In as much as trades are regulated here...alot of Nigerians have been able to transit into some trades like electrician and millwright by challenging the red seal exams, but the guys recording success are usually grads of polytechnics in Nigeria with some hands on experience.

There are lots of trades in Canada, best bet to get on google to get a list and check which one you think is exciting for you. Some men cant even change a light bulb, so electricity might not be an option..some dont have good hand to eye cordination, hence won't do well in carpentry or welding...lol.

Imo,welding, electrician(commercial, power systems, plt), instrumentation, plumbing, carpentry, millwright and sheet metal e.t.c are all good.

Trades are good across canada. In terms of construction, you might want to look at rapidly expanding cities/provinces or huge industrial areas.
GIS...The guys from my previous place of employment had degrees in geography or GIS, and some have a geomatics/surveying diploma.
Bro (I'm guessing u r a bro grin thanks s lot for the info. I have hands on experience with diesel engines mechanical and electriCal systems aND generators. My copr states Richmond as my destination city but I have a buddy living in nanaimo so I'm thinking I should stay in nanaimo and then after I settle I could move if I decide to. However I've been hea ring a lot about how alberta is great for the trades but also hearing that there have been a lot of job losses due to the oil price slump is really discouraging. I'm booking my flight for me and family next week and considering the distance between alberta and bc, I wouldn't want to land in bc (where i have a friend but I'm not sure of job prospects) and start looking for a way to move to alberta in a short time. Won't b funny. Pls advise. Also I'd like to challenge the red seal exams ... how do I go about doing dat and when can I start

And are the Catholic schools free too?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by pauloverdi: 4:47pm On Jul 22, 2017
Many thanks madam... just got my application approved but will see if i can tidy up in time to get there early ... your response was very informative. Do u have any info about catholic schools in nanaimo?

impish:
Dear pauloverdi,

I am not yet in Canada but thought to share some of the feedback I had received from friends on some of the matters raised:
1. School - The two families I spoke with thought it best for school age kids (age 4 and above) to come in time for the September school resumption. They even suggested coming in August so that the kids could settle down a bit, and maybe even start to mingle with other neighbourhood kids in the parks or at swimming pools. All these just to get the kids well adjusted in time for the new term.

Also, you need to have your full immunisation records of the kids with you when you arrive, as all schools will require this. If you want your kids to attend Catholic schools (some of the best schools in Canada are Catholic), then you would need to show a baptismal certificate. You should have yours available for inspection as proof of you/your kids' Catholic faith during enrollment.

2. Weather - The feedback was also that summer was better to arrive in Canada so that one would be present as the weather gradually changed and got colder. More like allowing winter to gradually happen, as opposed to the shock of coming into Canada in the biting cold of December.

I hope the above helps, and apologies in advance if this is not helpful. As I said earlier, we have not relocated yet, but we are doing a bit of research from Nigeria, and this is the output of said research smiley

Thanks for all the wonderful posts so far. Very insightful. God bless u guys. My pr visa is valid till March and I would really love to hold on till January before I move. However impending school resumption in September for the kids and associated costs coupled with rent being due as early as December is making me consider leaving earlier. Please I'd like to get advice from someone who arrived canada with their family in the ember months. Bc to be precise. Was it easy getting the kids into school immediately or were there aNY special protocols to observe? Considering the earlier factors I stated should I wait till next yr (though I can move earlier but would love to do so in a more "tidy" fashion)? Im trying to book our flight tickets so I'm really trying to avoid a situation where ill be pressed to reschedule at the last minute. Me and wifey can quit our jobs easy... nothing stopping us. However my pals over there say the cold might b a concern and d best apartments are taken before September by students... just want to here some naija canadian tots on the matter

I used DHL and it was 19500 to send plus insurance, 21626 for pick up (2 passports). It seems VFS is 9800 per passport both ways. So DHL is more than twice that of VFS for 2 passports...but faster. People who have used VFS can shed more light on the time difference between the two so one can make an informed decision.

For mine sent 23rd June
Delivered 27th to AVO,
Cic approved and pick up letter 13th July
Contacted Dhl to pick up and pay 13th July
Delivered 17th July.
Cant say if weekends played a factor in my timeline.
Congrats on your copr. My passports got to AVO on 21 June and cic approved on the site yesterday morning. However I havent recieved any pick up email as at this morning. Does the mail come to my email or its in my cic account? Just a worried jjc abeg

You can certainly try but until you have evidence of legal right to remain in Canada, the process might be a waste of your time. This is because it is an expensive and lengthy process for Canadian employers to apply for LMIA - Labour Market Impact Assessment in order to bring in a worker from outside. They have to prove that they could not find anybody in the whole of Canada to do the job that they want to bring in a foreigner for. Canadian employers prefer to just hire someone who has the right to remain here or is a citizen and there are thousands of such people already in Canada with more coming in daily. It is not impossible if you can find a willing employer and you have a unique set of skills and qualifications like nuclear physics or brain surgery, etc but if you're like most of us that have commonplace work experiences, you're better of applying first for a Permanent Resident visa and then looking for work accordingly. I suggest you go to the first page of this thread (https://www.nairaland.com/2624318/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled) and learn what you need to do to get a PR visa, all the best.
This is one of the best and most informative responses I've seen in any online forum. I think everyone has something to learn from this. God bless you sir.

