vivoge:
Pls gurus in the house, Is it advisable to forward a sample business plan to a prospective client? He wants to see my previous work. Need advise.
@Vivoge, there two things I think you should consider in this case:

1) Ask yourself some basic questions

Is this sample business plan you talk about yours? Is it real, as in is it really something you plan to execute in the future? Does it contain any special trade secret that you don't want out? Is this potential client likely to constitute a competition in the near future? What is the worst thing that would happen if you let the public see this business plan? Is winning the contract more beneficial to you than avoiding the worst case scenario that may result from exposing the business plan?

Your answers to the above questions may point you in the right direction.

2) Don't cross the terms of your previous contract

If the businessplan is something you did for another client in the past, you may NOT have rights to use it as a sample project. At least not without a clear permission from the rightful owner - in this case, the person that PAID you to do it.

PRO TIP: The best thing (IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT) is to do a custom business plan along the line of the idea this potential client must have expressed in his brief (if the time would permit it). The good thing about this (even if the potential client does not hire you) is that you can now have something to easily showcase in your portfolio and use as sample in future proposals.

@Victor, Fxbot and d other gurus here, sorry for not showing my appreciation by commenting, I like the mole approach (keeping shut and work)on things like this, just wanted to see results first...

but one question please, "offering WordPress services, is it just installing WordPress, WordFence and some plugins before handling it over to d clients?" or it includes inserting of contents and some more administrative work?

pls guys, more light on this.

thanks
Another way to look at it is to call yourself a Wordpress Administrator or Wordpress Integrator. Both are different scopes.

Administration may include integration but integration may not include administration.

Administration talks about installation and day to day running of (especially) the BASIC technical side of the site. But integration entails EXAPANDING the core functionality of the site by integrating thirdparty plugins into it.

Wordpress services sound quite generic to me. But I do know that some of the most sought after and highest paid freelancers are WorPress Developers. If you want to play in this niche, getting geeky might be the entry ticket.

I'm talking about breathing HTML/CSS day and night. Eating Javascript for breakfast. Downing PHP for lunch. And greedily gulping JQuery and even some Python or Ajax for dinner.

No, you don't need to know all these stuff before you start. They are here just as relevant points to give you some good headsup on what's ahead on the route to becoming an efficient Worpress Developer.

But then, once in a while, you may run into a few blog network owners or operators who might need help setting up some more Worpress driven sites and getting some plugins integrated into them. This is not my niche though, but I doubt you'd find this kind of gigs very often. Reason being that Wordpress is designed to be so user friendly and easy to get set up. Thus, virtually ANYONE and their puppies can easily install and run it successfully with just a little reading on the web.

But few people, I mean very few, would know (or even dare to learn) how to customize a WP site, mess confidently with its source files, and make it look and behave differently from the generic pack. This is where and why WP Developers are so needed rght now.

Please just a little clarification. How do I put two different jobs on my profile? Is it possible? To handle both graphic designs and article writing. Or must it just be one. Thanks for your replies
You can add up to 10 skill-categories to your profile. Of course no one will stop you from adding both graphics design and article writing as parts of your skill sets, but from marketing perspective, doing so would make you look unprofessional to many potential clients.

One of the keys to success as a freelance professional is SPECIALIZATION. This is true even if you are multi-talented. Trying to appear as jack of all threads will make potential clients percieve you as a master of none. The shocking truth is that both graphics design and writing are each too wide that hardly would you see a person who can master either in all of its facets. So your best bet is to FOCUS on the area that's your absolute best and for wich you are freaking passionate.

That said, if you want to go for writing, the first thing you should really consider is whether you are cut out for fiction or non-fiction writing. Very few abnormal folks have excelled in both, but the vast majority of those who try to do the same usually end up as mediocre writers.

Now, even each of both the fiction and non-fiction writing genres still has lots of sub-genres that you'd still need to screen and choose the one to master. For example, in non-fiction, you have business writing, journalism, and biography etc. But that's not all. Each of these three mentioned sub-genres of nonfiction writing still has many sub units. For exampke under business writing, you still have stuffs like white paper, email, copywriting, case study, reviews, brochure, adverts etc. This is also true about journalism in which case you talk about news reporting, investigative writing, feature writing, press release and so on. I've not even mentioned the more technical stuff like academic writing and scientific writing etc. The point is that all these are still under nonfiction writing. We've not said anything about fiction writing, mind you.

Just as writing is broad so also is graphics design - not just about the type of designs but also about the type of graphics design tools you are able to use masterfully.

The rational of my drift is that serious specialization will make you a better freelancer and land you better contracts at the long run.

You can even specialize in serving a particular type of clients too. But that's a story for another day.

JustCare:
hello,
what are the virtual assistance job available in upwork
@JustCare, VA jobs are countless at Upwork. There's no uniform description for it. It all depends on what the potential boss wants. Just like the name, Virtual Asistants are people who asist their employers to complete certain tasks over the Internet. These tasks may include data entry, content creation, social accounts management, clients/customers/partners cordination, emails/calls/contacts management etc etc. The list can go on endlessly depending on who hires you and in what industry/niche he or she is. Just see yourself as a PA or secretary. Some employers will even require you to be online for a specified number of hours within a specified number of days each week. But others may work with you only as the need arises.

Practice is the pathway to mastery. So your best bet is probably to go and signup, get skilled up and start hustling for your next Upwork boss.

I'm a writer. all I've got now is my android phone. . pls what do you suggest I do.

