Jobs/VacanciesRe: Biggest Mistakes Companies Make On Their Job Postings And Recruitment Process by pacodas(op): 11:56am On Sep 22, 2014
bossmini84: Most of this job description are copied from foreign companies. Imagine a job where the require a web programmer with sound knowledge in mysql, php html and you want to pay the person 40,000 the applicant himself would just put these in his CV. Nigerian people deceiving people since inception.
Yes most companies/HR Managers don't actually know the skills they want for a particular position, they just search the job description for that position on Google and use it without checking if they actually need all that it contains.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Biggest Mistakes Companies Make On Their Job Postings And Recruitment Process by pacodas(op): 11:51am On Sep 22, 2014
majekdom2: I mean as an employer how do you know ? If truly you can tell who has got the most interest in your company , your employees wouldn't resign when they hear of better pay even as you aren't offering too bad when it comes to salary. I am of the opinion that if you truly wish to develop yourself and a company of interest , you would not resign because of a better salary. This is because you know what you want really and the future you want for that company with you in there.* note *am talking of good companies that know how to develop quality human resource , not majority of our Nigerian companies*
It's not easy at all knowing candidates that has interest in your company. But here are some pointers
* Most times they may not perform extremely well like the hot heads during interview but shows great enthusiasm.
* They are willing to start with something less than their worth if you promise to improve pay as time goes
* They don't hesitate much in accepting offers provided it's reasonable
* They are honest
* They don't lie in their CV just to impress you
* They know a lot about your company and the management, things normal outsider won't easily know without digging a little deep.

These few pointers may help but are no guarantee.

majekdom2: hehehhe.... lie lie everywhere . the employers lies about their company and job post , applicants lies about their skills and experience in CVs. The truth is most times , employers usually do not select the best candidate that can do the work. atimes that applicant that has got great enthusiasm to do the job is even dropped at the inital stage and then that which is just looking for somewhere to hang around is chosen. The latter leaves when there is a better opportunity. The question is how do you know who has got most interest in your company and is ready to take your company to a next level ?
It takes a HR/employer who knows what they want to get these people, but then you need to do your own part by being truthful about the job role etc

Jobs/VacanciesBiggest Mistakes Companies Make On Their Job Postings And Recruitment Process by pacodas(op):
This post was culled from Ngcareers Blog http://blog.ngcareers.com/4105/biggest-mistakes-companies-make-on-their-job-postings-and-recruitment-process/

There are numerous articles on resumes mistakes written by various employers, HR and other resources persons, however there are very obvious mistakes most employers make when posting jobs or in their recruitment process that most of these articles have failed to address. I have tried as much as possible to list some of them below.

Job descriptions are full of typos
Many employers do this (even some jobs posted on Ngcareers) and it is very bad, your job description should be typo free to help potential applicants understand the role required in the position being advertised and the steps you want them to take to apply. Some employer overlook this aspect because of the nature of the industry, they believe no matter the errors in the job details candidates will still apply, at the end they blame candidates for not understanding the job description. In our own effort we try to correct these typos where we can. But this is appalling.

Poor Formatting of job descriptions
Almost every employer/recruiter is guilty of this. Most jobs submitted are poorly formatted, this makes job descriptions hard to read and could make you lose quality applications. We spend several minutes reformatting various jobs published here on Ngcareers.

The length of some job descriptions/ requirements / desired skills is very unbearable.
Most NGO and government agencies are guilty of this, job details are extremely lengthy that you wonder whether this is actually a job description or an employment handbook. While your job description should be detailed, try as much as possible to keep it under reasonable length, to aid the job seeker fully understand your message when applying. Job descriptions between 300 words and 1000 words is ideal, at most keep it under 1500 words (my opinion).

Too short job details
Some SMEs are guilty of this, I don’t know if they think because they are small, their job description will be very small (some just post one line or few words). How do you expect the candidate to understand the role you want them to play in your company when all you wrote is just few words (e.g. “we are looking for a smart project manager, candidate must possess relevant degree”). Please try to add more flesh to your job description, it really helps.

