It’s one thing to get a job offer, but another to decide if the job is right for you. You wouldn’t be the first person to accept a job without thinking only to realize, once the honeymoon was over, that you had made a terrible mistake. Wouldn’t it be great if you could ask questions that would raise red flags about a potential bad fit, perhaps averting a catastrophe? Asking the right questions now can increase the chances that your next strategic career move will be smart professionally and a fulfilling experience personally. You will want to evaluate: •How the skills developed on this job will impact your next job search. •How the size and culture of this company will impact your goals. •How your manager’s performance expectations and evaluations will be communicated. •The professional development path for this job and how others moved along it. •Who succeeds, who fails…and why. •How the company and this manager are known to treat employees. What’s in it for you over the long haul? The first and most important consideration is how will accepting this job affect your ability to get the next job? The odds are that this won’t be your last job change, so it’s important to determine if you are going to learn anything new that adds to your marketability next time you look for a job. Constant technological advances means that the skills you need to stay marketable—no matter what you do for a living—need to be in a state of on-going development. If the opportunity you are considering does not afford you the ability to develop new, in-demand skills every year, it could be a dead-end job that will become increasingly difficult to leave as your skills become less and less marketable to other employers. Is bigger always better? Consider the impact of company size. There are advantages and disadvantages to both big and small companies. With bigger companies, the benefits can be better, and you may get the opportunity to specialize, sometimes developing deep expertise in one specific area. Of course, deep expertise in one specific area will only help your career if those skills are in demand and likely to stay that way. There’s greater likelihood of on-going professional education, which accelerates your skill development, and the very size of the company provides opportunity for growth. On the downside, there is more likelihood that you’ll be spending the majority of your time working with peers, so that the tools of your growth will stem largely from training unless you make it a priority to build mentor relationships with more experienced colleagues. With smaller companies, everyone tends to wear more than one hat, so you’re more likely to develop a wider range of skills than deep expertise in one specific area. You’ll find greater opportunity for working with more experienced people on a daily basis, but you’ll still need to seek out and nurture those relationships. On the downside, it’s quite possible that benefits will be less comprehensive, and there will very likely be less formal training available. However, you can probably still get the training you need by asking for it. And while you do have the opportunity to stand out and become more rapidly credible and visible, you won’t have the same opportunity for steady upward progress. Ask questions Once a job offer is on the table, you will need to ask the questions that can help you evaluate the above issues. When these have been addressed, there are also questions about responsibilities and performance that you’ll want answered before making a decision. •What are the projects/responsibilities that will take up the majority of your time every day? How does management prefer these responsibilities/projects to be executed? How will success/failure be judged? What feedback/direction/coaching can you expect to insure that your efforts are on track? •How is your performance judged on a daily and weekly basis? How can you get feedback? How will it be delivered? •What would this manager like you to have achieved at end of thirty days? Sixty days? Ninety days? You’ll also want to ask about professional growth and potential career paths for someone joining the company at this level, and how others have moved along such paths. Be a discreet skeptic It's critical to uncover how the company and your new manager treats employees. You can do this by finding connections on LinkedIn who work or have worked at this company. Talk to them about the job, department and the manager. A few questions and some intelligent research today can save you from the living hell of having made a bad choice. http://www.pennenergy.com/articles/pennenergy/2013/02/how-to-decide-which-company-is-right-for-you.html?cmpid=EnlJobsFebruary282013 |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected former Minister of Works, Chief Tony Anenih, to chair its Board of Trustees (BoT), a position which he occupied between 2005 and 2007. Chief Anenih, 73, was elected after a meeting of the board, which began at about 8.45pm, on Monday and ended at about 12.45am on Tuesday. His emergence was by consensus following a long-drawn meeting of all the members of the board presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan in the Presidential Villa. Briefing the state house correspondents after his election, Chief Anenih said that he had been chairman of the BoT for two years before and has all it takes to move the party to greater heights. He added that he is not in doubt of his ability to make meaningful contribution to the growth of the party. “I was elected today by consensus as the chairman of the BoT. I know I can make meaningful contributions to the progress of the party. As you know, the BOT is the conscience of the party. It’s a body of men and women who have seen it all and I am happy to be the chairman of that board.” According to the PDP, the BoT had approved Professor Jerry Gana’s report on the streamlining of the membership of the board as well as carrying out necessary amendments based on the provisions of the BoT laws. The amendments were in the areas of tenure of office for BoT members, and selection by consensus of the new chairman. The election to head the party’s BoT is coming few months after President Jonathan appointed the former Minister of Works as the Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/02/26/tony-anenih-elected-chairman-of-pdps-bot/ |

