"Your mates are out there, doing something meaningful with their lives"..mom yelled at me. I was in the sitting room watching Game of Thrones series at 7 am in the morning. "Do they have two heads?" "Why can't you start something? Anything. Apply For a teaching Job" These are scenarios a lot of graduates face while waiting for the “perfect job”. {I made a previous about the types of pressures unemployed graduates face} You can't blame your parents. After putting you through school. Imagine the fees and other expenses, just like any human, they expect a great return on their investment. In fact, they want it to yield greater interest. And imagine when you are unemployed for over 3 months. They can't stand it. Truth be told, you'll be like a football player bought from another club but can't score goals. It might be our fault, or not. But the bottom line is you are unemployed. Truth is that pressure might make you depressed, some take irresponsible decisions, some even commit suicide, some rush into marriage and others yield to peer pressure. It can either make or break you but you have control over it. Here are tips to help you ease the pressure from your parents 1. Restore or Build their faith in you You must earn your parents trust, It is important. Try as much as possible to make them understand your plight. You must also Be open and productive. You must remain idle or stay at home all day long. Go out there, discover new opportunities. When they see all these, they will ease their pressure and give you all the necessary support you need to excel. 2. Make sacrifices, stop demanding “I need a new phone, pocket money, laptop, shoes……….”.the list goes on. You must learn to stop being totally dependent on your parents, uncles, and aunties. Learn to let go of some things especially the excesses. Try as much as possible to save during your "period of Trial". It shows that you can take RESPONSIBILITY. 3. Do some volunteer work Join any group, whether at church, community or anywhere similar. Do some charity work, give back to the society. This will add to your experience professional or not and will help you acquire leadership and management skills. 4. Do not react (The golden rule) Honor Your Father and Your Mother... It is the first commandment with a promise. Ephesians 6:2 You must not react to the pressure. We've seen cases of frustrated graduates hitting their parents or disrespecting them. Don't forget, You too will become a father/mother Someday. Then you'll understand their position. Try as much as possible to absorb the pressure 5. Be strategic and update them on progress. You must be proactive. Finding the best Job can be tasking but it’s very possible. Update your parents on the progress of your Job search and they'll encourage you Like I mentioned earlier, do not react. Honor your parents, try to understand their point of view. You are a million dollar prize just sitting on a shelf. They want you to soar, they want you to be their pride and if you have a vision, you'll make it. For more examples of pressure you face from parents or elderly folks, drop them in the comment box. Being a graduate is one of the best feelings you’ll remember for a very long time. You remember the Final Year Week, The departmental dinners, the Water Baptisms etc. Fast forward months Later, You are off to serve your fatherland in an unknown state. Then you are back home after NYSC. one month Two months Three Months. . . NO JOB!! Pressure sets in. Here are the types of pressures unemployed graduates face during this period 1. Parental Pressure: If you decide to go settle back at home, your parents will definitely be concerned about you. They’ll advise you, ridicule you, pray for you and still be overly concerned about you. Some will force you to take a job you don’t love especially when you are the eldest and have so many younger siblings and other responsibilities to take care of. 2. Peer Pressure Peer pressure (or social pressure) is the direct influence on people by peers, or an individual who gets encouraged to follow their peers by changing their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform to those of the influencing group or individual. – Wikipedia You have lots of friends and acquaintances. Some will oppress you with their new jobs, cars, clothes, and gadgets. We all have that one friend that got a slot in central bank or NNPC before graduation and you are wondering how you are going to catch up with them. They throw reunions and other gatherings but you are afraid to attend because you don’t know how to explain the fact that you are jobless. Peer pressure can either drive you to become better or can make you depressed and desperate. You must learn to believe in yourself and take practical and necessary steps to achieve your dreams. 3. Societal Pressure Societal pressures are expectations that affect the entire community, or specific parts of it, like the pressure to get married and have children.