Match Preview Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea meet at Loftus Road on Sunday in a west London derby of great significance at both ends of the Barclays Premier League. Chelsea head into the weekend with a seven-point lead over Arsenal at the summit, as well as a match in hand over the chasing pack. Rangers are two points adrift of safety having played at least a match more than most of the sides around them - Aston Villa the exception following a 3-3 draw between the sides on Tuesday. "[This is] obviously a very important match for both teams," said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. "We know that, we know they want to win. Nobody is expecting an easy match. "We have to win every game, we have to win the next game and we don't think about the points we have or the match we have in hand, we just think about the next match. "I know QPR have played one match more than the teams they are competing with and everyone knows they need points in these remaining six matches they have, so we know it's a difficult game." Asked whether he was expecting to be greeted by a hostile atmosphere at Loftus Road, Mourinho added: "It's what people tell me. I've never played there, so I don't know, but that's what people tell me. "The people in the stands can play a role, but they cannot score goals." QPR boss Chris Ramsey believes Sunday's encounter is a bigger fixture for his side than it is for Chelsea, whose healthy cushion at the top of the table is in stark contrast to their London rivals' plight. "That's a fair assessment," he remarked. "They can afford to have a blip and still win the league. We really do need to pick up every point that we can. "It'll be a very, very tough game. Hopefully an enjoyable game for the fans, but not too enjoyable for the neutral because I hope that we can do well and collect all the points. "But we know that any team playing Chelsea - especially in the form that they're in and in the run-in to the championship - it's going to be a very difficult game and the players are up for it." Chelsea striker Diego Costa is expected to miss four matches after lasting just 11 minutes as a second-half substitute in last weekend's 2-1 victory over Stoke City before pulling up with yet another hamstring injury. Cesc Fabregas will wear a mask after breaking his nose and, along with Nemanja Matic, is one booking away from a two-match ban, with Manchester United and Arsenal next up. Eduardo Vargas (knee), Rio Ferdinand (knock), Leroy Fer (knee) and Richard Dunne (fitness) are among QPR's considerable list of absentees. QPR (from): Green, McCarthy, Murphy, Caulker, Hill, Isla, Onuoha, Traore, Yun, Barton, Henry, Hoilett, Kranjcar, Phillips, Sandro, Wright-Phillips, Austin, Taarabt, Zamora. Chelsea (from): Blackman, Cech, Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Filipe, Ivanovic, Terry, Zouma, Cuadrado, Fabregas, Hazard, Loftus-Cheek, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Willian, Drogba, Remy. http://m.premierleague.com/content/mobile/en-gb/matches/2014-2015/epl.summary.html/qpr-vs-chelsea |
Chelsea visit Arsenal on Sunday knowing that victory will take them one big step closer to a fourth Barclays Premier League title. Victory for the leaders at Emirates Stadium followed by three more points at Leicester City on Wednesday would secure them secure the trophy with four matches to spare. Jose Mourinho has also a chance to extend his unbeaten record against Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, the Portuguese enjoying dominance in this fixture with an undefeated streak stretching back 12 matches across various competitions. The relationship between the two managers has been fractious in the past, but Mourinho is focused purely on the match ahead and not the history between the two men or clubs. "For me he is not my rival, I don't feel that,” Mourinho said. “I just feel he's the manager of a big club in the same city where I work and live. "We're big clubs with the same objectives and because of that there will always come a little bit of rivalry but for me it's no different to when I was at Inter with the Milan managers or in Real [Madrid] with the Atletico managers. "I'm not proud [of his record over Wenger], for me an achievement is to win [on Sunday], not the other 12 matches that we played before against Arsenal, I don't look to this. "Every match is a match, no relation to the previous or the next one, what they [the players] care about is the way we work all week and the way we prepare ourselves for the game." Mourinho confirmed that Didier Drogba is fit after an ankle problem, although Diego Costa (hamstring) and Loic Remy (calf) remain doubts, with Under-21 star Dominic Solanke in line for a Barclays Premier League debut. Cesc Fabregas is set to make his first return to Emirates Stadium since departing for Barcelona in 2011. Wenger has called on Arsenal fans to respect the Spain midfielder who was captain at Arsenal. If Wenger is to earn his first win over Mourinho, Sunday might represent his best opportunity for some time, with Arsenal coming into the match on the back of eight consecutive league victories. Arsenal are 10 points behind Chelsea, but Wenger remains confident his side can close that gap. "When you are fighting for the championship - and I know that well - when you are on a good run, sometimes you take points that in another season if you were two or three places behind, you would not take," he said. "The focus and belief is there and is a bit stronger that we can take these points. “The difference between the teams is not only measured by the difference in points. "But nobody has given Chelsea the points. They had to fight for it and they made it." Wenger described defender Per Mertesacker as "50-50" for this game with an ankle problem, with Gabriel Paulista set to deputise, while Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain (hamstring) and Mikel Arteta's lack of match fitness means they remain absent. Arsenal (from): Ospina, Szczesny, Bellerin, Chambers, Debuchy, Gabriel, Gibbs, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal, Cazorla, Coquelin, Diaby, Flamini, Gnabry, Ozil, Ramsey, Rosicky, Wilshere, Giroud, Sanchez, Walcott, Welbeck. Chelsea (from): Blackman, Cech, Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Filipe, Ivanovic, Terry, Zouma, Cuadrado, Fabregas, Hazard, Loftus-Cheek, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Willian, Costa, Drogba, Remy, Solanke. http://m.premierleague.com/en-gb/matches/2014-2015/epl.summary.html/arsenal-vs-chelsea |
