For failing to honour invitation, Senate threatens to have Police IG, Idris, arrested


The Senate has threatened to issue arrest warrant against the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, for failing to appear before its ad hoc committee investigating allegations of abuse of office against him.

The Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Senator Francis Alimikhena, issued the threat when the IGP failed to appear before the committee on Wednesday.

Alimikhena, who is also the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, said the IGP was summoned on October 16 to answer allegations made against him by Senator Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi).

Alimikhena said rather than honour the invitation, Idris’s lawyer, Alex Iziyon, wrote to the committee informing it that the matter was already in court.

He said, “Nobody, including the court, can stop the Senate from carrying out its constitutional duties.

“The separation of powers guaranteed by law made it explicit that the Senate cannot be prevented from carrying out its constitutional duties by any other arm of government.

“If the IGP fails to appear on November 7, the committee would invoke Section 89 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to compel him to appear.

“He will be summoned again and must appear next Tuesday, 7th of November.

“We got a letter from his lawyer, Alex Iziyon, that he will not appear before this committee. He said the IGP has already gone to court and appearing will be sub judice.”

He said there was no way the IGP’s appearance before the committee would amount to contempt, as the committee was set up before he went to court.

“We cannot be stopped. No court can stop us from carrying out our duties. There is separation of powers. No court can stop us.

“There are issues about virement in the 2017 budget which Misau also raised. We need him to respond to these allegations.

“We will invite him again and he will appear before us. If he fails to appear, we will invoke Section 89 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.”

Senator Misau had, while testifying before the probe panel, claimed that the IGP purchased two jeeps for the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.

He also alleged that the IGP misused over N120bn generated by the Force in one year.

Misau also alleged that the Police boss impregnated a serving police officer and hurriedly arranged a marriage ceremony in Kaduna.

However, Idris, through the Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, dismissed the claims as “unfounded.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that women are more reliable in politics than their male counterparts.
The former President however said that women suffered cultural and religious inhibitions thus depriving them of political opportunities to exhibit their potentials.
He spoke on Wednesday when the national executive and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists visited him at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The women journalists presented the ex-President with a Father of the Nation award during the visit.
Obasanjo said the task of building a nation could not be achieved only by men.
He said, “One of the best journalists that ever served me was a woman, and that was the late Mrs Oluremi Oyo. In politics, women are more reliable than men. When a woman says she is with you, you can really take it that she is with you.
“But if a man tells you he is with you and you catch him in another meeting, he will tell you it is politics. It should not be so.
“When a politician’s words cannot be believed, then you are turning politics into another thing. A politician must be a man or woman of honour that believes in morality.”
The National President of NAWOJ, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, said the visit was in recognition of Obasanjo’s belief in the unity of the country.
Omowole observed that the recent bad development in the country was due to disunity among the various ethnic groups.
She said that NAWOJ, as part of the effort to correct this, was planning to have a unity conference next year during which Obasanjo would be the chief host.
She also intimated the former president on the plan by NAWOJ to build 500 housing units in each state of the federation.