Lying about Job Roles
Some companies notoriously lie about their job roles, when you are finally employed, they give you all the roles in the company, from errand boy to PA, from PA to customer service, from customer service to Sales/marketing officer; you begin to wonder whether you didn’t read the job description well. If a potential employee will perform multiple roles when employed kindly do them a favour by indicating it in your job details, so that they will know in advance what they are signing up for.

Lying about company values and culture
Most companies just list their values for listing sake, they are there just to look pretty and they hardly ever, if ever, practice what they preach. This is very bad, you can’t tell you potential employee that you value honesty and dedication and not show it from the owner down to the management. You can’t tell them you value your employees highly and still owe them salary or tell them that you train your employees periodically and never do that. It is good to try to practice what you preach, even if you don’t deliver 100%, 50% is better than nothing.

Deny a potentially good candidate interview due to minor typo.
Minor mistakes doesn’t indicate a candidate is dumb, try to overlook little mistakes and judge the candidate properly during interview. Humans are error prone including you, so try cut some slacks where necessary especially when the potential employees meets all your criteria.

Using Dumb softwares / programs that use keyword filters to filter applications.
It is not easy to go through thousands of applications without aid of a software, but some of these softwares / programs remove very good candidates who don’t fill their resumes with relevant and irrelevant keywords. Try and combine manual efforts with these softwares to get the best results.

Nawa ohh, this is really mind blowing!
BusinessThe World's Baddest And Richest Terrorist Organisations by pacodas(op): 12:59pm On Sep 18, 2014
They are the most feared and ruthless terrorist organiations currently existing with thousands of foot soldiers working with sophisticated weapons. So who and who is on the list?

1. ISIS

Also known variously as ISIS, IS, ISIL the Islamic state is the world’s current number one terror organisation.

Islamic State (ISIS) militants are taking in more than $3m (£1.8m) a day through oil smuggling, extortion, theft and human trafficking, say intelligence officials and experts. They now control several oil fields in Iraq and also make money from extorting cash through kidnapping.

ISIS are the baddest guys in terrorism! They are worth a whooping $2 billion.

2. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) - $450 million

The IRA is regarded as a top professional money laundering organisation. The group first started as a revolutionary force fighting Britain for Irish Independence and is now regarded as a terrorist group for the countless bombings and assasinations attributed to them during the revolt against British rule.

3. The Taliban ($400 million)

The Taliban is a famous terrorist organisation in Afghanistan, they make their money from drug trade, human trafficking, kidnapping/extortion, and even donations from sympathetic groups. The Taliban are responsible for a huge opium production operation in Afghanistan that heavily contributes to an estimated $70-$400 million that they rake in annually from illicit drug trade alone.

4. Al Qaeda ($100 million)

The Al Qaeda network became known all over the world after the notorious 9 11 bombing. At a time it was the world’s richest and most powerful terrorist organisation. Suicide bombing was one of their most favourite tactics; in fact they made suicide bombing become a popular terrorist tactic.

Osam Bin Laden, its leader (who was killed in a US covert mission in Afghanistan) became the most wanted man on earth after the September 11 bombings in the United States. Osama Bin Laden was already a multimillionaire when he founded Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is known to have widespread terrorist allies all over the world.

Jobs/Vacancies7 Tips For Faster Job Promotion by pacodas(op): 10:50am On Sep 15, 2014
If you need faster growth up the career ladder at your organization you need to take matters a little more in your hands and do some innovative things.

1. Make Sure Your Work is Measurable

When your work has indices by which your performance can be measured it will make it easier for assessment. In your weekly summary reports you can put up data that conveys clearly the impact and level of the work you have done.

2. Keep Your Work Visible

Following on from the above advice it could make a difference if you make subtle efforts to ensure that your bosses see your work and feel its impact. You could work your ass off but when the people that matter in your organization do not know it’s as good as you do little or no work.

Create and send weekly or monthly (whichever sounds better) situation reports to your immediate and higher level bosses. The key is to make the reports look purely informational (no hyping and unnecessary over bloating of your achievements). Always send feedback to your bosses on assignments completed.

3. Work as Hard as You Can

If you are new in a place one of the surest ways to cement your value and rise up the ladder is to put in your very best from the onset. Be the first to get in the office and one of the last to leave. Your boss will certainly notice your eagerness and enthusiasm. For the career person that seeks to gain promotions there is no substitute for hard work.

