Newspaper and several online reports yesterday carried headlines that electricity tariffs were cut by a whopping 50%. This claim was based on a directive issued by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC. What the media failed to realise, is that the body of the NERC release made no reference to how much the new tariff was after its was supposedly cut. To understand how they got it wrong, one will have to look at the press released issued by NERC. Of particular reference is the paragraph that mentioned “50%”. The Commission has been listening to consumers and taking full account off the impact of high tariff on consumers and the Nigerian economy, has therefore reviewed the basis of the MYTO 2.1 assumptions and has determined that it is inappropriate to transfer to consumers collection losses that are controllable by DISCOs. It is the responsibility of the DISCOs to collect their revenue from their customers. Failure to do so should not be a penalty to customers who pay their bills. It is clear that removing the collection losses will lead to lower tariffs for consumers. The removal of collection losses from customer tariff has reduced tariff by more than 50 percent in some places. Please note that the reduction does not affect the CBN facility and its repayment. Now check the part that was highlighted again. The commission basically gave an example of how removal of collection losses can reduce tariff by more than 50% “in some places”. This is by no means a confirmation that electricity has suddenly been reduced to 50%. What the NERC DG was trying to say (which he didn’t explain well) was that assumption for calculating Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection losses ( ATC&C losses) is over blown by some Discos. ATC&C losses are basically targets that Discos are allowed to include in their assumptions when computing tariffs. They arise because electricity is a product that does not have storage ability unlike most inventories (like cars, books etc.), and as such when generated some of the energy gets lost through evacuation from the ‘Gencos’ to transmission by the ‘Transico’ and then some through distribution lines (wires and transformers) by the discos. They also must be consumed when generated unlike cars which you can keep and use whenever you wish. Whilst ATC&C losses are understandable and allowed, the ones that are due to a discos inefficiencies are not allowed to be passed on to consumers. The higher the ATC&C losses allowed to Discos the more it leaves room for manipulation by some inefficient discos making them load those losses via tariffs which customers end up paying . This is basically why NERC said some removal of collection losses (a subset of ATC&C losses which refers to discos inability to collect billed revenues) reduces tariffs by 50% in some cases. It doesn’t mean tariffs will be unilaterally reduced by 50%!!! Whilst most newspapers got it wrong, NERC has a share of the blame too as it gave out a press release without a definite figure of reduction or what the new tariff now is. This is why most believe the press release was rushed in a bid to score another campaign point for the President. The increasing number of job scams across the country is becoming frightening, from fake employers to fake recruitment agencies who are out to scam you of your hard earned money all in the name of giving you a job. This post is to enlighten you so that you will be careful and never fall a victim. At ngcareers.com we are constantly implementing new ways to filter out these scam jobs, but they are getting smarter by the day. Some even go as far as using our name to send out SMS invitations for interviews. As a job seeker you don’t have to be desperate, you have to be smart and on alert. The following are the 3 things you should consider to avoid being scammed. 1) Look at the job title/description Before applying for any job, you should look at the job details; watch the tone of the job description. In the past fake jobs advertisers don’t disclose the position or job title they advertise but recently many of them have started disclosing it leaving only few who still don’t. In event they disclose it, the job title are usually generalized with little or no specifics (they do this to get as many applications as possible). Watch out for Job title like Graduate Trainees, Customer Care, Marketing Executive, Graduate Admin Officer, this doesn’t mean that all jobs with these titles are fake but be extra careful when you see titles. On the other hand, the job descriptions are usually generic with no clear explanation on the roles involved in the job. Most of these fake recruiters/employers target fresh graduates and entry level positions (sometimes mid level) because they believe job seekers in this category are naive and more desperate. 2) Look at the company Name/details In the past fake job advertisers claim to be a company outside the country, sometimes they use valid company names but use email addresses or websites that doesn’t relate to the company. Recently, they have become more smart and daring, some go as far as using a registered business names. However, watch out for generic names like Global consult, Careerlink Consult, Human Resources Concepts etc As a job seeker, whenever you see a vacancy, look at the company advertising, if possible do a little background check on the company. Sometimes big companies use HR agencies to recruit, in that case research on the HR company and know if they have track record. Note some companies advertise vacancies anonymously so as to avoid external influence on the recruitment process. 3) Ask Questions before attending any interview If you are called for any job interview or sent a text message/email by any company that you are not sure of or that looks suspicious to you, politely call, email or SMS the company to get more information. You should ask about the company, the nature of the job and their location. However, you should search online before asking in case their information is already available. If you don’t get a reasonable response from the company or information about them or if they refuse to disclose any of the above information, kindly stay away. The ultimate aim of these fake recruiters or employers is to collect money from you or give you a slave job. However, which ever is the case, DO NOT PAY ANY COMPANY OR PERSON. Nigerians are at a very critical point, we have two very poor options to choose from. GEJ we know is incompetent, GMB from the look of things is no better. Comparison In all sincerity GEJ is a huge disappointment after all the high hopes he gave us in 2011 (his supporters then claimed because it wasn't his tenure, he couldn't do much after Yar'Adua's death because of some cabals. I bought the idea then, many also did). Now they are saying Boko Haram diverted his attention. Did he handle it well? No, he played politics with innocent lives that could have been saved. GMB on the other hand don't have any concrete plan (if he does we haven't seen it) on how to address the issue at hand. All he says is I will do this and that, he suppose to know how the government system works. (I have this fear that if he wins, Tinubu and his cronies will be the one running things just like Idiagbon did during his military regime). Good Points GEJ has done well in the Agriculture sector and the transport sector(rail and probably air transport). This is because he had the right people in that sector, he could have done well in power if he had let the former minister of power Prof Barth continue. GMB is very passionate about the country, judging from his speeches and body language. He looks patriotic too and seems determined to fix this country. Bad Points The biggest dent in GEJ's administration is the calibre of people running the show for him. He is surrounded by sharks and hawks, his decision making has been slow and wrong most times, he doesn't show that will or desire to actually change this country for good. GMB on the other hand is passionate about this country but he is also surrounded by questionable characters and doesn't seem to have any concrete plans on how to go about fixing the country. End Note GEJ is promising to do better in second tenure, but he has nothing to lose if he wins, nothing to spur him to work except his name which from the look of things he doesn't care about (Except he does now but is waiting till after election). He is still surrounded by questionable characters who are only after their pockets, he can never perform with all these persons around him. GMB seems a lot wiser to learn that one can't get to that seat without first dinning with some people. He feels he has an unfinished job to do (fixing the country) which he failed during the military regime. Moreover, am still disappointed that after contesting for same position two times previously, he has no concrete plans (or has not shown us). SOLUTION So what's the solution, here is my take. We know the two devils, and we have to choose one. OPTION 1: Vote on tribal or religious sentiments whatever is the outcome bear it. OPTION 2. On election day, pray and cast a lot, then vote. OPTION 3. Use deductive reasoning and logic to make a choice. OPTION 4. None of the above, abstain from voting. **NB** In all sincerity GEJ doesn't deserve a second tenure, if APC had a younger candidate with good track record GEJ would have even lost before election. GMB shows the passion and zeal but am not fully convinced he will deliver. We need someone with great vision, intelligence, charisma, and strength of character and patriotic too. |