– Wikipedia Societal pressures are not really as powerful as the other kinds. In order to avoid societal pressure, most graduates are forced to relocate to another city. The female graduate is expected to be seen with a serious fiancé and everyone is expecting a wedding date sooner or later. For the male graduates, you are expected to land a big job, drive a car and take up responsibilities immediately. There are people in your environment always asking and inquiring about what you are currently doing. Most of them don’t even have a solution. These pressures are just there to urge you to become a better person and achieve great success. Most people especially our friends and family do have great intentions and care in one way or another but sometimes, these pressures might not be helpful. You must not allow them to have a negative impact on you. Is there any type of pressure we did not consider? NwaAmaikpe:Not My Son sir... Happened to the Mentioned Mother Up there in the Post. She asked us to share this until Justice is served. |

A Grieving Mother { Mrs Stella Offor BAKARE} Is crying For Justice For Her Deceased Child. Here is Her Account of what actually transpired: ================================================================= Tobi, my only child (a male, good-natured 14-year-old) was admitted into Duro Soleye Hospital, Allen Avenue, Lagos State on the morning of Saturday, 10 June 2017. He died on the morning of Tuesday, 13 June 2017 due to the negligence of Doctors Korede and Awe , who were on duty and their employers, Duro Soleye Hospital. What happened: 1. When Tobi was admitted, the hospital, surprisingly, had no wheel chair to take him to his ward. The nurse on duty put him on my back to get to the ward. 2. Duro Soleye Hospital placed Tobi on oxygen on Sunday, 11 June 2017. The oxygen cylinder was plastered and obviously not in good condition (see attached pictures). This had me worried, but I was more concerned about my son's survival. 3. Tobi had a CT scan at Echoscan on Monday, 12 June 2017. Duro Soleye had no functional ambulance to take us to Echoscan for the test, we had to pay N5,000 for the laboratory to bring their ambulance to pick Tobi up. 4. I repeatedly had to call the attention of the nurse or doctor on duty to attend to Tobi, to replace the drip, or to carry out their lawful duties. The nurses on night duty were never prompt or responsive, always complaining and reluctant to do their work. Throughout our stay in the hospital, the bed sheets were never changed. The floor was also cleaned with only water, instead of disinfectant. 5. We got the CT scan results at about 5pm. The doctors [OE2] on duty saw the results and had no clue how to proceed with the treatments. This was clear evidence of the doctors manifesting clear incompetence in the assessment of Tobi. At that point, I began to panic but could not take him to another hospital because he was already on oxygen. The doctors on duty tried in vain to get directions from the Medical Director, Dr. Odunowo, but could not reach him till about 11pm. 6. In the evening of that same day (i.e., Monday, 12 June 2017), I asked the lady doctor on night duty (Dr Korede) and the nurses to change to another oxygen cylinder to avoid midnight exhaustion. I did this, because their practice was to sleep throughout the night. Regardless of my lawful directive as a paying client and mother of the patient, they refused to change it, insisting that there was still a little oxygen left. 7. The oxygen got exhausted while the doctors and nurses were sound asleep. The doctors and nurses had even forgotten to do the routine ward rounds and could not categorically say when the oxygen got exhausted! The doctors and nurses on duty failed to attend promptly to Tobi, even though he required urgent medical attention. 8. Due to my diligence as a mother, I discovered that the oxygen was exhausted, I called the doctor and nurses to change to another cylinder. None of them knew how to fix the new cylinder, they were arguing among themselves whether it was 'rubber type' or 'plier type'! They subsequently called an elderly man, hospital driver, from downstairs[ who fiddled and fiddled with it and seemingly "fixed" it. Prior to my discovery, the doctor and nurses failed to change the oxygen cylinder, a task which should have been done under any circumstance for the good of Tobi. 9. The doctor (Dr Korede), nurses and the elderly man then left the ward and the doctor switched off the light saying light can damage his eyes. This heightened my fear; after some minutes I switched on the light and called out to the doctor, who came and declared Tobi dead. It turned out that no oxygen passed from the cylinder to Tobi! 10. Also, mucus in his mouth was not sucked all through the night. Tobi was unlawfully deprived of his right to life by the actions and inactions of the medical personnel on duty. He died a horrific and painful death with plenty choking mucus (picture attached), which the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Odunowo, saw himself. I informed the Medical Director of this development when he resumed for duty on Tuesday, 13 June 2017. I also wrote a formal letter (copy attached) to the hospital, which they refused to acknowledge. I gave the hospital my phone number. I want justice for my son, whose life, dreams and aspirations were illegally cut short. One of his dreams was to study Medicine in the university, so he could help save lives. Unfortunately, the same institution he looked forward to being a part of, woefully failed him. Doctors owe their patients a duty of care and must never be negligent in their duties. Yours' sincerely, Stella Offor BAKARE #JusticeForTobi Please help us get Justice

