TravelRe: General German Student Visa Enquiries Part 5 by Pegzzyg(f): 12:20pm On Oct 15, 2018
Good day all,
So, I resolved to certify my Docs at the Notary public tomorrow and submit my Application latest by Weds as Admission deadline in my proposed sch is Nov 15th. Just wanna inquire if there's anybody here that did same & applied to South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (Soest Campus) I also want to inquire if I am to certify my reference letter & motivation letter too or its only credentials? Sorry if my question seam vague but just wants to be clear. Thank You
KamsyIvy:
Please it’s better to certify at the embassy. No stories. Some schools do not accept any other way. Before you certify at the high court or Notary public just ask here if anyone already did it with the school.

Thanks for this, i'll consider that. Lansky came through. Thanks again.

If you get a response from @lansky will also suggest you ask for help with reviewing your written essays. I would have loved to help but IELTs humbled me, thankfully hubby passed and was PA.

Rooting for you and will be looking out for your testimony.

Sharing my story cuz of how I've learnt from others in this thread. Mine will take a peculiar route and I'll update the house.
However, for now I'll share how I studied for IELTS with the hope that it might help someone too.

Listening: Practice a lot. Get a hold of the Cambridge Books 1-12 and even 13 and do many practice tests. Practice concentrating cause my mind wandered sometimes, usually in between sections or at the beginning.

After a lot of practice, find out which of the listening question formats gives you a hard time then focus on that one to get better. Mine was the section with a question and multiple choice long answers. I jonsed a lot answering these type of questions during practice.

In the hall, don't touch the headset during the test or bend too low. Doing so will either interfere with or block the Infra-Red signal and you'll hear a scrambled sound instead of the test. I wrote all my answers in ALL CAPS; I couldn't risk small caps as my handwriting is terrible.

Reading: Get a hold of the Cambridge Books 1-12 and even 13 and do many practice tests. Although it's the GENERAL we are writing, I practiced a LOT with the ACADEMIC as it's harder/complex. When I did practice GENERAL, it was a breeze. Also, time yourself as you proceed.

After a lot of practice, figure out which type of questions you suck at and focus. Mine was T/F/NG or Y/N/NG - I failed them hard cry - especially when synonyms were used in the questions.

Finally, I read the entire passages during practice for both Academic and General. However, before my test I tried the skimming and scanning technique, and it worked too shocked

In the hall I answered in my question paper first then transferred to answer sheet later cuz of my bad handwriting. I finished Reading in 30mins then I revised my answers or the ones I skipped and transferred my answers in the last 30mins. I answered in ALL CAPS too.

Writing: Honestly, this was definitely the hardest for me - I am not a fan of long story.

Firstly, I finished an official free (for 1 month) IELTS LRWS online course *** even though I can't remember how I learnt about it. I also did the RoadtoIELTS that comes after you pay. Thirdly, I did a short video course *** downloadable via torrent - it taught me how to plan the different types of essays. Popular free IELTS websites also helped me too. Like L & R, it goes without saying that you should practice a lot.

Now when it comes to practicing, I think the best approach is to first UNDERSTAND the Writing marking criteria for both Task 1 and 2. The criteria for both is similar but only differs in Task Achievement vs Task Response respectively. When you understand the criteria you can give them what they want abi are looking for. (Same goes for Speaking).

Second step is to practice (TIMED) a lot with the criteria in mind. For writing (and speaking) it's hard to know your standing since you can't get immediate answers like L & R. What I did was to pay someone online ***, who claimed to be an official IELTS tutor, to mark some of my practice tests (Did same for speaking). Doesn't cost much. So say you have 3 weeks to your IELTS exam, you can write 4-5 letters and essays a week and get the last one in every week assessed. Practice with pencils or biros - basically whatever you prefer to write with during exam.
If you can't write an essay everyday, at least practice planning an essay everyday (i.e, Intro, Paragraph 1, Paragraph2, etc , Conclusion).

In the hall, every minute counts in Writing. If you are going to ease yourself during the test, it's best you do it during Reading cuz it's probably the test you'll finish on time. They won't let you out of the hall during the chill period between L & R, or R & W. I lost about 2 mins in Writing while running to and fro the bathroom grin . As globally advised, spend 20 mins on Task 1, and 40 mins on Task 2 (you know Task 2 carries twice the weight). For each Task, quickly plan before you start writing.

The moment I started writing, I wrote down the different ways to show 'Grammatical Range and Accuracy' so that I remembered to include them (i.e. Simple/Compound/Complex Sentences, Modals, Tenses, Adverbials, etc).
In Task 1, one mistake I recall was mixing up indentation with skipping a line between paragraphs. I corrected the mistake in Task 2.
I didn't do well in Task 2 as I wrote well below 250 words: 220 ish words if I recall correctly. Also, my handwriting is pretty bad (like Doctor type) so I had to slow down to be legible which also added to the pressure. I also recall my conclusion paragraph was poor as I was tense, rushing and looking at the clock.

Speaking: I semi-covered speaking in the Writing section. To reiterate, UNDERSTAND the Speaking marking criteria and give them what they want. Cambridge Books 1-12/13 has Speaking tests too.

You already know about giving extended but on-point/topic (don't digress) answers in Part 1, speaking beyond the stipulated 2 minutes in Part 2, using Part 3 to further give them what they want and finally that lying is okay wink .

The free (for 1 month) online course *** helped. YouTube videos, free IELTS websites, RoadtoIELTS. I also paid someone, who claimed to be a former IELTS examiner, to interview/assess me; He gave me pointers/feedback and the session eased my tension - don't even understand why I was tensed about a Language I've spoken all my life undecided .

