Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) is always welcomed with mixed feelings by all Nigerian graduates. Why? Because of the epic tales – of good, bad, ugly and unbelievable experiences of young Nigerians during the nation’s youth corp programme. Anyone who has undergone this compulsory one-year service will identify with the following… (but if you haven’t yet served your fatherland, anticipate them). Posting Tension This is the first of many challenges faced by youth corp members. The fear of an unknown destination is one that prospective corp members usually have to grapple with. Even if your uncle is friends with the director-general, there are times when you wonder what would happen if you’re posted to a remote town. While some cherish the chance to explore a new culture, others dread having to go far away from home. Camp Activities and Morning Drills From registration to the 4am morning drills, the 3-week orientation exercise can be a nightmarish experience for corp members. Daily lectures which are intended to educate and expose corp members to entreprenurial opportunities, could drag on for hours, such that corp members often get distracted and begin to dream of lunch time. PPA (a.k.a Primary Place of Assignment) This is considered the one of the biggest NYSC challenges. While a few youth corp members are spared of this challenge , those affected can testify to the difficulty in securing an organisation to work with for the service year. Many youth corp members eventually resign to fate and settle with becoming a teacher for the mandatory one year scheme. Monthly Clearance This is a monthly NYSC ritual and anyone that has passed through the scheme would understand how tiring the process can be. Getting the monthly clearance done is most often in four stages. Before a youth corper can get paid their monthly allowance, they first have to submit a clearance letter for signing, carry out thumb printing, write down account details and eventually submit the files and await bank alerts. This process, despite being seemingly straightforward, is the true definition of “easier said than done”. Accommodation For those who get posted to states outside their states of residence, accommodation can be a big problem. Getting a comfortable place on a corper’s salary can be a bit challenging. Catcalls Walking on the streets in your NYSC uniform has its rewards — catcalls. Ladies in particular, can relate to this. You’ll have to decide whether to ignore or acknowledge “corper”, “Otondo” and every other nickname Nigerians have coined for corp members, over the years. Just like people say, “Wonders shall never end”… this simply means we would keep seeing wonders every day of our life. I am a serving corps member somewhere in the Southern region of Nigeria and I surely experience wonders every time, if not at my Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), it would be at my house on somewhere else. One of the wonders I’ve been experiencing since I got here, came during the just concluded third terminal examination in my school. After I’ve set and submitted the exam questions for the two subjects I taught last term, no complain was made by the examination committee, but to my greatest surprise, on the examination day of one of the subjects, some of the questions I submitted were deliberately missing from the printed exam paper (yes deliberately!) because when I went to complain, I was told that they couldn’t print all the questions I submitted simply because the questions were more than what a single A4 paper could accommodate. WAIT oooooooo…Did you get the reason very well Okay, let me rephrase, all my exams questions were not printed (Questions 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the theory section were omitted), because my PPA (a private school) didn’t want to spend money to print an exam question on more than one A4 paper!WHOOPS. Exams has already started, questions were not complete, the school said they can’t print the remaining questions, marking scheme has been drafted…Wetin I go do…Okay, I had two options, it’s either I forget about the missing questions, change marking scheme and award free marks or I find a means of getting the missing questions to the students to make the exam be in the way it was designed to be. So I chose the latter option and found a way of getting the remaining questions across to the students. Thank God I took the picture of the questions before I submitted, (digital world, we can snap anything ehn, lmao), if not, I wouldn’t have gotten the remaining questions as the exam committee couldn’t find the paper question I submitted myself for them to print (WHAT A COMMITTEE!!!). Okay………….I quickly wrote the remaining questions on the hall wall, so at the end, the students had 2 sources of questions, the printed paper with them and the wall...LOL!!!! …and that was how the Exam in my PPA was able to take place successfully, even though I had to dictate the questions repeatedly for the students just to make sure they all get the questions.(forming serious corper, heheheheheheheh) WHAT A WONDER!!!!!!!!! Thanks for reading!!!! Oladapo Siyanbola Twitter and I.G handle- @dapo_dmart visit corperdiary.com for more NYSC updates

*Who is a graduate?* Just now, back from Editorial CDS – a home of intellectuals and abode of intelligent editors who are writers and thinkers. Yes! I stepped out of the pavilion with a friend and a writer whose ink never run dry to hop on a motorcycle which we did after series of price-reduction oriented augment. We successfully brought down the price to #100 from #200…winks. Don’t mind where we are going. My friend and I were discussing as usual when we heard the bike man said ‘I graduated from school 7 years ago and I served in …. ’ I was walloped in annoyance, unhappiness and reduction. I hated his dressing…suffering from lack of financial acumen? I thought! Why won’t he? Why biking? He is not a graduate? I thought he had served too. I asked myself these questions. I was calamitous when I recollected that 80% of bike men I had met since I commenced my youth service were graduates and even shared some of their experiences with me when they were serving as corps member. Note that it is not wrong to be a bike man…I have heard of a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, who was a taxi driver for a period of two years after school and later retired and built a reputable life for himself and relatives. But, when you see a poor man, you will definitely identify poverty with him. This