@Shogat Permission to feature your view on my Blog |
Dear Honourable Minister of Health, Introductions I hope you are well. My name is Dayo Oluwole (@kasherltd), and I am one of your many followers on Twitter. You are (arguably) the most Twitter savvy Minister of Health that Nigeria has ever had. Your open lines of communication and responsiveness in dealing with issues on social media are highly commendable. Bravo! The purpose of this is letter is an appeal to strengthen the existing health framework in Nigeria to ensure that malaria deaths are reduced. I am aware of all the work that is being done by the Ministry and funding partners to meet the 2020 target towards pre-elimination. As I have worked with NMEP and other incredible local and international partners in the demand generation space regarding malaria. My Story I am one of those rare and fortunate people that don’t get malaria. However, on a trip to the UK last month I felt tired. I did not consider this to be unusual or alarming. As I am in good health, eat well and keep fit; I put it down to work stress. When I arrived in the UK on 31 March, I noticed I had a slight fever; I took medication and went straight bed. I was fine on Saturday but by Sunday morning, I knew something was not quite right. I was admitted to a hospital in Blackpool on 1 of April, where I had tests and it was confirmed that I had malaria. At 1.00 am on 2 April I was moved to North Manchester Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit. While I am not a medical doctor, I have a good understanding of the first line treatment and was already wondering where the medication was going to come from. One of the registrars explained the treatment plan (which was available) and said that given my condition he wanted to repeat more tests. Within an hour tests came back at 4.6% parasitraemia. According to the UK guidelines 3% was considered severe. I realized I was extremely unwell, however, I felt completely ‘safe’ in the hands of the unit’s team, not that I had much choice at the time. During the 4 days at North Manchester hospital, the doctors and nurses focused on my clinical care and ensured that I was able to leave the hospital with 0.01% parasitraemia on the 5th of April. I have never seen such an incredible team of people! Appeal I am unsure if severe malaria would have been picked up in Nigeria, especially given the average Nigerian’s aversion to testing before treatment and our preference to self medicate. My blood pressure became dangerously low, blood sugar levels dropped and there were concerns of a build-up of fluid on my lungs. If I was in Nigeria, I would have been given medication and sent home. Because malaria is not viewed as the deadly disease it is! If, in line with “World Malaria Day” 2017’s theme we want to end malaria for good, can you PLEASE continue to ensure that policies that support testing before treatment are adhered to in Nigeria? Can you also continue with your strategic plan and ensure that Primary Health Centres are equipped with the much needed laboratory resources to provide malaria tests in a timely manner? I don’t pretend to begin to imagine the complexities that will go into taking action in respect of my appeal, but I feel compelled to share my story in the interest and welfare of my fellow Nigerians. I believe that it should be everyone’s collective responsibility to ensure that the number of deaths from malaria (especially infants and children) are significantly reduced. At the Manchester hospital, I asked one of the nurses about malaria related deaths in the unit, she said that she has been working there for 15 years and she was not aware of anyone ever dying from malaria. Granted, North Manchester Hospital doesn’t see anything near as many malaria cases as in Nigeria and I am not making any comparisons with the UK health system and ours, but can you as the ‘Doctor of the People’, lead the charge where we commit to not losing anymore Nigerians to malaria? Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, but more importantly for hopefully taking the necessary next steps to reduce deaths from malaria. I am making this appeal on bended knees in line with our Yoruba culture, when addressing our elders! Once again, thank you for your attention in this matter. Yours sincerely Dayo Oluwole https:///lgqz6tb #WorldMalariaDay #SevereMalaria cc: Lalasticlala , Dominique
