Vote4Obi: You're getting it all wrong. What do you think is the major reason for forex scarcity in Nigeria? Simple, due to lack of exports!
I don't think Peter Obi will implement the removal of import restrictions as his first policy on assuming office. From what he stated last time about oil producing areas, he obviously has plans to stop oil theft and ensure Nigeria maximizes its full oil production and exports. Once our oil exports return to normal like anything close to 2mbpd, pressure on dollar will reduce since we will be able to shore up our reserves. Importation of refined petroleum takes a huge portion of our forex, hopefully Dangote refinery will come on stream soon.
Are you aware that when ships bring imports, they would also want to take exports to avoid running at a loss? So, when more ships are coming to Nigeria, it would make our exports cheaper too.
Again, how is mere rhetoric on import restrictions by government helped? Has it stopped those goods from entering Nigeria? No! Have it stopped importers from seeking forex from the black market to import them? No! That policy is only helping the economy of Togo and Benin republic! It's only helping corrupt customs personnel to enrich themselves at the expense of Nigerians. And what exactly will the Ships return with, when everybody in Nigeria would be busy importing instead of producing? |

tctrills: If private companies cannot run the steel project, then it would be foolish to believe that government would do better. If I were OBJ, I would see for only N1 with the agreement that the plant should be running after a set time. If the private world can't make it work then it should be completely abandoned. I repeat, Government has no business in steel production. OK o. I hear you. |
Politics › Re: Peter Obi: We Will Remove Import & FOREX Restrictions by Perfectbeing(m): 11:10am On Oct 08, 2022 |
tctrills: No, we should not. It should be put in private hands. Government has no business producing steel. There are many major steel companies that could make the project profitable. Building it with government money in the first place was a mistake. If I was in charge, I would sell the project for N1 to a reputable company with an agreement that they would turn the place around after a set period of time. I would also give them a tax break to make them competitive with imported steel. The would need to pay workers and make profit. Nobody would invest in a business to not make profit. Tax break will not compensate their profit if they don't sell high enough.. BTW, Obj sold the steel company to an India Steel Corpration and when that flop of a President, Yar Adua, took over, he reversed the sale. His reversal breeched their agreement and Nigeria was to pay over $5 billion which was reduced recently to over $400 million. |

tctrills: There you are wrong again. There are many industries in both Nigeria and Ghana that currently make use of steel. The construction industry is one. If Nigerian made steel is very expensive, it would diminish our construction industry and make many people jobless. There are many industries in Nigeria that depend on cheap steel such as the fabrication industry, the auto and auto parts industry, the kitchen and home utensils industry. If the cost of your steel goes up, you would be putting many of these people out of work and reducing their profit margins. Do you get it now? Before I continue further, lemme ask you a question. Should Nigeria completely abandon the Ajaokuta Steel company after spending billions of dollars in it's construction, since producing steel from there would be more expensive than importation? |

babzo: Your initial example was of a mass murderer and I replied you saying there is not one mass killing in the USA where the culprit is not dead or arrested within 24 hours.
Now you bring examples of a non violent bank robber and missing people. Ok, I assume when I answer this, you will bring up scammers, rapists and burglars. Ok
There are levels of crime in America and levels of focus. There are also 4 levels of Police: Federal, State, County and City.
Again like I said in my earlier reply, there is no country without crime. America may even have more crime than Nigeria. The difference Is that in America there are people working 24 hours a day to solve these crimes. Their promotion and salaries is based on how many crimes they solve; not by who they know or State of origin.
The Nigerian robber was a non violent bank robber. Most likely one detective would have been assigned to the case, when they discovered that it was the same person robbing, a task force would have been set up. If he had shot anyone or killed, he wouldn't have gone free for that long.
Again kidnapping for ransom is a low IQ crime that has been eradicated in most countries. When you kidnap someone for money, it's different from kidnapping your child in a custody dispute or to rape the victim or to kill them.
In a decent orderly country, you can no longer successfully kidnap anyone for ransom ( money). If the phone calls are not traced, the money payment will be traced. And in Nigeria, it's not just one person kidnapped, it's thousands and the kidnappers are not caught.
Nigeria can't progress if we continue to make excuses for the incompetent leaders. Ok |

You actually make zero sense. Currently Nigeria and Ghana imports steel but there's few employment in the manufacturing sector of both countries. babzo: But within 24 hours that killer will be dead or arrested. And if arrested, will be jailed or sentenced to death within a year.
As long as there is a devil, there will be evil in every country.
What civilized countries do is is combat crime and punish evil doers.
When last did you hear of kidnap for Ransome in America? It's been over 40 years! You know why?.Kidnapping for ransom is such a stupid crime and so easy to solve; it has been eradicated.
It's so easy, even a year 1 recruit can solve a kidnapping case. How do you kidnap people for money and get away with it? They make phone calls, house the victims, buy food for them, then collect naira printed by the YEARS! Are they ghosts? How come was a Nigerian American able to rob America 68 times before he was caught? Check the number of unsolved cases of missing people (which included kidnappings) in America. This is a country with CCTV everywhere and a security budget of more than the other top 5 countries combined. |

Nigerians consume more rice than ever before. Talk about unaffordable.
Millions of farmers became millionaires. Go and verify.
Fuel subsidy will be completely removed and heaven and earth will not meet.
Yes, steel will be more cost in Nigeria than Ghana, but Nigeria will have more people employed in her steel industry than Ghana. In Ghana, only the people importing and selling steal will be making money. Most of the citizen would be unemployed.
Do you know that America's oil refinery refines oil more expensive that other places? This is because America's refinery were built before better efficient and cheaper way of refining oil was invented. Today, is America not still refining oil for other countries?
Ghana might enjoy cheaper steel than Nigeria but in the long run, it wouldn't help them. Same way Nigeria's fuel is the cheapest in West Africa but it's not helping us in anyway. Nigerians might be buying steel more expensive than Ghana, but many Nigerians would be employed and they'd have money to buy steel products like cars unlike Ghana where things will be cheap, but they still won't have the money to buy it. |

There was very little industry. 95% of the industries in china are under 30 years old. Please can you mention the products china was manufacturing 30 years ago? China had less industry than Taiwan and Korea before they opened up their economy. All the good things happened when they opened their economy. Eriokanmi: Import restrictions, now you're talking. Obi emphasized this and a good reason his economic policy will fly, especially with the single forex window. Single forex will not make any difference. The only difference that will happen is that instead of both the official and market price to be dying together, only the single (official) price would be dying. And it would even be faster than it is now. Nigeria introduced two (official and black market) dollar price in the 80s. And before then Naira was still falling. |