4. Build the Right Connections

While it’s good to cultivate good relations with your co-workers the persons you should devote more time to build strategic relationships with are your superiors. In an ideal world promotions and elevations will be based on merit but then things are always far from ideal at the workplace. Office politics will always play a role on who gets promoted or not.

5. Apply for Internal Vacancies

When higher positions become available in your company you will need to apply and not just wait and hope to be called upon. Follow the internal application process and do the interviews diligently. Don’t be complacent and sell yourself to the people that matter.

6. Acquire New Skills

If you are seeking promotions it pays to improve your current ability and skill set. Gaining skills and knowledge that is far beyond what your current job requires sets you up for consideration when the company or organization needs someone to handle some tougher positions

7. Never be Indispensable

There is something ugly about being indispensable in your current position. When your boss thinks the organization needs you, in a particular position, as humans need air it could actually be a bad thing. You get passed by for promotions because everybody feels they can’t afford to let you off from that position. If you are so good in your current work that you fear being stuck there one thing you can do is to groom a successor.

Find someone who can learn to do your job almost, if not as well, as you can. In all try to make sure you are not stuck to a particular job because the organization deems you indispensable in that position.

CareerDo You Make This Simple Mistake In Your Job Applications? by pacodas(op): 10:44am On Sep 12, 2014
Having you been applying for jobs for sometime now with no response or feedback from employers? Have you always wondered what could be wrong? Qualification? Yes you have the complete qualification, you met the requirements, why then have you not been called, even for an interview?

You might be making mistake of not reading instructions before applying.

Most times in your bid to apply for job quickly, you forget simple instruction on how to apply. From experience we noticed that many jobseekers fail to follow simple instructions on steps to apply for job. For example, a position might require you apply using job reference number as subject line of application, or attach you CV in Microsoft Word format only. Failing simple instructions like this could be costing a lot.

In exam setting, you are always asked to cross your I(s) and dot you T(s). The same applies to your job search. Make sure you crosscheck everything before submitting your application.

PoliticsPresident Jonathan Seeks $1bn Loan To Fight Boko Haram by pacodas(op): 3:36pm On Jul 17, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday forwarded a letter to the National Assembly, asking the lawmakers to urgently approve a $1bn external loan for the Federal Government to confront the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The letter dated July 15, 2014, was read on the floor of the Senate and that of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, by the Senate President David Mark and Speaker Aminu Tambuwal respectively.

In the letter, Jonathan explained that the external loan was urgently needed to upgrade the equipment, training and logistics of the Armed Forces and security services in order to enable them to confront the insurgents more forcefully.

The letter titled, “Tackling Ongoing Security Challenges: Need for Urgent Action”, read in part, “You are no doubt cognisant of the ongoing and serious security challenges which the nation is facing , as typified by the Boko Haram terrorist threat. This is an issue that we have discussed at various times.

“I would like to bring to your attention the urgent need to upgrade the equipment, training and logistics of our Armed Forces and Security Services to enable them more forcefully to confront this serious threat.

“For this reason, I seek the concurrence of the National Assembly for external borrowing of not more than $1bn, including government to government arrangements for this upgrade.”

The National Assembly had in the N4.6tn 2014 Budget provisions, appropriated N968.127bn for Defence on account of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The request may be considered today (Thursday) on account of its urgency because both chambers of the National Assembly may embark on their annual long recess today till the end of September 2014.

Also, speaking at the inauguration of the Theophilus Danjuma-led Victims Support Fund Committee, the President said he promised Nigerians that the government would be victorious in the war against insurgency.

“We owe Nigerians nothing but victory over terror. The life of every Nigerian is precious and we will continue to work round the clock to put an end to this insurgency,” Jonathan said.

The President said the country was confronted with individuals whose minds had been so twisted and tutored to believe they were doing God a service by killing and maiming.

He said the inauguration of the support fund was to kick-start the process of providing succour to the people who had been directly affected one way or the other by acts of terrorism in the country.

The President said, “The year 2009 appears to be a tragic turning point. Boko Haram, an assemblage of heartless individuals, took it upon itself to bring evil upon our country. They have, in their mission, turned women to widows and reduced children to orphans.

