Restoring Trust: Commending Integrity Amidst Police Misconduct in Edo State by Prof. Adesoji Adesugba The Nigeria Police Force remains a critical pillar in the structure of national security. Across the country, thousands of officers risk their lives daily in service to the nation. Yet, the actions of a few bad eggs continue to endanger this hard-earned trust, casting a dark shadow on the integrity of the entire institution. On Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, a disturbing incident unfolded involving members of the National Association of Seadogs - Pyrates Confraternity. Returning from their 49th National Converge held in Owerri, Imo State, they were intercepted near Benin City, Edo State, by six policemen under the pretense of a routine stop-and-search operation. Rather than conducting a lawful engagement, these officers engaged in brazen extortion, forcibly taking the sum of ₦2 million from a member and personal items, and official regalia from the rest of them. The culprits comprised: • Three Inspectors • One Constable • One unconfirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP – one star) • One confirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP – two stars) While the four junior officers have been immediately placed under orderly room trial, preceding their dismissal from the Police Force, the two ASPs—by virtue of their commissioned ranks—are being subjected to internal disciplinary procedures and will be formally issued queries pending further administrative action. What followed this unfortunate breach of public trust, however, was a powerful demonstration of leadership, accountability, and professionalism. The members of the Association, guided by discipline and respect for the rule of law, resisted the temptation to retaliate or escalate the situation. Instead, they reported the incident through the appropriate channels. In response, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika (fdc), acted swiftly and decisively. Within hours, he: • Ensured the full recovery and return of the stolen ₦2 million, • Returned all seized personal effects and official regalia, • Initiated disciplinary action against the offending officers, • And communicated openly with the leadership of the Association to ensure that justice would be served transparently. The NAS Cap’n, Dr. Joseph Oteri, has since expressed appreciation to CP Agbonika for his firm and principled handling of the matter. In his words, “Your actions have not only restored what was lost but have restored confidence in the fact that there are still leaders within the Nigeria Police Force committed to the ideals of justice, accountability, and service.” This incident, while regrettable, serves as a case study in ethical response—both on the part of the victimized citizens and the Police Command leadership. It proves that misconduct can be confronted and corrected when citizens act responsibly and public officers act with courage and integrity. As Nigerians, we must remain vigilant in holding institutions accountable, while also amplifying stories of courage and reform. CP Agbonika has shown that it is possible to lead without compromise and to uphold the honor of the uniform. The Nigeria Police Force must continue to weed out corrupt officers and support those committed to protecting the nation with honour and dignity. That is how trust will be rebuilt—one principled action at a time.

Stakeholders Renew Push for True Local Government Autonomy at NAS Feast of Barracuda 2025 Uyo, Nigeria — June 14, 2025 Calls for constitutional reforms and strengthened grassroots governance echoed in Uyo on Saturday as the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) hosted the 2025 edition of its annual civic forum, the *Feast of Barracuda*. Held at the EEJM Hotel Hall and organized by the Sancta Riviera Deck (Uyo chapter), this year’s event was themed *“Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria: A Panacea for Effective Development at the Grassroot: Prospects and Challenges.”* The gathering attracted lawmakers, academics, civil society leaders, and concerned citizens, all united in advocating for more independent and effective local governance across Nigeria. Delivering the keynote address, Hon. (Mrs.) Itoro Etim PhD, Member representing Uruan State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, emphasized the urgency of granting true administrative and financial independence to Nigeria’s 774 local government councils. Citing Sections 7 and 162(5) of the 1999 Constitution and a landmark Supreme Court ruling of July 11, 2024, she described local autonomy as the cornerstone of inclusive and accountable governance. “Autonomy empowers local councils to design community-specific budgets and execute grassroots-focused development projects without interference,” Dr. Etim said. “Without this, our communities will