this news is too good to miss.

Four Russian warships have struck 11 targets in Syria with 26 cruise missiles, from the fucking Caspian Sea... 1500km away

Warships are the Buyan-M class and they're firing SS-27 Sizzler missiles.

Footage too! And it is fantastic.

Your so called agubugubu, the fake researcher thought there will be no time a soldier will ever walk without a helmet in a red area or zone refering to how he's been ignorantly commenting about how SANDF soldiers are not wearing their helmets in what he thought was a red zone. I deliberately picked one of his pictures where the soldiers appeared not to have worn helmets to indirectly show him that it is not always soldiers would wear helmets even if they are in a red area. Within that red zone there are areas which have been stabilised, where soldiers can walk without uncomfortable helmets just to ease their head of a heat created by helmets. Thank you.
appreciated.

what is your definition of a "Red area". Analyse that picture and tell us why you think it is a red area. Otherwise you are just stabbing the air in the dark, with the hope that you hit something. Right from the beginning of this thread we have always had one issue and that issue is the attribution of new definitions to terms to suit our arguments. Some people even go as far as creating new terms and terminologies while some scums go behind the scene to edit international open source information banks such as Wikipedia. Please tell us why that is a Red zone. That picture could have been taken from anywhere in Nigeria.

mI17 is quite big and cumbersome... if you are trying to get into a position to winch someone off something (like a crevass in a mountain or building in a built up area) or land in small spots (air-ambulance) you want something smaller and more nimble.

MI17 is a fantastic troop transport and is much better suited to that role.
most emergency agencies do have dedicated choppers with large capacity for medic duty. I guess that was why we got it in the first place.

You are looking at the same picture I am?

Sure they have body armor and helmets... yes, they are well equipped by Nigerian standards.

But I dont see any squad LMG's, or MGL's, or any comms equipment, or any recioless weapons etc I also dont see any webbing (battle-harnesses) meaning that they are likely missing personal equipment such as feild rations, water, medical supplies, grenades/smoke/flare as well as maps/compasses etc

Sure, you could say "but they are dismounted infantry, their vehicals are carrying the equipment"... which is also BS because what will you do when your vehical is knocked out and suddenly you have 8-9 guys without food/water/medical supplies and spare ammunition.

Hence why I said, poorly equipped.

Indeed, most 3rd world nations are not equipped as well as the SANDF when it comes to personal equipment
you ve seen our soldiers in the field with comms and MGL. The picture you referred to was a picture of police officers inside a force office compound. What would they be doing with all that?

The African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC), a temporary standby force capable of responding quickly to crisis situations in Africa, is expected to be operational by October, South African President Jacob Zuma said at the conclusion of his working visit to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on Thursday.

The ACIRC will serve as an interim measure ahead of the establishment of a permanent African Standby Force, which was originally expected to be operational by 2015. Zuma proposed the concept of the ACIRC at last year's African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the proposal was endorsed.

http://www.southafrica.info/news/international/au-270614.htm#.VgqjuHqqqko#ixzz3n8g95ofl

ACRIC exists only because ASF does not and has the majority support of the AU.

Bah told delegates the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC) would become part of the ASF. This means ACIRC, which SA Army Chief Lieutenant General Vusi Masondo said would be operational this month, effectively has a shelf life of six months if the December 2015 deadline for operationalisation is adhered to.

I must agree with you in almost all of your submissions, particularly as it relate to "power status, and geopolitical battle bone-vis national ideology and foreign interest. But a nation like SA does not have to be a major power or super power before it can meddle in places like Syria. A diplomatic assertion, an economic decision or a political stance, goes a long way in entailing solidarity and defining positions in the wake of economic, political and security continental or intercontinental issues. For instance, SA decision to halt the sale of coal to Ukraine at the early stage of the Ukrainian-Russian fracas, is one example of such identification, even though Jo'bourg denied that such decisions are not political.
The fact is, if SA is to get involve in Syria, it musn't be by way of military deployment, since the much bigger players now entering the conflict already have such at their disposal. A certain decision-economic or political, will be enough to define her stance. Bulgaria didn't have to get directly involve in Syria when it blocks Russian military transports from use of its airspace, but as a matter of fact, she was indirectly involved and defined it's position just by that single Political Decision that entails where her priorities and allegiance lies. This much will definitly be the case with SA should the need arise.

