PoliticsPeter Obi's Aide Backs Up Vp's Debate Stats With Evidence by Parkac(op):
ON PETER OBI’s USE OF ECONOMIC DATA AT THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: BETWEEN FACTS AND FICTION
By Valentine Obienyem.

Economic data is not fixed, such data is based on specific date or period. Though the figures change every second, periodic figures are used for range of time until the data provider publishes updated figures. This explains why Nigeria’s unemployment rate is still quoted at 18.8% despite the fact that the data is more than one year old. Provided no current figure is available, the latest figure remains the most reliable.
Having researched the figures quoted by Mr. Peter Obi at the Vice Presidential debate, I wish to present to you the comprehensive source of data that Mr. Obi quoted during the debate. I can understand why some people, desirous of massaging the pains of the “knock-out blow” he gave to the incumbent Vice President during the debate have gathered together to attack him like antibodies gathering to attack an infection. What are they doing? They are questioning the accuracy of the data he used during the debate because he tossed them up and set them on their feet now and then like a jolly juggler tossing objects into the air with admirable candour. Ridiculously, some of them said that “after all the man is not a computer!”
The fact is that one can argue about Obi’s parsimony; whether as a trader he would leave his shop chasing criminal or not; but one cannot argue about his affinity with facts and figures which is as strong as the attraction between an antigen and an antibody.
I also see people faulting his comparison of Nigeria with countries like China, Turkey, Mexico and South Africa. He uses those countries because in the eighties, Nigeria was at par with them in most economic indicators. In choosing them, typical of his nature, he was just trying to act like a gadfly, provoking Nigerians to seek answers to the reasons those countries left us behind.
For those in love with the Cross checking of facts, I will present the sources of the date Obi used during the debate. Let me forewarn readers, as I said earlier, that economic data do not obey the laws of exactitude.
Here we go!.
1. Obi said Nigeria used over 50% of her revenue to service debt
Facts: According to DMO’s 2017 reports on Nigeria’s debt stock and total debt service, Total Debt Service as %age of FGN Retained Revenue was 58.56% in 2017.
2. Obi said the country’s total debt stock was N22.7 trillion, about USD80 billion.
Facts: According to DMO’s June 2018 report on Nigeria’s debt stock, Nigeria’s total debt stock was N22.38 trillion or USD73.21 billion using an official exchange rate of N305.70/USD. When we add the USD2.8 billion Eurobond issued in November 2016, the total debt stock comes to USD76.01 billion.
3. Obi said that Mexico’s GDP was over USD1 trillion and its GDP per capita was over USD8,000.
Facts: According to the world bank (source: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.KD?locations=MX&view=chart), Mexico’s 2017 GDP (constant 2010) was USD1.28 trillion while its GDP per capita (constant 2010) was USD9,946.16
4. Obi said that South Africa’s stock market capitalization was USD900 billion.
Facts: According to Stock Market Clock (https://www.stockmarketclock.com/exchanges/jse), in March 2018, South Africa’s market capitalization was USD891.74 billion.
5. Obi said that Nigerian bank loans made up 15% of GDP.
Facts: According to world bank (source: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/FD.AST.PRVT.GD.ZS?locations=NG&view=chart), Nigeria’s domestic credit to private sector by banks as a percentage of GDP was 14.15%.
6. Obi said that Nigeria had the highest number of Poor at 87 million – growing by 6 persons per minute
Facts: According to a Brookings Institute publication, “The start of a new poverty narrative” published by Homi Kharas, Kristofer Hamel, and Martin Hofer on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 (source: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/future-development/2018/06/19/the-start-of-a-new-poverty-narrative/),

EducationNo JAMB Result Yet Or UTME Results Withheld – Solutions by Parkac(op): 5:01pm On Apr 05, 2018
Why is jamb saying no result yet? That was a question I got this morning from a candidate who was unable to access his UTME result on the Jamb Result Checking Portal.

What Could Be Done In Situations Like This?

Please, you have to be really patient. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have advised candidates to check their results online. But there are a couple of reasons why you may not have seen your result yet, even after the some days. That doesn’t mean you will never have the result.

Note that the results are uploaded online in batches. So, it’s most likely that yours hasn’t been uploaded at the time you were trying to check, even when your friends have already printed theirs.

