Politics / To The Populace By Dr. Femi Obafemi by Pectoris(m): 3:35pm On Aug 28, 2014
To the populace,
I, who began my adult life spending alternate days with
corpses, who carry bones in my bags and books that
break my back. Who spend the prime of my youth in the
grime of wards. Who have already witnessed a lifetime’s
share of deaths. Who learn about depression but fail to
recognise it in myself......i have this to say:
YES,I swore to the hippocratic oath,
NO my job is not humanitarian (verb: Concerned with or
seeking to promote human welfare, Noun: a person who
seeks to promote human welfare,a philantropist),I am
humanitarian because I am a human being not because I
am a medical doctor.
YES I became a medical doctor because I love people,I
love to see the sick get well,I love to see people happy,I
love to serve people.
YES I am a medical doctor because I am not after money,
I will be humanitarian as a medical doctor if you will full
fill some trivial conditions:
When its time to pay my rent my landlord should waive it
When I want to go to work in the morning,I should pick
any car from my car dealer neighbour who should also
waive the price tag.
When I take my son to school the proprietress should
waive the fees.
When my wife needs cloths the boutique should waive the
price tags.
When we get to the market, the market women should give
us foodstuffs for free.
Petrol stations should always fill my tank without a price
to it.
My aged parents and other dependants should be well
taken care of.
Do this and I will be humanitarian as a medical doctor.
But when you folks hear that I am a medical doctor you
double the price of your wares, and when I ask you why
you say 'sebi you be doctor'.
When i ask for a commiserate pay for my skill and
work, you fling humanitarian on the table, you dangle
hippocratic oath in front of me.
when death knocks at the door, I am looked upon as a
god. When i accept the challenge,I am looked upon as an
angel. When the patient is cured,I am looked upon as a
common person. When i ask for my fee, i become the
devil.
I went on strike to protest the state of my beloved
profession,to ask the chief servants of the country to right
all the wrongs,so my father, mother, sister, friends and
neighbours will stop going to India to get vitamin Bco,
I protested so the health sector will be one of the best in
the world,
I protested so my kids will have good specialists to care
for them tomorrow not half baked ones.
What did I get instead,my neighbours insulting me,my non
medical doctor friends sneering at me,my government
sacking me suspending my training and jeopardising the
medical future of my family, signing the death sentence of
the people they swore to protect.
Wait we have been talking about me,let's talk about you:
I remember the last time your son was ill and you brought
him to the private hospital where I was working, there I
was in the consulting room and the first question you
asked me was 'are you a paediatrician'?.I said no and you
walked out with your precious little prince to shop for a
paediatrician, now your explorer is hale and healthy.
Let's go back to the hospital, this paediatrician if he has
been sacked a couple of years ago,if residency training
program has been suspended by previous administrations
he will not be available for you today and what would
have become of your bundle of joy?.
The government sacked residents and suspended
residency training and you were jubilating saying' that
serves them right, pompous and egoistic fellows,do away
with them, who are they sef'?Give us Barnabas!!!!
I will not explain to you how it will come back and bite
you,but definately it will.
I am a medical doctor,I am proud of my knowledge,I will
fuel my ego with my skill,my hands are gifted and with the
skill I will get wealth.

Jokes Etc / The Death Of Handshake! By Michael John by Pectoris(m): 11:25am On Aug 19, 2014
With total submission to God and profound regret; with gratitude to God for a life well spent we announce the untimely transition to glory of Handshake. May its soul rest in perfect peace! Handshake died after a brief illness caused by a disease known as Ebola. It is survived by Chest Fist Pump and Hand Wave to mourn its death. Funeral arrangement had since been announced by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the House of Representatives.

Handshake would be remembered for the many countless interactions it caused and how it became a symbol of affection - a preferred way of greeting. It had various forms like the Firm Handshake or Loose Handshake. It led to body contact and a show of love. Though no one knew when Handshake was born, it has been widely agreed that it may have begun after Eve was created and presented to Adam. Adam may have wondered where to touch in this new beautiful creature and opted to reach out and shake her hand. From that time until the death of Handshake in Nigeria, it had served many useful purposes. Adam and Eve got more intimate, as you would remember, and Cain was born. Then Abel. Handshake grew and waxed stronger.