continue to face poor infrastructure, weak health systems, and failing education.” A panel discussion followed, moderated by legal practitioner Barr. Diamond Akpanika. The session featured robust perspectives from Hon. Nkereuwem James, a former councillor in Mkpat Enin LGA; Hon. Prince Ukpong Akpabio, member representing Essien Udim in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly; and Engr. Nsikan Affia FNSE, a former Dean, School of Engineering at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic. The panelists dissected the political, legal, and operational roadblocks to local government autonomy and proposed pragmatic strategies for reform. Chairman of the occasion, Barr. Uwem Ekanem, represented by Rt. Hon. Anthony Akan, underscored the critical role of structural change in achieving national development. “The current model of local administration remains a bottleneck,” he declared. “Autonomy must move from rhetoric to reality through concrete policy implementation.” Welcoming guests, Mr. Mfoniso Akpabio, Capoon of the Sancta Riviera Deck, gave a brief history of the National Association of Seadogs and its commitment to social advocacy. He clarified the organization’s status, stating, “NAS has not operated on any university campus since 1984. To join, one must be a graduate.” Among the dignitaries present were Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Area Mate, Area 6 of the association, who served as Special Guest of Honour, and Rt. Hon. (Chief) Effiong Johnson, Chief Whip of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. Both lent their voices in support of legislative action to entrench true local government independence. The Feast of Barracuda, a flagship civic enlightenment initiative of the National Association of Seadogs, continues to serve as a platform for policy discourse and public engagement. As the 2025 edition concluded, participants resolved to sustain dialogue with lawmakers and push for the full implementation of constitutional provisions that guarantee transparent, accountable, and effective local governance.

PRESS STATEMENT *THE UNFORTUNATE CRISIS AT THE MECHANIC VILLAGE IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE* The National Association of Seadogs - Pyrates Confraternity, Sancta Riviera Deck (Uyo Chapter) condemns in its entirety, the unfortunate clash at mechanic village in Uyo Local Government Area that led to the crisis of the 30th of September, 2022. The said premises is known to host a large population of peoples from across Nigeria who deal on various spare parts and repairs of all sorts of vehicles, alongside indeginous people. The clash as revealed by investigations originated from a misunderstanding between an indeginous person and a non-indigene as to the use of space. It is said that the misunderstanding degenerated to heated arguments and an unfortunate infliction of bodily injury on one party, a situation that escalated a serious crisis which led to more injuries and wanton destruction of properties of immense value. As an association committed to the fight against all forms of ethnicity and tribalism where it is deployed negatively, we are poised to respond to this ugly incident which tended towards ethnicity. It is quite unsettling that at a time when we are supposed to be promoting unity and taking advantage of our collective uniqueness as a people, some unscrupulous elements are still pushing the frontiers of war inspired by ethnic/tribal sentiments. While it may not be out of place for brothers to disagree, when such disagreements ferry along with it, biases upon tribe, colour or race, such repugnant tendencies must be immediately repudiated by all and not made a trend by bloggers/social media users. As an association known for the promotion of humanistic ideals, we appeal to all those concerned to sheath their swords and seek ways to reconcile all differences. We believe in the oneness of all humans and that devoid race and creed we all bleed red. We call on the management of the Mechanic Village to initiate the process of reopening the premises for full scale daily business while also evolving measures to mitigate the effects of the losses recorded by those directly affected. While commending the effort of the security operatives who were on hand to calm the situation, we wish to appeal to the State Government to render support to those who have been negatively hit by the unfortunate circumstance. We therefore call on all Nigerians to say no to all forms of ethnicity and tribalism, as it has for far too long proven moribund and counter-productive. Hon. Michael Ekpo Capoon. Sancta Riviera Deck (Uyo Chapter)

