Politics / Re: Family Reacts To Betty Anyanwu Purported Marriage To Akeredolu’s Younger Brother by oyatz(m): 9:13pm On Apr 06
Objectivist04:

Oga what am trying to say is that whatever she is trying to do is not a general Igbo ritual. It might be how they do it in her community but not igbo as a whole. For me it is a strange ritual. The only thing that will make a widow's family hand her over to her husband's brother is if the brother wants to marry her which we call "nkuchi" in Igbo language, though such is rare now and Betty is way too old for such as she already has adult children.
Nkuchi is mostly done when the widow is young, with tittle children or no child at all.

She never said the truth what she went to her village to do

You may not understand the culture of her hometown than her.

What you just describe as 'nkuchi' is also practice in Yoruba culture, the only difference is that it is the husband's family headed by the Family's Patriach that hand-over the widow to her late Husband's brother, cousin or any close relative to 'so lo po' meaning to re-marry her, raised children in the name of her deceased husband or take care of the widow and her young kids. Other family members are also expected to assist the woman by occasional gifts of farm produce and some may offer to take one of the kids to live with them. The Practice is however fading now due to westernization/ Pentecostal christianity.

It is a pervasive mentality. IPOB guys and protagonists of Biafra understand this phenomenon and exploit it to remain relevant. Every now and then, they scream that other Nigerians hate Igbos or that other Nigerians are the problems of Igbos citing all kinds of topics/ issues to buttress their points.

Interestingly, small groups like Efik, Ibibio, Annang, Ogoni and Ijaw who also experience the civil war don't exhibit such mentality.

Hmm, he has $1.2 billion personal money and he's not on Forbes list or is he a secret billionaire? cheesy

So if someone invest $800million in a business, it automatically means they have $800 million personal money?

When the GENCO becomes operational and start making revenues, then Forbes will start to include such as parts of his assets.

With the completion of the Project, the networth of Sepco-Pacific Energy Ltd (owner of Omotosho and Olorunshogo GENCOs) will sky rocket.

It is just like someone spending millions on an uncompleted building. It won't be counted as his worth but if the building is finished and rented out to banks, corporate organizations or even as residential apartments, then it will be counted as part of the owner's assets.

This question is baseless if you understand the fundamental issues.
The Nigerian engineers are equally good, but there's no foundation to achieve their technological prowess.
You should also ask, why is Nigeria not developed while the Western countries are far more developed?

The Educational system in Nigeria is NOT designed to make Nigeria developed but to act as appendage of the developed countries.

In our schools, students are thought
* to learn foreign languages
*what has ALREADY HAPPENED in developed countries, mostly with textbooks written by foreign authors based on their environments

Then students are examined on well they are able to MEMORIZE these theories and concepts.

This system create serious barriers to most Africans to fully understand and INTERNALIZE THE KNOWLEDGE of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), so real life applications of what the students are thought in schools is minimal.

The Overall Impact: EDUCATED Africans subconsciously become 'programmed' to believe that development must come from these already developed countries.

Our Plumbers, electricians, mechanics, welder, carpenters and many other artisans are mostly peoples who dropped out from the educational system and opted for informal training which is done in their mother tongues and based on practical learning of what they see daily in their environments which make it easy for them to come and understand the concepts.

Nigeria would be far more developed if our educated citizens also have the skills and practical knowledge of these artisans or if the artisans also have the education of the educated class=> We need to to redesign our educational system to provide a unique blend of both categories.

How many names are they going to write?
Can't they get the loans through another companies?

What you should be talking about is that a local content clause be added to the contract between Nigeria and the companies doing the jobs so that knowledge transfer can happen hence producing a generation of Nigerian engineers that can carry out similar jobs in the future and also maintain these ones. Don't be the ones badmouthing your graduates who end up running abroad and getting celebrated.

The problems of the educational sector can be traced to their foundation.

The educational system in Nigeria were designed by the British Colonial Masters to suit their Agenda I.e

To produce Clerical officers to assist in running the Colonial Gov't Offices
To produce graduates in Arts & Humanities: to learn how to behave and conform to authorities
To produce Health workers: who will man the hospitals.

The Colonial Masters deliberately prevented introduction of certain courses like

Law: they didn't want too many people to be aware of their rights

Science, Engineering and Technology: They didn't want the local people to develop critical minds that can make them independent of their Colonial Masters

Pharmacy: they didn't want Nigerians to start producing their own medicines .

After independence, these courses were introduced but based on faulty templates left by the colonial Masters. We suppose to have changed them.

Have you ever wondered that most of the houses in Nigeria were built by Artisan like Bricklayers, Masons, Electricians, carpenters, tilers and others, who had their training in the informal sector outside the educational institutions?

Most of the vehicles on our roads are serviced and maintained by mechanics who had their training outside the educational sector.

Most of the foods we eat are also produced by farmers ,who had their training outside the educational sector.

What did I corroborate? Graduates from other countries don't build metrolines, reputable companies do! There is no country anywhere in the world where graduates jump out of school and start building metrolines! However, there in a rich culture of knowledge transfer and capacity building which many of your graduates who "run" to those countries gain from. Some African countries don't tolerate Chinese and other foreign companies coming to carry out construction projects without using their country men. And foreign companies invest a fortune in building the capacity of their employees as opposed to the miserly attitude of hiring graduates without any training and expecting them to perform miracles because they are graduates which is common place here. Maybe we should take a queue from there. Don't make the habit of bashing anything Nigerian your favorite past time.