is the case with these ‘schooled’ bike men I had met. OK! Do you know the first bike man we met was putting on a corper’s jungle boot like ours and was rough, unlike us though… So who is a graduate? According to the Encarta Dictionary, is a holder of degree; somebody who has obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college, university, or other higher educational institution. Frankly Speaking, we need more than holders of degree…we need people that can create jobs for themselves irrespective of their excuses, as long as the government is not doing enough to provide jobs for all and sundry. We need graduates who can fend for themselves, families and society even when the going gets tough. We need creative graduates who can break traditional trends and nominal terminals. We need graduates that can break the box and allow others to see through the sea. We need graduates that can make other graduates proud and tell the society that being a graduate is not a curse. We need intelligent graduates that can survive in all situations and can turn their book knowledge around for money. Being a graduate is not a curse! I am a proud graduate! Loving you is not an option! *You can do well to get a copy of my latest eBook – Start With What You Have* #DiaryofanEkitiKorper Ifetife Photo credit: bbc.co.uk visit us at corperdiary.com for more NYSC Experiences

HOW MANY OF YOU CAN STOMACH THE TRUTH ABOUT TODAY'S NIGERIA.... ![]() WHY WE ARE KILLING CORRUPTION Yinka Ogunnubi Wrote: 1. Allow me to share a few thoughts on the unique relationship between our whole economic system and corruption. And why we need to stay the course 2. First we must realize that Our social and economic system was not just corrupt, CORRUPTION WAS THE SYSTEM. Corruption was what actually sustained it. 3. From the Banking sector to the Oil & gas sector to the Real Estate sector to the Military apparatus, the system was oiled by Corruption Inc. 4. Let's start with the banking sector. The financial system was full of cash. Government cash placed to extract value for corrupt officials and not government 5. Of Course, this cash ensured liquidity which supposedly meant banks could lend at higher volumes and cheaper rates. But was that really the case? 6. Yes! if you were a big corporate body or you had a big last name or you were politically influential. But if u were an Small Medium Enterprises, SME, sorry you're On Your Own, OYO 7. Nevertheless this whole idea of Government cash fueling the system was d height of inefficiency since Government was still borrowing at record levels. 8. How about the Real Estate Sector. This sector fed off massively from corruption flows. Property became over-valued because some could pay over the odds. 9. Property yields that were modest went sky-high. The result? High vacancy rates. Property owners could afford to wait years for that big sale. 10. How about Oil & Gas Sector? Where do you want to start from? Do you want to start from the subsidy regime? From fake consumption figures to false claims? 11. Do you want to start with the cesspool of corruption called the NNPC and corrupt swap deals and bedroom bidding's? We know the result. 12. The result was that this corrupt system enriched some & made them billionaires. Their wealth trickled down to others. The Economy boomed. 13. Because they had cash, their wife's, kids, side chics, relatives, friends could buy properties, invest in companies, buy stocks, travel the world 14. What about the military? Professionalism was replaced with Business agility with Generals turning into contractors & becoming mega-rich. 15. Service Chiefs and Top Military Brass, were collecting billions from false procurement contracts, inflated payrolls and investing the cash 16. They and their kids bought properties (at above mkt price), invested in start-ups. The cash flowed freely...some back to us. We all smiled 17. How about the Police? Don't even get me started. This organisation gets allocated billions in the Federal budget & gets donations frm State and private organisation 18. Yet, its the same organisation that a current IG thinks it is ok for a former IG to retire with 4 exotic cars bought with tax payers money. # Sigh 19. I could go on and on. But the truth of the matter is this: The economy was on drugs - Hard Drugs. It was addicted to being run by Corruption Flows. 20. Like any addict, the difficult part is to be clean. Ever seen an addict in detox? Its not for the faint-hearted. Reason why its called "Tough Love" 21. What this government, the government of Pres. Muhammadu Buhari, has tried to do, as difficult and as unfriendly as it seems, is to wean this economy away from the stimulus of corruption flows 22. And like any addict, the system is fighting back. Its resisting medication. Its crying out for the corruption flows to come back so it has relief and gets high again. 23. Its the reason why banks will cry out against TSA..a system meant to ensure efficiency and that value is given to the due owner - Govt. 24. Its the reason why the Oil marketers will try to blackmail the entire country just to ensure they keep getting their subsidies. 25. Its the reason some avengers will blow up oil Wells just because their security contracts and access to easy cash is blocked or made difficult. 26. Its the reason why some will pad a budget; ignore calls for transparency like # OpenNASS & carry on with impunity. Because they are hooked on the Corruption drugs. 27. Any good care-giver will tell you..."Never let the cries of the patient deceive you...Tough Love demands you stay on course". 28. After sometime, the economy will find its point of equilibrium. Hopefully it will be a point no longer driven by corruption flows but real Trade 29. The other day, I went to price a property that was going for N70m about 2 years ago. Guess the new price of the property? N40m! 30. The real estate market is finding its equilibrium. Its coming to terms with the true value of the assets. The other sectors will follow. 31. So when next you hear the phrase "Corruption Fighting Back", know its not just a cliché, its actually the spasm of an addict trying to get rid of drugs in the system; to get clean. We must therefore, support the war on corruption. God Bless Nigeria. God bless us, everyone. and if i may add -our political parties that became cartels for plundering our commonwealth rather than organs of national leadership. As well as religious bodies that have become tacit advocates of corrupt officials in exchange for a piece of the juicy poisonous pie. |
