LEEEEGOOOOOOOOOOO
My Oga, abeg no vex na only the number 5 me dey interested in:

Let 'x' be the usual time. If the usual rate is 1 unit, then the unusual rate is 5/6. Balanced by the distance:
1*t = (5/6)(t+40)
t = 5t + 200 all over 6
cross multiply:
6t = 5t + 200
6t - 5t = 200
t = 200 mins or 3 hrs 20 mins. . . . . . . . . . .OR

If the ratio of the rates of unusual to usual is 5:6, then the ratio of unusual to usual is 6:5
t = 40
5t = ?
5(40) = 200 mins

:. His unusual time is:
6t = ?
6(40) = 240 mins which oga oladoya got. . . . .

Sorry for joining you late, busy tinz. @rahsywire how did you know I wasn't sleeping?

Mr Calculus: A fisherman's day is rated as gud if e catches 9 fishes,fair if 7 fishes & bad if 5 fishes.He catches 53 fishes in a week & had all gud,fair & bad days in d week.How many gud,fair & bad did d fisherman had in a week?
(A)4 gud,1 fair & 2 bad days.
(B)3 gud,2 fair & 1 days.
(C)2 gud,3 fair & 3 days.
(D)4 gud,3 fair & 2 days.
[plz show ur workings 2 o]
My boss, the above isn't maths ooo. . . .na puzzle! Abi make I prove am? Ok. . . .LGT

You gave options, so from the options a fast thinker would say:
option A says 4 gud fishes + 1 fair fish + 2 bad fishes = 7 i.e 7days. Or 4(9) + 1(7) + 2(5) = 53 fishes....that's it

:. As for me, I'll say it can be permutated like this and arrive at the answer too: 3 gud + 3 fair + 1 bad = 7 i.e 7 days. Or 3(9) + 3(7) + 1(5) = 53 fishes....But the later isn't among the options, therefore one can go for option A...

QUESTION
A MAN IS X YRS OLD WHILE HIS SON IS Y YRS OLD. D SUM OF THEIR AGES IS TWICE D PRODUCT OF THEIR AGE. IF D PRODUCT OF THEIR AGE IS 675, FIND D AGE OF D MAN
@boladearo, this was exactly the question I gave you on 2go some weeks ago.
LGT. . . . .

From the first sentence:
x + y = 2(x - y)
x + y = 2x - 2y
collect like terms:
x - 2x = -2y - y
-x = -3y
divide both sidez by (-):
x = 3y. . . . . . . . .(i)

From the second sentence:
xy = 675. . . . . . .(ii)

Using substitutn method, substitute x= 3y into eqn(ii):
3y(y) = 675
3y2 = 675
divide both sidez by d coefficient of y:
y2 = 225
y = 15. . . . . .that's the boy's age

:. Substitute y= 15 into eqn(i):
x = 3(15)
x = 45. . . . . . .the man's age

Check:
sum of ages equals their difference:
45 + 15 = 60
2(45 - 15) = 60

product of their ages:
45 * 15 = 675

You saw a shirt for 97k. U didn't hav d cash, so u borrowed 50k from ur mom & 50k from ur dad = 100k. U bought d shirt & had 3 k change. U gave ur dad 1k & ur mom 1k & kept d other 1k for urself. Now u owe ur mum 49k & ur dad 49k = 98k + ur 1k = 99k. Where is d missing 1k? (Introduction later pls)
NB: There's no missing 1k!
The problem lies with the method you used to calculate. You loaned money from two different individuals. In this case, the amount you used to buy the shirt is odd, you then added the money you borrowed from them to get one bulky money. When returning, you get the bulky money together and divide, which you clearly didn't divide :. Let's divide the 97k by two:
: 97k/2 = 48.5k

Remember you've given each of them 1k before. So, that accounts to:
=> 2(48.5k + 1k)
=> 2(49.5k)
=> 99k
Finally, add the 1k you took to yourself:
=> 100k....