As it grew it, acquired new dimensions. Richard Cartani of the Christian Science Monitor said, "The gentlest Handshake I ever had was when I shook hands with boxing legend, Mohammed Ali, when he was the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion. He gently placed his palm in my hands and removed them again. But whenever I have had to shake hands with a skinny, scrawny man, he had tried to impress me with his strength by trying to break the bones in my hand." Such were the uses of Handshake that those with strength treated it with respect and those without strength disrespected it.

Handshake never attended school nor acquired any education. It was still the same thing from ancient Oyo Kingdom till date. Palm to palm and eyeball to eyeball. You were not supposed to hold on to the hand longer than necessary, except you had an ulterior motive. So Handshake had its own abuses and uses as well. But it endured and no one ever put a tag on it like you have on cigarette. Something like, "Handshakers are liable to die young." That was until now.

Handshake was in good condition and did not have any known ailment until a few months ago when one Patrick Sawyer arrived Nigeria. The unfortunate Sawyer brought ebola into the country and with it the fear of ebola. The fear of ebola led to a phobia for Handshakes and that was the beginning of the slow death of Handshake. Now the popular wisdom is that "Shaking of hands may be injurious to your health."

Ebola is not a funny thing. Says old soldier Jumbo: "A disease that has no respect for doctors and nurses is straight from hell and a rampaging assassin. It does not even allow doctors to treat you. What kind of madness is this one?"

Ebola is a mean disease. Jumbo adds that "it has managed to make Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) sound respectable. With AIDS no one runs from you and you could be treated comfortably by doctors. I would rather have HIV than that demon called ebola."

He says it is not surprising that while one Bola Tinubu is firing from all cylinders in the political scene, now a thing that rhymes with "Bola" is on rampage in the West African coast and has sneaked into Nigeria. "It may have arrived here because it was attracted by our having too many Bolas in Nigeria." While the others are physical Bolas, this one is e-bola; and that is why it has gone viral like everything digital.

The late Handshake was a very important member of society. It was even used to seal important covenants and agreements and as a symbol of peace. Handshake would be remembered as the most used social activity in the history of mankind - exceeding Smiles and Hugs. Everyone used it hundreds of times every week and loved it. Before the advent of ebola, the only threat to Handshake was the common cold.

The common cold was not a threat to anybody. With a fix of aspirin or pro-cold, it could be fixed. But ebola has nothing like pro-ebola and it is completely out of control. If you contact it, it manifests in less than 21 days and before you could send a letter home, you may be too sick and before you know it you would be quarantined and stopped from meeting other people.

Being quarantined is actually some kind of euphemism for a death sentence. You are not kept there because help is coming, you are kept there because there is an urgent need to protect the society from you. You have become an outcast and a social threat. It is not a condition anyone looks forward to and when you consider that a simple thing like good, old Handshake can become a more serious crime than embezzlement, you have to avoid it. Even the late Gen. Sani Abacha's son who allegedly colluded with his father in embezzling billions of Naira has not been quarantined. Even armed robbers do not get quarantined, they only get shoved into prison and allowed to interact with other inmates. They are allowed to receive visitors. But with ebola, being quarantined is like being put in a coffin - only that the coffin is a room and you are allowed to walk about but not talk with or see anyone.

It is not the fault of Handshake at all, but Handshake is as dead as if it were its fault. The greatest betrayers of Handshake may be said to be those in authority in Abuja who announced its death. Before Handshake died, it lamented that after so many years of meritorious services to Nigerians in facilitating reconciliation and peace, it had been dumped unceremoniously because of a disease called ebola. It said, "Nigerians fail to understand that before ebola I was there." It is a pathetic and tearful story. Even my little nephew would not shake my hand because he was told in school that ebola has killed Handshake. Patrick Sawyer, you see what you have done?

Health / The 8 (eight) Lessons Ebola Is Teaching Africans By Tunde Asaju by Pectoris(m): 9:47am On Aug 19, 2014
When your president announces N1.9 million funds to fight a scourge only to end up launching a hand sanitizer with pomp and fanfare, there is trouble everywhere.

Death is the only teacher greater than adversity. To most Naija people, it does not matter what Patrick Sawyer's wife says about her late husband's motive for exporting Ebola to Naija; here he is a viral terrorist.

Vivienne Sawyer believes her husband came here because he thought that 'Big Brother' had the vaccine or the cure. If true, he was acting on the statement of our propaganda minister. At any rate, it is faster to get to Lagos for Monrovia than to fly to New York. We'll never find out about Sawyer's mens rea. Ebola is breaking down the barriers of culture, religion and class. By the last count, it has taught ten visible lessons to the continent that hardly bulges.