Simply check back much later as JAMB is currently working hard towards resolving all the pending issues. You don’t have to be in a rush to avoid making regrettable mistakes. Tell your parents /guardians to be patient with you. Refer them to this post, if that would help.

Also, be wary of whoever is promising to upgrade your result. That is NEVER POSSIBLE!!
Don’t be a victim of their scam! This warning goes out specially to those yet to see their results, those that have seen theirs but scored lowly, those who gets the response “Result Withheld” when they try to check. This is because these set of JAMBites appears to be the most vulnerable to be exploited by the scammers currently on rampage online in different guise. Once again, don’t be a victim!

EducationNUC Dissociates Self From Alleged Nigerian University Ranking by Parkac(op): 12:47pm On Jul 03, 2017
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has dissociated itself from the purported ranking of Nigerian universities making rounds on the Internet.

In a swift statement released by NUC, the commission said that the list did not emanate from the supervisory agency of the nation’s university system.

The statement read, “The attention of the NUC has been drawn to some purported lists, making the rounds on the internet, of the ‘Top 100’ and ‘Top 50’ universities in Nigeria, which were alleged to be the outcome of a non-existing ‘annual university rankings’ by the National University Commission.

“It has to be stated, unequivocally, that the lists did not emanate from the NUC. The Commission therefore totally dissociates itself from them.”

The NUC restated that its mandate includes approval of courses and programmes; determination and maintenance of Minimum Academic Standards; monitoring of universities; accreditation of academic programmes and institutions; as well as provision of guidelines and processing of applications for the establishment of private universities.

The NUC added that the first ranking of Nigerian universities done by the agency in 2002 was based on the performance of the universities’ academic programmes in the 1999 and 2000 accreditation exercises.

The 2004 ranking, it stated, was based on percentage of academic programmes of the university with full accreditation status; compliance with carrying capacity; proportion of the academic staff of the university at professorial level; foreign content in workforce and students; and faculty members with outstanding academic achievements.

It stated that the NUC also looked at research output; student completion rate; Ph.D graduate output for the year; stability of university calendar; and student-to-computer ratio.

The results of the exercise, the NUC added, were duly published and that the same would be done for future exercises.

TV/MoviesRe: Gotv Has Gone Rogue by Parkac(m): 1:01am On Apr 05, 2017
This is a very serious matter and a case of insincerity on the part of Gotv Nigeria. I just visited their Facebook page and saw a lot of complaints from customers, especially since last week.
I actually renewed my decoder for the next 3 months but I am yet to be reconnected despite paying before expiry. All efforts to reach their office via call/sms proved abortive.

If they are having technical issues, the best thing is to let the customers know rather than receiving payments and shutting us out.

EducationJAMB Adopts New Method For Writing 2017 Computer Based UTME by Parkac(op): 10:13am On Mar 30, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new system for the Computer Based (CBT) method of writing the 2017/2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who spoke during the strategic planning retreat on monitoring and supervision of 2017 UTME held in Kaduna, from the general feedback on the adoption of the Computer Based Test mode, the board has noted the challenge of computer low level literacy of some candidates, especially with the phobia for the mouse.

This, he noted, has been responsible partly for the call by some people for reversal to the Paper and Pencil Test mode.

"In order to ensure equity and level playground for all candidates taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the Board has designed a system that will allow candidates use only eight keys without the use of the mouse.

"All the candidates need to do is to press the letters A,B,C,D for responses (answer) to questions and keys: P = Previous question, N = Next question, S = Submit responses when candidate has finished examination and R = Reverse (do not intend to go further to submit again).

"Following the standardisation of the CBT centres in terms of carrying capacity of two hundred and fifty (250), candidates would be distributed evenly to all centres without any discrimination.

"The examination schedule, timetable and Sessions have all been designed, streamlined and syncronised for the examination to start and end on the same day, except otherwise dictated by the number of candidates in a few states with low subscription", he added.

"I also applied for direct entry three times at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

"During this period of waiting, I started professional career at the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) in 2007 and became qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) in 2010," Orefuwa said.

She said that her marriage at the beginning of her final year and the pregnancy condition did not affect her academic performance.