You are still missing the points:

It is not that graduates build Metrolines immediately after graduation or not but the ways the institutions were designed was not to produce solutions to Nigerian's problems. This isn't just about universities but the whole educational system.

The problem isn't just limited to the Educational Institutions but also the Policy makers in the Government and private sector.

In a Semi-Urban State like Kogi, Nassarawa and Ekiti, Dissertations done by Final Year Students are gathering dusts on shelves when they should be given tasks to do, contribute to the development of their environments and then write Dissertations based on their experiences or write some Dissertations that directly tackle the problems in their environments. The system, need not look like what is obtainable in Yale, Oxford or London.

You agains corroborated my observations.

Why do our graduates need to run abroad to be celebrated?

Why is it that graduates from our universities don't discover and formulate medications that can treat malaria and schistosomiasis which are our local health problems?

Why are our Engineers unable to produce communications gadgets or handles heavy construction works?

Universities in the USA, UK and Western European countries are set up to solve problems in their environments but Universities in Nigeria evolved as mirror images of these foreign institutions without conscious efforts to make them produce solutions to problems of Nigeria.

We need to overhaul and redesign our educational institutions to meet our peculiarities.

Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a remarkable man. Despite being the only biological child of Sir Louis Ojukwu, once touted to be the richest man in West Africa, Ojukwu abandoned his father and joined the Nigerian Army. His father would not speak to him for 4 years.

Personally, I don't think anything could have prevented the civil war, Igbos were tired of Nigeria and were determined to fight their way out if possible.

But had Ojukwu stayed with his father, had the civil war not been fought, there's a good chance Ojukwu would have inherited his father's vast business empire. That would have catapulted him to being one of the richest men in Nigeria

Ojukwu was man who wasn't interested in money. For many years he lived in a modest Bungalow on Pioneer avenue, independence layout, Enugu. It wasn't untill his wife Bianca had children that he built a much bigger house in GRA Enugu and moved there, and he didn't like living in a big house.

* Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu was NOT the only biological child of Sir Louis Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as a matter of fact, there were protracted court cases by the children over the Estates of the Late Sir Louis Ojukwu.

* Ojukwu couldn't have become one of the richest Nigerians simply by inherited wealth. Those who control key sectors of the economy 10 years after independence become the richest in the 1970s.

The educational institutions in Nigeria were NOT designed to solve problems of Nigeria but as 'photocopies of foreign bodies', thus graduates from Nigerian Universities often need to seek validations from UK, USA, Canada, Germany before being considered truly educated.

Nigeria has no power the dollar but has power over Naira.

When the exchange rate was $1= N180, the exchange rate was heavily subsidized by the CBN (meaning CBN was selling dollar to Nigerians below the market value).

The Naira will only gain further whenever Dangote starts sourcing its Crude from Nigeria and in Naira (not the rubbish Reno is writing)

How could Dangote be buying crude from US and you expect Naira to improve?
.

Importation of crude oil have lesser impact on the exchange rate than importation of refined petroleum products.

With time, about 80% of the crude oil will be sourced locally in Naira ,which will drastically reduce the demand for the dollar. Thus the Naira will gain strenght.

That's one angle. But I can't really think of any company that will want that much diesel at once. That's like 31 trucks or so.

I was thinking banks and factories but it'll be too much for them unless they pay at once and carry it in bits. Only a business or organization with large storage capacity will carry this much diesel at once.

That again goes back to the major marketers.

So many marketers can buy it. Even IPMAN can buy it and share among their members.

You don't know anything about marketing of petroleum products.

Many marketers can afford it (I am not talking of Ajadi & Sons Petroleum or Okorie Brosters Int'l Petroleum).

As for smaller companies, 3-5 Petroleum marketers can merge to form a bigger player in the sector.

Politics / Re: What Was Nigeria Producing When A Dollar Was 200 by oyatz(m): 8:19am On Mar 30
Yourprick:
People keep saying Nigeria should export more for the naira to gain, Please was Nigeria actually exporting anything when a dollar was 200 during Jonathan regime?? I'm curious 🤔

Nigeria was just collecting rents from crude oil explored and exported by several (mostly foreign) companies.

Out of the $money ,the CBN would sell dollars to people at a very low rate (e.g $1=200) that is below the market value. This meant that the CBN was subsidising the exchange rates.
This policy has been in place since 1973 when the Naira was introduced. The policy has it's pros and cons.

Pros: It enable Nigerians to access FOREX at low rates so they can import foreign goods or pay for foreign services e.g Hajj, Tuition fees in Foreign schools,Medical treatments abroad or even Holiday in The Bahamas etc
Cons: 1) With increased population and increased demands for Foreign goods/services, the CBN was unable to meet the demand for dollars at subsidised rates ,so they often increase the exchange rates e.g from $1= #0.56 in the 1970s
$1= #5 in 1986
$1=#21 in 1993.

However, not all those who needed the dollars got it at this rate, privileged elites who got it at 'official' subsidised rates sold it in the black markets at exorbitant rates.

By 2022, Nigeria was borrowing $1.5 Billion monthly to subsidised the exchange rate and it got to a point, no creditor was willing to borrow Nigeria money for such subsidies anymore.
