Arsenal have announced the signing of Brightongoalkeeper Mat Ryan on loan until the end of the season. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta announced earlier this month he was in the market for a goalkeeper. And he has chosen Australia international Ryan as the man to provide backup to No 1 Bernd Leno.
Ryan has not been in a Brighton match day squad since the 3-0 loss at Leicester on December 13.
The 28-year-old started the first 11 Premier League matches of the season but has been replaced as No 1 by Robert Sanchez.
On the deal to bring Ryan to the Emirates, Arsenal technical director Edu said: “Mat is an experienced goalkeeper, a proven talent in the Premier League and has also played many internationals for Australia.
"Mat will further strengthen our squad with his experience and knowledge of playing at the highest level.
"Following Matt Macey’s recent move to Hibernian, Mat will provide very good competition and positive support to all our goalkeepers and we are looking forward to him integrating quickly into the set-up here at Arsenal.”
Ryan has made 121 Premier League appearances since joining Brighton in 2017.
And manager Arteta says that helped in his decision to sign him.
Arteta said: “We know Mat very well through his performances with Brighton in recent seasons and he brings additional quality to our squad.
"Mat has very good Premier League experience and has played over 100 times in the league, which is something that will benefit us greatly on and off the pitch.
"We welcome Mat to Arsenal and look forward to working with him this season.”
Ryan, who will wear the No 33 shirt, has revealed that he grew up as an Arsenal fan in Australia.
“There's still an aura of surrealness to it all, to be honest,” Ryan told Arsenal.com.
“I’m really proud, it's great and it's hard to sort of put into words the emotions and feeling that this is becoming a reality.
“All those mornings as a young kid in Australia, getting up to watch the Champions League games and all that at four o'clock in the morning when I had school and these types of things.
"The support back in the Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp days, all these sorts of things, to now be here fills me with a great sense of pride and achievement."
Arsenal allowed Emiliano Martinez to leave the club last summer, joining Aston Villa for a fee of around £20million.
The Gunners brought in Iceland international Runar Alex Runarsson from French side Dijon to replace Martinez.
However, Runarsson has put in a number of shaky performances in the appearances he has made in cup competitions, including a shocking error in the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City.
Runarsson could leave the club on loan this month following Ryan's arrival.
Arsenal are also reportedly close to signing midfielder Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid.
The Gunners are claimed to have beaten Real Sociedad to the signing of the Norwegian.

Ozil's contract is up in the summer and he has previously vowed to see out the mega-money deal he signed in January 2018. The playmaker earns £350,000-a-week and will earn loyalty bonuses if he stays past the January transfer window.
Initially the playmaker got stuck between the lines choose between MLS DC United and Fenerbahçe who we're interested in him but early reports shows Ozïl was to fly to Istanbul to see to an agreement.
About an hour ago reports shows Mesut Ozil has signed a 3.5 year contract with Fenerbahçe of which Arsenal will pay his first 6 months salary till the summer.

I vividly stated that Nigerians aren't organized to differentiate between real protesters and hoodlums - not even in a protest that was all about police operations. Protesting against police, despite the need, is a perfect avenue for hoodlums to take over and they expectedly did when the protest was prolonging too much than necessary. You remember the end results right?

Until we all understand that brash approaches aren't necessarily the best approach to issues, we will still be here fighting the same basic problem over and over again.

Btw, what right are being trampled upon? We asked for Sars to be disbanded, it has been done. Policemen lost their lives as much as innocent protesters. A judicial panel is also currently sitting on issues that arose from the protests. If you think anarchy (anarchy because the average Nigerian is never organized to conduct a long-term organized protest) is the best way to fight a government in power, then best of luck in your attempts.

I don't believe some people are in Nigeria and can't figure out what's really happening in the country.
If you think people who had the real spirit of the protest in them or people who were really aware about the real course of the protest were those who got involved in vandalism, looting and killing of police men then you need reorientation chief!