On power, i just don't have the time to debate on what quantifies power, what qualifies as power or what are the yardstick for determining political power among nations? Like i said above, i quite agree with your summation and Kissinger's definitions of power and super power status and so on. But the truth is: "power" as use in this context, goes beyond having military bases spread accross the globe. That is, power goes beyond quantities of military hardware. America's super power status today is not just because of its blue water navy or military might, but its ability to influence the global economy. That is the real power.
Aside that, every other thing is in the relatives and comperatives analogy as it relate to other key players in technological sense.

On Nigeria, there is no disputing the fact that Nigeria remains the backbone of Africa reliance, especially when you consider her foreign policy which is centered on Africa as the focal point of interest. The human, material, economic, and financial sacrifice this nation has made in ensuring the status quo accross he continent, tentavely defines her position as the giant of the continent; the only eye sore being corruption and leadership problem as it relates to the ecomic and political well being of the nation.

Be that as it may, one thing is now certain; and it is that the Syrian crisis just starting. It is far from over!
we can also be very sure that the crisis may take the dimension of the 1956 Arab Israeli war if the west continue to support the Rebels. Ladies and Gentlemen let us sit back and watch the most volatile political event in the Arab East since the 1956 Kadesh Operation and tripartite aggression.

First, we are in Congo - who do you think invented the FIB and is its biggest contributor??

Second, our "war games" are part of our preparation to get the whole ACIRC (African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises) operational.

Currently, we are the only African nation to meet our responsibility with our formation being ready since December last year.

Currently, our contribution consists of:

- a motorised infantry battalion (9 South African Infantry BN)
- a composite mechanised car squadron (Ratel-20 infantry combat vehicles from 1 SA Infantry Battalion, Rooikat armoured cars and possibly Ratel-ZT3 tank destroyers from 1 Special Services Battalion)
- a light artillery battery (1 Light Artillery Regiment with 120 mm mortars)
- a light anti-aircraft battery (10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment with Starstreak missiles)
- a troop from 2 Field Engineer Regiment
- a troop from 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment
- a composite signals squadron with elements including communications intelligence teams.
- a mobile air operations team (MAOT)
- two Gripen multirole fighters
- two Rooivalk attack helicopters
- two Oryx medium transport helicopters
- two A-109 light utility helicopters
- two C-130s.
- a medical task group and a level-two hospital
- Military Police platoon.

This formation, as we speak, is being held at almost constant readiness - at MASSIVE expense to the SANDF.

This contribution stands on-top of the ~1,500 men, 3 Rooivalk, 2 (3?) Oryx deployed under the MONUSCO FIB or the other ~1000 deployed under AMIS/UNAMID.

Furthermore have also made available our facilities at our Battle School in order to host the largest military exercise in Sub-Saharan Africa (post-1994) in order to help the rest of the continent get their formations deployment ready.

Third, you must be incredibly naive to think that Nigeria could lead anything in the DRC. Not only is the DRC a SADAC member but it is at the cross-roads for major regional (Uganda, Rawanda, Tanzania) and global (Western/Chinese Business interests) powers while, furethermore, the MONUSCO deployment has a very clear plan and stratergy that they have been employing which is beginning to pay dividends. Quite simply you would be trying to host a party in someone else house.
nigeria sees the DrC as southAfrican sphere of influence and the continued influence of foreign interests in the conflict is only reflecting poorly on the capabilities of SADAC and its members. Nice pics though.

I see. But if you can recall, i did mentioned goepolitical and economic reasons. The world currently is been broken and fragmented into smaller economic units/blocks, with the likes of the EU, the SCO, BRICS,etc; as among the prominent ones. The formations of such blocs goes a long way in defining the ideology of a nation, and in shaping it's foreign policies, as well as where lies it's intersts and loyalty.
Now, when one or two member nations of such enonomic and geopolitical bloc get involve in a continental or intercontinental political or economic bruhaha, especially one that threatens the peace and security; some, if not all of the remaining member states, tends to get involved, covertly or overtly, as a show of solidarity and mutual identity and support in good and bad times. And since SA is a member of the BRICS, with two of it member nations already involved in the War in Syria, it won't be surprising to see the Diamond Nation move in similar steps, especially when you take into consideration that the war in question is about an enemy that is of great threat to the national security of any nation. What is happening now to Libya, Egypt, Mali, and Nigeria, is a wake up call to any sensible and security cautious Nation in the Black continent. And one sure way to defeat terrorism is to pre-empt them; and this may include taken the battle to where you can find and fight them before they have the chance to fight you. This is the primary reason China is stepping into the fight against ISIS in Syria.

thus, S.A will gain alot in terms of securing its national security against terrorism on the long run, and also set the records straight that it would not tolerate any foreign diabolical schemes and plots against it's people. I believe we all know that Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al Shaabab in Mali, are foreign sponsored elements design to achieve specifric aims! Well, i am having the creeps that ones they are through with Nigeria and Egypt, since Libya is already "mission successful", the next port of call might just be S.A: especially now that the US have "warned" it of a possible terror attack. And We all know how they will warn you first (as if they are truely concerned) before they hit at you!

