feasy1:Thank you very much feasy1. I have gone through a lot of responses and I'm quite happy that we have spotted the loopholes in our educational system. It is now high time future employers desist from this craze about qualifications and start recruiting based on strengths, capabilities and technical know how a candidate will bring into an organization or establishment. I have already started in my own little way. |

It really baffles me when I go through the CV's of job applicants here at home since I came back from the UK. I have noticed that the average age of most applicants without any job experience is 27-30 (ie fresh graduates). Within that age bracket in the UK, one should have had at least 6-7 years job experience because at 16 you are legally free to leave school and start work and if you decide to acquire a university degree you must have completed it before you are 21. I had a manager back then who joined the company when he was 17 and acquired his university degree on ''2 days release per week''. He became a manager at 33. Having spent 13years with the company, he fully understands the job role. I do not believe that one can acquire all the skills you need in a job by spending so much time in school because when you leave school as a fresh graduate you'll still need on the job training to function effectively in your chosen role. I understand that our educational system does not help matters at all (ie incessant industrial actions and NYSC thing too which has lost it's purpose). What should be done to correct this abnormally in the future? 1 Like 1 Share |

leighcon:I agree it is very tight but it is not every month that u give donations and gifts, u see |

leighcon: @Leighcon: let me give u a little formular which may be of help to you. In terms of transport to work, if u have a colleague who lives in the same area as u do, u could do car sharing if (he/she also has a car) alternating between the 4 weeks of the month, so u get 2 use your car 2wice in a month. If this is not the case, u may consider not using ur car the whole month alternating btw public transport and driving to work. This will indeed save u some stuff, Lunch at work @10k?? (u can get your wify or girlfriend to pack lunch for you, I mean home made lunch, it's more healthy for you and will save you a lot), 12k for fuelling generator?? (u shouldnt be running generator everyday, 5k should be okay to run gen for 2-3 hrs on days when you absolutely have to. Somebody mentioned tithe, I personally dont believe in it but make sure u give offerings when you go to church. keep aside 10k for recharge cards and miscellaneous expenses, I hope these little tips help, |

@Pa-Ken Do you stay in Lagos? Do you own a car? (And at what rate does it visit clinic) What are the regular utility bills you pay? And you are not a starter I think so you probably have assets (Home appliances) at least the necessary ones - Confirm this. We really need to learn from your formula

@leighcon: No I dont live in Lagos, I live in PortHarcourt Yes I own a small car but I use it only weekends as we have a staff bus. It hardly visits the mechanic except for some routine servicing. I can afford a big car but it's not a priority for now. I pay rent, electricity (though a self-con) Yes of course, I have home appliances which I acquired when I newly started working. It's not difficult, you can do it. You just need to cut down on some ''unnecessary expenses'' |

When I came across this topic it was like I was being referred to by the poster. I got this job in June 2008 which pays nearly N200k after tax and by the end of 2009 I had barely nothing to show as savings after 1 and half yrs, this was because I spent those times attending to too many family/friends problems sending out N5k, N10k, N20k without keeping track, those called for and those totally uncalled for (just to be nice), sending money to girlfriends, buying many irrelevant stuff, taking flights locally, clubbing etc. At the end of last year, I had 2 reflect on my spendings. I made a new year resolution in January 2010 to cut down on so many things including my own life style. It was difficult at first and especially as I layed off all girlfriends but one, lol. I started saving more than 50% of my earnings and I cant believe I have saved nearly N600k after all living expenses and the year is just into it's 5th month. If I continue like this I'll save N1.2-1.5 million by the end of the year and you still have your pension set aside from your salary. People, let's keep saving for the future and in the long run you'll be happy as it will help you plan when you settle down finally into married life, right now I've got all my necessary expenditure into excel sheet to keep track. You may make enemies (people calling you ijebu and sort) but in the long run it's about you.(dont get me wrong- I'm still committed to my immediate family needs) 1 Like |

I have been reading these comments so far and you guys are not far from the truth. However, I must point out something you guys are failing to acknowledge here. Some multinational organizations do not put up this age barrier in their job adverts. They are looking for highly skilled individuals as they do not want to go through the experience required in training green horns fresh from the university, even if they do, they have to put them on a low wage scheme to match their individual skill sets. Again, no matter what you study in the university, when you get employed, you still need to go through the basic training required of you to perform your job efficiently. I for one is an example, I studied for a degree in Pharmacy and now work for a pharmaceutical giant but had to go through series of on the job training 80% of what I never did in my 5 yrs of University (eg IT applications, as everything is done electronically) and 1 yr of postgraduate degree. My point is that if you have the required skill set which an organization requires urgently, they'll still hire you even if you are 50yrs old. The underlying truth is that in Nigeria there are too many people gunning for the same job with virtually no much difference in skill set, that is one of the reasons employers put up this age barrier to selectively eliminate some applicants. One of my friends got hired for a job in Nigeria at 37yrs cos of his vast experience and skill set. So guys, whatever field of endeavour you find yourself, try to acquire and develop a lot of skills, you wouldnt know where you'll need it later in life. Dont get me wrong, I do not support this age barrier thing in job adverts because they are illegal. Recruitment and hence salary should be based on qualification, experience and skill sets. period |

Na Biafra I dey now becos that nation called Nigeria go soon scatter, Infact Northerners don reach their waterloo |
![]() |
Fellow nairalanders, I hv reflected on a lot of issues bordering on this entity called Nigeria from independence till date and have come 2 discover that Nigeria's main problem is the North; because they have seized power for so long, it baffles me how irrational and selfish they are. come 2 think of it, what and how does d North contribute to the economy of Nigeria (aside groundnut, tomatoes n cattles) yet the reap d chunk of the national treasury, hv better roads than any other part of the country + hv a larger allocation when it comes 2 ''federal character''. they r no longer concentrating on harnessing agriculture which they r blessed with 2 d good of the country, rather their eyes and efforts are now focussed on draining the resources of the south becos of selfish interest. In summary, the North is a parasite to Nigeria; had Biafra succeded, Nigeria will be no better than Niger republic--- this thread really annoys me. |