Lesson 1:
Lesson one says you can speak ill of the dead. President Jones broke the taboo when he literally called late Sawyer a viral terrorist. That boldness sent citizens petitioning heaven to send Sawyer to the worst part of hell. If God answers such prayers, then Sani Abacha has a worthy companion; years back, the late Gani Fawehinmi prayed God to send Abacha to that part of gehenna.

Lesson 2:
The second lesson is - that cluelessness is a bottomless pit. When your president announces N1.9 million funds to fight a scourge only to end up launching a hand sanitizer with pomp and fanfare, there is trouble everywhere. Last week, a Nigerian kid in New York asked his parents if it is true that most Africans still live on trees. The question jolted the parents but the kid wondered why the head of Africa's fasted growing economy was smiling sheepishly at a hand sanitizer that they were born to know and use in lavatories, train stations, shopping malls and classrooms.

lesson 3:
Lesson three says in a battle between tradition and survival, the latter always win. Suddenly, the ancient tradition of keeping the dead refrigerated while the living goes a borrowing for pomp and fanfare is dying. So are traditions, which insist that the dead be interred in their bedrooms, for their souls to rest in peace. With the arrival of Ebola, cremation is in; the infected and suspected are quarantined and when they die all the drama of widows and inconsolable siblings or children threatening to jump into the graves have ceased. They all watch obsequies from a safe distance.

Lesson 4:
Lesson four says, it's binding even if you don't shake on it. The idea of sealing a deal with a handshake or pumping the hands of friends unnecessarily is dead. Ebola-ravaged countries are quickly evolving inventive non-contact forms of greetings and sealing deals. Give it to the first wife, Mama Peace who test-rode the knuckled two hands greeting in Warsaw, Poland last week. Gone are the handshakes that transcend the elbow and the infamous French kiss. Mama Peace invented this one, two hands jammed together in one.

Lesson 5:
Lesson five is a reveals that religious leaders are human after all. We used to think that they are so holy they do not use the lavatory, now we know better. Who knows, Ebola may even cure spiritual charlatanism. Lagos health officials visited Synagogue and sealed off potential Ebola healing miracles. A bishop in Abuja invented a new way of passing the sacrament while the usual post-sallat handshake is no longer the best seal of brotherhood. Nevertheless, I predict a boost in the sale of Ebola-erasing anointing oil, holy water, mantle and amulets. Most people bought into the hot salt water immunity.

Lesson 6:
The sixth lesson is a prediction - except Ebola yields to a vaccine, marriage vows are bound to change. Before you sign the dotted lines, make sure the priest has inserted the words - till Ebola do us part. The jury is out on this one. While one religion believes there is no marriage in heaven another promises delectable bounties for martyrs. Since nobody wants to die, it is better to live than rush off and be disappointed.

Lesson 7:
Only George Orwell could have foreseen lesson seven. In Animal Farm; beasts dreamt of their freedom from human tyranny. It may not be far off. Those with long throats for bush meat are reconsidering their passion. Last week, a congress were seen dancing kpalongo on the trees with a poster reading - Touch me if you dare! The African quest to decimate everything from baboons to bats; snakes to salamanders are fast being replaced with the love of salt and water solutions. This must be welcome news for conservationists who have been fighting hard to save species native to Africa without success. With time, grasscutters may yet flourish as our neighbours with the domestic closeness of the famous agama lizard.

Lesson 8:
The eighth lesson is a sad one. I understand parents of student doctors, nurses and allied courses want their children to change course. This has nothing to do with President Jones' order to sack striking doctors. No. They feel they have invested so much in their wards to risk losing them to a disease which kills within a 21 days. See why those striking doctors have refused to return to work?

khattab008: It's quite unfortunate, but i thought BEA scholars are jointly sponsored by Nigeria and the host country, is it possible that those countries are also not fulfilling their part of the deal??

But no matter what, the Nigerian government ought to stand up for her citizens.
FT pls, Mods.
The other country takes care of accommodation and school fees while Nigerian govt takes care of their upkeep and stipends. They would have been expelled from school by now if Nigerian govt. would have been responsible for their school fees.

The fun was at d market when those market women would want a foreigner to buy from them. Once u can speak the language u don't have any problem, u'll be accepted as one of them.