You have a good point , but it depends thou I ended up in the capital it is not so big.
If you are in IT or so and you are young may be the down is the high cost of living so u can land anywhere temporary and then your first job will make you move.

There are some crazy job offers in Toronto , but its competitive just like Naija the PWC, KPMG , employ more in the big cities.
Feel free to dream big , i remember seeing a graduate role in google and the pay was crazyyyy.

But later things like house rent and buying a house might be a disadvantage.
if buying a house in a small city is 400K in the big city it might go for like 600K ..so thats when u start to see the downside.
Thanks for your responose bro... I've got over 7 yrs experience as a heavy duty equipment mechanic... and wifey is a banker... I'm wondering if I can start my licensing process while I'm in nigeria. Would like to hear from others in the same line of work over there. Would appreciate it if you guys could hook me up with anyone you know so I can get some first hand advice on how to adapt fast

Hi guys. Have been hearing lots of advice about staying away from the big cities like Toronto and Vancouver because they're expensive to live in, but I'm thinking that the big fish are found in the ocean, not lakes and streams.. I'd like to hear from someone who immigrated for work and landed straight in any of the big cities. What was the transition like? Is it better to move to a small surburb first?

Good morning house. Im applying through the fsw program, and i received my ppr last week, and I'm about to send my documents. Please I need to know if I should fill and attach the imm008 form with my family passports I'm sending. All 4 members of my family are on the original application and nothing has changed as per family composition. Also I need to know if, when filling the imm0008 form, the location fill in as the place I wish to reside determines where I will have to live when I get to canada. I'm a heavy equipment mechanic and madam is a banker. I have a friend in Vancouver and also in Saskatchewan. I'm also thinking of settling in Alberta because of my line of work, but considering that I don't know anyone there yet I'm not sure if I should select Vancouver or saskachewan instead. Experienced guys Please advice me. I'm sending my passports today so I need to know

and im back with my first question....

I think I remember filling this imm008 for somewhere before... I guess it was when I was filling the sinp form (which I never completed after I got an ita) or after my express entry ITA while filling the application forms. however I don't remember the particular region I selected.
1.can I select a new region as response to the question; where do u intend to live in Canada?
2. whish region is more popular with Nigerian immigrants
3. which region has more job opportunities for people with banking experience and people with heavy duty equipment maintenance experience?
4. is there easy mobility within the regions for new immigrants i.e if I chose Toronto and I want to move to Saskatchewan after my first month, is that possible?

abeg advice this jjc abeg

Hi House. Ive been an ardent (though) silent devotee of this thread for a while now. just by following your good advice every step of the way, without paying shishi to any agent, I got my PPR yesterday. UNA TOO MUCHHHHH OOOOOOOOOOO! in the words of that papa in the mtn radio jingle; God will bless Youuuu! God will continue to bless Youuuuu! words cannot adequately express my delirious joy. I owe each and every member of this glorious thread a hug. please feel free to come claim yours in Canada anytime soon!!!!

thanks for all your questions and thanks for all your answers. the questions have been the most important resource, because each new question brings a unique perspective to the topic in question... a perspective someone else reading might have overlooked if the question wasn't asked in the first place. God bless Youuuu lovely question asking people. una tooo much. being on this thread make me feel like Im crowdsourcing my brain... lol. GOD will not forgive me if I didn't post my heartfelt appreciation today. abeg make I go fill my IMM008. I will return with questions very soon...lol

Hi,

I hope I understand your question....nevertheless I will try to drop my 2 cents. Writing your letters in upper case is a no no - apart from the fact that it will be difficult for you to write within the time frame, I also think it will be difficult for the examiner to read. Just start each (new) sentence with a capital letter (like we always do) .....Names etc. too will start with capital letters.

Try to read the instructions before you start though but I am 150% sure there will be no such instruction as "write in upper case letters"

All the best!
I think upper case is easier to read. at work I write reports everyday in upper case and its the norm. I did same too for my test and I scored 8.5 in the writing test. just relax bro... you will be fine. and make sure u time yourself. during practice and during the test.
