Two students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko have been arraigned before Justice Theophine Oguji of the State High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four count charge bordering on Conspiracy and Stealing.

The suspects, identified as Aneke Collins Nnamdi and Sifon Samuel Israel were charged on Thursday, 23rd February, 2017.

The students got more than they bargained for when First City Momument Bank (FCMB) petitioned the EFCC that they received report from one of their customers, Girls Secondary School, Awka, over an unauthorized web transfer of over N10 million on their account with the bank.

Count one of the charge reads: “that you Aneke Collins Nnamdi and Sifon Samuel Israel sometimes in the month of October 2016 at Awka in Anambra state within the Jurisdiction of this honourable court did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: Stealing of money property of Girls Secondary School Akwa and thereby committed and offence of Conspiracy contrary to Section 353 of the Criminal Code CAP 36 Vol II Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.

In view of their plea, the prosecution counsel, M. T. Iko asked the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial and urged the court to remand the defendants in prison custody.

However, the defense counsel, J. N. Okongwu asked for a short date to file his bail application.

The case was adjourned to 22 March and 4, 9 May, 2017 for trial. The defendants are to be remanded in prison custody pending the determination of their bail.

Nairaland GeneralTop 5 Most Poisonous & Dangerous Snakes On Earth by Parkac(op): 11:11am On Jan 11, 2017
This list of top most poisonous and dangerous snakes is an overview of the snakes that pose a significant health risk to humans, through snakebites or other physical trauma. The varieties of snake that most often cause serious snakebites depends on the region of the world.

Here is the list of most poisonous and dangerous snakes in the universe;

1. Belcher’s Sea Snake:
The Belcher’s sea snake are quite common. They are recognizable from their stripes. Usually these snakes have no interest in confrontation, but if one feels threatened, it may bite you. Three out of four times this will be no big deal, since only about one quarter of Belcher’s Sea Snakes carry venom. Those that do though have the highest concentration of venom in existence. Just a few milligrams has the capacity to kill thousands of human beings, making this the most poisonous snake in the world. Nonetheless, most Belcher’s Sea Snakes are quite harmless thanks to a docile personality and a lack of venom.

2. Rattlesnake:
When most people think of poisonous snakes, the rattlesnake springs to mind pretty quickly. These snakes are found throughout the Americas and are actually a type of viper. Their name comes of course from the rattle which is found at the end of the tail and which creates a distinctive noise. Eastern Diamondbacks are the most poisonous of all rattlesnakes. Thankfully, only about 4% of bites result in fatalities with prompt treatment, but untreated, any rattlesnake bite has the potential to kill. The venom can also cause permanent damage to organs and may even lead to the loss of a limb.

3. Death Adder:
You know that famous legend about Cleopatra using a snake to kill herself? The type of snake she supposedly used was a death adder. You can find these snakes throughout Australia, New Guinea, and other regions. A bite can result in paralysis, respiratory arrest, and death inside of only six hours. With
fast treatment, a patient is unlikely to die, but without treatment, about 50% of bites are lethal.

4. Inland Taipan:
While it’s difficult to be as impressed by the Inland Taipan after learning about the concentration of venom in a Belcher’s Sea Snake bite, it’d be foolish to discount the Taipan just because its bite can only kill as many as 100 people! Taipans usually avoid human contact, however, and you are unlikely to ever encounter one.

5. Eastern Brown Snake:
This type of snake is among the few which are actually aggressive. It is commonly found in Australia, and may be found in populated areas like cities, not just remote locations. If it perceives someone as a threat, it will actually chase that person out of its territory. If the snake is not confident of its safety, it may decide to bite. If it does so, it may bite many times during a single attack. Less than half contain venom, but those that do can cause paralysis or death.
Because of its proximity to population centers and its aggression, you could argue the Eastern Brown Snake is the most dangerous snake in the world.

Foreign AffairsRead Full Transcript President Obama’s Farewell Speech by Parkac(op): 10:16am On Jan 11, 2017
United States President, Barack Obama gave his farewell speech in Chicago on Tuesday, January 11.