PRESS STATEMENT BY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SEADOGS, PYRATES CONFRATERNITY, SANCTA RIVIERA DECK (UYO CHAPTER) THE COLLAPSED BUILDING INCIDENT AT IMAN STREET IN UYO. On September 17th 2022, the news of a collapsed building at Iman Street in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State sent shock waves throughout the state. The structure, which was supposedly proposed to be a six-storey building, collapsed while still under construction, killing two people while several others sustained various degrees of injuries according to eyewitnesses. On the spot assessment at the collapse site indicated that this unfortunate incident was allegedly caused by patronage of quacks as the alleged use of substandard materials by those contracted for the job manifested glaringly in the debris. The National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Sancta Riviera Deck ( Uyo Chapter) express our deep condolences to those who lost their loved ones on that fateful day and call for justice to be served without delay. We decry the poor and uncoordinated mobilization/response of the Fire Service and other agencies to the scene and call for machinery to be put in place by all relevant stakeholders for the immediate establishment of an Emergency Management Commission at the state level. While we commend efforts of civil society groups, residents and other stakeholders who engaged in the rescue of victims, we condemn the prevalence in patronage of quacks in place of professionals for structural designs and construction projects by the people in Akwa- Ibom. We also warn that persons who do not possess the requisite qualifications in the field of construction should refrain forthwith from putting themselves forward for such responsibilities. We support the decision to set up the Akwa Ibom State Government Panel of Enquiry to probe the incident. We urge the panel to be thorough in their investigation of the cause(s) of this building collapse and ensure that those found culpable and those producing/importing substandard building materials are brought to book in accordance with the law. We implore the Akwa- Ibom State Government to put legislation in place to regulate and carry out progressive assessments of elevated structures in the state as well as come up with clear policies and measures to totally eradicate quackery in the field of building construction. On this note, we call on all civil society groups to join us in an intensive awareness campaign to sensitize the public on the dangers of engaging the services of quacks for their building services and vice versa. We also call on the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and other relevant professional bodies to make available to the public a Directory for easy access to their pool of professionals. We seize this opportunity to call on Nigerians especially residents of Akwa- Ibom State to join us in the advocacy to stop quackery in all its ramifications and save lives. Signed: Hon. Michael Ekpo Capoon, Sancta Riviera Deck (Uyo Chapter covering Akwa Ibom North West and North Central.)

Okay... Sad reality... Truth has no seconder. |
The National Association of Seadogs (a.k.a Pyrates Confraternity), Sancta Riviera Deck, has concluded her celebration of 2022 Feast of Barracuda (FOB) on 30th July, 2022. This year’s celebration tagged “The Making of an Ideal Nigerian Society: Proper Parenting as a Bedrock,” had in attendance members of seadogs and their respective families and non members. The event which was chaired by Chief Clement Isok, a retired Permanent Secretary in Akwa Ibom State. Also, in attendance was the guest speaker, Mrs. Mfon Mkpong Nze, the Principal, Nigerian Christian Institute, Uyo. Other discussants were Mrs. Helenubong Emmanuel Okon, a teacher in Adiahaobong Secondary Commercial School, Uyo; Barr. Bassey Etim of The Integrity Law Firm (TILF) while Mr. Ekere Usoro, SA to Executive Governor on Project Monitoring, Akwa Ibom State, served as the moderator of the day. In a welcome address presented by Rt. Hon Anthony Akan, the president of NAS, Uyo chapter, participants were enlightened that the Feast of Barracuda is an annual event that is celebrated across the flagship of the Pyrates Confraternity. The President maintained that the yearly event aims at affording both members and non members the opportunity to discuss on pressing national and social issues and also feast with families and non members. Speaking about the organization, Rt Hon Akan also told the participants that the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) is an international charitable and humanitarian organisation comprising like-minded, intellectually stimulated and disciplined men who are committed to fighting the ills of the society wherever such may rear its ugly head. He further identified some of these ills to include moral decadence, corruption, nepotism and embezzlement of public funds. According to him, the organisation which was birthed by seven young men in the then university college, Ibadan in 1952, has since expanded and now has sixty-six branches