To conclude, practice for L & R, understand criteria and practice for W & S, know your weak areas and improve them.

While I understand that we all want to get this PR sorted, please consider your schedule and book a date that will give you time to study/practice wella. Like if you work full-time, part-time, run a biz, married, single, run a family etc schedule your test accordingly. In hindsight, I nearly made the mistake of registering in another City for the test cuz my own City had no space for a closer date - I would have performed poorly.

*** I'm not sure about the rules as per what is considered advertising so I'm not mentioning any links. However let me know and I'll email them to you. For the Cambridge Books I think they are available via torrent even though I copied via USB from someone in my City.

...and I said I'm not a fan of long story.
Cheers grin

Everything is bad! Infact, terrible......... Please, indulge me. Let me not post! I'll check out your recommendation (lansky). Thanks a million, I really appreciate. I really don't have courage, would post it when I give my testimony cause I am confident by His grace that I will next year. Thanks again.
CanadianNaija:
You are welcome. Please check out lansky suggestion for preparing for the test.

I don't know why your story moved me into commenting, but i will tell you this.

If you have the courage to post your test result, maybe you may get pointers on how to improve on the parts you're weakest.

English language comes a bit more easy to some people, that you didn't get your desired score doesn't mean you are not smart, you just have to practice better for the next one that's all.

Take care.

Thanks, I appreciate your honest feedback, I am open to suggestions or even critics for a positive result in my next sitting...... Perhaps, grammars like the ones you pointed out 'nailed me'. Thanks again honesty!
CanadianNaija:
Hi, sorry about your result, just try again when you are better prepared.

I feel like i should point out some things to you, and i hope you do not see what i am about to do as an affront.

You need to watch your grammar and try as much as you can not to write in shorthand, from the few posts you made that i have seen, there are some errors. Eg. Please see comments above.

I mean no harm, just helping.

Long post alert Very Silent reader
Had been planning to write here but very busy.
So just a few pointers as someone might need them.
PRE ITA TO COPR STAGE
Wrote IELTS and evaluated my M.Sc certificate + IELTS only from spouse
PCC Nigeria + Uk
Scanned each document and saved in individual folder for me,spouse and child
Funds in Savings account UK,just stamped statement of account + Oanda exchange + table for the conversion etc as funds were in GBP.
Reference letter was from Nigeria and not very detailed so attached other proof as experience was over 3 years ago.
Submitted nearly 1 week to deadline as was so busy with work etc( infact took annual leave)
Medicals wasn’t too straightforward, more test done and more cost plus logistics .
Got to Ip2 before medicals were passed, ordered GCMS note saw a few concerns particularly work experience- worthy to note is that my education and work experience were so parallel.
Immediately got more proof backing work experience and more LOE sent via CSE called CIC letter confirmed twas received.
Summary at the end interview recommended and attended- explained job duties in simple and practical terms to the VO etc was a wonderful time, good chat and advice on living as a PR as eligibility became passed.
Fees paid/PPR, had an issue with photo passports submitted , photos requested again, all sent. COPR received
Advice- pls write detailed LOE when something is not straight.
Follow up with CIC and panel physicians when necessary.
Pray to God and do lots of research especially if you have a unique situation.
APPLIED FROM UK, VISA OFFICE- LONDON, NATIONALITY- NIGERIAN.
For anyone waiting, may God bring your PPR,COPR,IELTS to you soonest in Jesus Name.
I really hope this answers someone’s question. Thanks to all those contributing and helping others.

Thanks for a swift response. Sch said German Embassy or Notary Public bt also 2 Apply via Uni-assist. Can I submit all the Docs myself 2 Uni-assist or I have 2 request 4 my sch 2 send my transcript 2 Uni-assist? I need your feedback on this Please, thanks
ajeleseujn:
Not necessarily at the embassy. Besides it takes longer days to get your documents certified at the embassy. All you need to do is to follow what the school ask for.
Of asked to certify, do that at a federal high court around you, and if you are being asked to notarized your documents, do that at a notary public.
You have to read carefully on the documents the school will ask you to certify but the common documents are
1. Your degree certificate
2. O levels
3. Transcript.
4. Letter of English proficiency (if asked)
5. Professional qualifications (if any)
Just check what the school needs.

All the best.

Meet around 10 people on the queue all seatd abt 4 visa interview 2 reunion.he walked out a guy that came without his passport (like common dude your coming to an embassy)he called me after some time and asked fr appointment letter and and passpprt. i passed to him not knowing my uni admission application form was in it(pls if u dont have this one dont bother coming. he will walk you out like he did the pretty girl on black). When he now requested for it, i gently told him he was holding it already cos i knew his temprament..bros that one no stop am, e change am for me! did i ask for this one the first time? I just lock up! He scrutinished me then passed me in. he wants strict compliance to his rules.Even the married woman fr reunion was not spared
Sorry about your experience, it is well... Just saw your post now after asking a question, kindly assist me with details of how 2 book an appointment for certification of Docs & which Docs 2 go wit? Masters is d intended programme. Thank you....

Hello all, Please I read page 1 of this Part 5 that I could Certify my Docs @ the High Court or German Embassy but a Family member insists that since I am based in Lagos then automatically it has to be certified @ the German Embassy! Please, I want to verify how true this information is? If its true, how much does this exercise cost? & is it all my Docs including motivation letter that I need to certify? & how do I go about booking for an Interview date for result certification/attestation @ the German Embassy before Application for a school? Master's is the intended programme while deadline for submission is 15th of next month for summer 2019 of the choice school. Prompt feedback would be very appreciated! Thanks...