See full transcript;

It’s good to be home. My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks. But tonight it’s my turn to say thanks. Whether we’ve seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people — in living rooms and schools; at farms and on factory floors; at diners and on distant outposts — are what have kept me honest, kept me inspired, and kept me going. Every day, I learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man.
I first came to Chicago when I was in my early twenties, still trying to figure out who I was; still searching for a purpose to my life. It was in neighborhoods not far from here where I began working with church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills. It was on these streets where I witnessed the power of faith, and the quiet dignity of working people in the face of struggle and loss. This is where I learned that change only happens when ordinary people get involved, get engaged, and come together to demand it.
After eight years as your President, I still believe that. And it’s not just my belief. It’s the beating heart of our American idea — our bold experiment in self-government.

It’s the conviction that we are all created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It’s the insistence that these rights, while self-evident, have never been self-executing; that We, the People, through the instrument of our democracy, can form a more perfect union.
This is the great gift our Founders gave us. The freedom to chase our individual dreams through our sweat, toil, and imagination — and the imperative to strive together as well, to achieve a greater good.
For 240 years, our nation’s call to citizenship has given work and purpose to each new generation. It’s what led patriots to choose republic over tyranny, pioneers to trek west, slaves to brave that makeshift railroad to freedom. It’s what pulled immigrants and refugees across oceans and the Rio Grande, pushed women to reach for the ballot, powered workers to organize. It’s why GIs gave their lives at Omaha Beach and Iwo Jima; Iraq and Afghanistan — and why men and women from Selma to Stonewall were prepared to give theirs as well.
So that’s what we mean when we say America is exceptional. Not that our nation has been flawless from the start, but that we have shown the capacity to change, and make life better for those who follow.
Yes, our progress has been uneven. The work of democracy has always been hard, contentious and sometimes bloody. For every two steps forward, it often feels we take one step back. But the long sweep of America has been defined by forward motion, a constant widening of our founding creed to embrace all, and not just some.
If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry, and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history…if I had told you that we would open up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot, and take out the mastermind of 9/11…if I had told you that we would win marriage equality, and secure the right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens — you might have said our sights were set a little too high.
But that’s what we did. That’s what you did. You were the change. You answered people’s hopes, and because of you, by almost every measure, America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started.
In ten days, the world will witness a hallmark of our democracy: the peaceful transfer of power from one freely-elected president to the next. I committed to President-Elect Trump that my administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as President Bush did for me. Because it’s up to all of us to make sure our government can help us meet the many challenges we still face.
We have what we need to do so. After all, we remain the wealthiest, most powerful, and most respected nation on Earth. Our youth and drive, our diversity and openness, our boundless capacity for risk and reinvention mean that the future should be ours.
But that potential will be realized only if our democracy works. Only if our politics reflects the decency of the our people. Only if all of us, regardless of our party affiliation or particular interest, help restore the sense of common purpose that we so badly need right now.
That’s what I want to focus on tonight — the state of our democracy.
Understand, democracy does not require uniformity. Our founders quarreled and compromised, and expected us to do the same. But they knew that democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity — the idea that for all our outward differences, we are all in this together; that we rise or fall as one.
There have been moments throughout our history that threatened to rupture that solidarity. The beginning of this century has been one of those times. A shrinking world, growing inequality; demographic change and the specter of terrorism — these forces haven’t just tested our security and prosperity, but our democracy as well. And how we meet these challenges to our democracy will determine our ability to educate our kids, and create good jobs, and protect our homeland.
In other words, it will determine our future.
Our democracy won’t work without a sense that everyone has economic opportunity. Today, the economy is growing again; wages, incomes, home values, and retirement accounts are... Read more: http://360reporters.com/2017/01/obamas-farewell-speech-united-states-president-full-transcript/
EducationFulafia Sacks Four Staff Members, Demotes One by Parkac(op): 9:30am On Jan 09, 2017
Federal University Lafia Management Sanctions Erring Staff Members.

