Henry120: "S-300 systems?" seems the russians are also preparing for a conventional threat.
Anyway, no matter how we look at it, Russia's present shows the Obama administration lacks a coherent foreign policy strategy. It's quite shameful really. the Russians will always deploy air defense systems around their foreign airbases either there is a real likelihood of a conventional attack or not. The Russian embassy was attacked by pro-western anti-Assad fighters and Russian forces have promised to go after them. Latakia hold about 500 Russian marines and that number may rise to 800 before the end of the month. |

africaken: boys and girls you are now witnessing the geopolitics shift of power ,the once developing china now causes tremors on the health of the global economic while Russia after the collapse of USSR is now once again affecting the trend of global conflicts the geopolitical struggle in the middle east can only be won by a neutral power. The Arabs do not really trust Russia, they know that Russia will only give it assistance because she wants to show her influence in the east to the west. She started supporting the middle east during the Arab Israeli conflict from the signing of the 1955 Syrian arms deal with Czechoslovakia( then under the USSR) but before 1967 the USSR was already negotiating for a ceasefire deal with Israel and US without Egypt knowledge. The ceasefire deal was in line with "Detente" ( a cold war agreement between US and Russia )but it was not with Egypt's interest.Russia agreed all the same to it and stopped the supply of arms to Egypt. In the 1956 and 1957 war Moscow was very willing to sacrifice Egyptian interest for what she described as "greater global considerations". She held Cairo back from a pre emptive attack on Israel in 1956 and Israel invaded the Egyptian Sinai, she only supplied arms to the Arabs so she would be allowed to build missile bases in Egypt and Syria in response to what NATO was already doing around her, and when she realised that her Bases will be the target of Israeli air campaign on Egypt and Syria if the war continues she started working towards a ceasefire without the consent of Egypt. There is little difference between the old soviet union and the new Russia, they still build their policies around the same old cold war principles. |

Litmus: You probably mean Nigerians have culture that informs thire behaviour but you probably wouldn't understand what this means either ... he won't understand, because you are the only one with Brain here? Oga keep calm. You ve insulted your intellect with the first comment you made. I am afraid of yur kinds of persons in a way that you may never understand. We are fighting a war that we will win. Our methods are different but our goal is victory and it is the thought of that victory that spur us on. We are soldiers not because we chose to, but because we wouldn't let the motherland stay defenseless. If after the insanity of combat i see victory. Then i would be ready to dance any banana rebel styled monkey dance. Cus it is what my forefathers did and who am i not to follow in his time worn foot steps. I am a Nigerian soldier. Litmus: What happened to discipline and military formality in the Nigeria army? Why all the bushman singing like some babana republic rebel outfit? Also, if we, as so-called Nigerian civilians, mean well for Nigeria, shouldn't we self-censor ourselves, be our own quality-control, if you will, before posting footage for the parousal of online international community. you may be a very poorly literate fellow with self esteem nd identity issues. Where in the world do soldiers not jubilitate? Do you know what good it does to their moral and how much of a bonding factor it is for the men. I believe the only reason you are saying things like this is because you ve only seen the CNN and BBC side of most western armed forces. They do all this things and even worst. They call rock stars with poor moral records to entertain them, oh! Its ok for white armies to get entertained by Rock stars but its not cool if our battle hardened soldiers are jubiliating in local jingles. Bros watch your self oh. To be civilised you don't have to be educated. |

I read some of the articles from the motleyfool and warisboring website and i see a lot of bean counting being done. Just like the writer said the Russians have the best airdefense system in the planet. And they have a long term history in the area of air defense. An example is the 1956 Arab/israeli War where Nasser asked the Russians to take charge of Egyptian airdefence and which they did with outstanding success. |

Henry240: Nobody willfully shares their Economic secrets, more so when it is military tech. However there could be "collaborations", thing is the other side would also need to bring in "something" significant to the partnership.
For us in Nigeria, we only need more private participation in the Armouring, Defence and Electronics sector. A wholly state run Defence Industry won't work, no business run by the state works. If we can grow one " ASELAN" type company in the electronics sector, additional companies in the Armouring sector to improve competitiveness and opening up of the Arms& Ammo business. If we can do this, i fail to see how we cannot build what can become the largest Defence industry in Africa. most of the skilled guys that can deliver in this areas are still serving under government ministries and were government sponsored. E.g the rocket guys at Epe, the guys that joined in assembling our Com Sat @ NASRDA this guys are sitting on their palm under government pay. |

However, the U.S actively blocked every move we made including tipping of South-African Authorities to block a legitimate arms contract which included upgrades for our Light Utility Helos.
However, we did up-grade our Agusta and Puma Helicopters with Rocket pods and FLIR do you have pics of the up armored A109's |

jln115: Trust me mate, our leaders are far from perfect, after all T.I.A.(This is Africa). As with any other country in Africa(or the World for that matter) our Defence force/industry suffer due to corruption as well, for exp thanks to our 1999 Arms Scandal we lost out on an additional Frigate, Sub and a couple of Gripen and Hawk jets.
But you have to remember South Africa fought the biggest war this continent has seen since WW2, also through in the fact that we couldn't import weapons from the West due to sanctions or import from the east( Basically the enemy), We had no other choice but to develop our own. No other African country has been placed in the same situation, were it was forced to develop its own defence industry, there was always the option to import from either the East or West, SA had no such luxury.
Its not impossible for African countries to develop their defence industries, there has been a lot of progress in Nigeria and Ethiopia especially, but I think its a bit unfair to compare the defence industries of these counties to that of South Africa's which had a 30 year head start. regardless, we can no longer afford to patt Africa in the back for failing in areas where everyone else is succeeding. |

jln115: With Denel's acquiring of BAE land systems, the chances of replacing our Casspirs and Mambas with RG series vehicles look better than ever, I would personally love if the RG 35 is picked for project sepula. Anyway getting back to the point, I agree 100% with the RG32, it would be a great vehicle for our Recces, and looking at your pics it seems the ingwe system has already been integrated on to the RG 32. Denel remain the only Africa based defense industry that is putting African product in the theatres of modern warfare. What you guys have done with your defense industry is nothing short of a wonderment considering the continent where all this is coming from. While the leaders of other African states are grappling for government funds to steal and public policies to sabotage in their own interest. Imagine a Africa with up to 4 Denels |

Vietnam as beaten France, America, Cambodia and China in wars. Don't knock them. They care far more about there military than with SA or Nigeria. African defense industries do not have a serious future. African militaries are gradually forgetting about the possibility of an armed face off between any two nation in the continent, they feel the world outside piety them to much to fight them. To the string pullers in the MOD we live in a very peaceful continent, with the known threats only coming from rag tag militias. |
