Monte Carlo Masters:

Argentine Guillermo Canas has pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters Series, organisers have confirmed.

Canas, who beat world number one Roger Federer at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters Series, is suffering from leg pains.

Americans James Blake and Andy Roddick have also withdrawn from the claycourt tournament, which starts on Sunday.

ATP Valencia:

Defending champion Nicolas Almagro will meet Potito Starace in the final of the ATP Valencia Open after overcoming fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura in Saturday's semi-final.

Third seed Almagro, who won his only ATP title in last year's tournament, edged victory over wildcard Ventura, finally winning through 6-7 6-4 6-4.

The unseeded Starace got the better of Spain's Ivan Navarro Pastor 6-7 6-0 7-5 in a match that lasted almost two and a half hours.

Navarro Pastor, who replaced David Ferrer in the main draw after the top seed withdrew with a back injury, took the first set on a tie break, but Starace bounced back to rip through the second without reply before clinching the decider.

ATP Houston:

Ivo Karlovic utilised a single break of service to upset world number 10 Tommy Haas 7-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships.

Karlovic will meet 84th-ranked Albert Montanes, who defeated American Vince Spadea 6-4 6-4 in Saturday's semi-finals.

Argentine Mariano Zabaleta, a 6-1 6-2 victor over Juergen Melzer of Austria, will face American James Blake in the other semi-final.

The second-seeded Blake overcame a second-set disaster to bounce number eight Juan Monaco of Argentina, 7-6 1-6 7-6.

Jelena Jankovic cruises through to the semi finals of the Family Circle Cup taking only 49 minutes to brush aside Katerina Srebotnik 6-2 6-0.

Venus Williams also progresses through to the semi finals of the Family Circle Cup with a tough 6-4 7-5 win over Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Top seed Nicole Vaidisova was dumped out of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday in a second-round loss to Michaella Krajicek. The 17-year-old Czech took the first set before losing 4-6 6-4 6-3 to her Dutch opponent, ranked 54 in the world.

The tournament, already hit by a series of injury withdrawals, lost another big name after third seed Serena Williams retired from her match with Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan with a right groin strain.

The Australian Open champion was trailing 5-3 in the first set when she decided she could not continue.

Meanwhile, it took Venus Williams less than 50 minutes to demolish Vasilisa Bardina 6-2 6-1 and reach the last 16 of the Family Circle Cup.

China's Jie Zheng eliminated Israeli fifth seed Shahar Peer 6-2 6-3 to advance to the WTA Charleston third round.

As predicted by prophet David, Nigeria was trounced 5 - nil by Poland.

The results of the remaining two matches are:

Apart from some interested journalists and some NTF officials, I doubt if anyone went to watch the matches. The match was not televised, not even highlights were shown on the news.

So many reasons were given for the poor show by the players. Lack of sponsors, inadequate funding, poor administration, inexposure were among the reasons given, just to mention a few.

It was even reported that Igbinovia blamed his losses on the shoe he wore during the tournament.