The Governing Council of Federal University Lafia (FULafia) has recently approved the termination of appointment of some members of staff and demotion of one other.

According to a statement issued by the FULafia Information and Public Relations Unit, the council gave the approval when its members met to consider the report of the Staff Disciplinary Committee, which was established to look into cases of illegal employment of staff in the University.

The dismissed members of staff included Taiwo Kehinde, Clement Usoro Jackson, Usman Anas and Ahmed Muhammed Abdulazeez, while Apeshi Salihu Abubakar was demoted from the rank of Administrative Assistant to Executive Officer (Administration).

Abubakar was demoted for his role in facilitating illegal employment while the dismissed workers were found guilty of extortion of money to offer employment in the University.

It would be recalled that the media, this year, reported stories of alleged maladministration and corruption in the process of employment in FULafia under the tenure of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ekanem Braide.

The media claimed that in some cases, money was collected from some people in order to offer them employment.

CrimeTwo Nigerians Arrested By Indian Police For Fraud by Parkac(op): 1:50pm On Oct 03, 2016
Two Nigerians living in India were arrested at the weekend for cheating several people after befriending them on social networking sites.

The duo — Chukwuma Collins, 35, and Nicodemus Obinna, 27 — used to befriend people on Facebook and then ask for money to send “necessary items” to their family members in UK, according to a report by The Times of India

Police said that the men used to fabricate stories about the poor conditions of their family members living in western countries and ask the victims to help them with money. After receiving the money they broke all contact with the victims.

Goa Police had received a complaint from a woman, Bridget Fernandes Rai, who claimed to have been cheated of around Rs 8 lakh, about $12,000, by the duo. She said that she had befriended Collins on Facebook and after a few days of chatting he started calling her.

Rai told the police that Collins started referring to her as his sister and asked for Rs 8 lakh to transfer some money and jewellery through a courier to his relatives.

He claimed that the courier was stuck in legal processes at the customs department in Goa and he needed to get it delivered quickly as his wife had expired. Rai agreed to transfer the money to his account. As soon as the money was transferred, Collins “disappeared”, Rai alleged.

"A team from Goa Police approached us in Delhi after a technical surveillance pointed to role of some people operating from here. A joint team was formed to track the accused. The duo was arrested from Mahavir Enclave in south Delhi," said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner, crime.

Collins and Obinna have confessed to their crime and disclosed that they had cheated several others in a similar way. Three laptops, data cards, 36 SIM cards and 26 mobile phones were recovered from them, said The Times.

During interrogation, the duo claimed that they had arrived in India five years ago for business and then started cheating people using different techniques.

The accused were produced in a Dwarka court and taken on a transit remand by Goa Police.

EducationUmahi Sacks Workers In Ebonyi In EBSU & College Of Education, Ikwo by Parkac(op): 2:08am On Aug 29, 2016
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Nweze Umahi, has ordered the immediate sack of some non-academic staff of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki and the College of Education, Ikwo.

Umahi, who gave the order on Saturday while receiving the report of a committee to review the activities in the institutions, said that it is not economically viable for the institutions to recruit adjunct staff in the non-academic cadre, as the employees will be redundant in their duties.

"It does not make ‘economic sense’ for the institutions to employ 400 cleaners as one wonders the scope and nature of work they will be doing.

"We know that the managements postulated ‘professional sense’ in employing such workers but with the prevailing economic situation in the country, we should effectively merge it with ‘economic sense," he said.

The governor also ordered that promotion of staff in both institutions be suspended until the visitation panel concluded its duties.
He also directed the state’s fiscal responsibility commission to investigate activities in both institutions.

"When we conclude all reviews and investigations, I am optimistic that we can reduce their tuition fees as obtained in other states of the South East geo political zone.

It's not the one near prison. Just enter a bus going towards Ekwulobia from Amawbia and tell the driver where you are stopping or better still take a bike from Amawbia junction to the place. Good luck.
