theres a reason why they are called 'low end' or budget models

not strictly true. every running application/service  consumes RAM and uses CPU cycles.

a large number of applications will launch modules by default unless disabled. install nokia pc suite, and it will launch everytime you start your pc. winzip quickpick , java runtime environment updater, adobe speed launcher, quick time task are just a few of the applications that are set to launch with the os on installation. its even worse if you buy a cheap acer or hp laptop. those come with so much preloaded crapware - AOL, vongo, hpcare, acer's dock . . .theres actually an article someone put up on it, how a sony vaio was slow because of all the preloaded crapware.

also, i am pretty sure the poster may not have the resources required to buy ram. i have almost maxed out my upgrade options

4gb ram, 500gb 5400 rpm hdd( the 7200 rpm hdd is a few mm thicker, and may not fit into my hard drive bay) 4gb readyboost. if i could upgrade my laptops cores . . .anyway, for a lot of us, no matter how highflyig your hardware is, we will still look for optimization tweaks.

note that one of the best ways to speed up a pc is to buy more ram

type services.msc at the run command. this will take you to the services tab. there are some services that can be safely disabled.

disabling services is not risky, but i advise that you note any service you disabled somewhere. some apps will not run/some hardware will not work with some services disabled.

if u REALLY want performance - kill all the bling on your syetm

click on my computer, elect properties, go to advanced, and select adjust for best performance

your system will look like windows 2000/98, but that will free up some ram

several applications that you rarely/never use are configured to run on startup when you install them.autoruns allowsyou to disbale any application from automatic startup

cleanmem

there is an ongoing debate on memory cleaners, but the basis of clean mem is diff. a lot of apps startup with a particular amount of ram, but they require a smaller amount of ram to run. cleanmem flushes this unneeded ram. it can be configured to run every 30 minutes.

meminfo:

all this does is show your used ram , which is v important as a guide to why your system is slow. alternatively you can use free ram xp pro, but that app is limited to 2gb ram (can't read above that)

ccleaner,

this will clean up your hard drive. the more space taken upon your harddrive , the slower your pc will be

you can dual boot .all you need to do is search the net for info.
let me also warn you- if the laptop was designed for vista, you may not be able to get drivers for some of its perpherals. a colleague recently bought a compaq with vista home basic. he was able to configure it to dual boot xp. however, no drivers for his usb ports. on the manufacturers site this was made clear.

another option i picked from one of the sites- you can opt to install MS virtual PC(freeware)and install xp on it.