within and outside Nigeria. In addition, he stated clearly that the Pyrates Confraternity does not operate in the Universities having pulled out since 1984 and the requirement for membership is the NYSC certificate. Similarly, the chairman of the occasion, Chief Clement Isok, in his speech told the participants that the concept of the Feast of Barracuda is derived from the experience of Seafarers of old who encountered the Barracuda, a large predatory tropical marine fish and an opportunistic predator that preyed on other aquatic lives and sometimes humans. Oral traditions has it that has it that sailors and merchants of old saw this predator as a huge impediment to their smooth sail, travel and trades. Because the barracuda was considered an impediment to seafarers, they would feast on it at any point where they were able to conquer it. Relating the idea to NAS, the chairman said that the event puts forward topical issues that militates against the attainment of an egalitarian society for debates and possibly proffer solutions. Therefore, such gathering is celebrated as the Feast of Barracuda (FOB). Meanwhile, Mrs Nze, the guest speaker, expressed her excitement on the topic. According to her: “My excitement is twofold; first it’s exciting that a group of people actually feel that parenting is something that we need to spend time talking about. In the past, this has not been the case (which may explain the terrible state of parenting in today’s society!). So whenever any group takes out time to discuss parenting, with a view to helping parents parent better, I am elated. The second reason for my excitement is personal, I get to talk about one of my very favourite things- 'PARENTING'. The guest speaker established that parenting is more an art than a science because there is always that “unknown” element, the children themselves, that may “throw a wrench in the works.” She told the participants that effective parenting is a step by step process which starts with decision. Others are study, rules and penalties, time among others. Again, during the panel discussion, Barr. Bassey Effiong spoke on plethora of ideas bordering on parenting, by even exploring the legal framework of the topic. Another panelist, Mrs Helenubong Emmanuel, spoke on how relationship between parents could influence their offsprings. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the “Barracuda” as participants feasted on it with utmost excitement.

15th January, 2020: God Said No! On the early hours of Wednesday, 15th January, 2020, after my early morning session while working in the bank, I received a telephone call from my girlfriend PerkyFavour Jones Inyang , as she then was, "Baby, I saw you in my dream last night, you were in the hospital surrounded by people. You were dead. Let me pray for you", she insisted. I laughed so hard and made jest of it. I said "Woman of God Pray for your boy". She prayed over the phone. She was working in a radio station at Onitsha(Wazobia fm), then. Sincerely, the prayer made no sense to me. I even told her "Madam, this prayer too long". Few minutes later, I walked out of the bank's mantrap door with my small phone while she was still praying. I ended her call and boarded a motorcycle to join my colleagues who had left for marketing. Kpam!!! I had a fatal road crash. I was not alive at the scene. It was only the bike guy that was rushed to the hospital because he was still breathing. He kicked the bucket afterwards. My face was covered and left at the road side. A good samaritan saw me, uncovered my face, used my small phone and raised an alarm. My skull cracked into the brain. I was shattered. I was in coma. I went to 5 hospitals in 2 days. I went through brain Surgery. I passed through pains. I tested hell. I came out alive. The height of the event was how God raised men and women to rally round me with every resources within their disposal so I could live again. This could not have been possible if God was not on my side. Thanks to my then girlfriend, now wife. I love you forever! A zillion thanks to my family and my girlfriend's mother(Now mother in-law) Thanks to TEP church for their spiritual support. Thank you NAS. My first point of call. Thank you to all members of Union Bank, Abak branch and beyond for the love and support during that period. Thanks to the Medical personnels at Ibom Specialist Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Ubong Ekpene (NeuroSurgeon). Thanks to all my friends who came through for me(online/offline). Lastly, a zillion thanks to Angel Onofiok Luke whom God sent to rescue me through His infinite Grace and Mercy. He paid my bills. The surgery was about N2.3m. Angel Onofiok Luke has been immortalized in the deepest part of my heart. Whenever you see me and the scars on my head, just know that I am that person God showed mercy and gave another chance. To God be the Glory!