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Prof Bolaji Akinyemi, on Saturday dropped a bombshell in Akure, the Ondo State capital, saying no Nigeria billionaire could be said to have acquired his wealth without getting involved in illegal deals. Mr. Akinyemi stated this while responding to questions after he delivered a lecture as part of activities marking the inauguration ceremony of Governor Olusegun Mimiko for a second and final term of office. "There is no billionaire in Nigeria who made money without evading taxes, inflating contract prices or getting involved in one illegal deal or another," the former minister said. "It is sad that most businessmen are not sincere, they get their wealth through illegal means, there is no one that can be a billionaire without being corrupt in Nigeria." Speaking on the topic"Leadership, Democracy and Development: A Paradigm Relationship", the former minister said for somebody to become a billionaire in Nigeria, he or she must have indulged, one way or the other, in corrupt practices. Mr. Akinyemi listed the corrupt practices to include: tax evasion, using government money for personal business and going through illegal means to win contracts from government. The former minister wondered whether Nigeria is currently operating a democratic system of government saying, "We still need to ask whether on the national scale, we claim to be operating a democratic system in Nigeria. Or is it a civilian system. I will concede without much conviction that we are operating a version of democracy especially in contradiction to the years of military rule." He continued, "Irrespective of the cynical game between the military and the civilian political elite in the governance of Nigeria, the biggest threat to our putative democracy is not from the military, but from the state of our un-development. "The real tragedy is that we have bred several generations who have lost hope in today and tomorrow. They have given up on Nigeria because Nigeria has given up on them. On the way forward, the former minister advised that oppression and marginalization must be discarded by all. On the way forward, the former minister advised Nigerian leaders to discard oppression and marginalization and work for the benefit of the generality of the citizenry. He said, "The political elite must make a conscious effort to arrive at a consensus that will be the outcome of negotiation, give and take, compromises among others. The system to be put in place should not reflect temporary advantages secured through a temporary monopoly of power. "We must find a way to building a nation where no man or woman is oppressed, where no man or woman is maginalised where there is hope for everyone, where a man or a woman through hard work, honesty and integrity will have the opportunity to achieve his dreams. When dream are killed and vision dulled, the nation is finished, "the Guest lecturer submitted. Present at the event are a former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Christopher Kolade, who chaired the occasion, former Oyo State Governor, Bayo Alao Akala, first Governor of Old Ondo State, Retired Brigadier David Ikpeme, first Civilian Governor of Ondo State, Bamidele Olumilua, Retired Major General Alani Akinriade, Afenifere Leader, Ayo Opadokun, Kunle Olajide, and a former Minister of Information, Alex Akinyele http://allafrica.com/stories/201302240321.html |
Pope Benedict XVI, delivering his last Sunday blessing from his window at the Vatican, said yesterday that God had asked him to retire. The 85-year-old pontiff, speaking in a strong voice, explained his controversial decision to abdicate to a crowd of an estimated 100,000 faithful in Rome, who chanted “Long Live the Pope!” “The Lord is calling me to climb onto the mountain, to dedicate myself even more to prayer and meditation. But this does not mean abandoning the church, Benedict said. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/faith/article3697781.ece?CMP=OTH-gnws-standard-2013_02_24 |

The Federal Government has completed the procurement process for the construction of a second Niger Bridge with Julius Berger-Africa Infrastructure Management (AIM) Consortium emerging the preferred bidder. Briefing newsmen on Friday in Abuja, the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, said the government had earmarked N30 billion under Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment (SURE-P) programme for the project. Onolememen said that Julius Berger-AIM Consortium emerged winner after slugging it out with other world-class construction companies which included ARM Consortium, Bouygues Consortium, China Harbour Consortium and Johnson-Matiere Consortium. According to him, the project, packaged under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement for a period of 25 years, will be delivered under design, finance, built, operate and transfer model. Onolememen said that the ministry had obtained a ``no objection’’ from the Infrastructure Concessioning Regulatory Commission (ICRC), which regulates all transaction under PPP. ``Having obtained the no objection, the ministry launched into the second phase of the project,’’ the minister said. He said that the second phase included detailed Hydrological and Topological Survey, Geotechnical Survey, detailed Environmental Impact Assessment and in-depth Traffic Survey of the project. He said that building a second Niger bridge was one of the election promises of President Goodluck Jonathan to the people of Nigeria. The bad state of the first Niger Bridge had elicited calls, particularly from the people of the South-Eastern part the country for the construction of a second bridge. The Federal High Court in Lagos has awarded N10 million in favour of Capital Oil & Gas and its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah. The sum was awarded as damages against the Inspector General Of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, the Commissioner of Police of the Special Fraud Unit, Tunde Ogunsakin, the Chairman of Access Bank, Mr Aig-Imokhuede, and the CEO of Coscharis Motors, Cosmas Maduka jointly for breach of the fundamental human rights of Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah. In his judgment, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke quashed and set aside the Presidential Report on Fuel Subsidy by Aig-Imokhuede and the Police Interim Report that indicted Ifeanyi Ubah on fuel subsidy. In quashing the report, the court held that it was not obtained under a favourable condition as there was conflict of interest arising from the report of Aig-Imokhuede. The court also faulted the police report compiled by Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin who is also a member of the presidential task force which indicted him on the fuel subsidy. The court held that they were both investigators and prosecutors at the same time and also restrained the police from re-arresting or investigating the capital oil boss. It will be recalled that Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah had filed a suit challenging the Presidential Report on Fuel Subsidy and his detention in custody for 10 days. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/02/18/fuel-subsidy-scam-court-orders-ig-others-to-pay-ubah-n10m/ |

