinator, Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, announced this through the project Communication Specialist, Ameen Yassar, in a statement on Friday in Kano.

He said that the contract was awarded to Hamjik Agric Plus Limited.

Mr Garba-Muhammad said: “Friesian cattle produce large quantity of milk and their male calves can also be fattened to produce good quality beef.

“You may be aware that Kano has two Animal Insemination Centres, one in Kadawa and the other one in Makoda.

“Our project will equip and operationalize the one at Kadawa to enable it to inseminate 25,000 cows per annum, beginnin


“That is why we are providing the bulls,” he said.

He noted that Artificial Insemination (AI) was an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) used globally to deposit or store semen directly into a cow or heifer’s uterus.

Mr Garba-Muhammad said that has several advantages over natural mating, which included reducing sexually transmitted diseases among cattle and improving genetic quality of livestock.

According to him, the insemination strategy would also go a long way in improving the livelihoods of pastoralists and cattle breeders, considering the increasing need for dairy products and beef in the state and the country at large.

“This initiative is part of the project’s objective to contribute to improving food and nutrition security as well as reducing poverty in the state,” he said.

Lebanon’s army says Israel fired 12 artillery shells at the Wadi Hammoul area, causing no damage or casualties.

The Israeli military said its artillery shelled southern Lebanon after two rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory.

Israel’s army said in a statement on Tuesday that aerial defences intercepted one of the rockets, and the second fell in an open area. No injuries or damage were reported

The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, said its radar detected rockets fired from southern Lebanon towards Israel just before 4am (01:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Subsequently, Israeli artillery fired towards Lebanon, the UN force said.

Lebanon’s army said Israel fired 12 artillery shells at the Wadi Hammoul area, causing no damage or casualties. The army said its units there had found three launching pads for grad rockets in the al-Qulaylah area, one of them with a rocket prepared for firing that was subsequently disabled by the army’s specialised units.

Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said in a statement that Lebanon was responsible for the overnight rocket fire and that “Israel will act against any threat to its sovereignty and its citizens”.

“We will not allow the social, political and economic crisis in Lebanon to turn into a security threat to Israel,” Gantz said.

Lebanon has struggled with an unprecedented crisis, including an economic meltdown that has raised concerns of a surge in violence there.

UNIFIL said it was in contact with military officials in Lebanon and Israel to “urge maximum restraint” to avoid further escalation. Both the peacekeepers and the Lebanese army increased security in the area and launched an investigation, the mission said.

In May, rockets were fired from southern Lebanon several times in one week, according to the country’s military. Israel’s army said the rockets landed in the sea.

On May 14, a Lebanese man was shot and killed by Israeli troops after he and others tried to cross a security fence on the border with Israel while protesting in support of Palestinians marking the 73rd anniversary of the Nakba, what Palestinians call “the catastrophe” that befell them in the war against Israel in 1948.

Syria attacks
The incident on Tuesday along the Lebanon-Israel frontier came hours after a Syrian military official said Israel carried out air attacks near the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. The Syrian state news agency said air defences intercepted most of the missiles in the attack.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor that has activists on the ground in Syria, said the Israeli raids targeted weapons depots belonging to Iranian-backed armed groups operating in the region.

The Israeli military rarely comments on these attacks.

Israel fought a 2006 war against Hezbollah, which is the dominant force in southern Lebanon and possesses advanced rockets. The border has been mostly quiet since then.

Lebanon has been run by a caretaker administration for nearly a year, while its currency has collapsed, jobs have vanished and banks have frozen accounts in what lenders have called one of the most severe financial crises of modern times.

A Moroccan air force plane touched down in Israel’s Hatzor Air Base on Sunday morning, reportedly to take part in a multinational Israeli Air Force exercise later this month.

The highly irregular landing of the Royal Moroccan Air Force C-130 cargo plane at the Hatzor Air Base near Ashdod was visible on public flight-tracking software, where it was quickly spotted by a number of amateur radar watchers, one of whom shared the information with The Times of Israel.

It appeared to be at least the second time the RMAF cargo plane landed in Israel, the first time being in 1996 when it touched down at Ben Gurion International Airport, according to aviation enthusiast David Weinrich, who tracked that flight at the time.


The C-130 cargo plane landed in Israel on Sunday for a military exercise scheduled for later this month, in which several foreign countries are due to take part, according to the Walla news site.

The Israel Defense Forces refused to confirm the report or the visit.

“The IDF cooperates with a variety of foreign nations and militaries, while carrying out exercises, high-level meetings, and joint research and development [projects]. We will not comment on cooperations with a specific country,” the military said in a statement.

After a 20-year lull in diplomatic relations, Israel and Morocco renewed their ties late last year, amid a wave of normalization agreements with other Arab countries.

While Jerusalem and Rabat did not in the past have full relations — with diplomatic offices in each other’s capital instead of embassies — they maintained close official ties until Morocco suspended them with the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000.