Is the same old game!
nations are guided by their immediate or regional interest in defining their policies. Southafrica has no business in Syria. All the Brics nations in Syria or about to enter Syria are great powers(india), super powers(russia) and soft powers(china). southAfrica is not yet a great power so her interest cannot at this Time be transcontinental. There are small powers, great powers, soft powers and super powers and more recently hyper powers(a post cold war concept).

Russia seized to be a super power since after its disintegration and the fall of communism. Why? Because to be a super power you have to have a global interest, foreign military bases and the totality of resources to pursue your interest anywhere in the world( Henry Kissinger 1973 ex US foreign minister). When Russia abandoned communism she lost the only one factor that gave her a global interest which was the spread of communism as written in the communist manifesto. She lost some of her territories and most of her mil bases and she became a great power but some of us political analyst still chose to call her super power, China is a soft power by virtue of her economic dimension of power, while India is regarded as a regional power or great power by virtue of her regional wide interest in the Asian continent ( Henry Kissinger: a great power is a power that have the totality pf resource to achieve her interstate which are regionally limited). So how do you describe south Africa?
Despite the fact that she does not have the resources to achieve any regional wide interest, she does not even have a regional wide interest, if she does what is her policy towards al shabab, boko haram, Mali, Sudan, DRC, Libya?

Unfortunately Africa can boast of only one great power and that is Nigeria. Our wide reaching pro African interest can be seen from table mountains in the south to the horn of Africa in the east. We have service men deployed in Liberia, Mali, sudan, Somalia and our force men have served as military head of staff in foreign African countries. We have not received a single penny from anyone in all our pro African efforts, we have the totality of resources for pursuing our interest anywhere in Africa. The Americans and soviet saw that when we mediated in the Angola crisis. 8 MIG21 we sent to Angola from Nigeria and 2 C130 were permanently shuffling between Angola and Nigeria supplying the pro nigerian rebel group in Angola. I would end this by saying nations know their status in world politics and cannot take actions beyond that status.

what is SA going to do in Syria? Is the threat of al shabab, bokoharam, crisis in DRC and Sudan, are they not enough for southAfrica to define her foreign policy agenda with recourse to her continental responsibilities? What does she have to gain in Syria?

Russia is playing an old chess piece of the US. They intend on forming a coalition against ISIS instead of fighting it alone, why? To win a wide reaching support for the pro- Assad propaganda. If Russia is attacking alone it would be easy for the US and EU to tie it to vested interests, but if she is being supported by China and Iran and probably soon India, then it would become very hard for the west to wage a successful propaganda war against them.

craziebone:
now, when you say Africa should take over the peace process, the question i would ask is: who will lead that kind of peace process? Military operations around the world under the auspices of some multilateral organizations are always lead by a particular country as the coordinator. So in this case you are proposing, who will spear-head it?

The countries that will come to mind are probably South Africa and Nigeria and maybe, some other East African countries. But just like the western countries, these African countries also have their personal interests. Remember that we now live in an Africa where the same spirit of pan african solidarity, that existed among our independence and a little bit post independence leaders, is now lost; and there is now a kind of subtle rivalry going on among the countries.

With this in mind, don't you think such an African intervention would be a bit difficult to put together in the first place? And if it does go through, don't you think when the peace is won, the different countries (the bigger ones) would begin to want to eat the 'gains' of their sweat? And that could result in probably a partitioning of the country just like Germany before the fall of the Berlin wall but this time, it is not goin to be along the lines of ideology, but vain big-boy superiority. How exactly that would turn out for the DRC itself and its people, is what i cannot tell. It could go either way, ood or bad.

But all the same, i believe an African led peace initiative will be the best for the DRC. Although, current African leaders and their countries are begining to be become selfish, we still somewhere and somehow, hold this pan African brotherhood attitude to look out for the ood of the other countries. I know Nigeria still has this somewhere in her psyche.
you are right. Every nation has its own unique interest. NigerIa may not want to head a peace process in DRC at this time, I think southAfrica is the only unengaged African giant at present. Let her go to CAR. Nigeria is busy, Egypt is busy, while south Africa is playing war games. It takes more than war games to lead Africa. You have to be there, in the middle of the heat. We have done this right from our first day as a republic and we are still doing it Burkina faso is a very fresh example.