What will happen tonight? Just before 7.30pm today, a 150ft wide chunk of space rock will whizz past us in the closest shave since records began. If it hit the planet, it could wipe out a city the size of London and do as much damage as 1,000 of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima. Nasa has stressed that ‘no Earth impact is possible’ – but scientists say there is a small chance that TV signals may be affected. The asteroid will cut through the orbit of some satellites used for weather forecasting and for satellite phones and television. Mobile phones won’t be affected as they rely on land-based masts and cables. Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered last year by a Spanish dentist turned amateur astronomer and has been closely tracked ever since. Hurtling through space at speeds of five miles a second, eight times as fast as a speeding bullet, it will come within 17,000 miles of Earth at 7.24pm tomorrow. Astronomy expert Daniel Brown, of Nottingham Trent University, said: ‘In astronomical terms, that’s very close.’ Although the asteroid won’t be visible with the naked eye, it should be possible to see it with binoculars Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2279020/It-like-scene-Armageddon-movie-More-500-people-injured-buildings-smashed-Russian-mobile-network-wiped-meteorite-shower-causes-widespread-panic.html#ixzz2KxfSVg00 |

A terrifying meteorite shower hit Russia early this morning injuring more than 400 people, many of them hurt by broken glass. The Urals region was struck by falling meteorite fragments which fell in the city of Chelyabinsk, 900 miles east of Moscow and close to the Kazakhstan border. Brightly burning rocks could be seen for hundreds of kilometres as they crashed at around 9.20am local time (03.20 UK time). for more details check the link below: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2279020/It-like-scene-Armageddon-movie-More-400-people-injured-buildings-smashed-Russian-mobile-network-wiped-meteorite-shower-causes-widespread-panic.html |

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson on Wednesday affirmed his position on the prescription of death sentence for kidnappers by signing into law the Bayelsa State kidnapping and Allied offences bill 2013. Assenting to the bill passed by the legislative arm of government, the governor said that he would not hesitate to sign the death warrant of any person or group of persons caught in the act of kidnapping and other related offences. Mr Dickson said, “I like to say this, if you are involved in any act of kidnapping, let me warn you today, don’t come near Bayelsa. We have put measures in place. I have just a short while ago commissioned 15 fast moving patrol boats for use by our security forces to ensure maritime security and safety. “If you try that, whether it is in sea-piracy or kidnapping, we are going to get you. We will make it difficult for you to succeed and whoever you are and wherever you are operating from, we are going to get you. “I am aware that the security forces have made several arrests and most of the young men and women who were involved in the recent kidnappings that took place are presently under custody. Any of them found guilty of the offence will be dealt with in accordance with the law. “Today with this bill having been signed into law, we have entered a new phase in terms of the provision of the legal infrastructure that will support our fight against kidnapping and related offences. “It is morally indefensible for young people for whatever reason to go under the cover of darkness, armed with illegal weapons, terrorize villages and old people in their homes and then forcefully abduct and rough handle old people and take them as an article of trade. That is morally indefensible. “It cannot be justified under any circumstance at all. As a government, we are by this law sending out a strong message of condemnation and that we are prepared and determined to work with our able security agencies as a team together to flush out such criminals from within Bayelsa or wherever they are operating from. “As I said earlier, and most people know that when I say something, I do it. I will not hesitate to sign a certificate,(warrant) of execution. “Anybody who doesn’t listen and commits any of the offences prohibited by this law, and who is tried and convicted will face the penalty.” http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/02/13/dickson-approves-death-penalty-for-kidnappers-in-bayelsa/ |