I do not find this funny, bro. Staying in an Isolation center is traumatizing enough. Why should I scam myself? What I mean by small cough is that, I can still breath properly. In fact, drop your number let me call you on video call. Unknown31: |
Also add that Vaccination does not stop one from contracting COVID. I did 2 complete jabs. I contracted the Virus. No complications. Just small cough. I am still at the Isolation center. I am fine now. Guys, please vaccinate. Liposure: |
Holadokun:Hello, I am currently at an Isolation center down south. In fact, the 3rd State on that list. I vaccinated complete 2 doses. I tested positive few days ago. Please use your facemask. It is real. I am down. But I will be fine. |
Tadeknkeepcalm:Bro, I wrote it intentionally. I always frown at the present pace of development in the state. I am not a party person. I could have died if there was no facility to accommodate me when Doctors are on strike. Last year January, I had an accident that led to brain surgery. Although expensive, it was done in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Ibom Multi-Specialty Hospital. I survived. The State Government deserves commendation where necessary. I am not a sycophant. I am a top critic of this Government. |
Dear Nairalanders, How are you doing? Maybe everyone is fine. Well, I am writing from an Isolation center down Southern part of Nigeria. I was struck by Covid-19 3 days ago. But how did it start? 4 weeks ago, I had normal malaria/typhoid symptoms, I quickly rushed to a pharmacy. I bought the malaria/typhoid drugs. I even branched the market place to buy plenty fruits too. Well, after taking all the drugs, I was fine. But after a week I ended the typhoid drugs, I developed serious fever. I lost sense of taste and smell. My temperature was very high. My wife had to soak piece of cloth in water to place on my body. Well, I never could think it was Covid because I had vaccinated. However, before I vaccinated, I read somewhere that it does not stop one from having COVID, but could only prevent complications. I took the full dose and did not believe such story. Fast forward. Even if my nose was placed inside a soak-away pit, I could not perceive anything. How would I just develop such and it continued for straight one week? Mehn, I had to go for COVID-TEST in a Federal Teaching Hospital. After 3 days, I could not move again. My wife and family members were praying for me around 8:30pm, a call came in. No one could pick up. My wife used my phone to message the person to send text that I am not strong to talk. Behold, the message of me being COVID-Positive came in. When I saw it, I became strong. My 6month old baby boy was by my side. I stood up. I asked everyone to move away. Packed some stuffs, moved to my car and zoomed off to another house for Isolation. I stopped by in a pharmacy to get some drugs. After 2 days of self-Isolation, I could not cope again. Doctors are on strike. No drugs. I made calls and calls because the cough was increasing and my breath was becoming weak. God made a way, I am now in the Isolation center. My wife tested negative. I am now fine. Thanks to the Government of Akwa Ibom State for providing this COVID-19 Isolation center for us. This place is unique. Oxygen is available. Professionals are very active and polite. We are even catching cruise from our corners... Tv set and nice sound system to wash off our psychological needs. Please Stay safe out there. Na "nothing dey happen" mentality rubbish me so o. Covid is real. I was an online booking driver. Exposed to all manner of people. Any unusual symptom, go for test. Do not assume. |

Great piece. I am a Food Scientist(B.sc in Food Science and Technology). The opportunity are much in Agriculture. Unfortunately, the support in food processing and storage is very low. We professionals dey find work for bank. |
Amazing Akwa Ibom! This was where I did my Brain Surgery after a ghastly motor accident in Akwa Ibom where the bike guy died. I hit my head on the coal tar and my skull cracked into the brain. I survived because of their topnotch medical facilities. One of the best in Africa. God bless our former Governor, Barr. Godswill Obot Akpabio. Maybe I would have kicked the bucket if I was taken to normal federal medical center. Their nurses behaves as if you are in overseas hospital. Nobody yells at a patient. My bed even had a remote control... What an experience. |