I love writing, but I've never been a freelancer. the 20 pages of this thread has really enlightened me.

shout out to victor101, fxbot, stagger(funny man) and others
@Geofavor I don't know about phone, but with a tab you can do a lot. When I started, I actually borrowed a friend's laptop for months, but never used it much for the contracts I did. Even right now I rarely use my laptop except for few heavy projects. Don't get me wrong, having a laptop is very crucial, but you can start effectively as a writer without it.

PRO TIP: If you don't have a laptop, focus on submitting proposals for FIXED PAY contract options. With that you can work at your own pace without the need for Upwork time tracker wich requires a PC for local installation. The flip side of this is that you won't have hourly rating which helps to enhance your profile stregnth. But does it really matter when you're just starting out? Yes it does, but not much if you get enough fixed contracts fast enough and raise capital to buy a laptop.

PRO TIP: Some clients might even allow you to do hourly jobs at your convinience and log the time manually. In this case the hourly contract is done without the time tracker. This is rare though. May not happen when you're just starting out.

The point is that you can start small and grow big. Yes, I started at a very small level without my own laptop, but right now by God's grace I am one of the very few Nigrian freelancers with a TOP RATED badge on Upwork. Those who work at Upwork would know what it means. So please do not limit yourself. Your life can change pretty soon if you commit to pretty hard work from where you are now.

okay bro,

I have a question here and it goes like this

does anyone have any idea when activities on these sites reach their peak or when it is at its lowest ebb. is it in morning, afternoon, evening or late in the night?
"Upwork has nine million registered freelancers and four million registered clients. Three million jobs are posted annually, worth a total of $1 billion USD, making it the world's largest freelancer marketplace". - Wikipedia.

The fact that millions of people are collaborating on that platform each day makes it very active round the clock. From my experience, there's no such thing as peak or low period on the site. Though as a freelancer, without some insider marketing tricks, you may have slow periods when you're with little or no contracts. This happenes more at the begining though when you have very little profile stregnth. But it can be avoided.

@eddie30

Why would you not want to sign up as a Nigerian?

Unless you are truly not based in the country, I don't think
falsifying your country of residence is a smart idea in any
way. For starters, Upwork is very flexible but they can also
be very strict when it comes to user authenticity.

You don't want to mess with them at all.

A few hundred bucks on a regular note will mean a lot to many of us. Besides, earning forex can do wonders in your psyche once you get a hang of it.

Since 1999 she has been married to Admiral Allison Madueke (retired), one-time Chief of Naval Staff who was at various times governor of Imo and Anambra State.[2] she has a son Chimeze Madueke In September 2011 Alison-Madueke was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Management Sciences by the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.[5]

Federal cabinet positions

Cynthia Madueke is her daughter live in so many countries,Diezani Alison-Madueke has held three significant positions in the Nigerian federal government. She was appointed Transport Minister in July 2007. On 23 December 2008, she was named as Minister of Mines and Steel Development.[6] After Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan became acting President in February 2010, he dissolved the cabinet on 17 March 2010, and swore in a new cabinet on 6 April 2010 with Alison-Madueke as Minister for Petroleum Resources.[7]

Minister of Petroleum Resources

As Minister of Petroleum Resources, Alison-Madueke has pledged to transform Nigeria's oil and gas industry so that all Nigerians benefit.[8]

In April 2010, President Goodluck Jonathan signed the Nigerian Content Act, which aims to increase the percentage of petroleum industry contracts that are awarded to indigenous Nigerian businesses - a reaction to the domination of the sector by foreign operators.[9]

One of the most controversial policies introduced under Alison-Madueke is the government's plan to remove state subsidies on fuel prices. Alison-Madueke has supported the discontinuation of the subsidy on the grounds that it "poses a huge financial burden on the government, disproportionately benefits the wealthy, [and] encourages inefficiency, corruption and diversion of scarce public resources away from investment in critical infrastructure."[10]

Alison-Madueke is the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria, and in October 2010 she became the first woman to head a country delegation at the annual OPEC conference. She was also the first female Minister of Transportation, and the first woman to be appointed to the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria.[11] On the 27th of November, 2014 she got elected as the first female President of OPEC [12]

On working in male-dominated sectors, Alison-Madueke said she warned the young women she mentored while at Shell to "change their mode of thinking."[13]

Controversy

In June 2008 Alison-Madueke was subject to a Senate probe after it emerged that as Transport Minister she had paid 30.9 billion naira ($263 million) to contractors between 26 and 31 December 2007. She is said to be worth over a billion naira .

However, she has never been charged or tried for these allegations and has strongly denied any wrongdoing. Diezani Allison was alleged to have spent billions of dollars inappropriately on private jets whilst many Nigerians suffer. She also alleged to have been having an affair with President Jonathan[14] and responsible for missing $20 billion dollars. She is also widely accused of reckless spending of Govt funds. [15] [16] [17] [18] In September 2008 there was an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Alison-Madueke at her house in Abuja with her son Chimezie Madueke.[19]

In October 2009, the Senate of Nigeria indicted Diezani Alison-Madueke and recommended prosecution for the alleged transfer of 1.2 billion naira into the private account of a toll company without due process and in breach of concession agreement. [20] However, the allegations have never been taken to law, and the Minister maintains her innocence.[21]

In other words, Inbound Marketing is a data driven approach to understanding people and their unique pains or craves deeply, educating them accordingly and helping them find the best solutions to their problems in a most rewarding and delightful manner.