Mr Calculus: log(x^2+7x-2)base2=log(x^2+3x-6)base2+log8base4..
log(x^2+7x-2)-log(x^2+3x-6)=3/2log2base2..log2base2=1,
log(x^2+7x-2)base2/log(x^2+3x-6)base2=3/2.
.logbase2 cancels each other
(x^2+7x-2)/(x^2+3x-6)=3/2..
.cros multiply
x^2+7x-2=3/2(x^2+3x-6)..
multiply both by 2
2(x^2+7x-2)=3(x^2+3x-6)
2x^2+14x-4=3x^2+9x-18...by colectin lyk tems u'l get

Thanks, I'm grateful sir. Greetings too!
EducationRe: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Ortarico(m): 9:53am On Jun 11, 2013
doubleDx: Solution

Log(x2 + 7x - 2)2 = Log(x2 + 3x - 6)2 + Log84

Log(x2 + 7x - 2)2 = Log(x2 + 3x - 6)2 + Log2322
Log(x2 + 7x - 2)2 - Log(x2 + 3x - 6)2 = 3/2Log22

Log22 = 1, also we have same bases on the LHS, so we apply the law of log here to yield=>

Log{(x2 + 7x - 2)/(x2 + 3x - 6)}2 = 3/2 * (1)

Eliminating Log2 yields =>

(x2 + 7x - 2)/(x2 + 3x - 6) = 2^(3/2)
(x2 + 7x - 2)/(x2 + 3x - 6) = √23
(x2 + 7x - 2)/(x2 + 3x - 6) = 2√2
x2 + 7x - 2 = 2√2 (x2 + 3x - 6)
x2 + 7x - 2 = 2√2 x2 + 6x√2 - 12√2

Collecting like terms yields =>

x2 - 2√2 x2 + 7x - 6x√2 + 12√2 - 2 = 0
x2( 1 - 2√2) + x (7 - 6√2) + 12√2 - 2 = 0

Applying quadratic formula to the above =>

a = ( 1 - 2√2), b = (7 - 6√2) and c = 12√2 - 2
x = {-b±√(b2 - 4ac)}/2a
x = {(6√2 - 7) ± √[(7 - 6√2)2 - 4(1 - 2√2)(12√2 - 2)]}/2( 1 - 2√2)

√2 = 1.44 approx, substituting and evaluating yields =>

x = {(6(1.44) - 7) ± √[(7 - 6(1.44))2 - 4(1 - 2(1.44))(12(1.44) - 2)]}/2( 1 - 2(1.44))
x = {1.64 ± √(2.69 + 114.91)}/(-3.76)
x = {1.64 ± √117.6}/(-3.76)
x = {1.64 ± 10.84/(-3.76)

Spliting =>

x = (1.64 + 10.84)/(-3.76) or (1.64 - 10.84)/(-3.76)
x = 12.48/(-3.76) or 9.2/3.76

Rounding the values of x to one decimal place yields=>

x = -3.3 approx or 2.4 approx
Phew! Same in my work sheet!!

oladoya: here comes the answer... (1) log9-log3+log9 since they are in diff base just represent it with letter so we have A-B-C so lets solve A... Log9base3=a, then let the base have a as its power then we have 9=3^a, 3^2=3^a equate the base we have a=2.... Then lets take B... Log3base27=b, 3=27^b, 3^1=3^3b equ base, we have b=1/3.... Now C..... Log9basert3=c, 9= 3^c/2 we have 3^2=3^c/3 equ base we have 2=c/2 cross mult. We c=4 then remenber A-B+C = 2-1/3+4=17/3.... 2nd question (logx)base2-(logx-1)base2=2... According to the rule take a log(x/(x-1))=2, x/(x-1)=2^2, x/(x-1)=4 cross multiply you have x=4x-4, x-4x=4, -3x=-4, x=4/3...... No3 solving it quadratically we have x>1/2 or x>-4
