Kante and Mendy were more instrumental in that UCL win and in the Euros, Donnaruma, Chiellini, Bonucci, Spinazolla and Veratti were more important...Jorginho was good no doubt but he was not the best player in any of the trophy winning teams...Messi on the other hand had only Lewandowski who bettered him in club football in terms of individual performance but he more than made up for it in the Copa America while Lewy and Poland couldn't make it past the group stage...

At this point, Messi is favorite and deservedly so...

Best player is not reserved for the player with most trophies even though trophies comes into play when the race is tight.

As for last season, many leagues were canceled thus awarding the best player off a couple of leagues and competitions that decided to go ahead wasn't fair...The virus was a good enough reason to suspend the award...

In most cases, those who choose to play for their motherland do so for these reasons;

1. Not good enough for their adopted team.
2. Good enough but tough competition in adopted team. Means might not get a lot of international caps.

These reasons are at the root of it, the ‘patriotism’ talk is just a deflection.

If a player is assured of his place in the national team of his adopted country, and they have a better chance of going far in the tournament, he will represent them.

Also put into consideration that these adopted countries were the ones who groomed the player. Most start at U13s or U16s I believe.

Ofcourse, there are exceptions to this, but they are rare.

P.S. Falcao would have had to compete with Fernando Torres and David Villa for a starting berth with Spain. Doubt the success rate if he tried in 2007.

The same idiötic tactics Ole deployed in the Europa final was what Southgate did. Southgate waited too long to unleash his subs at normal time to wrestle the game away from Italy.

He waited until the last minute of the extra time phase to bring on Rashford and Sancho(saved them for the shootout). If he had unleashed the duo on the Italian defence that was tiring and carrying few yellow cards, England could have won in normal time.

Southgate and Ole are indeed poor, Chiellini and Bonucci are not the fastest of CBs around even when they were much younger talk less of now yet he stuck with Kane up front when he should have removed Mount, for Rashford with Kane playing as the AMF where his creativity will be better utilized and Rashford up front to use his pace to work on Bonucci and Chiellini thus creating space for Kane. Another smart change would have seen Trippier replace by Sancho and not Saka...Saka is not direct, he rather wants the ball played to feet where he looks to combine with those around him compared to Sancho who will run at his marker...