“They have killed and maimed and struck fear into law-abiding citizens. They have destroyed villages, attacked property and terminated people’s livelihoods without a care in the world. They have engaged our security agencies in a meaningless warfare that has wasted unimaginable human and material resources.

“The reality today is that we are confronted with individuals whose minds have been so twisted and tutored to believe they are doing God a service.”

The President said those who have been victims of terror needed comfort and succour.

He said, “We cannot replace the life of a child that has been snuffed out. We cannot replace the lives of men and women who have been killed. We cannot return broken limbs to their original state. We cannot take away the trauma that people have been put through.

“Their memories are scared, some for the rest of their lives, over what they knew nothing about. The best we can do in this circumstance is to offer them a shoulder to lean on and to stretch out our hands of fellowship to them and tell them we feel their pains and share in their sorrow.

“The Victim Support Fund Committee is part of our ongoing efforts to provide a comprehensive solution to the menace. This Government is determined to resolve this crisis.”

Also at the occasion, the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), said Danjuma was not the first senior Nigerian that would challenge the government on the insurgency, saying some former Heads of State had told the President the same thing.

Dasuki said the government was ready to draw the battle line.

“I assure Nigerians that we will win the war. But there are some very hard choices that would have to be made. We have so far been more concerned about the lives of a few versus the condition of a few million. The decision has to be made soon,” he said.

SportsKeshi Demands 10million A Month Contract by pacodas(op):
Stephen Keshi has reportedly demanded a significant salary hike to sign a new contract to remain as Nigeria coach.
According to africanfootball.com on Tuesday, Keshi, who announced last week that his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation had expired after the Super Eagles crashed out of the World Cup following their 2-0 defeat by France, told President Goodluck Jonathan that he will sign a new deal if the NFF agrees to pay him N10m a month. The former Nigeria captain received N5m a month in his initial contract.
Africanfootball.com reported that Keshi made the demand when he met with Jonathan at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on arrival from the World Cup in Brazil.
He was also said to have demanded that his new salary be paid upfront to avoid the delays he suffered in the previous deal, as well as the recall of his former assistant Sylvanus Okpalla.
A top official at the Presidential Villa told africanfootball.com, “He (Keshi) demanded for N10m a month, which he wants to be paid upfront to check any delays.

“He also wanted what he called a free hand as regards his team selection and preparations, saying he no longer wishes to deal with the technical committee. He also wanted Okpalla back to his backroom staff.
“The President has assured him that his demands will be considered.”
Meanwhile, Keshi pocketed a total of $300,000 when he led Nigeria to the last 16 of the World Cup, africanfootball.com has learned.
He reportedly got $260,000 as appearance fee for the World Cup .

Dazzlee: I used to think it was a hoax until I heard to 'knocks' myself. I attended a boarding secondary school but I only heard it once... grin

I don't think I can forget what happened that fateful night. I was trying to score a song that I was going to sing for the seniors prom night. Was lying on my bunkie's bed (she had gone home) and had my ears plugged with headphones. It was like around 10 - 11pm, all my roommates had crashed. Was still trying to get the lyrics of the song when I realized he battery of the mp4 I was using to listen to the song was low, so I decided to reduce the volume to save energy. Then I heard the door of the room open gently, someone come in and then the 'knocks'. At first, I thought it was someone who came to steal and I blurted 'welldone oo' and turned to see the person. Lo and behold, there was no one, just me and my sleeping roomies in the dark room. Then I removed the headphones, 'who's there?' I asked, but no one answered. 'Seriously, it's not funny. It's too late for this kind of joke.', still, no one answered. Then, I heard the 'knocks' again, but this time it was coming towards me. 'Blood of Jesus' I screamed. Before I knew it, I had jumped down from the bed and ran out of the room. You need to have seen the look on my face.....I was terified.

I couldn't go back to the room that night. I just went to my friend's room and slipped into her bed. grin
Quite Interesting, what of your room mates that were sleeping in the room. Nothing happened to them?

thegoodjoehunt: I guess, you did not watch Azeez when Coach Keshi gave him a chance.
He was poor I agree, but Onazi was also poor in the first match.

Sure I guess lack of matches affected their form. But they but didn't show enough zeal and character. But the coach is responsible for who is invited.