Diego Costa is in line to feature for Chelsea against Stoke City on Saturday after recovering from a hamstring injury. The Spain striker, who is the joint-leading goalscorer in the Barclays Premier League with 19 goals, sustained the injury during his side's 3-2 victory over Hull City two weeks ago and withdrew from international duty as a result, but the 26-year-old returned to training this week and is expected to be available for selection against the Potters for Saturday's early evening kick-off at Stamford Bridge. "Diego trained yesterday and today with the group and he is not injured," Mourinho said in his pre-match press conference on Friday. "I don't know if I start with him or not because after a muscular injury and then just two days with the group, I need to analyse the situation with him and make a decision. "His injury was the same as before, hamstring, and he dedicated himself to that with no days off for him or the medical department, working morning and afternoon. "We did all the tests and scans to confirm the situation two days ago and at the moment the muscle is fine, but football is more than that, you need confidence, you need to believe you are free to express yourself at the maximum intensity and that is our doubt at the moment. Let's see in the next 24 hours." Chelsea are sitting pretty at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a six-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City and a match in hand over the chasing pack, which they play against struggling Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday. They have not lost in the Barclays Premier League since a 5-3 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on New Year's Day and are the only team in the four divisions who are unbeaten at home in the league this season. And now Mourinho describes the task head as one of "pure mathematics". "It is a good situation for us and one all the other clubs would like to be in, but we need to do that and we haven't yet," he said. "But it's pure mathematics: we need to win six matches and draw one." Midfielder John Obi Mikel (knee) will also be assessed after a month on the sidelines but the visit of Stoke is likely to come too soon for him. Mark Hughes, meanwhile, is eager to celebrate his new contract by ending Stoke's long wait for a win at Stamford Bridge. The Potters have lost their last eight matches at Chelsea and January 2009 was the last time they scored at Hughes' former side. The Staffordshire club have failed to hit the back of the net in seven visits since then and not since a 1-0 League Cup success back in 1995 have they secured an away win over Chelsea. Stoke's winless streak at Chelsea in league matches goes back to 1984 and Hughes, who last week agreed a three-year extension to his current deal, knows they are overdue a victory over the club where he spent three years in his playing days. "Our record there hasn't been great, but that is the case for most teams," he said. "The last time the club got a positive outcome down there was in 1984, and I think my first-team coach [Eddie Niedzwiecki] was in goal that day. I'm not sure what that says about him to be honest. "We have acquitted ourselves well in big games on the road this season, and we want to go down to London and put in another good performance. It will be incredibly difficult because they have world-class players and they have an outstanding man in charge. "I don't think they have been playing as well as they were at the start of the season, but they are still picking up positive results. They don't have Europe to contend with now and maybe that will help them in their bid to lift the title." Back-to-back defeats against West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before the international break have left Stoke 10th. On-loan Stoke winger Victor Moses is ineligible to face his parent club, but Hughes expects Jonathan Walters (knock) and Marc Muniesa (hamstring) to be fit. Chelsea (from): Blackman, Cech, Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Christensen, Filipe, Ivanovic, Terry, Zouma, Cuadrado, Fabregas, Hazard, Loftus-Cheek, Matic, Mikel, Oscar, Ramires, Willian, Costa, Drogba, Remy. Stoke City (from): Begovic, Butland, Sorensen, Bardsley, Cameron, Muniesa, Pieters, Shawcross, Teixeira, Wilkinson, Wilson, Wollscheid, Adam, Ireland, N'Zonzi, Palacios, Sidwell, Whelan, Arnautovic, Crouch, Diouf, Walters. Match Appointments Referee: Jonathan Moss Assistants: D England, E Smart Fourth Official: M Jones Match Facts Stoke City have not scored in six of the last seven Barclays Premier League matches against Chelsea. Chelsea have won 10 and lost one of their 13 BPL meetings with Stoke City. The Blues have conceded eight goals in their last 22 league matches at Stamford Bridge, keeping 16 clean sheets in that run. Peter Crouch has scored seven top-flight goals this season, but they have won Stoke City nine points. Conversely, Diego Costa's 19 league goals have earned Chelsea eight points. http://m.premierleague.com/en-gb/matches/2014-2015/epl.summary.html/chelsea-vs-stoke |
